More food recalls
2007-03-21 03:50:00
Boy, this is getting to be all too common - food being recalled dueto it causing illnesses. The differences this time are that deaths haveoccurred as well; these deaths were of household pets (dogs andcats) due to contaminated food. An unknown number of animalshave suffered kidney failure and as many as 10 have died. The culpritappears to be "cuts and gravy" food sold in cans and pouches madeby Menu Foods; it is sold in most supermarkets and pet food storesunder various brand names. The bad food appears to have beenmade between December 2006 and March 2007 and sold through-out the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The recall is of all pet food madeat the Menu Foods plants in Emporia, Kansas and Pennsauken, NewJersey. Once again, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is hardat work to pin this down and find out exactly what happened and why.It seems to me that they definitely need to hire more inspectors. These recalls are becoming all too common and scary, even if this is'only' pet food; pet

Happy Belated Birthday
2007-03-22 19:36:00
Best wishes to my good buddy Mr. Thompson, who celebrated abirthday yesterday! I kind of found out by accident at the lastminute, and didn't have time to go online yesterday, hence thelate regards. Hope it was a good one, and that there will be manymore! Have been trying to remember if any other birthdays orother special occasions are lingering around in the near future, and all I can come up with is Easter for now. And this year, Easteris not only early, but I get only one.....let me explain. As a GreekOrthodox, I celebrate Orthodox Easter. Our church follows theold style calendar (Gregorian), so Orthodox Easter usually fallsanywhere from a week to 4 weeks later than Protestant/CatholicEaster. Hence I usually got to celebrate the holiday twice, sincemy husband is Catholic and we do live in the U.S., a primarilyProtestant nation; then I would celebrate the late arriving Ortho-dox Easter. But every 4 years the 2 religious Easters fall on thesame day; this is one of those years, so basic

I have a video camera, a digital camera, and a cell phone with acamera, yet I am constantly missing some unreal shots. Last nightour ex-work release jailbird, Kathy, who was enjoying a day off, went clothes shopping for current work release jailbird Annie.See, Annie, as of yesterday, has exactly 2 months to go before shetoo experiences freedom. She apparently has been fretting aboutwhat to wear the day she gets out; she wants a nice, good lookingoutfit and thus got Kathy to go shopping for her. So Kathy walkedinto the restaurant (albeit a bit on the intoxicated side after toomany glasses of wine!) with about 3 bags chock full of variousoutfits for Annie to try on; the plan was that Kathy would keep theones she liked until the big day and return the others. So therestaurant staff, as well as a couple of regular customers, gottreated to a fashion show by Annie; the Paris and Milan runwayshad nothing on the restaurant last night! Fortunately at the time we weren't busy at the time, so no

Taxes
2007-03-25 21:35:00
Finally got around to doing my taxes the other day, and YAY, Iwill get a few dollars back! I keep going to this same tax guy(who works at the national tax prep chain with the green logo) every year as 3 years ago he found an error made 4 years ago, and I got a few extra dollars back, so in my book he is a keeper! I know alot of folks scoff at going to these tax prepoffices and paying someone to crunch their numbers, especiallysince now there are all these software programs that allowpeople to prepare their own taxes online. However, as numbersare not my forte, and seeing how tax laws seem to change everyyear, I simply pack up my tapestry briefcase and head on over to my pal. In about an hour, everything is done, and more impor-tantly, I have avoided giving myself a major headache or making some tragic mistake. After all, the last thing I want is the IRS breathing down my neck because of my ineptitude; the tax prep chain I use guarantees their work, plus their service fee includes facin

I am certainly NOT a baseball fan...all this attention on spring trainingis over the top. While I am a big sports fan, baseball is just too slowand monotonous, especially when compared to my faves - football, basketball, soccer, and hockey. However, I do need to mention thissport that inspires yawns today for a good reason. For the first timesince 1989, a female umpire will work a Major League Baseball exhibi-tion game, on Thursday. Ria Cortesio, who umps Double-A games ona regular basis, will be in the big leagues, if only for a day. She ishoping to get promoted to Triple-A this season; after an ump has beenin Triple-A, they can get evaluated for possible promotion to the Bigs.Pam Postema was the first woman to work spring training games in1989; she was released after 2 seasons. But there seems to be a swellof support for Cortesio; several players have supported having afemale ump, with one stating that "Female eyes are as good as maleeyes". Cortesio is excited about her opportunity, r

