Hope Is Noise 2007-05-07 12:52:00 Hope Is Noise
Genre: Rock / Alternative / PunkFrom: Cork, IrelandCork's noise merchants Hope is Noise were originally formed in 2002 as The New Messiahs (which was a great name). However a dose of bad luck in 2005, when they lost their practice room and 7,000 euros worth of equipment in a fire, prompted the name change and they haven't looked back since. Furious and intense with anguished screams and squalling guitars, this is literate punk that stomps and rages about the room like a chafed bull. Reminiscent of emotive noiseniks Fugazi the band serve up Nirvanaesque scream-a-longs that effortlessly combine the melodic clatter of early Idlewild with the angry young man polemic of McCarthy) and with song titles like 'I Should Have Hit You Harder' and 'My Head Is In The Clouds, My Feet Are In Your Face' Hope is Noise are just about as good at song titles as the much lamented Mclusky.Go TryMP3 - Hope Is Noise - I Should Have Hit You HarderMP3 - Hope Is Noise - Gods Short Of Trinity (D

Eagle and Talon 2007-05-06 19:54:00 Los Angeles, the largest city in the state of California and the second-largest in the United States in terms of population an alpha world city with a population of over 4 million people. The city was founded in 1781 by Spanish Captain Rivera y Moncada. It was a part of Spain then Mexico, when Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, until 1848, when Mexico ceded California to the United States by treaty at the conclusion of the Mexican-American War. The city and its immediate surrounding vicinity lead the world in producing popular entertainment—such as motion picture, television, and recorded music—which forms the base of Los Angeles's international fame and global status. The Hand EP - The Mekano Set 2007-05-09 19:38:00 The Mekano SetThe Hand EPMeccano is a model construction kit comprising re-usable metal strips, plates, angle girders, wheels, axles and gears, with nuts and bolts to connect the pieces. It is a versatile constructional medium enabling the building of a variety of working models and mechanical devices. It also has absolutely nothing to do with the Mekano Set !The Mekano Set cram more talent, excitement and pre coital energy into a five track EP than most bands in a 10 album career. This, the first Mekano Set EP, has five demos that seethe and surge, convulse and contort, twirl and twine. This is horny female electro goth that makes maximum use of the effects pedal and sparing use of the vocoder, this is the sound of melancholic synth rock as sexual stimulant.First track 'The Hand' , with it's distorted vocals and heavy breathing, sounds like a pre orgasmic P J Harvey during a particularly intensive foreplay session with the Sister of Mercy (the band that is not the religious order!!
Boycott Mars 2007-05-14 20:47:00 For no apparent reason, other than its probably a little cheaper, the recipe for Mars bars has been changed to include animal products. Other big brands from the same company -including Snickers, Galaxy, Twix, Bounty, Milky Way, Maltesers and Minstrels - are also affected. From this month, chocolate manufacturer Masterfoods has started using rennet - an enzyme taken from the stomachs of newborn calves - to make whey for its products. Any bar with a 'best before' date after October 1st this year is now no longer classed as vegetarian. So well done Masterfoods killing calves as part of your efforts to make Britain obese. Even if the decision is reversed I for one will never touch another Mars product. You can, however, make a difference. Mars have said that they will offer a refund to anyone who has bought a bar but does not wish to eat it. So if every vegetarian in the UK bought a couple of mars bars and then sent them in for a refund Mars profits would suffer because not only would th Read more:Boycott
