The Jakpot
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Genre: Indie / Alternative /Nu ModFrom: Manchester, United KingdomWith songs about not leaving a girl because you haven't got a job or borrowing money of "yer mam" (your mother for those who have yet to take the Manchester dialect Linguiphone course) to take a girl out to see your favourite band, the Jakpot (not going to win best bandname of the year guys!) are risking comparison with a popular northern band from the other side of the Pennines. It is very difficult to shake the term "Manchester's answer to the Arctic Monkeys "(there I've said it) from any review. But, my loyal friends, dig a little deeper and you will see that in addition to those obvious, and probably annoying to the band, references there's more to this band than crap name and similarities to the Monkeys (there it's that name again). Granted the lyrical subject matter is very similar to that of the Monkeys (that's the last time they will be mentioned in this review, honest) but it's littered with the typical n

Kill The Young
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Genre: Alternative / Rock / PunkFrom: Manchester, United Kingdom Now this is the dogs b*******. This band are going to be huge, they are going to be so big that you'll have to buy a high rise condo in Central Manchester and live on the roof just to see the soles of their Converse. Based in Manchester, Kill the Young are three hardworking brothers in their early twenties who are already veterans of over 450 gigs. This hard work has clearly paid off because their track Addiction is already marked down as one of the Devil's tracks of the year. Unless there is something out there so arse weldingly amazing that it should wear a hat and call itself God, Kill The Young are on target for The Devil's track of the month and we've still got a third of the month left. If you're looking for choruses that crash like trees in a hurricane and anthems so arresting they are wearing Policemans Helmets (stop giggling in the corner) then check out Kill The Poor. They have all the right ingredients for

The Devil Returns
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Hey The Devil is back from his trips to Chicago and Atlanta, a little older, a little wiser and a little poorer!! Stayed at the coolest hotel in Chicago, The Hard Rock, in the Elvis Presley suite no less. I was offered the Elton John and the Prince suite but only the King's suite was good enough for this Devil!Wow there is such a lot to catch up on so on with the news...The Low Edges Again Yes I know I go on about this band but Christ they deserve to be massive and it's my blogsite and I'll post what I want to! Anyway great news of three gigs in Berlin for the fabulous Low Edges. Even better one of the Devil's other favourite bands, Gifthorse, are appearing on the same bill!. If you haven't heard Happy Daggers by Gifthorse then where have you been. It's still the best song that Morrissey never wrote and it's still brilliant. The dates are: 13 Feb 2007 - RAW tempel, Berlin with the brilliant Gifthorse and the exciting German band La Manie .16 Feb 2007 - Enzian, Berlin with the od

The Girl With The Thorn In Her Name
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Tracey Thorn Goes SoloRight tonight a little pop quiz to check that you have been listening in school. Right you can turn your papers over now. Which band was Tracey Thorn the lead singer with? No copying off your neighbour. Got it yet? Top marks for those of you who answered Everything But The Girl . Those of you who have been paying attention in class may vaguely recall their electro dance track Missing, the swots amongst you may even recall that Tracey was the voice on Massive Attack's amazing Protection. Well news is slowly filtering out that Tracey, whose voice turns me to liquid, is about to release her first solo album since she quit the The Marine Girls and released A Distant Shore in 1982. The first single from the album is now available on iTunes in the US, and in the IK from iTunes, hmv and 7Digital. On the album Traceyhas joined up with a few different producers/collaborators including , Martin Wheeler (Vector Lovers), Alex Santos, Charles Webster and cagedbaby (Tom Gandey

The time approximately a little after 9:00pm, the date 25th January 2007, the place Lees Palace in Toronto, the band Jemo. Less than 12 hours before I was flying to Chicago and with packing still to be done I found myself in a Lees Palace with a chance to breathe in some genuine Toronto talent live and in the flesh. Although each band had little more than half an hour to impress the small but perfectly formed and attentive crowd, two in particular caught the Devil's attention. The first were...JemoGenre: Alternative / Acoustic / IndieFrom: Toronto, Ontario, CanadaJemo are lead by multi-instrumentalist, multi talented songwriter and all round nice guy, Jeff Dantowitz. Jeff leads the double life of a Marvel superhero. Mild mannered educator of young and impressionable minds by day, budding rock god by night. Sounds like a erfect plot for a future blockbuster. For about 15 seconds of the set I was toying with the idea of who would play Jeff, finally plumping for Jake Gyllenhaal, then I w