Early Bird Special
2007-03-27 04:07:00
As someone in the service industry, I am very familiar with certainpromotions aimed at drawing in more customers. There are, ofcourse, the famed early bird specials that many restaurants (but notthe one I manage) have - discounted menu prices before the primerush time. Early Birds are aimed, for the most part, to senior citizensor those on fixed incomes (or the tightwads?!?). Bars have HappyHours, where drinks and snacks are discounted; these promotionsare geared towards those folks just getting off work. But last week Iread about a very different version of the Early Bird Special in acertain European country, and much to my shock, NOT Holland, but in neighboring Germany! In the city of Cologne, a certain brothelis offering pensioners a 50% discount for afternoon 'service' sessions;all any senior needs to do is to provide proof that he is age 66 orabove. The website of this brothel has as it's slogan "Life Begins at66!" Apparently it had started off as an experiment, with the reduced

Time to catch up, as a few days have passed since my last post.I had to open 2 days this week, and those of you who know meunderstand exactly what I mean when I say uuugggggghhhhhh! That morning shift really is for the birds.....oh, and speaking ofbirds, a family of cardinals has moved into one of the trees ofour back yard. A little over a month ago my husband and I puta bird feeder out back, and from our kitchen window we haveseen a myriad of birds visit - chickadees, thrushes, woodpeckers, pigeons, these pretty grayish birds that I don't recognize, and thecardinals. Naturally, much to our dismay, stealing, robbingsquirrels invaded as well; it took me 3 attempts to find the rightsystem to thwart their thieving efforts, but even so, they still makevaliant attempts! Anyway, my husband has determined that thefamily of cardinals is here to stay; the male cardinal (the bright redguy) often sits on one of the fences keeping his eye on things. Hedoesn't mind other birds species coming around

West Virginia Basketball
2007-04-05 05:10:00
The college basketball season wrapped up this week. The University ofTennessee won the women's NCAA tourney, the University of Floridaconquered the men's side. In the NIT tournament, the University ofWyoming was victorious on the women's side, while the Universityof West Virginia won the men's title. OR did they? After the champion-ship game between West Virginia and Clemson, won by the Moun-taineers 78-73, officials handed out commemorative T-shirts to thewinning team. There was a problem however. The last 'i' in Virginiawas missing on the T-shirts, so in reality, the players and coachesfrom the University of West 'Virgina' were holding up the champion-ship trophy. The University was quick to point out that the NITprinted the T-shirts, not the learning institution of the Mountaineerstate. hhmmm, do I go on a West Virginia joke bender, or should Ileave this alone? Let's see, did you hear about the tornado that hitWest Virginia? It caused $3 million dollars of IMPROVEMENTS!Or t

It's time to catch you folks up on the saga of Kathy, our new hostesswith the mostess at the restaurant who was supposed to move outof state with her boyfriend/fiance after she was released from the'3 hots and a cot' hotel. Well, she is still here, and to no one's surprise, including myself, she is probably not going anywhere anytime soon. After being not being allowed to move out of state, Kathy and hersupposed "love of her life" had found an apartment that she couldrent on a month to month basis until things could get worked outfor her to leave. Well, so much for best laid plans. Kathy was caught'entertaining' another man, the boyfriend/fiance found out, and now, quite naturally, they are done and their plans for the future tossedout like yesterday's trash. No, it didn't take long for Kathy to goback to her wild ways, we are all just hoping that she won't let herlife unravel as she has in the past (and end up a resident of the statehotel yet again). San Fran Ban

San Francisco is one of the most famous citiesin the United States, maybe even the world. The city by the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge,Fisherman's Wharf - all symbols of thisnorthern California city. And lest we forget,San Francisco is also home to the largest gaycommunity in the United States, fueling itsreputation as a very liberal city. Many of theliberal reforms that have sprouted in Cali-fornia have their roots in San Fran. Somehave been good ideas, others maybe not somuch. But the latest news out of the GoldenState is definitely positive. Last week, theSan Francisco Board of Supervisors voted to ban plastic bagsfrom large supermarkets and pharmacies in an effort to promoterecycling. Plastic bags are made out of petroleum products; citylegislator Ross Mirkarimi stated that the ban would save 450,000gallons of oil a year and would also remove the need to send 1,400tons of debris now sent every year to the landfill. (Recyclable plasticbags, however, would be allowed under the new law.

