The Hero Cycle
2007-06-07 12:37:00
Thanks to Janelle Rogers of Green Light Go Publicity for turning me onto tonights band...The Hero Cycle Genre: Indie / Grunge / ShoegazingFrom: Burlington, Vermont United States The Hero Cycle are a six (and occassionally seven) piece band who formed in the Green Mountains of Vermont in 2005 when a group friends who had been playing in various local hardcore and punk bands decided to pool their considerable talents. The band acts as a creative haven for everyone involved resulting in an eclectic and energetic sound that is influenced by bands as raw as Shellac and Big Black, as melodic as Sunny Day Real Estate and as powerful as Dinosaur Jr and more than fulfils their self proclaimed billing as "Broken Social Scene meets Built to Spill". As you'd expect with three guitarists guitars are at the forefront of The Hero Cycle with every riff and hook imagineable being coerced into each song creating a sound that takes your breath away and hides it in in a secret spot under the stairs. Jane Air & Wooden Wand
2007-06-06 16:58:00
Jane AirGenre: Indie / Rock / PopFrom: London, United Kingdom For those old enough to recall there once was a power pop band from Akron, Ohio (Chrissie Hynde's neck of the woods) called Jane Aire and the Belvederes (check out the Power Pop Lovers blogsite where you can download their 1979 album 'ST'). You can file that under irrelevant facts as this Jane Air has nothing to do with the namesake with the Belvederes, forget I even mentioned it! This Jane Air is a different kettle of fish without a hint of power pop. When they're acoustic they sound like Pablo Honey era Radiohead when they rock out they say they sound the Stooges but to this Devil's ears they sound more like Mansun.Go VisitJane Air - Myspace // WebsiteBefore our next band tonight a couple of classic Mansun tracks to brighten your day...MP3 - Mansun - Flourella (Peel Session)MP3 Mansun - Take It Easy Chicken (Peel Session)next up tonight...Wooden Wand Genre: Folk / Experimental / PsychedelicFrom: Knoxville, Tennessee U

The Berg Sans Nipple
2007-06-05 12:17:00
The Berg Sans NippleGenre: Lo-Fi / ElectronicaFrom: Paris, France Yes you read it right this franco-American duo really are called The Berg Sans Nipple (it means the mountain without top), possibly the worst named band in 2007, unless you know differently (email me with any worse names please). Get past the name and The Berg (as I think they should insist on being called) are a decent lo-fo electro band with touches of Sufjan Stevens (take a listen to 'Mystic Song' and tell me it isn't a lost track from 'Illinoise'). The Berg is comprised of the pseudonym-donning Lori Sean Berg and Shane Aspegren. The former is a suave Frenchman from the dirty rues of gay Pariee and the latter is a lanky Scandinavian-looking fellow who actually hails from the dusty plains of Nebraska. While the duo’s organic sound lends support to the rumor that they are actually Siamese twins separated at birth, the reality is that they are two kids both best known for their skills as drummers, trapped in a tan

The Devil Returns

After a brief sojourn to the lovely city of Leicester the Devil is back home and raring to post...The Loose SaluteGenre: Alternative / Pop / CountryFrom: London/Cornwall, United KingdomThere are not many bands that have originated in Cornwall, in fact if you enter "Famous Bands From Cornwall" into Google then you get the following message:Your search - "famous bands from Cornwall" - did not match any documents. The Loose Salute, formed by Ian McCutcheon (drummer of Mojave 3 - ok maybe Mojave 3 are the Cornish exception that proves the rule!) and Lisa Billson who met after Ian heard her singing along to Bob Dylan songs while she cooked in the Fortress rehearsal studios cafe, could be about to change that. Nashvillesque, kinda like Belle & Sebastian whispering in Neil Young's ear, The Loose Salute sound is soft and relaxed, brimming with the languid geniality of their Cornish roots and an aching desire to have been born in Tennessee. With their joyous, life affirming, country flecked son

The Fake Accents
2007-06-10 03:31:00
The Fake Accents Genre: Indie / Punk / RockFrom: Washington DC United States The Fake Accents, when they can be arsed to rouse themselves from their laid back, devil may care approach to life, claim to sound like "the exact moment 2 minutes and 15 seconds into " I Heard Her Call My Name" and for once the band description is spot on. This group of passionate chancers admit that their material is "mostly ripped off of other songs" and it is true that their sound is kinda familiar. Imagine, if you can, The Velvet Underground and The Strokes on the spin cycle in The Homosexuals washing machine, and you have the Fake Accents. This is unpretentious, Pavementesque, lo-fi, slacker rock done for fun and the love of music, and the Fake Accents are the kind of band perennially at number 34 in the John Peel (RIP) Festive Fifty. The Fake Accents are the antithesis of much of the sterilised corporate rock scene and, although my wife thinks they're atrocious (thanks for the critical input Ann), I lo

