Yahoo! backs! OpenID!
2008-01-19 18:40:24
Yahoo! has pledged to support OpenID from the end of the month, giving a massive boost for the online identity framework that aims to cut password headaches. Yahoo.com and sister site flickr.com will add support for OpenID 2.0, Yahoo! said on Thursday. Separately, Google's Blogger confirmed yesterday plans to become an OpenID provider. The developments mean that users will be able to use Blogger URLs or Yahoo! IDs to sign onto other OpenID compliant websites. Yahoo's support is based on a version of the technology ratified in December. OpenID enables users to consolidate their internet identity, eliminating the need to create separate IDs and logins for numerous websites they may visit. Around 9,000 websites support OpenID. Yahoo!'s involvement will triple the number of OpenID accoun

Quad-core Xeons use small power plant to maul Opterons
2008-01-17 08:52:13
A recent benchmark comparing quad-core chips asserts that Intel Xeon-based servers have an edge in performance but are complete power hogs when compared to the dainty energy appetite of AMD Opteron-based servers. The test was conducted by the computer performance consulting firm Neal Nelson & Associates. It showed Intel Xeon-based servers reaching 14 per cent higher throughput performance over similarly configured AMD Opteron-based servers, which consumed 41 per cent less power. Interesting results, considering Intel's bravado about power efficiency with the Xeon chips. According to the research firm, Intel's claim isn't necessarily incorrect from a narrow perspective. It's the wide angle that bites Chipzilla. "By themselves the Intel processor chips may use less power, but all c

SUN Buy Mysql , build or destory ?
2008-01-17 08:41:02
Sun Microsystems is to pay $1bn for open source database developer MySQL. MySQL's open source databases are widely used online, but Sun is hoping to increase their use in more traditional IT and enterprise settings. The database is used by many websites - 50,000 copies a day are downloaded. MySQL will be integrated into Sun's Software, Sales and Services organisation. MySQL's CEO Marten Mickos will join Sun's senior executive team, and a group of staff from both companies will sort out the integration. MySQL makes a range of databases, including MySQL Enterprise Server, MySQL Enterprise Monitor, and MySQL Embedded Database, and claims 100 million copies have been downloaded at some time. It provides the "M" in LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python) - the software stack much of t

Asus ee like from Everex 9in sub-notebook
2008-01-17 08:33:36
Not content with mounting a serious challenge to Asus ' elfin Eee PC, US manufacturer Everex this week said it will follow up its 7in CloudBook sub-notebook with larger models later in the year. To be fair, these are all enhancements Asus has already pledged to make to the Eee PC line-up. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), it announced it would release 8in and 9in notebooks Eees later this year. In November 2007, it promised this year will see a desktop version. So Everex - owned by Taiwanese manufacturer First International (FIC) - is really just playing catch-up. So are other Taiwanese companies, with the likes of Acer, Gigabyte and others hinting they're going to be tackling the low-cost laptop and ultra-cheap desktop markets in 2008. Many of these products will be based on Intel's

2008 - the year VoIP gets hacked?
2008-01-17 08:28:17
With VoIP rapidly becoming a commodity feature in everything from TV set-top boxes to barcode scanners, Sipera's VIPER Lab predicts that 2008 will be the year it all goes pear-shaped - a prediction borne out by Cisco's first security fix of the year. VIPER reckons that denial of service attacks and eavesdropping, using hacked computers, will start to become serious issues during 2008. Cisco's latest advisory warns their Unified Communications Manager has a buffer-overflow bug which would facilitate the former, and offers a downloadable fix. But as public IP networks become part of the telecommunications infrastructure, the potential for hackers to cause mayhem increases. Microsoft Office Communications Server is, apparently, what the forward-looking hacker is currently reading up on.

