Flavor of the Day: Tour Filter
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I love the Cold War Kids. Apparently, as I just learned five minutes ago while browsing the net, they had a concert in town this week. Meaning that as I sat home alone listening to them in my apartment with no windows, they rocking out to a crowd of live fans. I'm trying not to be too hard on myself. We all know the pain of missing a great performance. You are innocently on your way to work when you overhear someone talking about the phenomenal concert your favorite band played last night; a concert that came complete with a set list that included rare songs, never before heard songs and a series on encores. It's enough to make you want to take the day off, go home and lie in bed all day listening to that well worn album and hating yourself for not keeping up on the latest tour dates. But really, who has time to keep track of all the concerts going on a daily basis? You itunes song list has so many artists on it would take contstant 24-7 monitoring to keep track of tour dates. Sure

Toasting Art: The Coolest Thing Since Sliced Bread
1970-01-01 00:59:59
White, wheat, rye, cinnamon raisin, Italian, organic, French, smothered with fruit flavored jelly, lovingly wrapped in peanut butter or swimming in cream cheese; toast has always offered up a variety of artful formulas to create the perfect slice. But there are several even more innovative ways to make you daily bread a masterpiece.New Zealand's Toastman Maurice Bennet has been creating works of art using toast and "flame as a paintbrush," for several years and has been featured in lad-mags such as Maxim and FHM. Works include celebrity portraits such as Elvis, imitations of famous works of art, beer bottles and renditions of ancient Maori panel carvings. He toasts thousands of pieces to different shades and places them together to create shade and light. Lennie Payne uses a blowtorch and scrapping tools to create his toast portraits. He flattens and then lacquered to keep the moisture out so the bread stays dry and wont rot or turn moldy. This is done after the bread is toasted

The beat poets have owned a large piece of my heart since I first picked up a copy of Jack Kerouc's 'On the Road." I went to a Y3B Magazine party this week which featured an open PINK Vodka bar and a gift bag. Usually gift bags at these kind of parties consists of crap that gets relegated to a special container under my sink, but in this instance it included two cd's that I gave a listen to.One was rap and not even worth discussing (its now under my sink). The second was a preview album of 23 year old Londoner MIKA's debut "Life in Cartoon Motion," which will be released on Casablanca/Universal Republic on March 27 and includes eleven tracks. (This debut has now been downloaded to my ipod and will be passed amongst my friends)The sampler included three songs. Three amazingly fizzy songs that echo 70's vocal ranges and 80's rock beats infused with 90's style pop. Commonly compared to the Scissor Sisters, the singer told Billboard.com that "In the U.K., they call this pop, but in America it's rock,I consider myself a singer-songwriter -- although there's a bad stigma about the term."But don't

Who: Under The Influence of Giants Where: Knitting Factory - New York, 74 Leonard StreetTel.: (212) 219-3132Time: 8:30pmPrice: $12From their web site:When you call your band Under the Influence of Giants, you're expected to somehow be the sum of your roots, but this L.A. outfit defies easy categorization. As their self-titled debut Island Records album bears out, the Giants' funk-inflected, hook-saturated pop-soul is a combination of the Talking Heads' African poly-rhythmic groove ("Ah-ha," "Got Nuthin'"), the ethereal falsettos of Michael Jackson and Prince ("Mama's Room"), the blue-eyed R&B of Hall & Oates and George Michael ("In the Clouds"), the insinuating melodic pop of Rubber Soul ("Stay Illogical"), Earth, Wind & Fire's horn-driven, noirish funk ("Against All Odds"), McCartney's winsome balladry ("Lay Me Down") and even the throbbing beat of post-hip-hop by way of Madonna ("Meaningless Love").