Is Riot Grrrl Back
2007-06-09 17:11:00
The indie-punk feminist movement riot grrrl reached its height in the 1990s but continues to exert it's influence over alternative cultures as demonstrated by the success of the feminism and riot grrrl influenced The Gossip. The Gossip, don't identify themselves as a riot grrrl band and owe more to the blues of Janis Joplin than the abrasive, confrontational sound of the typical riot grrrl movement bands such as Huggy Bear, Bikini Kill and Bratmobile. But lead singer Beth Ditton has clearly been influenced by the politics of the riot grrrl movement from the girl power agenda (later subverted, marketed and tamed by a group of men who created a set of dolls called the Spice Girls, which incidentally would make a great book From Riot Grrrl to Spice Girl!) to the focus on feminism, from the anti-sexism to the anti-racism. The original Riot Grrrl movement was aggressively independent with it's Do-It-Yourself subculture, female-centric bands. There were riot grrrl festivals and shows; rio

Power Poptastic
2007-06-08 16:17:00
There must be something in the air, maybe it's the onset of summer, maybe it's global warming, maybe it's nostalgia brought on by watching too many episodes of the BBCs Life on Mars but everywhere I turn I encounter bands that hark back to the late 70s Power Pop explosion (see previous post on ). Tonights second post features another band who have Power Pop pumping through their veins... FrisbieGenre : Rock / Pop / PowerpopFrom: Chicago, Illinois United States In 2000, Frisbie released its debut album 'The Subversive Sounds of Love' which was greeted with a chorus of critical acclaim. The Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot called it “the power pop album of the year,” while notoriously prickly Chicago Sun-Times critic Jim Derogatis said, “the songs are so strong. And Frisbie shows no signs of running short on inspiration.” Personal trials delayed a follow-up, but now Frisbie has completed 'New Debut', a 40-minute burst of imaginative and affecting songs. Gary B and the Notions

Gary B and the NotionsGenre: Rock / Indie / PopFrom: Baltimore, Maryland United StatesGary Barrett JR is no new face to the Baltimore indie scene. Over the last six years under the stage name Your Imaginary Friend, he’s given hundreds of solo performances peppered with opening slots for Sufjan Stevens, The Hold Steady, Of Montreal, The Dismemberment Plan, and The Mountain Goats, as well as his favorite songwriter, Franklin Bruno. Backed by the excellent Notions, Gary B sounds like Aztec Camera if Roddy Frame had never heard of throat lozenges. If you think that Elvis Costello lost his way after 'Armed Forces' or 'Imperial Bedroom', if you think that Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal) has a great voice, if you're an admirer of Ted Leo or even if you think that those power popping new wavers Cheap Trick deserve to be rehabilitated in the great pop/rock firmament then Gary B and the Notions could just be the band you're looking for. Mr B' s hand distributed hundreds of copies of his th

The Devil's Pleasures
2007-06-13 14:21:00
Pleasure ForeverGenre: PsychedelicFrom: Los Angele, California, United States 'Bodies Need Rest' is a collection of unreleased and rare Pleasure Forever recordings. The San Francisco based trio released two albums on Sub Pop -- a self-titled disc in 2001 and Alter in 2003 -- before taking an indefinite hiatus. The mysterious imagery and allusions to dark excess on Pleasure Forever's self-titled debut was often considered a concept album that celebrated living life on the brink of collapse. On 'Alter', the group's sound grew evermore lush, heavy and sinister while maintaining its warped '60s pop undercurrent. Its songs driven by piano, guitar and drums combine swooning melodies with ominous tones and the haunting essence of antique American music, often earning Pleasure Forever comparisons to The Black Heart Procession, Arcade Fire, Nick Cave an the Bad Seeds, The Doors, The Earlies and Afghan Whigs, amongst others. 'Bodies Need Rest' was originally intended to be an EP of cove

The Devil Gets Dirty
2007-06-12 14:41:00
Dirty On Purpose Genre: Indie / Pop / ShoegazeFrom : Brooklyn, New York, United States As well as being a gang of exceptionaly good looking lads (check out their photos on the left), Dirty on Purpose are an ethereal (one of the most overused words in shoegazing history I know but hey I'm no journalist!), Brooklyn four-piece with a fine line in lush, dreamy indie-pop with the occasional squall of distorted feedback. Their infectious blend of fuzzy noise pop and sweet vocals, is heavily influenced by Yo La Tengo, Stereolab, Spiritualized and early 90's shoegazer groups such as Chapterhouse , Ride and Slowdive. Another band that DOP remind the Devil of are the best band on Sarah Records, The Field Mice every time I hear 'Light Polution' I'm reminded of classic Field mice tracks such as 'Sensitive' and 'Let's Kiss And Make Up'. Ethos