TV and Hockey

Have been getting my fill of TV during my mini-vacation. Last night wasthe new season premiere of 'The Soprano's', much to my husband'sdelight, as he is a huge fan. It isn't a bad show, and some episodes havebeen actually quite good, but I have never quite understood the allthe brouhaha surrounding it. Me, I am still a huge 'Law & Order' fan;I have been indulging in some 'SVU' episodes that my husband recordedon the DVR. The good thing about watching episodes in this manner isthat I can fast forward the commercials! Then tonight the next episodeof '24' comes on, so yet another spy/crime/suspense fix. That will bemore TV in 2 days than I usually watch in a week. Of course, some ofthe TV viewing always includes zapping through all the TV channels ina matter of seconds. But I did pause long enough on ESPN to noticethat the New York Islanders won their last game of the season, whichallowed them to claim the last playoff berth in the National HockeyLeague. Hockey is a sport I fol

Happy Easter!
2007-04-09 04:51:00
Well, as you all know, this year Orthodox Easter fell on the same dayas Catholic/Protestant Easter, so a doubly important day in ourhousehold! Hope everyone had a joyous holiday despite the unusuallycold temperatures. Easter, as you all know, is the celebration of theresurrection of Jesus Christ; in Orthodox countries, Easter is actuallya more important holiday than Christmas. Unlike Christmas, it has amovable date; the Orthodox church follows the Gregorian calendarto set the date, while the Catholics still follow the Julian calendarfor dating the holiday. And as I mentioned in a previous post, oncein a while (every 4-5 years), they fall together, dashing my plans ofbuying discount Easter candy! But enough said, I think I drank a tadtoo much wine with the celebratory food I prepared today (also dueto celebrating an extra day off!), so I will wrap this up with someEaster images - enjoy the chocolate bunnies and eggs!

Boy, talk about loving life these days. I do NOT have to open anydays at all this week...no dastardly morning shifts at the restaurant, which makes me happy, at least for this week anyway. I feel better, and already feel less tired, even though I haven't worked yet, it's justknowing I don't have to awake at an ungodly hour. Anyhow, I justwanted to share another outrageous story about pricey items forpretentious consumption. If you recall, last month I wrote aboutthe high priced specialty pizza and ice cream sundae in New YorkCity (the pizza had caviar, the sundae gold leaf, both sold for a$1000). Well, I just read a story in the 'Washington Post' that beatsboth. In Tokyo, Japan, a new Ritz-Carlton luxury hotel has justopened. Ok, we all know that the Ritz is, well, ritzy. In Tokyo, thePresidential suite goes for $20,000 a NIGHT. Over 200 weddingshave already been booked at the Tokyo Ritz for 2007 - starting price,$24,000 (starting price mind you!). But just as extravagant is aspecia

Sad but funny

Sometimes, you read a story in the news and you just have to laugh, despite the tragedy or absurdity of the situation. Yesterday I had oneof those moments, when I was browsing the CNN website and cameacross this headline - "ATM thief's fake leg falls off in escape bid". Imean, come on, while it is sad that someone, for one reason oranother, has a prosthetic leg, you still can't help but laugh. Thescenario in brief. Mr. fake leg man and an accomplice took a pickuptruck to a market, tied a chain around a 1500 pound ATM machine, ripped it off the floor with the truck, and then loaded the machineonto the pickup. Police gave chase, and the 2 bandits drove onto adead-end street, whereupon they abandoned their vehicle and tookoff on foot. OK, at least one of them did. The guy with the prostheticleg was found lying on the ground near the truck by police; his legwas nearby as it had fallen off in his frantic attempt to escape. As apolice spokesman put it, "...an attempt to flee from officers...

It's a snap!