Storage is still sexy, claims Iomega

Iomega has updated its svelte range of designer 2.5in portable hard drives with a larger capacity model and a better connected interface. Provided you have the eGo to match. The eGo range, which first hit the catwalks high-street back in June, already offered a hip flask-esque 160GB capacity model - reviewed here. But, the manufacturer’s now added a 250GB model into the mix, for anyone needing more ego capacity. Iomega’s also increased users’ connectivity options for both capacity drives, adding a second USB 2.0 port and a FireWire 400 interface for Mac users. However, it's also created a 250GB drive with just two USB ports and no FireWire interface though. Since the fashion industry's colours are bound to have changed by now, the 160GB model’s available in Jet Black or Alpine W

Macworld Expo Apple today renewed its AirPort Extreme BaseSation Wi-Fi router, adding in a "server grade" hard drive to convert it into a network-attached storage box dubbed the Time Capsule. As the name suggests, it's designed to work with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard 's Time Machine automatic sequential facility. Like the drive-less AirPort Extreme BaseSation, Time Capsule has a USB port on the back which can take an external hard drive and make it available over the network too. The 19.7 x 19.7 x 36.3cm unit has dual-band 802.11n on board - the 2.4GHz band and the less crowded, wider 5GHz band - and four Gigabit Ethernet ports, one of them for hooking up an internet modem. Satellite sea launch successful
2008-01-16 01:36:25
The Thuraya-3 mobile voice and data services satellite has been successfully entered geosynchronous transfer orbit after having launched from the Oydessy Pacific Ocean rocket platform. A Zenit-3SL rocket carrying the 5,173kg, Boeing-built satellite took off at 3:49am PST from a location on the equator on a mission to put a communications satellite for Abu Dhabi-based Thuraya Telecommunications into orbit. The first attempt to launch the satellite in November was scuppered due to unusually strong currents that affected the floating launch platform. The Oydessy and the launch command ship had to return to home port in Long Beach, California to resupply and then sail back to the launch location, 154 degrees west longitude. The Sea Launch system is designed to take advantage of physics that all

REALbasic for iPhone?
2008-01-16 01:29:46
Macworld 2008 Uncertainty over Apple's iPhone SDK is making a least one potential partner cautious about backing the phone, despite its popularity. Geoff, the president and chief executive of REAL Software (the company that created REALbasic ), has expressed interest in porting his company's cross-platform language to the iPhone as part of a potential mobile strategy. He said support for the iPhone was a logical choice, but he also told The Regist er, that one reason for holding off is to see what Apple allows developers to actually do with the SDK. "There are a lot of assumptions about what the SDK will let people do," Perlman said. "We have to wait and see what the SDK looks like." For Perlman it's important that the SDK gives third parties access to the same APIs as Apple so a

the wireless USB Missile Launcher Remote
2008-01-14 21:16:19
Good news, office warfare fans - the USB Missile Launcher is back, in a new, flashier wireless version that makes for the strategic siting of remote batteries.Like the wired version, the new launcher is controlled by a little targetting app running on a Windows PC. This time round, what's plugged into said system is a dish-like wireless transmitter that can talk to a similar unit wired up to the launcher itself. Supplier Brando claims dish-to-dish communications can take place at distances of up to 15ft, which the launcher can propel its payload of three foam missiles a further 20ft. Right down the corridor and into the Accounts department, in other words. The software provides full firing control, with elevation and direction ready to be set at the click of a mouse. VBA-free Office for Mac debuts
2008-01-14 20:26:03
Microsoft is throwing developers working with mixed PC and Mac environments a curveball with the long-awaited release of Office for Macintosh 2008.Microsoft has pressed ahead with delivering a suite that drops support for Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), overcoming long-running concerns among the grassroots. The macro language subset of Visual Basic has been the bread and butter architecture for those tasked with building advanced formatting in Microsoft’s signature Excel and Word suites. While VBA is still supported in the current Windows version of Office for the PC (Office 2007), the lack of an equivalent in the latest Mac version will make it harder for enterprises to maintain compatibility between Mac and PC Office applications, and make the job of developing for separate platform