EthosGenre: Indie / Glam / ShoegazeFrom: Detroit, Michigan United StatesMelancholy with a hint of swagger, glum rock with a hint of humour, depression with a hint of wit, obsession with obscure stars from the dim and distant past, remind you of anyone? It's hard for Ethos, and chief songwriter Christian Burke, to shake off those Smiths / Morrissey comparisons and they don't help themselves with song titles such as , 'This Head is Haunted', 'Gonna Die' and 'Bad Day'. Christian's semi operatic seductive, baritone vocal style does recall that of Morrissey and, if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then one Stephen Morrissey must be quite flattered. However, for all their similarities to the Smiths, Ethos remind me more of Sack, an Irish band once feted by Morrissey ,and Teardrop Explodes (check out 'We Like It Wild'). Like Sack, Ethos have chosen the path less travelled, spurning the latest musical trends in an effort to make music that is, well, out of time. It's n

The Fever Few
2007-06-17 08:49:00
The Fever FewGenre: Indie / Acoustic / Folk RockFrom: Brooklyn, New York United States Listening to The Fever Few's myspace tracks it's no surprise that singer songwriter, Bethany Spiers (once of the critically acclaimed Sleep Station), cites Chan Marshall (Cat Power) as one of her influences. The mesmerising, quavering voice dealing out sparse, angst-ridden and intimate songs of such fragile, brittle beauty that you expect them to shatter on impact is on a par with classic Cat Power. In addition to the obvious (and some may say lazy) comparisons with Chan Marshall , Fever Few songs also betray influences such as, The Red House Painters, Beth Orton , Suzanne Vega, Iron and Wine and Mazzy Star . Like fellow Brooklynites, Hem, The Fever Few are at the forefront of a young , and unfortunately rather beardy, progressive folk movement that shows no sign of running out of steam. People Noise
2007-06-15 15:09:00
People Noise Genre: Rock / Psychedelic / ShoegazeFrom: Louisville, Kentucky United States People Noise is a name that demands to be heard. They began making music in early 2006 after a ten year involvement with VHS or Beta came to a halt. One of the founding members of VoB, Zeke Buck, together with Matt Johnson on drums, have set out to do some of the things that they were never really able to do before in past groups. There is a very human and somewhat introverted playfulness that appears on songs like 'A Million Lives' & 'The Sun & The Moon, The Moon & The Sea'. Desperate and spirited Aphex Twin like moments which at very times breaks in an external guitar driven frenzy. It gives quick glimpse to some of the earlier songs on their upcoming album (songs like 'Sedation', and 'Harrison Bergeron'). Their range recalls some of the earlier alternative rock days of bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana & Radiohead, yet still birthing a sincerity and un-retro quality altogethe

Spare Us The Clutters
2007-06-20 14:19:00
The CluttersGenre : Rock / Punk / IndieFrom : Nashville, Tennessee United StatesDelivering three minute, energetic, primeval punk anthems with choruses as memorable, and as simple, as your first sexual encounter, it's no surprise that The Clutters have been described as Nashville's answer to The Ramones. One listen to “Rockaway”with it's familiar ‘Hey, hey’ refrain can't help but evoke memories of sweaty evenings at CBGBs even from a UK bound Devil like me. The Clutters, who are named after a real–life Kansas family whose slaughter was detailed in Truman Capote's book, In Cold Blood, are a Ramones for these sexually enlightened times with a feminine touch thrown in in for good measure. Singer-guitarist Doug Lehmann and bassist Jake Rosswog are more than effectively supplemented by the big-beat, cymbal-heavy drums of, the un Meg like, Steph Filippini. With their catchy, garage blues, Doug's nasal voice and the girlish backing vocals on tracks like ‘9999 (Ways to Hate

Free Bejebus CD

BejebusGenre: Electro / Rock / AlternativeFrom: United KingdomIn the Devil's eyes there are far too few bands who have been influenced by the mighty Muse and, astonishingly, even less who have been influenced by the The Cooper Temple Clause. Add Radiohead into the mix and you have Bejebus, and to their credit they aren't flattered by the comparisons. Melodramatic and angsty with the merest hint of prog and a powerful scent of of space-disco from a parallel universe and that's just one song, 'Control' (available for download from their Myspace site) which has been on constant play on the Devil's media player and would not sound out of place on 'Origin of Symmetry'.As if that wasn't enough the band are offering a free 7 track CD and all you have to do is go to their myspace site and message them your address (they also promise that they'll only send the cd and won't send any rubbish through your door). Dark Little Rooms
2007-06-23 14:14:00
Dark Little Rooms Genre: Alternative / Experimental / RockFrom: United States Dark Little Rooms is the song writing vehicle of Scott Crowder. From 2001-2005 Crowder and band alternated between writing, recording and playing shows with the likes of StellastarrStellastarr*, French Kicks, Smog & Denali. For latest album, 'Foolish Beauty', Crowder recorded most of the tracks at his home in Richmond, Virginia, drawing inspiration from other home recordings such as Bruce Springsteen's “Nebraska” and Jeff Buckley's “Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk”. With Crowder's husky, flexible voice and their brooding, moody piano lead glum rock, Dark Little Rooms could be the ultimate in tribute bands as they manage to sound like Coldplay ('In Love and Trouble'), Elbow and Keane, Ocean Rain era Echo and the Bunnymen ('Nothing I Wouldn't Do'), 1990s era U2 ('Didn't I Say I Was Young'), Richard Hawley('Wave Goodbye') and Nick Cave without ever appearing like a mere musical ph