I'm currently holed up in my apartment in Toronto as it is just too bloody cold to venture to far out. It's minus 20 with the wind chill!! Any colder and I swear hell will freeze over. This devil likes it a lot warmer. At least we've got the music to keep us warm and today a bumber post of odds n sods and new bands that I'm sure you're gonna like.First up with some news are the aptly named...snowfight in the city centreThe Manchester based indie pop band with the fruity basslines and dangerous harmonies (their words not mine!) are headlining the Camden Barfly in London on 12th Feb. You can pre-order tickets for the gig by clicking here. This is one of three dates that they have at the Barfly in February followed by an extensive tour that takes in pretty much all corners of the UK (does the UK really have corners?). If you can't catch them in London then make sure you go along to see them on one of their other dates. I can see this band doing a Snow Patrol in the near future and g

Their Hearts Are Full Of Generosity

Their Hearts Are Full Of SpringGenre : Indie / Pop / AlternativeFrom: London and South East United KingdomRegular readers of the Devil's blog will know that I have a special place in my heart of this band. Now in addition to spreading their life affirming magical indie pop they have been hit be an unprecedented fit of generosity. The band have just recorded a new version of New Favourite Band with the full THWFOS line-up (Vicky and Alex weren't around when they made the demo, hence the lack of beautiful female voices on the version you can hear here on their myspace site now) so what better time to remind the world of how good the demo was? It's only available for a limited time so you better get your downloading skates on and hot foot it over to the Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring site to download yourself a little piece of heavenly postcardesque jangly crooning. If you like what you see then the band have an album out on another of the Devil's friends, Northern Star Records.Pur

Pretty Filth AddictionGenre: Rock / Industrial / ElectronicaFrom: U.S&EUROPE.London England/, Ohio United StatesThanks to my good friend the The Exhaulted Cuntaché of Hades_Miss Pink (I'm not convinced that this is the name that is printed on her birth certificate!) for alerting me to Pretty Filth Addiction. Miss Pink, who is related to the 1980s (although he'll probably say 90s and noughties!) pop idol Mike Score of Liverpool band A Flock Of Seagulls (I'll let you work out how they are related for yourself but there is a very good clue in the photo section of Miss Pink's myspace site - theres no prize for guessing it's just for fun!), is a good judge of Digital Hardcore Electro Industrial Freakery and she's onto a winner with Anjewel's PFA. Exit Clov

Exit ClovGenre: Indie / Pop / RockFrom : Washington DC United States Thanks to the excellent blogsite Instrumental Analysis for turning me onto Exit Clov , a five piece band from Washington DC fronted by twin sisters, Emily and Susan Hsu. The band, who's name is a tribute to Samuel Beckett's who have spent the last couple of years building up a fan base in Washington through their fantastic live show featuring the sparring harmonies of the two sisters and an Arcade Fire like blend of soft violin and keyboards. They have released a couple of singles and recently signed a deal with Livewire Recordings. They manage to combine beautiful melodies that are as contagious as bird flu with lyrics that tackles social and poilitical issues. Not an easy combination to pull off but Exit Clov do it with panache. They rail against societal idiocy, that same societal idiocy that turns Paris Hilton into a society, and proclaim themselves for revolution and ennui. They describe their sound as "Kaleido