Well, today Francesca, my little gal pal who frequents the restaurant, officially turns 21. I can only imagine her state of inebriation by thetime this day ends! Her sister Lilly was in the other night and told mehow she had gotten her a digital camera and was going to take her outto dinner. She did hope she would get a hold of lil' sis BEFORE she hadstarted drinking! Lilly then had a horrible thought, how the new camerashe plans to give to Francesca could capture compromising images! Itried to reassure her, that she would be too drunk to operate it - let'ssee. Digital cameras are definitely among the best inventions in thelast decade. You took a lousy picture? No problem - DELETE! Andsome of the memory cards hold way more pictures than most peoplecould ever take. Since my husband and I have had our digital camera, pictures have been a breeze. We snap away, insert the memory cardinto the computer, check them all out, and get rid of what we don't like. Then hubby gets all creative with

Horrible Tragedy
2007-04-17 01:16:00
Today the entire state of Virginia is in mourning for thesenseless act that occurred in Blacksburg, Virginia. Aninsane gunman shot and killed, at last count, 32 people, and wounded at least 15 more on the Virginia Tech campus. Our local university is the main rival/nemesis to theVirginia Tech Hokies, but today that rivalry is replaced bysorrow and despair...why did this happen, why were theselives snuffed out so senselessly, why why why?Prayers go out to all of the families and friends of the victims.

State of shock
2007-04-18 04:10:00
Another sad day. We know who the Virginia Tech killer was, a student,a senior, who would have graduated soon, but instead sent himself tothe depths of Hades after destroying over 30 families (including hisown). And now on the various news websites we see the pictures ofsome of the victims, the happy faces of lives ended so suddenly andruthlessly. Professors, students, men, women, Virginians, Americans, even citizens of other nations. It simply makes no sense. We couldbeat our heads against a multitude of walls and never comprehendwhat on earth was going on in the shooter's mind as he shot....andreloaded....and shot again....what was going on so bad in his mind, inhis life....that made him do this? Cannot comprehend...impossible.

Final thoughts
2007-04-20 17:02:00
After today I won't be writing about the Virginia Tech tragedy. All thewebsites, television stations, magazines and newspapers are givingabove and beyond coverage, and I can only go into my level of shockand sorrow only so much before becoming repetitive beyond belief; itall changes nothing, the irreparable damage is done. My sympathiesgo out to the families and loved ones of the victims, and even to thefamily of the shooter; never in their wildest dreams could they haveimagined their son could, would do such a horrible act, yet they willhave to live with it for the rest of their lives. The Governor of Virginiahas declared today a day of mourning; vigils and ceremonies are beingheld state-wide, bells are being tolled, candles being lit. The last 2 days,at the restaurant, I have noticed many customers wearing VirginiaTech apparel or adorned with Hokie colors, maroon and orange. It is aheartening sign of support and solidarity, especially in what is, or wasbefore Monday, a very anti-Vir

Folks get frustrated at times with things...just stuff in general.AND, folks take alot of things and stuff for granted. But everyonce in a while, we are reminded that sometimes we get upsetand frustrated over NOTHING, and that we can't ALWAYS take matters for granted. I got reminded of that this pastweekend, and am now just heaving a big sigh of relief. Yes, I amwriting rather cryptically, as I don't feel the need or desire to gointo rather personal details. But I did get a little bit of an insightas to who I can count on at the restaurant, and who I cannot, when an emergency arises. I was also privy to yet anotherexample of a true and valued friendship (you know who you areP & J ... sorry we had to postpone dinner). As for Michelle, whoI was kind of mean and rude to...well, at least more than usual(wink wink!!), thanks for just being you. Thanks to Lola too, whoI didn't get to actually speak to, but found her numerous andconcerned communications. It takes alot of crazy, fun, coo

Bye bye work release
2007-04-28 19:23:00
There truely is never a dull moment at the restaurant. Just when wethink we have slipped into a monotonous routine - WHAP - a big oleslap knocks us back to our dysfunctional reality! Case in point - lateyesterday afternoon - the dinner rush was just getting underway, theplace was about 1/2 full or so. Two out of my three waitresses werethere, the 3rd on the way. Two correctional officers bolted into therestaurant and headed towards Annie, our remaining work-release gal.Normally I wouldn't have been alarmed, as officers occasionally dropby to check in on Annie, I guess to make sure that she is where she issupposed to be, and doing what she is supposed to be doing; theofficers would make some kind of small talk. But yesterday no banter,no strolling about, but a determined bee-line. I saw them reach Annieand ask her to go around to the back. After less than a minute, theother waitress, Melinda, ran towards me. She told me that I shouldgo to the back, that the officers were cuffing Annie

