The Battle of Helm's Deep, Candy-fied 2007-01-14 06:37:40
I love candy, and I’m a big fan of all things Tolkien, so this project made me giddy with delight. It’s the climactic scene of The Two Towers, where Men defend the bastion of Helm’s Deep from horde after horde of invading Orcs. Missed Manners (with the help of a bunch of family and friends) recreated the whole battle in candy. I don’t quite know why, but do awesome ideas like this ever need a reason? It’s Tolkien! And candy! It’s both!
Gummi bears and Sour Patch Kids represent the bodies, Tootsie Pops represent the siege equipment, and Jolly Ranchers were stacked up to portray the walls. That one representative picture above doesn’t do justice to the entire sugary diorama. You’ve got to check out all the photos for yourself.
The Battle
of Minas Tirith is on tap next. I cannot wait. Now I feel completely inadequate as a Lord of the Rings geek. What can one recreate with half a bag of Starbursts?

Retro Candy Flashback: Dweebs 2007-01-12 07:38:58
As I was cleaning out my closet the other day, I came across a candy I had totally forgotten about - Dweebs. I found a sealed (yes, unopened and still sealed) box of Dweebs in my closet! Billed as the “Cousins of Nerds”, Dweebs were also made by Willy Wonka, just as Nerds still are.
Dweebs are both larger and more round than Nerds though. In fact, they look almost exactly like the 6mm Airsoft BBs (any other guys remember those?) that go into air pistols, right down to the bright colors. But instead of the hard consistency of Nerds, they’re soft and chewy.
Coming in a 3 flavor pack, Orange, Strawberry, and Punch, the 1.65 oz box had 3 separate (and closeable!) compartments to keep each of your flavors separate. Brad Kent also has a Dweebs package with Cherry listed so we know that Dweebs came in at least four different flavors.
My package has a copyright date of 1990, which means they’re 17 years old at this point, and I more than likely bought them from the ge Read more:Candy
Candy Review: Bija Omega White Chocolate Truffles 2007-01-11 08:00:39
While in my local health food store I recently spied some new chocolate in the refrigerated section. There, next to the soy salami (that makes perfect sense, right?) sat three types of organic truffles. Bija are organic chocolate truffles proudly boasting that each package (containing 4 truffles) has 6g Omega
3 and 3g Omega6 fatty acids. Ahhh, I see a “health” chocolate here!
There’s three flavors in all: Milk Chocolate
with hazelnut filling, 70% Dark Chocolate and White
Chocolate with maple filling. Being a dedicated chocoholic I decided to go for the most non conventional of the three: the White Chocolate. I figured if Bija does their white chocolate well, the others should be delicious too. The truffles are large, each about 16g and 1 1/2 inches long and 1 inch wide and feel quite heavy in your hand. The back of the package claims the ratio of the two omega fat types (2:1) to be “ideal”. The chocolate is made from Peruvian cocoa butter and Madagascar va Read more:Candy

Candy Shot Glasses 2007-01-10 09:20:41
Today from that great purveyor of oh-so-useful goods in bulk, Oriental Trading, comes something for the alcoholic Candy
Addict in all of us - shot glasses made out of fruit flavored candy!
I can’t help but imagine the hideous, sticky mess that could result from overindulging with these, but I guess that might just add to the fun of a drunken evening. Personally, I don’t drink, but I wouldn’t mind trying a pina colada (virgin, of course) in a banana flavored glass. Then again, I guess pina coladas aren’t typically served in shot glasses… oh, leave me alone! I told you I don’t drink. Sheesh.
Anyway, if you do happen to be the type to occasionally imbibe, at $4.95 for a pack of six you can’t really lose out here (and they’re fat-free!). Just remember - don’t lick the bottom and set it down. Bad bad things could happen. In fact, you may just want to make a rule that these are outside toys; that way, if things get out of hand, the ants Read more:Glasses
Candy Review: Vosges Chocolate Bars 2007-01-10 08:10:58
I don’t know who started this whole “combine salt with chocolate or other candy” craze, but I wholeheartedly support it! I am not a salt freak by any means, but the judicious sprinkling of salt on caramels, in chocolate, or other candies is really yummy. That’s why I pounced on the Vosges Barcelona Bar when I saw it at Cost Plus World Market. (Cost Plus has a really great selection of sweets, in case you didn’t know).
Chicago-based Vosges makes chocolates flavored with an assortment of spices and exotic ingredients. Their Barcelona Bar is a dark milk chocolate (41 percent cacao) with hickory-smoked almonds and grey sea salt. Yowza! The salt is not overpowering–it tickles the roof of your mouth and alerts your taste buds to pay attention. The chocolate is smooth, but the main flavoring in this bar is the almonds. They don’t skimp on the almonds in this bar at all. Every bite is filled with the crunch of almonds.
I really enjoyed the bar, but Read more:Candy

