The Hero Cycle
2007-06-07 12:37:00
Thanks to Janelle Rogers of Green Light Go Publicity for turning me onto tonights band...The Hero Cycle Genre: Indie / Grunge / ShoegazingFrom: Burlington, Vermont United States The Hero Cycle are a six (and occassionally seven) piece band who formed in the Green Mountains of Vermont in 2005 when a group friends who had been playing in various local hardcore and punk bands decided to pool their considerable talents. The band acts as a creative haven for everyone involved resulting in an eclectic and energetic sound that is influenced by bands as raw as Shellac and Big Black, as melodic as Sunny Day Real Estate and as powerful as Dinosaur Jr and more than fulfils their self proclaimed billing as "Broken Social Scene meets Built to Spill". As you'd expect with three guitarists guitars are at the forefront of The Hero Cycle with every riff and hook imagineable being coerced into each song creating a sound that takes your breath away and hides it in in a secret spot under the stairs. The Berg Sans Nipple
2007-06-05 12:17:00
The Berg Sans NippleGenre: Lo-Fi / ElectronicaFrom: Paris, France Yes you read it right this franco-American duo really are called The Berg Sans Nipple (it means the mountain without top), possibly the worst named band in 2007, unless you know differently (email me with any worse names please). Get past the name and The Berg (as I think they should insist on being called) are a decent lo-fo electro band with touches of Sufjan Stevens (take a listen to 'Mystic Song' and tell me it isn't a lost track from 'Illinoise'). The Berg is comprised of the pseudonym-donning Lori Sean Berg and Shane Aspegren. The former is a suave Frenchman from the dirty rues of gay Pariee and the latter is a lanky Scandinavian-looking fellow who actually hails from the dusty plains of Nebraska. While the duo’s organic sound lends support to the rumor that they are actually Siamese twins separated at birth, the reality is that they are two kids both best known for their skills as drummers, trapped in a tan

The Devil Returns
2007-06-05 12:13:00
After a brief sojourn to the lovely city of Leicester the Devil is back home and raring to post...The Loose SaluteGenre: Alternative / Pop / CountryFrom: London/Cornwall, United KingdomThere are not many bands that have originated in Cornwall, in fact if you enter "Famous Bands From Cornwall" into Google then you get the following message:Your search - "famous bands from Cornwall" - did not match any documents. The Loose Salute, formed by Ian McCutcheon (drummer of Mojave 3 - ok maybe Mojave 3 are the Cornish exception that proves the rule!) and Lisa Billson who met after Ian heard her singing along to Bob Dylan songs while she cooked in the Fortress rehearsal studios cafe, could be about to change that. Nashvillesque, kinda like Belle & Sebastian whispering in Neil Young's ear, The Loose Salute sound is soft and relaxed, brimming with the languid geniality of their Cornish roots and an aching desire to have been born in Tennessee. With their joyous, life affirming, country flecked son

Is Riot Grrrl Back
2007-06-09 17:11:00
The indie-punk feminist movement riot grrrl reached its height in the 1990s but continues to exert it's influence over alternative cultures as demonstrated by the success of the feminism and riot grrrl influenced The Gossip. The Gossip, don't identify themselves as a riot grrrl band and owe more to the blues of Janis Joplin than the abrasive, confrontational sound of the typical riot grrrl movement bands such as Huggy Bear, Bikini Kill and Bratmobile. But lead singer Beth Ditton has clearly been influenced by the politics of the riot grrrl movement from the girl power agenda (later subverted, marketed and tamed by a group of men who created a set of dolls called the Spice Girls, which incidentally would make a great book From Riot Grrrl to Spice Girl!) to the focus on feminism, from the anti-sexism to the anti-racism. The original Riot Grrrl movement was aggressively independent with it's Do-It-Yourself subculture, female-centric bands. There were riot grrrl festivals and shows; rio