Miss Violetta Beauregarde 2007-05-13 20:49:00 Miss Violetta BeauregardeGenre: Screamo / Electro / GrindcoreFrom: ItalyMiss Violetta Beauregarde is the bizarre, eclectic, one-girl electro-punk project of Italian performer Cristina Gauri. The aforementioned Cristina screeches and screams, yelps and snarls, like an over caffeinated banshee, against a background of ear-percing electronic beeps and squawks reminiscent of an electro Huggy Bear or Bikini Kill or a female Alec Empire with Tourettes. If you have a strange sexual fetish for being yelled at by angry young Italian ladies having a temper-tantrum while beating you around the head with an out of tune Casio then Miss V B is the girl for you. Disappointingly for this Devil Cristina's back-story includes time as a Suicide Girl but maybe her anger at all those chauvenistic and inadequate indie boys who get off on pictures of naked punkettes is her motivation to produce such humourously brilliant, sarcastic, spite filled invective. Aerogramme RIP 2007-05-13 10:03:00 AereogrammeGenre: Rock / Electronica / ExperimentalFrom: Glasgow, Scotland United KingdomScottish alternative/progressive four-piece Aereogramme formed in April 1998, releasing four critically well received albums and a number of great singles and eps in their nine year existence. Their final album, the excellent My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go was released in the UK, Europe and the US on 29th January 2007 and includes 'Nightmares' which is one of the Devil's favourite tracks of 2007 so far. On May 11 2007, in a Myspace message board post, the band announced they were calling it a day: "It is with heavy hearts that we tell you all that Aereogramme have decided to split up. Reasons are multiple and complex. It is however fair to say that the never ending financial struggle coupled with an almost superhuman ability to dodge the zeitgeist have taken their toll, ensuring that we just don't have any fight left in us. 65 Days Of Static 2007-05-12 20:52:00 65 Days Of StaticGenre: Experimental / Industrial / ElectronicaFrom: Sheffield, United Kingdom 65 Days of Static are an instrumental Math Rock / Post-rock band hailing from Sheffield, United Kingdom who have been around long enough to release a couple of albums and be hailed as the new Mogwai, the new Godspeed You Black Emperor and even the new Explosions In The Sky. Like these bands 65 Days Of Static major on heavy, progressive, guitar-driven instrumentals but the way they weave electronically skittish beats and quiet orchestral sections into the maelstrom of guitars is a neat twist that makes them much more than mere post-rock copyists. For their third album, 'The Destruction of Small Ideas', the electronics have decided to put their feet up and have a cup of tea whilst the epic thashing guitars do all the hard work. Although their third album is a more subtle, quieter, more reflective album than their first two, 65 Days Of Static have still delivered an album that begs to be playe
Thrushes 2007-05-12 08:41:00 That much maligned musical genre, Shoegazing continues to defy those critics who tried to bury it along with Grebo and Crusty. With the likes of Serena Maneesh and Amusement Parks On Fire recreating the sound for the 21st century shoegazing is possibly even more popular than in its late 80s heyday. Todays post features a relative newbie on the shoegazing scene who, if there is any justice in the world, will be taking their rightful place on the leadership committee of the Newgazing movement. Champions are yet another amazing band hailing from Los Angeles. What are they putting in the water over there and when will it be available in the mother country? They claim The Who and Mozart as influences but to this Devil's ears they sound more like Thom Yorke's love child from a brief liaison with The Jesus Lizard ('Power Hungry Mega Hurt'), Arcade Fire on downers ('Nice Clean Shirt') or the result of a mad scientists experiment to extract the musical essence out of Wolf Parade and British Sea Power ('The Box'). Bloody Heads 2007-05-20 13:00:00 Bloody Heads
Genre: Rock / Rock / RockFrom: California, United StatesThe origins of Bloody Heads can be traced back to a middle school on the Central Coast of California around the year 1992. Thirteen years later, the first of many shows was performed to enthusiastic audiences from San Francisco, south to Los Angeles. To this day a strong following remains. Bloody Heads songs deal with the important political issues of the day such as: pirates, squid, dead presidents, bill collectors gone wild, bank tellers with secret sex-lives, political leaders with attitudes, ships full of sea-men, hot kids with haircuts, lovers in safari hats, the meaning of Ahab, the motives of Jonah, the secret thoughts of penetrated whales, the circus, twisting and pouting, stomping and shouting, and of course, salad. With their quirky stories and rag tag and bobtail garage pop, Bloody Heads bring to mind Hot Hot Heat, The Violent Femmes with a dash of Jonathan Richman thrown in for good measure. Go TryMP3