What the heck? We are a year and a half away from the 2008presidential election, yet we have already had our first debate.Eight Democratic hopefuls for the White House took part in anevent held in South Carolina last night. It turned out to be afairly ho-hum gathering, as most naturally bashed the war inIraq. The surprise of the debate was a little known ex-senatorfrom Alaska, Mike Gravel. According to CNN pundits, he shookup the stage more than once, at one point calling the U.S. "thegreatest violater of the non-proliferation treaty". (The 1968Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which the U.S. has signed, calls for the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, disarmament, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.) The atmosphere, for themost part, however, was cordial; no one came out ahead ordamaged. What I simply don't get is how early all these candidatesdeclared their intentions, and, subsequently, how soon, beforeeven the first caucus or primary, a debate was held. I havefollowed America

One of the funniest stories ever!
2007-04-27 01:46:00
Ok, since I have become somewhat internet savvy, with the ability tosurf and find far out stories, I have come across some beauts. But thisone just might take the cake. An internet company called 'Poodles asPets' has, as the article I read aptly stated, "fleeced" as many as 2000Japanese citizens. Based out of Australia and England, 'Poodles as Pets'marketed poodles as must-have accessories for the Japanese rich and glamorous. The problem? They were sending their unwitting clientele neatly coiffured lambs, passing them off as dogs! I am not joking, andyes, I have been laughing for the last 10 minutes! Apparently poodledogs are very rare in Japan, thus few people know what they actuallylook like. The scam was discovered as several owners began to questionwhy their "dogs" never barked or ate their dog food! The kicker waswhen a leading Japanese actress went on a TV talk show with picturesof her "dog", only to be told that it was a lamb! (I REALLY need to stoplaughing now!) Needless to

Good move - bad move
2007-04-25 03:53:00
Came across a couple of stories online today that displayed decisionmaking on the opposite ends of the spectrum - smart and dumb.First the idiotic move. A man in Florida ran his van into a home, andproceeded to escape on foot as the homeowners watched. However,he left one of his shoes behind. An hour later, as police were at thescene investigating, a bloody, barefoot man, clad only in boxershorts, walked up. Investigators noticed facial injuries on this man, consistent with hitting a steering wheel; an officer proceeded toask the injured guy to try on the shoe. It was a perfect fit! Well, Iguess you could call this a sad, warped version of Cinderella! A muchsmarter character came out ahead in England this week. A retiredengineer, 10 years ago, had placed a 100 pound bet with a bookmakerthat he would live to be 100 years old. Well, that 100 pounds turnedinto 25,000 pounds ($50,000 USD) this week as the gentlemancelebrated his 100th birthday! His secret to longevity? A daily dietof porrid

Some disturbing stuff
2007-05-01 06:13:00
Just got done reading a couple of odd stories at Reuters.com, andthey both involved the populous Asian nation of India. The firstone was rather alarming. A farmer in eastern India found out thatone of his employees had failed to milk his cows, so he went andfound the employee.....and beheaded him. Simply AWFUL. Thenext story was again set in eastern India. A wedding was about tooccur in a small village, but the groom showed up drunk. Villagersat the wedding did the 'logical' thing - they decided he was toodrunk to get married. So, with the approval of the bride's family,it was decided to put the younger brother of the drunkard at thealter with the bride-to-be. Well, I knew about the pre-arrangedmarraige deals in India, but allowing other family members tostep in really takes it way too far...WOW. (If you were curious, the bride's say in all this? ZIP, ZERO, ZILCH.) The intoxicatedex-groom did apologize for his behavior later, but lamented thefact that word would get around about his