Power Poptastic
2007-06-08 16:17:00
There must be something in the air, maybe it's the onset of summer, maybe it's global warming, maybe it's nostalgia brought on by watching too many episodes of the BBCs Life on Mars but everywhere I turn I encounter bands that hark back to the late 70s Power Pop explosion (see previous post on ). Tonights second post features another band who have Power Pop pumping through their veins... FrisbieGenre : Rock / Pop / PowerpopFrom: Chicago, Illinois United States In 2000, Frisbie released its debut album 'The Subversive Sounds of Love' which was greeted with a chorus of critical acclaim. The Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot called it “the power pop album of the year,” while notoriously prickly Chicago Sun-Times critic Jim Derogatis said, “the songs are so strong. And Frisbie shows no signs of running short on inspiration.” Personal trials delayed a follow-up, but now Frisbie has completed 'New Debut', a 40-minute burst of imaginative and affecting songs. Where its debut was root

Gary B and the Notions
2007-06-08 12:44:00
Gary B and the NotionsGenre: Rock / Indie / PopFrom: Baltimore, Maryland United StatesGary Barrett JR is no new face to the Baltimore indie scene. Over the last six years under the stage name Your Imaginary Friend, he’s given hundreds of solo performances peppered with opening slots for Sufjan Stevens, The Hold Steady, Of Montreal, The Dismemberment Plan, and The Mountain Goats, as well as his favorite songwriter, Franklin Bruno. Backed by the excellent Notions, Gary B sounds like Aztec Camera if Roddy Frame had never heard of throat lozenges. If you think that Elvis Costello lost his way after 'Armed Forces' or 'Imperial Bedroom', if you think that Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal) has a great voice, if you're an admirer of Ted Leo or even if you think that those power popping new wavers Cheap Trick deserve to be rehabilitated in the great pop/rock firmament then Gary B and the Notions could just be the band you're looking for. Mr B' s hand distributed hundreds of copies of his th

Free Bejebus CD
2007-06-19 15:21:00
BejebusGenre: Electro / Rock / AlternativeFrom: United KingdomIn the Devil's eyes there are far too few bands who have been influenced by the mighty Muse and, astonishingly, even less who have been influenced by the The Cooper Temple Clause. Add Radiohead into the mix and you have Bejebus, and to their credit they aren't flattered by the comparisons. Melodramatic and angsty with the merest hint of prog and a powerful scent of of space-disco from a parallel universe and that's just one song, 'Control' (available for download from their Myspace site) which has been on constant play on the Devil's media player and would not sound out of place on 'Origin of Symmetry'.As if that wasn't enough the band are offering a free 7 track CD and all you have to do is go to their myspace site and message them your address (they also promise that they'll only send the cd and won't send any rubbish through your door). Bejebus have given away thousands of CDs over the last year and, in an incr

Birdmonster
2007-06-24 06:21:00
BirdmonsterGenre: Rock / Rock / RockFrom: San Fancisco. California, United StatesFormer editorial assistant at Wired Peter Arcuni, formed Birdmonster in 2004 with childhood friend, bassist Justin Tenuto, guitarist and pianist David Klein and drummer Zach Winter. Quite the entrepreneur Arcuni got the bad a number of gigs by offering to fill in opening act slots and courting Internet radio stations, like San Francisco's BagelRadio.com. This lead to the bands first high-visibility show, opening for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The band released their self-titled EP in December 2004 with a number of critics comparing their shrapnel bursts of guitar and harshly intoned vocals to Lonesome Crowded West-era Modest Mouse. In 2007 you can still hear traces of Modest Mouse but Birdmonster are now painting on a much broader canvas and their sound has progressed to take in, Built To Spill, The Libertines (minus the Albion fixation, the cockney accents, Kate Moss, and the self destructive urges), The

"I cannot pretend to feel impartial about colors. I rejoice with the brilliant ones and am genuinely sorry for the poor browns." Winston Churchill You will croak, you little clownWhen you mess with President Brown Jello BiafraTo celebrate the accession to the long craved for position of Prime Minister of whats left of the UK a slight diversion for the blog with a post dedicated to Brown!! The 5 things the Devil would like to see Gordon Brown prioritise in his in tray: 1. Abolish tuition fees to provide2. Pull Troops out of Iraq as quickly as humanly possible3. Restore the money that he "borrowed" from Britains pensioners 4. Assert Britains independence from Europe - centralisation of undemocratic power is the antithesis of true socialism5. Drop any plans to extend pre-charge detention beyond 28 days. and while he's at it could he please wipe the smirk off David Miliband's face!Comment or email me with you thoughts on what you would like the new Prime Minister to focus on.Introducin