Candy Review: SweetRiot - Flavor 70 Cinn 2007-01-09 09:00:14
A year ago (to the day) I reviewed the 3 varieties of SweetRiot’s Cacao Nibs. At the time, they had 3 varieties - flavor 50, flavor 65, and flavor 70 - each reflecting the cacao percentage in the chocolate coating (and if you’re not sure what a nib is, read the previous review to get up to speed). Now they have come out with a new flavor - it’s the flavor 70 variety but this time they have added cinnamon to the mix. SweetRiot describes them thusly: “cacao nibs, lightly roasted, covered in 70% dark chocolate with just a hint of cinnamon to tickle your tongue”.
I rated the original SweetRiot very highly and even awarded it the Candy
Addict Awesomely Addictive Award. So, you would think that adding some cinnamon to the mix wouldn’t do any harm and just might make it even better. Not so. The cinnamon changes the flavor radically - for the worse. It’s hard to describe, but it just doesn’t taste right. I eat a few and really have no desire for Read more:Flavor
Smurfs Gum: How Smurfy! 2007-01-09 08:25:28
Candy companies must have taken Gargamel’s idea of eating Smurfs
a little too literally when they released their versions “Smurf Bubble Gum”. Thankfully, you aren’t actually chewing Smurfs. Imagine how traumatizing that would be for fans of the show! The gum was produced back during the Smurfs’ peak of popularity in the early 1980’s. I know the Smurfs are still extremely popular in Europe and I wonder if Smurf gum is still being made today.
There are 6 different types of gum in the gallery over at Bluebuddies, a Smurf fanpage. Topps made a gum assortment of blue and white lumpy pieces called “Smurf Rocks” as well as two different sets of Smurf trading cards that each came with a stick of Smurf gum. The “Smurf Rocks” came in 4 wrapper styles featuring the Smurf characters and holding about 1.3 ounces of gum. The other types are a Bazooka-eque gum coming from Turkey that included stickers, a
Special K and Life Cereals Go Chocolate! 2007-01-08 10:00:43
When I think of Special
K cereal, I don’t normally imagine chocolate with it, but that’s about to change. As chocolate (particularly the antioxidant-rich dark variety of chocolate) gets touted as a health food, cereal companies are starting to hop onto a cacao-covered bandwagon.
According to an article in USA Today, Kellogg and Quaker are going to push chocolate varieties of Special K and Life cereals: Special K Chocolate
y Delight and Life Chocolate Oat Crunch. Apparently, these aren’t truly “breakfast” cereals as the companies are encouraging folks to indulge in something they’ve already been doing: late-night snacking on sweets.
We already have a wide variety of chocolate cereals, but up until now, they’ve all been marketed for kids. My take? I’d still prefer curling up with a bowl of Cocoa Pebbles than a bowl of Special K, even if it is chocolatey Special K.