The Gallows Are Ready
2007-06-22 01:17:00
Gallows Genre: Punk / RockFrom: Hertfordshire, London and South East United KingdomDischordant English Punk band Gallows, are probably one of the most talked about bands in the UK at the moment. If their press coverage over the last six months was placed end to end it would reach around the earth twice, probably (note this is not a scientific fact so please no emails), and yes the Devil's blog is usually reserved for bands that have not received the oxygen of publicity that they deserve. But Gallows are something a little special hence they've sneaked onto the Devil's blog. So what makes them special? Well for a start this is a band that has more attitude than a lorryful of preteens with Asbos, more passion than a teenage suicide pact, more anger than Henry Rollins at a Republican rally and a band on which everyone has an opinion. They claim to have formed with the sole intention of making music to piss people off and their blend of chaotic discord and viciously raging vocals certai

Indonesia Rocks 3 - The Final Selection
2007-06-27 10:48:00
Tonight is the last post in the short series on the Indonesia n music scene. It's been an interesting detour from the usual UK/US bands that have dominated the Devil's blog since it was launched last August. What I've found most exciting and exhilarating about the Indonesian scene is that it seems a lot less concerned about appearing 'cool' or having the right haircut and is therefore much more fun. While there is an element of mimicking the US and UK scenes there is a refreshing variety which is reflected in the three bands tonight. The bands also have some fabulous names such as the first band up tonight... 70 Orgasm ClubGenre: Rock / Funk / PsychedelicIf you're looking for some crunching, funking, bass thumping, freaky, kinky, raw grooving, fast moving, psychedelic soul then get on down to the winner of the worlds best named band for 2007, 70s Orgasm Club. BirdmonsterGenre: Rock / Rock / RockFrom: San Fancisco. California, United StatesFormer editorial assistant at Wired Peter Arcuni, formed Birdmonster in 2004 with childhood friend, bassist Justin Tenuto, guitarist and pianist David Klein and drummer Zach Winter. Quite the entrepreneur Arcuni got the bad a number of gigs by offering to fill in opening act slots and courting Internet radio stations, like San Francisco's BagelRadio.com. This lead to the bands first high-visibility show, opening for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The band released their self-titled EP in December 2004 with a number of critics comparing their shrapnel bursts of guitar and harshly intoned vocals to Lonesome Crowded West-era Modest Mouse. In 2007 you can still hear traces of Modest Mouse but Birdmonster are now painting on a much broader canvas and their sound has progressed to take in, Built To Spill, The Libertines (minus the Albion fixation, the cockney accents, Kate Moss, and the self destructive urges), The

After last weeks epic Glastonbury where the star attraction, especially if the only view of the world you get is from the pages of the not so glorious British tabloid press, was the mud it seems somehow appropriate to feature Fields on the Devil's blog.FieldsGenre: Psychedelic / RockFrom: Birmingham/Rekjavik/London, United KingdomIf your life has been empty because theres never been a band that sounds like a mash-up of Mansun, Ride, Pentangle, Super Furry Animals and Morning Runner produced by Phil Spector then rejoice because your life is now complete. Duel vocalists Nick and Thorunn compliment each other while the band creates a supersonic backdrop for them to croon over. Zookeeper Genre: Indie / Melodramatic Popular SongFrom: Austin, Texas, United StatesChris Simpson has always been something of a virtuoso when it comes to songwriting. So it should come as no surprise that the former frontman for influential late 90s' bands Mineral and The Gloria Record has spent the last several years hunkered down in Austin, Texas, doing exactly what he does best: creating voluminous works of intelligent, naked rock n' roll. Only this time he is taking a distinct departure from his emo-indie days. His latest work, a solo, self-titled EP created under his new moniker, Zookeeper, bursts with melodies and rhythms that don't suggest Radiohead's The Bends so much as they do Van Morrison's 's Astral Weeks, and a gusto that calls to mind T-Rex more than U2. Fans old and new are raving about his recent musical turn which Hybrid Magazine gushed, “may just be the best jangling, loose pop record you hear all year.”The new body of work, the recently released Zookeeper
