I'm So Behind
2008-03-12 22:22:00
Just wanted to update that we're not dead. Just still feeling pretty run down from this latest bout of sickness. Plus working while sick...and being the Mom while sick...and we're expecting company this weekend. And about 50 million other things.I shall return. You've been warned.

Can You Hear Me Now?
2008-03-14 01:25:00
Dear Mr. Customer At The Bookstore Today,I just wanted to thank you so much for the live entertainment you gave me, my co-workers, and the whole store today. I must say, if I had only known what a treat I was in for as I readied myself for work this morning I would have packed a pair of Depends for this momentous occasion.I know you were just making a joyful noise, and that's totally cool with me AND the Lord. And you certainly were loud. Real loud. But Sir, if I may be candid, I think you should know something. It wasn't the fact that you were singing so loudly everyone was cracking up. It wasn't even the fact that your singing was, how shall I put this....probably something best left for the privacy of your own home. And I mean that in the sincerest Christian way possible, really I

Day 3...In Which My Son Turns Redneck
2008-03-17 22:04:00
Well, it's Day 3 of Cracked Daddy's 3 week vacation and EB is turning into White Trash Baby. OK, so I'm exaggerating a bit, but when your 3 year old suddenly develops a hankering to play "Monsta Twucks" on the Playstation 2 and knows the chorus to "Bad to the Bone", I think that's cause for concern. All I can say is if I so much as hear a "Get "Er Done!!!" from my child's lips I will catch a case of the vapors and Cracked Daddy will be sent packing back to work.Amen.

The Hostess With The Mostess!
2008-03-16 19:32:00
It finally happened. I got to play Happy Hostess this weekend to a friend of Cracked Daddy's and Friend's Finacee. I cleaned like a mad woman Thursday night and Friday morning. I made sure the towels were all washed up...plenty of toilet paper in the bathroom.....everything in tip top shape. They arrived (along with Cracked Daddy who caught a ride home with them) Friday afternoon.I prepared Hidden Valley Potatoes to go with the marvelous steaks Cracked Daddy grilled. I also whipped up some homemade buttermilk ranch salad dressing. I pulled out all the stops, y'all. And I was nervous as heck because although I knew Friend, I had never met Fiancee and was scared she would be critiquing my homemaking and cooking skills. Don't we all worry about that stuff?Fiancee turned out to be just

No title

I lost one of my dearest internet friends yesterday. Her name was Jackie and she and I "met" in 2001 on an internet message board we both happened to join. Jackie was old enough to be my mother, but we bonded and she was such a huge support and inspiration to me.Jackie was diagnosed with lung cancer and even then she still remained upbeat, positive, and always putting others first. Always. Jackie and I would chat late at night. We were both night owls. She was such a huge support to me when I was pregnant with EB and scared of the pregnancy resulting in a bad outcome. She lifted me up constantly.Although I never had the chance to meet Jackie in person, I'm feeling her loss as if I spent every day with her, and I guess in some ways I did, even though it was through a computer. And w

Crazy for Crayo Craze
2008-03-21 22:19:00
Remember when I posted about our disaster with That Well Known Crayon Company's Color Wonder Finger Paint from Hell? Well, we found an awesome alternative to that, thankyouverymuch! It's not finger paint, but Crayo Craze from Luqui-Mark is THE neatest thing. EB loves it, but I'm guessing children of all ages would find this useful and enjoy using it. Imagine 6 colors right at your fingertips....without having to use 6 different crayons. The best part? I don't have to pick up a whole box of crayons when EB slings them on the floor.

I Didn't Tell You Last Week
2008-03-20 22:52:00
But, like, 2 Saturdays ago...we got snow! Yes! In Mississippi! In March, people! It was EB's first time to see snow, and he stomped around in his frog boots out in that snow until I had to physically remove him from it, kicking and screaming the entire time. And it snowed it's rumpshaker off, at least for where we live.

