2008-03-06 16:33:28
The day to day irritations that don’t ruin our lives but raise our blood pressure and our hackles and add to the quota of moans and grumbles circulating in daily conversation. Council tax. Road works Speed Cameras Petrol Prices (also gas and electric) British Telecom Vandalism Builders Waiting in for tradesmen or deliveries Late trains or buses Litter Nosy neighbours Noisy neighbours Charity tin rattlers Junk mail Telephone marketing Call [...]

Leap Year Birthday
2008-02-29 15:54:13
Leap year folk get one birthday every four years, which means that when they reach 100 they will only be 25. It means that although they celebrate their birthday on 28th February or 1st March for the three years, and whatever  fun and partying takes place, it never feels completely authentic. But when the 29th [...]

Swans
2008-02-28 13:57:21
There are a pair of swans on the pond in my village and every year they have a family of cygnets. The swans are so tame they lead their family up the road to local gardens or to graze bugs on the grass verges. Sometimes they sit in the middle of the road and traffic [...]

Animal Antics
2008-02-27 16:10:23
Part of the joy of pets is the fact that they play. In fact cats and dogs play but I don’t think hamsters do, unless you count their treadmill. I’ve never seen a rabbit do much more than munch or sleep but to be fair I have never kept one. As for [...]

Cute Dogs and Squeaky Toys
2008-02-26 15:50:20
Devoted to our dogs we buy them squeaky toys even though they drive us nuts with the noise. This post has loads of cute dogly activity. I did think of using a squeaky toy as a training tool for The Heek because he loves them so much. I’ve tried the metallic clicker and a [...]

10 Reasons for Fat Britain.
2008-02-23 19:41:14
24 hour drinking and the British booze culture. Alcohol is fattening! We are becoming more like the USA and using cars for the shortest journey. As roads become more congested, more and more are being built rather than alternatives sought. Schools have been asked to improve nutrition for children and parents are urged to change [...]

Bleed-You-Dry Britain
2008-02-21 15:19:57
Our society is purely surveillance with CCTV everywhere,  employers and advertisers tracking our website surfing habits, ,stores using reward cards to get information about our spending habits. Our mobile phone and credit card use is being watched and recorded by somebody and even our rubbish will be surveyed.  Most of this ensuring we ae [...]

It’s Spring in February
2008-02-20 04:03:18
It is 10am, the sun is shining and I’ve just taken the Heek for a walk wearing a tee-shirt because it is so mild, despite the cold and frosty night. I walked through the church yard and over a little wooden plank bridge to a meadow and round, back to the far side [...]

Red Telephone Boxes.
2008-02-19 15:06:13
There aren’t many of these around but whenever I spot them I can’t understand why BT decided to replace them with horrible grey and beige efforts. The red ones are mostly in quaint village locations and always look cheerful and homely. In the days when we didn’t have mobiles you can imagine how welcome a [...]

10 Funny Epitaphs
2008-02-18 16:06:45
Here lies Ann Mann, Who lived an old maid But died an old Mann. Dec. 8, 1767 Tom Smith is dead, and here he lies, Nobody laughs and nobody cries; Where his soul’s gone, or how it fares, Nobody knows, and nobody cares. Newbury, England [1742] Here lies [...]

Bentley Motor Museum
2008-03-16 18:05:34
Typically English mixture of stately home with grounds and woodland, wildfowl reserve, crafts workshops and a motor museum. I must admit it was a good day out despite the sinister black swan that looked as though it was going to take a chunk out of my leg at any moment. Cool huh?

15 British Stereotypes
2008-03-14 16:38:52
Beefeaters , guarding the palace and keeping a botox face Footballers from small local teams where family supporters huddle in the wind and the rain to cheer them on, pubs with wide screen tv’s and cock-eyed punters cheering and belching , huge stadiums where [...]

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRAGMENTED BRITAIN
2008-03-17 18:30:50
Households are recycling their socks off while factories, businesses and even some schools and colleges have not even started. Junk mail has not been banned. The paperless office is a joke. Everything is printed out and filed and businesses have huge stores of archived twaddle. Stores are finally being encouraged not to use plastic bags, yet food [...]