Hackers graft Google Android onto hardware
2008-01-14 02:33:18
Mobile phone handsets based on Google 's Android platform are due to appear some time in the second half of this year but hackers have already got a cut-down version of the software running on devices.By combining an Android Software Development kit with an emulator and a Poky Linux kernel, a hacker called Cortez has created an installer which enables interested parties to run the platform on the Sharp Zaurus PDA. A similar approach allowed the platform to run from an Atmark-Techno Armadillo-500 CPU board, Telecoms.com reports. In both cases, the hacked-together software offer limited functionality only.In related news Taiwanese vendor Wistron NeWeb unwrapped a prototype of what may become the first commercially available Android phone. Mass web infection leaves researcher scratching her head
2008-01-14 02:03:42
Security maven Mary Landesman is in the midst of piecing together a who-done-it involving the infection of hundreds of websites that are generating an enormous amount of traffic. Or maybe it's a how-done-it.Either way, she's mostly drawing blanks.Landesman is a researcher for ScanSafe, a company that monitors the web surfing of employees at large companies and provides them with real-time intelligence about what sites are spreading malware. When a client visits a site that has already attacked someone else, the service automatically blocks the site from loading in the end user's browser. Viewing some seven billion web requests per month, companyresearchers see a fair amount of internet gremlins.Over the past four days, 15 per cent of the blocked malicioustraffic has come from just a few hu

Teenage Hacker Takes Over Polish Tram System
2008-01-11 21:27:33
JANUARY 11, 2008 | A 14-year-old boy last week adapted a television remote control unit to take control of the switching systems on the public trams in the city of Lodz, Poland, causing four derailments. According to a report, Polish police said the boy trespassed at tram depots in the city to gather information and the equipment needed to build the infra-red device. "Questioned by police in the presence of a psychologist, the teenager testified he switched tram tracks three times, once causing a tram to jump the tracks," said the police statement. A search at the boy's home turned up the device he had used to switch tram tracks. Miroslaw Micor, a spokesman for Lodz police, said: "He studied the trams and the tracks for a long time and then built a device that looked like a TV remote cont

Spammers Abuse Online Storage, File-Sharing Services

Microsoft's Windows Live SkyDrive Beta and other freebie services ripe for spammersBy Kelly Jackson HigginsSenior Editor, Dark ReadingJANUARY 10, 2008 | 3:00 PMSpammers love free hosting, so it's no surprise that they continue to hammer free online storage and file-sharing services -- these sites are attractive to spammers because they have legitimate URLs and are typically immune to blacklisting. Microsoft's Windows Live SkyDrive Beta was the latest such service to be victimized by spammers. Earlier this week, McAfee Avert Labs captured thousands of spam messages that contained links to SkyDrive. The links redirected you to an online pharmacy service. McAfee estimates that the spammers uploaded tens of thousands of files to the site. Spammers are always looking for cheap and easy ways t

Bootnet: Computer Crime service provider
2008-01-11 20:58:07
JANUARY 11, 2008 | 3:55 PM -- Back in the '80s, the telecom industry underwent a revolution in the United States, as a newly deregulated field of service providers built out their networks, fought for customers, and scrambled to occupy niches that hadn't yet been captured. Today's botnets -- the service providers of tomorrow's mass hacks and computer crimes -- currently are undergoing a similar revolution. Yes, I know. It's hard to look dispassionately at botnets as a business, especially when they cause so much trouble for enterprises, end users, and security managers. But if you want to understand where botnets are going -- in order to defend against them -- then you need to understand how the botnets' "business" is evolving, and how market forces drive them. And that evolution, from

Movie Review : ALIEN VS PREDATOR 2
2008-01-09 19:17:19
Predator wreaked havoc in the jungle and struck box-office gold, so Hollywood logic dictated that Predator 2 should raise hell in the big, bad city. Los Angeles, to be specific, and this near-future L.A. (circa 1997) is an ultra-violent playground for the invisibility-cloaked alien that hunted Arnold Schwarzenegger in the previous film. Scant explanation is given for the creature's return, and because Ah-nuld was busy making Total Recall, Danny Glover was awkwardly installed as the maverick cop (is there any other kind?) who defies a government goon (Gary Busey) to curtail the alien's inner-city killing spree. But why bother, when the victims are scummy Colombian drug lords? Don't look for intelligent answers; director Stephen Hopkins favors wall-to-wall action over sensible plotting, allo