Sort of Like Blogs I Heart
2008-03-23 00:36:00
So instead of me making a list of some of my favorite blogs I've run across recently, let's flip things around, shall we?Today, leave me a comment telling me THE ONE blog you would read everyday for the rest of your life if you could only choose ONE. I know it's tough to choose just one, but what blog excites you....what blog can you not wait for an update on? I feel like I'm probably missing out on some great blogs just because I don't know about them.So share!

This Presidential Thing
2008-03-24 19:33:00
I remember my very first dealings with a presidential election. I was 6 years old, in first grade, and Carter and Reagan were running against each other. I had no clue what an election was until the 6th grade at my school held "mock elections" and came to each class to give a speech for each candidate. I immediately went home with questions and from then on always somehow managed to catch bits and pieces of political conversations my dad would have over coffee with my great aunts each week. My dad is a political nut. Let's just say the television at my parent's home is tuned to Fox News 24/7 with an occasional AMC movie thrown in.So now it's 2008. I'm no longer a six year old. I have a degree in Political Science and like to think I am somewhat educated on the candidates this time ar

Bragging On My Kid
2008-03-28 21:56:00
I think I just taught EB one of the most useful skills yet. He's sitting behind me here in bed (because he thinks I'm going to let him watch Thomas the Train on You Tube) and I just taught him how to scratch my back.If I could just get this kid to learn the fine art of a pedicure, he would so be Harvard material.Small eye update: Back to the doctor for an oral antibiotic and a shot to push out some fluid build-up in the ears and nose area. Still one-eyed.

Kitty Don't Play, Y'all!
2008-04-02 23:43:00
OK. Warning! The video below contains hunting. I'll just flat out tell you a man on safari kills this lion in this video. But y'all! OMG. I caught this on TV this afternoon and could NOT believe what the lion did before he met his demise. It's just absolutely shocking. But not gross, I promise....just an OMG moment. A "Holy crap that was TOO close!" moment. And it's just a wonder the hunters didn't shoot one of their own in the process.

Decorating Show Junkies Apply Within!

Y'all, I need some serious help. Actually, my kitchen needs the help, but I probably do, too. Annnnywayyyy....OK, so the picture below is our kitchen right before we moved in, that's why it looks so bare and has no refrigerator. It's been exactly a year since we moved in and we've yet to make the necessary improvements I want, but that's about to change. Only, I am so hopeless when it comes to color schemes and paint and all that stuff. That's where YOU come in. I need ideas...opinions....or just someone to say, "Bless your heart that's the fugliest kitchen I've ever seen". The only changes we made after moving in was purchasing a new refrigerator and a new stove that has a smooth top range. I heart me some smooth top ranges...so easy to clean. So that fugly stove in the picture i

You Need these Books
2008-04-01 21:32:00
OK, so I told y'all working in the Christian bookstore was going to be hard on my wallet. *sigh*But I did want to tell you about these two books. If you're a mommy who tries to do it all...work, take care of the kids, keep the husband happy, various duties in the church, etc. etc. then you NEED these books. I was skeptical of Christian fiction at first. I really was. I'm more of a non-fiction/Christian Living reader. But I was stocking the Christian Fiction shelves one day and this book caught my eye...and the description on the back was interesting, so I bought it. And I'm so glad I did. These two books, The Secret Life of Becky Miller and Renovating Becky Miller are, hands down, the best books I've read so far this year.Becky Miller is a character I could really relate to. She's tryi

As if you couldn't ignore the 90 million eggs on the background of my new blog design!Y'all. I am so thrilled with this new blog makeover I got from See My Designs by Shauna!!! If you've been reading here for some time, you know I've changed my blog layout many, many times. I just couldn't ever get it perfect the way I wanted it. But now I'm in total love. And Shauna was a breeze to work with. And super fast. Which is great for impatient little 3 err...33...year olds like moi who want everything yesterday. And prices? Shauna can't be beat, seriously. I've seen blog makeovers of this sort go for upwards of many, many dollars, but Shauna is super reasonable. Just check out her site and see what I mean. If you're in the market for a new blog makeover this spring, give Shauna a try