A Tried And Tested Method - The Longcut

VH1's 'The Agency'
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Tonight at 10pm, VH1 premiers "The Agency" This new reality show (which I just know is going to overcome my obsession with America's Next Top Model) takes an inside look into the modeling industry. The press release states that ""The Agency" is not about glamour. It's about the harsh realities of an industry in which millions of dollars are at stake daily and the competition for talent can lead to both euphoric victories and bitter defeats. From eating disorders to poaching by other agencies, "The Agency" casts an unblinking eye on the super-high-stress jobs of the people who are completely hooked on the business of brokering beauty."So basically: Drama, beautiful people, cut throat cat fights and anorexia. Also, possibly prostitution, being in the words of one Wilhelmina agent: "If people ask me what I do, I give a pretty simple answer: we sell flesh." There is also sure to be plenty of Wilhelmina marketing and conspicuous signage seeing that Sean Patterson, the president of Wil

1970-01-01 00:59:59
Since winning 2nd prize in the B.P. Portrait Awards in 2000, Antony Micallef's work, an edgy mix of graffiti, graphic art and bubblegum pop, has been highly received with sold out shows and mentions in such prestigious publications as the New York Times. He continues to accrue fans and can list several A-lisers such as Jude Law, R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and Brit bad-boy Robbie Williams as clients.Starting Sept. 2008 and ending March 2010, his pieces will be exhibited as a part of the British museums world tour through Europe and Asia. Micallef's work fits perfectly with the show's function and goal to show the symbiotic nature of the art between the two continents. He is highly influenced by his travels in Japan and it's pop culture. In an interview with Scene 360 he says ""My senses had been heavily immersed in fluffy pink, Japanese cartoon characters, neon cities and shit "J-pop.'"This Asian aesthetic is applied to American and British icons such as McDonalds, Gucci, MTV and

Alain Robert: Real Life Super Hero
2007-03-01 23:42:00
Nicknamed Spiderman and the Urban Climber, Alain Robert truly can be considered a real life super hero. In the past eight years, the native Parisian has ascended over seventy skyscrapers and monuments around the world including the Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Opera House, Chicago's Sears Tower and the Sinjuku Center Building in Tokyo. In the course of his climbing Robert has sustained enough serious injuries (comas, fractures to his cranium, nose, wrists, elbows, pelvis, heels) to qualify him as 60% disabled according to the French National Health Organization. He even suffers from vertigo and was told by doctors that he would never climb again. But this did not stop him and he went on to become stronger than ever. Most recently, on February 23, 2007, Roberts climbed the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority Tower. A crowd of 100,000 spectators watched as he completed the climb in only 20 minutes. As if anything could be more amazing than a man scaling an enormous building with his bare hand, Rob

Mike Doughty: Haughty Melodic
2007-03-03 22:59:00
I remember stealing my older cousin Laura’s Soul Coughing cd in junior high and dancing around my room in Ohio to the urban-jazz inflected “Super Bon Bon” and “Walking Round In Circles” as my parents shouted to me to “Turn down the music and stop shaking the floor.” I loved the band, who folded in 2000 due to drugs and miscommunication, but it’s been years since I’ve thought about them. Now, as an adult in my New York apartment, I find myself reminiscing as I repeatedly listen to former front runner Mike Doughty’s infectious solo release Haughty Melodics.I recently stumbled upon the album through a friend and have found myself not only addicted to the entire compilation, but wondering how it has escaped, what I like to believe is my incredibly perceptive radar for so long. Released in 2005 by ATO records, the same label as Dave Matthew’s band, and produced by Semisonic’s Dan Wilson, Haughty Melodics is Mike Doughty’s first “official” solo release as a sing

Joshua Radin: Brewed For A Sad Winter Day
2007-03-08 19:01:00
Joshua Radin, whose mellow acoustic songs harken the talents of Nick Drake and Elliot Smith, is finally got some attention recently. But not for the right reasons. Google his name and the list of pages all lead you to a recent Paris Hilton encounter, in which he witnessed her vomiting all over the stage during her performance after a Jay-Z concert in Vegas a few months back. Radin had sat next to the Grey Goose swigging pop-princess all night and recalls how she ignored him. According to his MySpace page "She never once said hello, nor even looked in my direction." But she isn't known for recognizing, nor possessing, talent. My bet is that a few months from now, he'll be much harder to ignore. With the recent release of a new alblum overflowing with his soft voice and love-torn lyrics, this modern troubadour is sure to quickly top the charts and amass hordes of adoring fans. His album "We Were Here," released by Columbia records and produced by Chris Holmes, is pure poetry. Arctic Monkeys: The Sophmore Effort