Southerly 2007-05-17 22:01:00 SoutherlyGenre: Breakbeat / Showtunesfrom: Portland, Oregon, Portland, United States The closest most so-called pop auteurs come to multi-tasking is mustering a balance between singer and songwriter. Southerly, the nom-de-tune of Krist Krueger is the product of a bona fide DIY visionary. Not only does Krueger sing, write and arrange the music, he's a seasoned recording engineer, record label manager and booking agent. He remains hands-on in all aspects of his music. The Portland artist's lush, orchestral pop on new album, 'Storyteller & The Gossip Columnist', is reminiscent of The Auteurs, Pony Club, The Divine Comedy, The Decemberists, The National, Brendan Benson, and former Tindersticks frontman Stuart Staples. Krueger recorded the second Southerly album, with his own orchestra and horn arrangements, fleshing songs which centre on his otherwise intimate singing style. Recently dubbed “a one man musical army” by Skratch Magazine, on 'Storyteller & The Gossip Columnist'
Coltrane Motion 2007-05-22 15:01:00 Coltrane Motion
Genre: Indie / Electronica / AlternativeFrom: Chicago, Illinois United StatesColtrane Motion has its origins in a handful of lo-fi CD-R and compilation releases, culminating in 2005's well-received No Well OK Maybe Just A Little EP, and a series of tours across the US & Canada. Their frantic live show has been described by the press as an 'exuberant seizure' and 'the cool kids in programming class', its dance-punk intensity a far cry from your usual laptop performances. Lead singer Michael Bond records sixties- obsessed electronic pop in his home studio, while guitarist Matt Dennewitz covers it all in wailing distortion and delay at their live shows - the result is a raucous wall of sound built out of drum loops and fuzzed-out melodies, held together by swirling synths and organ drones. It's an indie rock dance record that merges LCD Soundsystem with New Order and then overlays some early 90s shoegazing and 60s soul to creat something that is more than post pun Read more:Coltrane

Which is quite ironic really given their name and the 'love and peace' vibe of their music. They've received some national coverage including a live broadcast from Peel Acres on Valentine's Day 2002 and an LP of the week in the Sunday Times. They are, however, a band that divide opinions as the following comments from the BBC Wales Music site testify:"It's perhaps a sign that since this review the talented members were forced out by band politics leaving the surviving members to further disappear into their own navels and mad hippie uncles record collection. The Third Of The Bedroom Music Trio 2007-05-27 04:52:00 Trevor ChildsGenre: BedroomMusic
/ Pop / Psychedelic From: Berkeley, California United StatesAnyone who is familiar with Oakland based wunderband The Lovemakers may already have some prior experience of the third of the devil's 'Bedroom Music' makers, Trevor Childs. Before The Lovemakers, Scott Blonde had a band called Applesaucer, which was led by Blonde and co-songwriter Trevor Childs. Applesaucer was well known in the Bay Area for its huge live sound and ripping live shows, and before its untimely demise played regular gigs at Slim's, The Fillmore, and other respected Bay Area venues. Ultimately calling it quits, both Blonde and Childs went on to make music on their own terms: Blonde formed The Lovemakers, signed with Interscope, and brought 80's pop music back with a hit record. Childs hunkered down in his studio to write songs and record on his own time. Both very talented, they affected each other - The Lovemakers definitely took a little bit of Trevor Childs with them, and

Genre: Bedroom Music / Pop / Rock / IndieFrom: Seattle, Washington United StatesThe second of this weekends purveyors of 'Bedroom Music', Herman Jolly is a Northwest Prodigal Son. Having had his taste of the big time with his band Sunset Valley back in the late 90's, headlining big shows and living the rock star life got tiresome for Jolly and he moved to Montana with his wife and child, as any authentic backwoods type would do. Settling down there he decamped to his bedroom to make records and release them at his own pace. Herman, however, didn't become a hermit, occasionally regrouping with Sunset Valley for a show or new recording here and there. His languid twanging lo-fi, pop shimmers like a distant mirage in the Sahara. He's started recording in his bedroom (which has worked out well for the Bedroom Trio - see last weeks postings on the Devil's blog) and, although he confesses it's not mixed properly, it still sounds

Get past the name and The Berg (as I think they should insist on being called) are a decent lo-fo electro band with touches of Sufjan Stevens (take a listen to 'Mystic Song' and tell me it isn't a lost track from 'Illinoise'). The Berg is comprised of the pseudonym-donning Lori Sean Berg and Shane Aspegren. The former is a suave Frenchman from the dirty rues of gay Pariee and the latter is a lanky Scandinavian-looking fellow who actually hails from the dusty plains of Nebraska. While the duo’s organic sound lends support to the rumor that they are actually Siamese twins separated at birth, the reality is that they are two kids both best known for their skills as drummers, trapped in a tan