Just A Little OCD
2008-03-30 18:30:00
Well, today is Day 2 of "PRAISE JESUS I CAN SEE AGAIN!!!", and I don't know if it's sad or ridiculous that the very first thing I did after not being able to see anything for a week was to start cleaning. Cracked Daddy did a good job of keeping house while I was down for the count, but once I was able to put my contacts in I became a woman possessed. I cleaned out EB's closet and the linen closet. Every room except one in our home has been dusted and after that all that is left is the floors, which I will finish up tomorrow.I'm crazy, right?

Do you ever go blog hopping and just wish you had THAT blog....The blog that's full of excellent photography. The blog that makes absolutely NO sense...but everyone wants to read it.The blog that has post after post of warm fuzzy, heartfelt writing. The blog where you live on a farm, in a fabulously modern farm house and make everything from scratch and homeschool all 22 of your children. The blog where you have amazing stuff to give away ALL the time. The blog where you're an expert writer on something...and everyone wants to be that expert, too.The blog that rakes in $17,000 a month from affiliate sales. The blog that finds all the cutest, most ridiculously priced "stuff" to blog about. And what do you get from reading mine? You get eggs. Lots of eggs. That's what.

All About Poking The Babies
2008-04-04 13:28:00
By now I'm sure most of you have seen the clip of Jenny McCarthy telling off a panel of experts on vaccines. I won't link to it here because Jenny says a not so nice word to one of the men, but I did want to talk about our experience with vaccines so far. When I had EB I belonged to an online community of parents and two of my friends there had children right around the same time EB was born. Those two babies were boys and they were vaccinated on schedule. They were a few months older than EB, but close enough in age. Right around the time they hit the 18 month mark and started receiving the MMR vaccine they became completely different children. To date, they have both received a diagnosis of autism. I've watched as their parents have tirelessly fought for therapies and basic education

He's Not Fooling Me
2008-04-04 00:16:00
Yesterday EB did a bad thing at daycare. He spit on another child. I know. I was mortified. I have never seen him do this at home and don't know where in the world he picked this up. A friend of mine who is a teacher there assured me this wasn't anything we did as parents...they see other kids do these things...blah, blah, blah. But still. EB was given a time out and was good for the rest of his time there. So when I picked him up and we got home I asked him about it. It went a little something like this:Me: "EB, Mommy heard what you did at school. We don't act ugly to our friends. It makes me very sad." EB: "I....wuv...you." (Followed by lots of hugs and kisses)Me: "I love you, too, but we can't spit on people. It's naughty."EB: "Tom and Jewwy? Trains? I wanna color." Mor

How We Spent Saturday
2008-04-05 20:20:00
We golfed...And we stopped and checked out the flowers. And Mommy had to make the weekly trip to Wal-Mart, wherein she went by the clothing department on the way to the pet food aisle and someone had passed the most obscene gas she had ever smelled in her life, but we won't ruin a nice Saturday post dwelling on that.

It's A Small World After All
2008-04-08 21:20:00
OK, not that I have that song stuck in your head...So when I first started working at my aunt and uncle's Christian bookstore I figured I needed to school myself on all the products they sold, and that meant books as well as music, church supplies, and of course, Bibles. Silly me thought there were only a couple of different translations of the Bible. Boy was I wrong.Anyway, the first few weeks of working there I spent any down time we had in the store just walking up and down the aisles, checking out everything. It was very similar in some ways to working in the library, and then sometimes a far cry from what I was used to. But I've caught on...I've becomed hooked on Christian fiction, insist on having 2 translations of the Bible (King James and New American Standard Version), and I'm