Following closely on the success of "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not," the Arctic Monkeys have announced the release of their new alblum "Favourite Worst Nightmare," which will be available internationally on April 23. The first song “Brianstorm,” will come out on April 16, ensuring a build-up for cd sales. The new effort will feature the recording debut of bassist Nick O’Malley, who replaced founding member Andy Nicholson last year.In an interview with Billboard, producer James Ford gave a blasé quote as to the feel of the album saying "It's quite a bit heavier in some places -- there's also some really nice songs on there. Some of the songs maybe [have] more depth to them. [It's] maybe not quite as instant as the first one." However, while “maybe” more depth and “some really nice” songs may seem like setting the bar too low for a band that has won a Grammy, Americans should remember that Ford is British.Track list:BrianstormTeddy PickerD Is for Dange

The Continuing Demise of Britney Spears
2007-03-27 18:45:00
There has been a lot of talk over what Britney could possibly do next to prove herself a complete and total disaster. My bet was safely cast on her becoming impregnated by Ron Birkhead and then marrying Howard Stern. Not the ex-lover of Anna Nicole, that’s way too obvious and as proved by shaving her head, Brit likes to keep fans on their toes. Instead she will marry the gross-out King of Sirius radio himself and they will star together on their own reality show “Chaotic Again” in which Stern smacks her ass with a raw fish for an hour. But no, Britney has once again done the unexpected. The story starts out all peaches-and-cream: She went to church after getting out of rehab. Awe, how nice. Isn’t it sweet that she is now a god fearing ex-drug addict and sinner along with being an ex-pop star? But wait just one second-a soul is not saved by merely donning panties. The story continues with her body guard almost shooting a photographer. How fucking sweet, huh?On a serious note thou

Looking Forward with Bright Eyes (I Love Love Love Conor Oberst!)
2007-03-29 19:53:00
Billboard.com had previously started a firestorm of debate and criticism over Bright Eyes recent decisions. The indie darlings signed with Universal Music Group and also Polydor for overseas distribution. Ravenhouse Ltd. Is their new management company, best known for turning past indie darlings Modest Mouse into a lucrative money-making machine. Additionally, a music video, the first ever to feature Conor , was filmed in Febraury and he’ll be stopping by AOL and a few radio stations to promote “Cassadag.” Ravenhouse Ltd. Management Company. His new manager, Juan Carrera, oversaw Modest Mouse's transition from indie darling to selling more than 1 million copies of its last release. So does this mean that they are in fact selling out? While many are quick to say yes and cast the band aside, I feel obligated to come to their defense. Artists want and deserve to make money. By joining with big name partners Bright Eyes will have a chance to really spread their music to a larger numb

Funny Stuff: Super Deluxe, Avril Lavine Cries Tears of Milk

Super deluxe (www.SuperDeluxe .com,) a web site and social networking community that features original comedy programming, is in fact super funny and a damn good watch while bored at the office or in between bong hits at home. Launched in mid-January, my Comedy Central addiction has since been culled and my endless searching of youtube for material that doesn’t suck has been replaced by the sites short films, sketches, and episodic series. Having attracted over one million viewers, it is more than blatantly apparent that I am not the only one who finds it hilarious. While I watch purely for a hearty laugh, many are attracted the to the fact that it gives them an avenue to easily reach their favorite comedians. Established names and emerging stars such as Dave Foley and Chelsea Parretti, each have their own spot on the site in which they can exhibit exclusive content and promote upcoming appearances and projects. Users are given the ability to contact the talent with messages and

mtvU and Epic Records "Best Music on Campus" Contest
2007-04-03 20:57:00
mtvU, MTV’s college network has joined forces with Epic Records to hold the "Best Music on Campus " (BMOC) contest, which seeks to name the top 50 unsigned college acts in the country. Hopefully this will go over much better than the first time they hooked up in order to relaunch Meneudo, because I think we all know how successful that was. The BMOC awards are an offshoot of its current online site www.BestMusiconCampus.com, which features coverage of college bands and solo acts. The awards will function as a contest with fans voting for their favorites. The winners will receive a promotion, two music videos, a tour and a record deal from mtvU and Epic Records for two full LPs worth up to $1.5 million. The icing on the cake: A debut with a live performance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. From the press release it seems as if this is legit. Unlike American Idol, winners will receive support post-win with a $50,000 cash advance at signing, plus full retail, radio, tour, market