The Lab Rats Climb Aboard The Devil's Train
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The Lab RatsGenre: Hip Hop / Rock / IndieFrom : Columbus, Ohio, United StatesI may be wrong but I believe that the Lab Rats are the first (Indie) Hip Hop band to appear on the Devil 's site. Brian Brown (could there be a less hip hop name than that?) and DJ KW (aah that's a little more like it) make genre-shifting music that throws in indie, rap, beats, grooves, keyboards, guitars, scratches, riffs, jams, feedback, sweat, laughs, beers, blues and truths without blinking an eyelid. These Rats stray far from the usual hip hop template incorporating jazz, funk, big beats, quirky samples and atmospheric soundscapes into their sound coming on like a 21st centuryDe La Soul, this is the new Daisy Age. The Lab Rat's sound is rooted in the reality of lower-middle class suburbia incorporating the acute observations of Mr Brown on life and the world he sees when he wakes up every morning. This is hip hop that makes you wanna stop and think, this is hip hop that engages the brain as much and the

The Sharp Tongues At The Smiling Buddha
1970-01-01 00:59:59
iThe Sharp Tongues Genre: Rock / Rock / RockFrom Toronto, Ontario CanadaEarlier this week I got an email from a band informing me of a gig at The Smiling Buddha in Toronto and asking me if I'd be interested in going along to check them out. Having an uneventful evening all mapped out I immediately said "yeah ok". Am I glad I did this band blew the Devil away completely. The Sharp Tongues is a new band comprised of the mulit-talented and utterly unforgettable Marcus Quin (The Silt ) and the unstoppable, completely captivating, incredibly alluring and talented, Julia Muth ( The Creeping Nobodies (featured on the Devil's site on 20th September 2006), The Piney Wolves and Celestino) on skin shredding guitar and icicle sharp vocals. Together they are a match made in heaven and, on the basis of this gig, one of the best, and most promising, new bands in Toronto at the moment. They were the final band on the night following the open-ended improvisational psych-rock band (think no-one you've

London's Calling
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls"There are just so many brilliant bands in London at the moment that I could turn this blog into a fanzine for London bands. Tonight a couple of bands that are currently rocking the Devil's world... Tortoise Shout!Genre: Indie / Alternative / Pop PunkFrom: London and South East United KingdomTortoise Shout! are a London based four piece who are veterans (I'm sure they won't like me saying that!) of the London scene. I'm told that they orginally formed in 1988, either there's been some mistake or they have managed to somehow reverse the ageing process, and that they have been off the scene for some time. Well whenever they were formed and however long they have been gone, they are back now with a new drummer and new material. They stormed back like long lost prodigal daughters with a well received gig at the Bar Academy and are about to release a double a-side single, "Shanti". With influences that range from The Smiths (these guys and g

Tonight the Devil has decided to turn tonoghts post into a recruitment fair for some of the most promising bands around at the moment, starting with...Past Mistress Genre: Indie / Experimental / GarageFrom: NYC, New York United States Past Mistress are looking for a new drummer. If you play the drums (apparently that is one of the key requirements!) and are a creative creature, open minded, have The Spirit and a love based personality, are very humble with no ego or temper or hard drug problems, prepared to tour, healthym responsible and fun and are looking for an exciting opportunity with an up and coming New York band then contact Past Mistress. Past Mistress have recently recorded at Tv On the Radio's Stay Gold studios in Brooklyn with Alan Labiner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs,TV On The Radio) producing and John Egnelo (Sonic Youth) mastering their album at the Magic Shop in NYC. The album will be out this June, so this could be your opportunity to get on the cover of what could be a multi pl

Bunny Rabbit

Bunny Rabbit Genre: Grime / RapFrom: Brooklyn, New York, United StatesThe Devil's tastes are expanding as he delves deeper into the world's musical underworld with Brooklyn's Bunny Rabbit conjuring up the first reference to grime on this site.Don't be put off by the cutesy cutesy name this is one Rabbit with razor sharp teeth and the attitude of a viking warrior on a nudist beach. This Bunny is fed on raw meat and is heading right for your jugular. Celena Glenn (Black Cracker), who has toured with CocoRosie as their beatboxer, is the beatmaster general whilst Melisa Rincon (Bunny Rabbit) provides the poisoned candy rhymes that bite. "Saddle Up" is about the clever, sharp sexual ennui that is the stuff of dreams but is rarely seen in real life. "Lucky Bunny Foot" is the stand out track with its hallucinogenic beats and an undercurrent of barely restrained tension as Bunny Rabbit tries to restrain herself from punching the lights out of someone who's trodden on her foot whilst Black