Candy Review: Caffe Acapella Coffee Bars 2007-01-08 09:16:25
I’m one of those weird people who loves the taste of coffee but don’t really drink the stuff. I’ve never understood the wonderful alchemy, that captivating mixture of sweet and bitter, which constitutes the perfect cup of coffee. I gleefully eat coffee-flavored hard candies and I’m often compelled to wander into a Starbucks to order a Frappuccino.
So I come into this review with an eager palate. Caffe Acapella
claims to have created the first “coffee bar,” a tantalizing mingling of coffee and chocolate wrapped into a gourmet candy bar. They were kind enough to send over a gift set of their products to us for this review.
The first thing I noticed about all the varieties was the smell, tantalizingly rich and a little bitter. It was like walking past a coffee place, but without the dozens of people waiting in line for their morning caffeine fix. Here’s a breakdown of the four flavors offered by Caffe Acapella, along with my impressions of each Read more:Candy

Candy Review: Grape and Apple Decorer Pocky 2007-01-15 18:33:45 Pocky
, for those of you who are unfamiliar, is one of the most popular candies in Japan. It’s basically a long thin biscuit stick that has a flavored frosting coating covering one end. In the past decade it has been increasing in popularity in the US. Many varieties and flavors exist with chocolate being the standard. The name “Pocky” references the the “poc” sound the candy makes when you bite it. Pretty neat huh?
“Just like a decoration cake on a stick!” chirps the label on the packet. The Decorer Pocky is the biggest and thickest of all the Pocky, mainly due to two layers of frosted coating on the biscuit stick. The top layer is very artfully applied and it does look like cake frosting in a very removed way. Each packet inside the box contains 4 packets of only 3 sticks (unlike the other types of Pocky which give you 4 or more per packet) and is a little deceiving in terms of satisfaction. They’re more satisfying than they seem! I lik Read more:Apple

Candy Review: Hershey's Special Dark Coffee Kisses 2007-01-17 10:01:59
What’s not to love about a Hershey
’s Kiss? It’s such a perfect little morsel of chocolatey goodness. I’d have to say the only problem I have with them is having enough patience to methodically unwrap each of the little guys when I am just anxious to shove a whole handful into my mouth. Well, I guess I’m burning half a calorie unwrapping, right?
Hershey’s has been coming out with a lot of limited edition flavors of Kisses
lately like the Candy
Addict favorite Cherry Cordial Kisses, Special
Dark Strawberry Kisses, and even Candy Cane Kisses. Recently, I was lucky enough to find Hershey’s Special Dark Coffee
Kisses. I love coffee, and I love coffee-flavored chocolate, so I had high hopes for these nuggets!
I think my hopes were a little too high. These Kisses aren’t bad, but they aren’t all that great, either. I’ve had the same bag for several weeks now, which is telling–if I really liked them, they would have been gone i
Jelly Belly Lollibeans Pops 2007-01-17 09:00:42
Recently, Jelly
Belly introduced a confection that I’ve been dying to try. Their Lollibeans Pops are lollipops (just in case the name didn’t give it away) shaped like their famous jellybeans and coming in a few of the same flavors.
Among those that I’d love to try are watermelon, grape, and root beer, all of which are some of my favorite jellybean flavors. I’m disappointed they don’t have juicy pear, my all-time favorite, but I guess it would be a difficult texture to replicate in a hard candy.
Unfortunately, they’re only available to “specialty retailers,” or in 96 count cases, which just isn’t going to happen. As much as I would love having boxes of lollipops taking up floor space in my apartment, I think I’d rather find another way to keep the mice happy.