Mother’s Day UK Style
2008-03-01 16:16:16
Shops and stores (as usual) use every marketing ploy to play on our guilt strings to ensure we can’t walk past chocolates, flowers, perfume and treats without buying something, or for those with a stronger will, making a mental note of the date and a vow to get something decent - which we may forget [...]

Easter Bank Holiday Scramble
2008-03-20 14:31:10
Prepare ye for a perilous, wearisome journey with battling drivers, as everyone ‘gets away’ for a break and then ‘goes home’ a couple of days later, exhausted after planning, packing, travelling and cramming in days out - only to find you are mingling with hoards of others who had the same idea. Prepare ye also for [...]

Classic Comedy
2008-03-19 17:37:25
I’ve just been watching Fawlty Towers again after many years and it is fantastic. The humour, the timing, characterisation and character interraction is just perfect and the scenario builds, layer on layer, adding tension and hilarity until the climax. the clothes, cars and decor is dated but the comedy sparkles as fresh as [...]

Church Footing
2008-03-23 17:37:16
Easter Day and lovely old churches nationwide will have treble or more congregation than they get for the rest of the year apart from Christmas. Everyone will enjoy traditional Easter hymns and the story of Jesus rising from the tomb. Then they’ll go home to their huge roast and the meaning and the story will [...]

Grand Gestures
2008-03-25 19:22:19
Somebody buying a round for everybody in the bar is a great gesture, but make it champagne all round and it becomes a grand gesture. But if somebody buys a round for a large group of friends, when they have money problems which nobody knows about it is a grander gesture or maybe a [...]

No Food?
2008-03-24 13:22:41
I popped out to get something for lunch from a local Tesco Express as I had nothing in. Or so I thought. The reality is that I had vegetables, frozen veg, cheese, pasta, potatoes, various tins, butter, milk, eggs and all the basics such as oil etc. I had plenty, yet wasted petrol and [...]

Markets.
2008-03-27 15:52:23
Is it just me or are many UK markets a bit depressing? I’m not talking about large popular, specific or occasional ones like Camden (as was,) Riverside, Portobello, Aberystwyth, Totnes; or Farmers markets, but your local or regular Saturday market with random stalls full of plastic toys, uninspiring pictures, shiny clothes, pet food, plastic [...]

Cloning Supermarkets
2008-03-26 17:13:48
I had a very spooky experience when I happened to pop into Tescos in Bexhill a couple of days after popping into the Eastbourne version. Déjà vu  on every aisle and every display.  Wine sales, plates, signs were exactly duplicated, even to where they were placed.  I could have been in either store.  It may not [...]

No title
2008-03-28 18:55:37
I had a sudden craving for pie and mash today, as served in the best traditional pie and mash shops. It was probably because the weather was cold with blustery wind and rain. Unfortunately London is a bit far to go, despite the craving so I’ll have to wait until my next trip. Pie and [...]

April Snow Showers
2008-04-06 12:16:38
It’s snowing hard outside. A bit unseasonal but snow is always magical especially now it is falling down on the blossom trees and primroses. We have it so rarely that everyone feels a tad excited about it, without wanting to admit it. We quite like disrupted trafffic, being unable to get into work and [...]

How to Annoy a Brit
2008-04-09 16:30:34
Forget to say please or thank you every time you are given anything (even a bill!) Refuse to talk about the weather. Mildly disagree with them. Jump a queue. Keep saying ‘after you’  rather than going through the door that’s been opened. Offer postive ideas and solutions to everything they moan about. Ban the colours beige and magnolia. Weep loudly in public. Admit [...]

Jack in the Green
2008-05-03 05:30:08
This takes place in Hastings over the weekend and is alot of fun and a typically English ceremony. ‘Jack’ is paraded through the town before being ceremoniously slain to release the spirit of summer (yay!) Festivities include Morris dancers, live music, lots of beer and a party atmosphere. Well worth going if you are in the vicinity.