Division Day
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Division DayGenre: Indie Pop / ShoegazeFrom: Los Angeles, California, United StatesIn the summer of 2001, Division Day moved into a house in the Santa Cruz woods without ever having played a note together as a foursome. They turned the master bedroom into a makeshift recording studio that would see the birth of their first EP. Featuring Rohner Segnitz (vocals, keyboards), Ryan Wilson (guitar), Seb Bailey (bass, guitar, vocals), and Kevin Lenhart (drums), Division Day swings freely between precise arrangement and reckless abandon, crafting spirited, infectious anthems of loss and heartache that, like deja vu all over again, sound familiar the first time you hear them and leave you grasping for comparisons. Match the lyrical darkness of a more imagistic Leonard Cohen with the furious drumming of Brendan Canty (Fugazi), the elegant basslines of John Stirratt (Wilco), and the supple, atmospheric guitar shards of Nick McCabe (The Verve), and you might come close to approximating the band'

Shoegazing - Airiel
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Let's all indulge in a spot of shoegazing AirielGenre: Shoegaze / Experimental / AmbientFrom: Chicago, Illinois, United StatesThe Devil has it on good authority that this is a true story. On January 15th, 1919, a huge storage tank of molasses ruptured and sent 2.3 million gallons of the stuff rushing through downtown Boston at 35 miles per hour. If you don't believe me click here. Imagine walking along, minding your own business, and being violently swept up in a wave of beautiful sweetness, enveloping you, tumbling your body end over end until you were dizzy from the motion. Well that sums up how the Devil felt when he first heard Airiel. They are not a new band having been formed in 1997 by Jeremy Wren as a solo project in his bedroom with only his drum machines for company but fashion could just catch them up with Shoegazing long overdue a revival. Combining the starry eyed, dreamy melodic janglings of Ride with the vivid experiments in sonic energy of My Bloody Valentine, Airiel

The Devil is on his travels again, off to Denver for a couple of days, and therefore there may be a slight lull in postings. So, as a special going away treat a bumper harvest of odds, sods and nice to haves starting with ...Little Man TateGenre: Indie / RockFrom: Yorkshire, United KingdomThey have been described by Mojo as the new Arctic Monkeys, are they having a laugh or what? Little Man Tate eschew (saw that word in a book I read in a bookshop and have been waiting for a chance to use it!) such comparison with their fellow tykes. Ok there is liberal use of a northern accent (what do you expect they're from Yorkshire and people in Yorkshire have Yorkshire accents!) and a lyrical obsession with ordinary life in a hum drum town, but LMT could equally be called the new Pulp, Blur, Jam or even Smiths. They have amassed a sizeable, fanatical following and have scraped the lower fringes of the British charts with their last single ‘House party at Boothys’ so this is a band circling