Flaming Gummi Bear 2007-01-18 09:00:02
Have you ever wondered just what exactly would happen to a gummy bear if you added it to a test tube containing heated potassium chlorate? I know I’ve been dying to know.
What, you don’t believe me? Ok, ok, you caught me. The truth is, I had no idea what the hell this was all about. Turns out, there’s a high school chemistry demonstration that shows how the sugars in a gummy bear interact with liquefied potassium chlorate to create a really cool flame-y jet looking thing.
I’m the first to admit that I’m not exactly a math and science type person. However, I’m fairly sure I would have remembered an experiment like this in either my high school or college classes, if only due to the scary fire it produces. I’m generally not a big fan of fire, but watching it online isn’t too bad!
Above you see a video of this chemical reaction using a gummi bear (poor bear!). Who’d have thought one little gummi bear could produce that much fire? Jus Read more:Gummi
Friday Fun: The Great Flying Mintini 2007-01-19 09:00:21
Altoids has a great website despite it being almost all Flash (which I hate for navigation). In their Flash game “The GreatFlying
Mintini” you must control the angle and power of Mintini being shot out of a cannon. Try to grab Altoids tins while flying through the air and you MUST land in the marked landing area.
It’s tricky but very fun. Above you see my score the first time I tried it and didn’t know what I was doing. See if you can beat it!

Gummi Chick -N- Legs Candy 2007-01-19 08:18:14
When I heard about Gummi
Chick -N- Legs Candy
, I imagined grossness along the lines of the Gummi Chicken Feet we covered last year, but the picture took my breath away. It's disgusting. Truth be told, I can't stand real fried chicken, but this candy just looks nasty.
For 99 cents, you can get a marshmallow and plastic replica of a chicken drumstick. The marshmallow is sprinkled with sugar, and each leg comes individually wrapped in packaging that says "Looks like chicken…but tastes like delicious orange and cream gummi" Perhaps stranger is the idea, also billed on the packaging, that the plastic bones are collectible. Then again, I suppose anything is collectible if someone wants it to be, but those bones won't be joining my PEZ dispensers anytime soon.

Create a Custom M&M Character 2007-01-22 03:11:01
I’m always interested to see how candy companies find ways to promote their products. Usually they come in the form of contests, toys or games, with the latter being my personal preference. It’s more fun to play a game than it is to hope for the slight chance of winning some vacation, electronic, or a lifetime supply of the product.
That being said, M&M’s just released a new section of their webpage that allows you to create your own personal M&M! What a great idea! Once you start you’ll be faced with such important decisions as your type (plain, peanut or almond) and color, but also eyes, shoes, hair, accessories, etc. There’s also a plethora of activities for your personal M&M character once its been created. Just be sure to create an account or log in before you start so you can save your M&M alias. Otherwise you may lose all your hard work!

Eye Candy: Clever Candy Crafts 2007-01-22 09:11:09
Recently, we mentioned a candy diorama of the Battle of Helm’s Deep from Lord of the Rings, made entirely of candy. Although the edibility of that craft project is somewhat questionable, I’m pretty sure you could eat the creations from Eye Candy
. After all, the candy is all still wrapped in their original packaging.
From $14 “shoes” made of candy buttons, Starbursts, and Laffy Taffy, to custom candy creations that could potentially cost hundreds of dollars, Eye Candy
has taken candy art to new heights. There are dolls with candy-lined dresses, so that even after the candy is all gone, girls still have something to enjoy, and a taffy-lined doghouse with a plush puppy is sure to please.
My personal favorites are the houses, like the one shown above. Although I’m a fan of gingerbread houses, I never found them too appetizing, particularly after the house has served as a centerpiece for a few weeks and you’re faced with stale cookies and hard frosting. Read more:Clever

Licorice Candy Review: Kokindjes, Sweet Finnish Licorice, and Kookaburra Allsorts 2007-01-22 08:00:19
Kokindjes
My reason to live arrived a few days ago. No, I didn’t find a boyfriend; my Licorice
of the Month Club selections arrived! By now, you all know how much I love my monthly licorice delivery. This month we got SweetFinnish
Licorice, Kokindjes from Holland, and Kookaburra Allsorts from Australia as a bonus.
I tried the Kokindjes first, not sure if I would like them. I was worried they would be some hideous, unsweetened thing, but in fact they were very good. They are the size of small gumdrops, and are very soft. Their flavor is interesting, as it is both salty and sweet at the same time. They are certainly a departure from typical American licorice flavor, but they were still really good.
Sweet Finnish Licorice
Next up was the Sweet Finnish Licorice. These were short lengths of solid tubular licorice. They were a bit harder than I prefer; with a rather weak jaw, they were kind of hard to chew. Still, they were a nice flavor, with mild sweetness but plenty of licorice Read more:Candy