Chris Garneau's "Music for Tourists" is Sweet, Sweet Sugar
2007-04-10 19:27:00
Article as seen on BlogCritics at http://blogcritics.org/writer/brewmasterBrooklinite Chris Garneau’s full-length debut Music for Tourists, took a year and a half to complete and was released in January by Absolutely Kosher. Piano laden and driven by his soft, tender voice, one is instantly overtaken by his fragility and vulnerability.Song after song resounds with sparse melodies, that when paired with Garneau’s whispering vocals, seem fit for a dream world, his voice taking spectral flight into the air and wavering between a whisper and a breathy staccato. He is commonly compared to Sufjan Stevens and Regina Specktor while the influence of the record's producer, Duncan Sheik, is clear in its unabashed emotional honesty. The album draws the listener in with emotional narratives waxing from despair to what could be considered severely understated light heartedness covering topics such as self doubt, eventual death, and Hamburg Helper. What first drew my attention to Garneau was the

Damn You Avril Lavigne! I Surrender.
2007-04-09 23:56:00
For those of you who didn’t see my post last week, which shows a slightly embarrassing and oh-so awkward interview with Avril Lavigne , in which the interviewer asks her if she “cries tears of milk,” let me catch you up: I hate her. Deeply and truly, with a passion that rivals my hatred for Spam (the food) and capri pants. In fact, I think that she is everything that is wrong with the music industry in the sense that she is just an empty canvas that they paint their marketing analysis discoveries on. She is nothing, has zero talent and dresses like a mannequin from Hot Topic, the world’s most commercial goth store in which little nonconformists come together to conform to being “different.” Her pr is amazing though and as a publicist by day, I am impressed. Like a giant machine with enormous rolodexes and wads of money, they have managed to place her everywhere I usually find safe and look to for guidance. Like this weekend when I went to my front door to pick up the mail an

Spiderman 3 Soundtrack: Already Better Than First Two Movies and I haven't Even Heard It Yet

I’m sure I will get a lot of flak for this but I hated Spiderman 1, didn’t see 2 and can’t believe they are making a 3rd. I love Kirtsen Dunst and Toby Maguire, but I can’t buy either of them in the roles of super hottie and super hero. Sardy, whose worked Oasis and Cold War Kids to name a few, features a track listing includes previously unreleased original songs from established and emerging alt-rock and pop bands. “Signal Fire” from multi-platinum UK artists Snow Patrol, is the lead single and sure to be a hit. Hollywood Gets Smart? Turns to Recycling Again
2007-04-13 17:21:00
Why does Hollywood keep remaking classic TV shows? They always suck, never make money and always seem to devalue an actor/actresses talent. (Like hello, Giovanni Rabissi, what happened there with Mod Squad?) While they appeal to a mutli-generational audience they never seem to please any age group.Younger people who haven’t seen the original shows are drawn in by the cast and end up hating the plot line and characters who are usually deeply rooted in catch phrases and manneristic jokes that rely on having seen the original to be funny. Conversely, older people who have seen the original usually have a deep respect for it and just can’t get into having these young Hollywood upstarts playing a character that has been embedded in their brain for twenty years as being a very specific person. So really I have no clue as to why this keeps happening, but yet again the entertainment fat cats, Warner Brothers to be exact, are digging deep into their pockets to produce yet another classic tel

The Pierces Make Me Wet
2007-04-18 23:32:00
Last Tuesday night (not to be confused with last night, proving once again that I am a slow writer) sister duo The Pierces performed at NYC’s new super elite “it” club- of-the-second The Box. Taking the throwback speakeasy’s small stage the girls looked ethereal, the blonde haired Catherine in a vintage-looking grey sequin dress (that I would like to purchase if anyone was there and happened to glimpse the tag) and brunette Alison in a tight black number with loose sparkling bands around her head (also very cute). Their appearance and the setting were enough to make me feel as if I was actually transported back to the roaring 20’s, and even more surprising, had my hormones somehow jumbled in the time travel, morphing me into a salivating lesbian because all I could think was “These girls are gorgeous!”That first feeling of physical attraction then grew into something much deeper and more meaningful as they began to sing with deep, sultry voices, moving side to side in uni