Back home in dear old blighty.Well after an incident packed journey the Devil, and his luggage, made it back home. With a complete breakdown of the computer system at Toronto airport, delays at Heathrow while another plane was towed away to allow us to disembark (why is it only planes and boats that you disembark from? Can you disembark from a bus or a car?), delays on the train from Terminal 4 to Terminal 1 (why do they call them terminals at airports, it doesn't inspire confidence!), it was as if someone somewhere didn't want the Devil to get back! Mansun, Gone But Not Forgotten
2007-03-12 20:12:00
I'm on leave this week so have some more time to search for great stuff that deserves to be seen and heard. Today news of some downloads and a few MP3s from the late, great and sorely missed Mansun. For anyone searching for the 50ft Wave downloads they will be on the site tomorrow, this Devil likes to tease.MansunGenre: Rock / Alternative / PopFrom: The Past, United Kingdom For those of you unfamiliar with Mansun they were one of the most innovative and enduring bands of the britpop era. Good though Blur eventually became they never released anything that compares with the creativity and originality of Mansun's sprawling, epic debut album, 'Attack Of The Grey Lantern'. To this Devil they are still the missing link between Blur and Oasis managing to combine the best of both Britpop bands with the wit and originality of the The Smiths. Kristin Hersh & 50 Foot Wave
2007-03-14 00:35:00
50 Foot WaveGenre: Grunge/ Punk/ Alternative / RockFrom : Los Angeles, California, United StatesKristin Hersh is, quite simply, a goddess, an idol, the Magna Mater. Since her departure from the much missed Throwing Muses she has produced some excellent solo albums and, in 2003, she launched 50 Foot Wave as the vehicle for her angular, anguished, mercurial songs. 50 Foot Wave takes the exquisite control that was a feature of Throwing Muses and infuses it with an energetic urgency and intensity. Hersh's trademark hypnotic sonic assault and explosive, almost carnal vocals make a welcome appearance. The savage, bone breaking guitar, ferocious drumming and impassioned vocals ranging from the softly melodic to ferine screaming render this the true legacy of Nirvana. This is the music that Kurt Cobain would be making if he were still alive today. This is art grunge/rock the way it was always supposed to be, intense, volatile, aggressive, but hauntingly melodic and emotional. After showing h

Tanya DonellyGenre: Indie / Rock / Pop From: Massachusetts, United StatesFirst Kristin Hersh and now Tanya Donelly, this weeks blog is turning into a Throwing Muses reunion. As a member of no less than four of the finest bands of the 80s and the 90s, Throwing Muses , Belly, The Breeders and This Mortal Coil (check out her duet with Kim Deal on This Mortal Coils 'You And Your Sister' which you can listen to at the This Mortal Coil Myspace site) Tanya can lay claim to being the indie queen of the 1990s. Although her solo career, following a five year hiatus to spend time with her young family, has not yet repeated her former glories, she remains a brilliant songwriter and her voice has lost none of its crystalline perfection. Her last album, 'This Hungry Life' was released last year and is only available from her website until, 1st April. Dirtblonde Polemic

I want nothing this societys got. Im going underground. In a slight departure from the norm tonights post is dedicated to a debate started by a Liverpool band called Dirtblonde who featured on the Devil's site last year. Earlier this week Ivan from Dirtblonde issued a bulletin on Myspace that made me think, which is more than most Myspace bulletins do. In a world where the NME claims that Lily Allen is indie we need bands with intelligence and integrity, like Dirtblonde, more than ever. I'm posting the full bulletin unedited for you to make your own mind up. All I say is read it, digest it, send it on to your friends just don't ignore it, and, if you agree, email Dirtblonde and tell them that they are not alone... Yeah! We're going underground, out of Myspace and into the dark. Pretty soon we'll delete our Myspace account. If everyone else is on Myspace, if every band is on Myspace, then it's enough reason for us NOT to be there. Stopping following stupid trends like sheep. The Two Koreas

The Two KoreasGenre: Indie / Garage / RockFrom: Toronto, Ontario, Canada When the annoying Lily Allen and the atrocious Amy Whinehouse are deemed to be indie (apparently because they have attitude, well so did Margaret bleeding Thatcher!), it's refreshing to unearth an "old school" indie band. When the indie world is full of posing, ego driven stadium rock wannabes it's refreshing to uncover a band that don't take themselves too seriously, a band that manages to poke a little fun at the music business without degenerating into humourless parody. In summary it's refreshing to find a band like The Two Koreas. The band, which formed almost four years ago, are comprised of Stuart Berman (vocals), Kieran Grant (guitar), Jason Anderson (farfisa), David Gee (drums) and, Ian Worang (bass) most of whom met whilst working as music critics for Eye Weekly, Canada's largest urban weekly paper (which I guess makes them a critics band - poor pun intended!! or alternatively that they each have t