Candy Review: Whole Foods: "Whole Treat" Pates de Fruits 2007-01-24 09:00:23
One of the lucky Christmas candy gifts bestowed upon me (they know me too well!) was a beautiful box of fruit pate from WholeFoods
. I’ve never had fruit pate/jellies before, but I have eyed them many times before on the shelf at the local gourmet store.
Fruit pate are of French origin (hence the name, which means “jelly”) and are made of real fruit which are then lightly dusted with cane sugar. Essentially a nice simple candy that combines two great ingredients and is just bursting with flavor.
This set of pate comes in 6 flavors: black currant, mandarin, apple, quince, passion fruit and raspberry. I had a hard time deciding which to try first but I finally decided on the black currant and mandarin. I was rewarded with an explosion of flavor in my mouth. Wow. It may sound crazy, but these little sugar coated gems are so flavorful that they rival the fruit they’re made from! Texture and shape aside, I was really eating a bushel of mandarin oranges. Good Karmal: Candy on the Road to Enlightenment 2007-01-26 09:00:06
Could candy serve as a positive force in the world? Sure, why not? One look at the website for Good Karmal shows a candy company different from the rest. Instead of flashy graphics designed to grab your attention, the site opts for the serene and the simple. Oh, and they only sell one product: caramel, but not just any caramel. Theirs is hand-made and individually wrapped with an inspirational quote. Not only that, but they donate 10% of sales to environmental charities like the National Arbor Day Foundation and The Nature Conservancy.
These candies are apparently popular among the celebrity elite, and even made the list of Oprah’s Favorite Things. Pretty high marks for something that tickles the sweet tooth. Befitting their gourmet status, Good Karmal’s caramels aren’t cheap: nine pieces costs $22.50. But they’re packed in an elaborate, woven keepsake box, and a portion of that money does go to charity.

Candy Review:Meiji Best 3 Chocolate Bars 2007-01-26 08:05:51 Chocolate
is well loved and heartily consumed in Japan, and Meiji
is probably the top-selling chocolate brand. According to Mari on the Japanese lifestyle blog Watashi to Tokyo, Meiji manufactures six of the top ten best-selling chocolate bars in Japan (data from Nikkei). The number one spot went to Meiji Milk Chocolate, and Meiji’s Black Chocolate and Hi Milk Chocolate came in fourth and eighth, respectively. These are the three flavors included in the Meiji Best 3 variety pack I picked up at a local Asian market.
Now, while I love Japanese chocolate bars, I also don’t think it is of very high quality. It has a distinct flavor, and it seems to have a lot of fillers. Japanese chocolate is just not, well, very chocolatey. The flavor generally is much more subtle. I found this to be the case with the Meiji Best 3. All three of the bars were on the hard, snappy side (as opposed to, say, Hershey’s Chocolate Bars, which I believe is the U.S. equivalent to the Meiji bars a Read more:Candy
Catch a Candy Virus 2007-01-26 03:33:31
Have you caught this season's winter cold yet? Personally, I'm working on my second, but if you're feeling short on viruses, you can order a flavored batch of Candy
Virus. The boxes come in three varieties—The Cure (grape); The Epidemic (apple); and The Virus (strawberry). All three are advertised as "tangy pebbles" and come in clever shapes like skulls, a cartoon virus character, and stuff that looks like it would be found on the microscope slide of a very ill person.
I'm not grossed out by Candy Virus, but I am intrigued as to what made someone decide to manufacture such a product. Then again, when you compare the viruses to our Top 10 Grossest Candies, those little boxes of sickness seem light-hearted and even pleasant.