Ah, just got home after having a simply superb evening. Hubby and Iwent out to dinner with our dear friends the Thompsons. It was longoverdue, so we made the most of it. We had a very nice dinner, actuallybetter than expected as it was at a restaurant my husband and I hadtried in the past and had been rather disappointed. But since we hadheard that there had been some menu changes and improvements, wedecided to give it another go, this time with company; a great time washad by all! We then sat a spell at the Thompson's house, whereupon myhubby basically held a clinic. See, he has a Motorola RAZR phone, andrecently the Thompsons each got one too. So naturally my tech whizhad to show them various functions of the phone and teach them howto use it. So I sat there, witnessing a Motorola how-to session, and letme tell you, it was rather amusing! Camera, photos, ringtones, how tosave and/or send, the works. If the Thompsons can actually rememberall the new info, they are more capable folks

Some good news
2007-04-29 18:42:00
YES! I read in CNN yesterday, right before I left for work, that therehas been an arrest in the mugging of the 101 year old woman in NewYork. I am sure y'all remember the case last month, and saw the verydisturbing video on all the news channels. Well, a 44 year old manwas questioned after police arrested him on an unrelated drug charge.Officers questioned him after noticing he matched a photo of a personwanted in the attack of the 101 year old woman; he also attacked an85 year old woman attacked around the same time. He was chargedafter a line of questioning determined that the police had their man;he will be held without bail on charges of robbery, grand larceny, burglary, and assault. Furthermore, this lowlife will be charged withhate crimes as well, since he targeted elderly people. In New York, attacks on people over 60 years old are a violation of New YorkState Hate Crimes Act of 2000. So, basically, this slime is facing up to25 years in the slammer. hhhmmmm, it is obvious that th

Concert aftermath...and France?

As expected, the restaurant was rather crowded last night before andafter the concert, which was good. It made time go by, and I enjoyedthe hectic pace, except when the soda machine lost the carbonation, making all the sodas flat! As it was too busy to tackle the problem rightthen, I just told the wait staff to push tea, juice, and coffee! Not toomany drunks thankfully, a good crowd for the most part. Now today Iwill simply put it into cruise control. Sunday is the last day of mywork week, and usually alot of regulars and friends drop by for a visit. So, all in all, it usually turns out to be a good day! To change streamscompletely, I was just scanning CNN for the headlines, and todayFrance has a new president. His name is Nicolas Sarkozy, a conserva-tive; he garnered 53% of the vote over Segolene Royal's 47%. Just to update you on some restaurant goings-on. Got a letter from ourex-work release chick Annie, who as I reported last week, was rudelytaken from the restaurant and had her work release revoked just for alittle 'contraband' found in her cell....oh well. Anyway, she wrote a letterapologizing for what happened, how she misses us and her regularcustomers, and hopes to come back once she is released. I was able tofind out that through a mutual acquaintance that Annie's hearing isnext week; it will be determined at that time if she will be punishedwith additional time. I hope not, she has less than 20 days to go, she'sin the homestretch so to speak (a horseracing reference on Derby Day!).Meanwhile a couple of new waitresses have been training this week, time will tell if either of them stick or are even worth a darn. Another debate
2007-05-04 20:34:00
As I reported last week, the Democratic candidates for president heldtheir first debate, a year and a half before the election. Well, last night,it was the Republican's turn. Held in a highly symbolic setting, theRonald Reagan Library in California, the debate pitted the 10 GOPcandidates against each other. To be quite honest, I hadn't evenheard of 4 of them. There could be a couple of reasons for that - first, alot of attention has been focused on the 2 higher profile candidates,Rudy Giuliani and John McCain; second, alot of attention has beengarnered by Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. In any case, the GOP event last night focused on the Iraq war again. Most of the gentlemen didn't object to the war itself, but as to how itwas executed. Abortion and gay rights were other hot button issuestackled. But the most revealing point about the debate itself was howmany times the name of Ronald Reagan was mentioned -19 times....19!As CNN reported, "GOP hopefuls were not

The shakers above are just examples of some of theneat stuff featured on the site. Furthermore, you can keep up on thelatest food news, such as the headline today about Martha Stewart.Apparently, Martha Stewart Living Onmimedia and Costco reached an agreement to market frozen and fresh foods to customers startingin 2008. Now, as most of you know, I am a fan of Ms. Stewart, and I still think she was unjustly incarcerated a few years back, but I digress! But I am not so sure how the food thing will go over. As much as I like some of her designs, the few times I watched hercooking show