Water Water Everywhere
2008-04-09 23:10:00
Most parents dream of the day when their children becomes successful whatevers....doctors, scientists, teachers, etc. I've pondered over this very thing so much since having EB and have come to the conclusion that to really make a small fortune in life, my child needs to be a plumber. Or an air conditioner repairman. Or the cleaner-upper man that comes to your house when disasters strike. Or even an owner of a pharmaceutical company. Because people, THAT'S where our money goes around here.So last week we discovered that the sink in EB's bathroom was leaking. Again. We've already had to remove the carpet (and why the heck does anyone put carpet in a bathroom anyway?) from his bathroom. We thought we had the leak fixed. We didn't. So we thought we fixed it again. Apparently not, s

I Have A Sensational Kid
2008-04-10 22:33:00
No, really. Today was EB's speech evaluation, but it turned into a much more complex thing than I ever imagined. I figured we would go in, they would do the evaluation, and we'd be set up with some speech therapy sessions. Turns out, EB's speech delay is only a symptom of a much bigger issue. He was diagnosed with Sensory Integration Disorder. In a nut shell, a child with a SID processes sensory "things", like sounds and physical touch much more differently than your typical child. It can be very overwhelming for them at times. Often times anything dealing with the senses can be overtsimulating. The evaluation today consisted of me answering a ton of yes/no questions about EB's behavior and the therapist observing him. Suddenly, everything about his quirks made sense. I think today

Doing What You Love
2008-04-14 09:59:00
I'll just be terribly honest. I love my job at the bookstore. LOVE it. However, the pay is not great at all. And this is something I struggle with...do I continue doing what I love even though it doesn't pay very well as far as money, OR do I find a job that I got a degree for, which would pay well, but I know I couldn't wake up every stinkin' morning and say, "God, I am so happy to be going to my job!".I think my bigger issue is that I equate my job (or title) with my worth. I can tell you it feels 100 times better to tell someone, "Oh, I'm a teacher" than to say, "umm....I work part time. In a bookstore.". It's not that I'm ashamed of my job...it's just I'm afraid people think I am uneducated. And that's silly, of course. I recently read something in Oprah magazine that struck a

I just wanted to say a huge thanks to all of you who left a comment on my last post about our son's diagnosis. It is so helpful to hear that so many of you are dealing with the very same thing and are making great strides with your children. I definitely will be visiting your blogs and asking questions. It's been an especially rough few days since his diagnosis and I've been working more than normal, so I hope to get caught up in Bloggyland very soon. But seriously...you guys rock.

Book Review and Giveaway!
2008-04-15 22:13:00
How well do you take care of yourself? Just today it hit me that I had forgotten to take my diabetes medication. And I'm sure we all do that at some point. We forget to eat well, to exercise...to meet our OWN needs so we can stay healthy and well enough to meet the needs of everyone else, including our children, spouses, other family members, etc. I was given the opportunity to review the book After Me You Come First by Sara Armstrong and Lillian Redding. I'm the type of person who feels guilty now that I am a mother for taking time to myself. I feel like if I slip off for a haircut, a grocery shopping trip alone, or just some "alone" time, I'm not doing my job. And that's not healthy. I know deep down to be an effective parent, wife, and worker I have to have some time to meet my

Getting Rid Of "Stuff"
2008-04-19 00:33:00
I'm over the mom blogging "stuff".No, I'm not hating on mom bloggers, I promise. I'm just over the "stuff" that goes along with it. Because quite frankly, I have enough stuff in my offline life to keep me plenty busy and it needs my attention.I'm over the the entrecards, the list of top mom blogs, the social sites, etc.. You know, all that stuff that takes up so much time. I am fully aware that dumping all that mom blog "stuff" will put my page hits in the toilet, and I'm coming to terms with that. People can't come visit you if they don't know you exist, right? My wise friend Afro left me a comment the other day saying that a blog should be for the person, not to please the masses. And she's right. And I'm finally willing to take a chance. So I did a little housecleaning here at th
