diamond
touted by Sotheby’s for its size and beauty sold at auction
Wednesday to Guess clothing company founder Georges Marciano for just
under $16.2 million

The
jewel—the largest top-quality, brilliant-cut white diamond ever to
appear at auction—had been valued by Sotheby’s at between $13.3 million
and $17.8 million.
Marciano’s winning bid, made by telephone,
came to $16,189,769 including the buyer’s premium. It was just short of
the all-time auction record for a stone or piece of jewelry, a record
held by the same Sotheby’s branch in Geneva for a 100.1-carat diamond
that fetched $16.5 million in 1995.
“We had interest from all
over the world,” said David Bennett, the auction house’s chairman of
jewelry for Europe and the Middle East. “This sale said a lot about the
jewelry market internationally, especially the diamond market. It says
great things about jewels.”

Fake GIA Laser Inscription 2007-12-08 09:41:48 TRADE ALERT
FAKE GIA LASER INSCRIPTION DISCOVERED IN MELBOURNE
The picture above is a photograph of a fake GIA laser inscription on a diamond that was sent in from a jeweller in Melbourne.
When buying a diamond from a Melbourne vendor, the client accidently stumbled upon this latest ruse when he was seeking verification of a GIA graded diamond by DCLA.
The GIA laser inscription number was not registered with the GIA even though it had been laser inscribed with a fake GIA logo and grading report number.
The false laser inscription can be identified by the GIA logo which is a copy , the number of digits which is short one, the font which is incorrect and the fact that the laser inscription has penetrated the diamond causing damage. This also suggests that the diamond inscribed using a hot laser not not a cold laser such as PhotoScribe.

Sifting through the garbage… 2007-12-16 11:28:31 During this time of year we have many vendors that come in with their lines of jewelry they would love us to buy from. We have to take our time to sift through the garbage that some of these vendors are calling jewelry, this is a daily thing at this time of year. Some come into the store they open up their little bags and start showing diamond earrings that I have been seeing for the past 3 to 4 years the same old same old. I even had one vendor coming in with designs I had in my store when I first opened.
Some of these vendors have been with us for years, and know very well what we have in our store what we demand from them for our clients, and still they want to bring this tired old junk. Jewelry shopping at its finest at the mall… 2007-12-20 07:46:17 So here I am with my family yesterday (Sunday afternoon) going window shopping at the Willowbrook Mall in Northern New Jersey.
We pass by Zales and of course I cannot resist taking a gander and playing the part of a curious shopper.
