Mauna Kea Hotel Closes 2006-12-07 04:47:00
Sometimes we hear news of the passing of someone or a closing of a famous place, and it hits us hard...even if we didn't know them all that well. Such was the case when I watched the television news report this past week and heard the famous Big Island Resort Hotel
, the Mauna Kea
, had been closed down, perhaps permanently. This sad news felt like the end of an era for me. Apparently an October earthquake wreaked heavy structural damage to this older hotel.
The blog in USA Today online by Larry Olmsted says it so very well, "Mauna Kea
is not just any big Hawaiian luxury hotel. It is the oldest and most venerable golf resort in the state, and was once the flagship property of Laurence Rockefeller's Rock Resorts chain." You can read the rest of his blog here.
Here's my personal connection with the Mauna Kea Hotel. She was the FIRST resort hotel I ever visited in the Hawaiian Islands, and back then, she was the bomb. Beautiful antiquities and exotic Oriental and Hawaiian items and

These are the photos from the Keawalai Congregational Church in Makena, Maui. The church sits alongside the ocean with an ancient cemetery on the Church grounds. This is sacred, holy land, and it's a very uplifting and special experience to attend a service or a wedding here.

Thirteen Things I Love About This Season 2006-12-01 00:56:00 1. Poinsettas--they bloom on our property every year during this season. Photographed here are the first ones to bloom.2. Christmas music--what can I say but I love to hear it and love to sing the golden oldies. Oh Holy Night is my all-time favorite.3. Christmas cards--sending and receiving them. Were it not for Christmas letters and cards, I wouldn't be caught up on the lives of many others.4. Christmas parties--seeing people I only see once a year at a Christmas party is a treat.5. Christmas cookies and candies---this is the time of the year when we receive lots of sweets in the mail, many of them handmade.6. Cooler weather--Maui is still fairly warm and tropical, but not as hot. The nights are cool.7. Christmas gifts--giving and receiving them is so much fun!8. The Spirit of the Season
--there's a joyous energy & good cheer at this time of year.9. Christmas festivals, church events and shows--Unity Church always creates a fabulous performance as do many other churches.10. The Humpb Read more:Thirteen
Taking Time To Breathe 2006-11-30 06:10:00
I've been diligently working for many months on the computer, and I needed to take a break today. After all, I reminded myself--I should take the time to enjoy Paradise! Thus I enjoyed a hot-rock massage, meditated, spent time in Nature, read a book and forced myself away to stay away from the computer! This break from the computer isn't easy for me because I have such a strong inclination to study, research, write on my many blogs, and learn new things.
A computer is like having a library at your fingertips, and there are always so many fascinating sites to catch -up with and information to research. If the internet had been around when I was a kid, I would have been a total geek. Lucky for me computers weren't around, so I had the opportunity to be a tomboy!

Why Not Have at least TWO Hospitals on Maui? 2006-11-29 03:43:00 Photo: terragalleriaFor some time now I have been reading editorials and letters to editors in different Maui newspapers discussing the pros and cons of adding a second hospital to Maui. The proposed second hospital is the Malulani Health & Medical Center, and although the permit for it was denied, the push is on to get the permit reversed. The Maulani Center is a $212 million, 150-bed hospital proposed to be built on 40 acres at the Maui Research & Technology Park in Kihei. For those reading my post and unfamiliar with Maui, Kihei is located in South Maui. Read the story about this controversy in today's Maui News here. Here's my two cents on this matter: since Maui's population is growing and especially in South & West Maui, a SECOND hospital would be a worthy addition, especially if there were any emergencies. And why not add a THIRD medical facility in West Maui while they're at it? Technorati Tags:Maui hospitals, Malulani Health & Medical Center, second hospital on Maui, Ma Read more:least

Thirteen Things to Consider For Christmas 2006-12-07 22:31:00 1. Re-gifting. Some people consider this idea as being supremely tacky, but I feel it's an opportunity to share what you're not using. As long as the gift hasn't been personalized or used, why not?!2. Check out this website for Toy Safety Tips which lists the Worst Toys.3. Donate money and/or time to alternate causes. Tis the season when charities count on your generosity to make it through the year.4. Get away from it all, and check into one of the resorts Concierge.com has picked as the World's Sexiest Resorts.5. Send a consolation card to Andy Rooney who has been an Internet Hoax Victim. Read his story here. Heck, I liked the articles everyone kept emailing me which it turns out he didn't write!6. Catch up on your reading. Read some of my Blogger Blogs. You can find them if you click on the link about Kuanyin near the top of this blog.7. Go to the movies. After seeing the previews for "Apocalypto", I wanted to see what looked like a great movie--that is until I read the reviews Read more:Christmas

Movie Review of "The Holiday" 2006-12-11 05:53:00
Admittedly my movie taste doesn't fit with the major movie-going population as I'm averse to downloading gory, bloody, horrifying, or terrifying images into my subconscious through a movie. Thus, I avoid LOTS of the more popular movies, and my taste in movies runs to funny, kiddy, adventurous (I look away for the scary segments), and romantic. Usually the movies I rave about which have given me my money's worth are given less than "hot" reviews by the movie critics. Witness the review given my favorite new movie "The Holiday
" on Rotten Tomatoes:
"Just in time for the yuletide season, "The Holiday" provides a sugary treat for fans of chick flicks. Perhaps, say critics, a little too sugary. "The Holiday" tells the tale of two women who live on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean; unlucky in love, they decide to swap houses in order to jump-start their lives. Love ensues. The pundits say the film has undeniable charm and a great cast, but is as predictable and fluffy as the day Read more:Movie Review

Cars of the Future? 2006-12-13 06:05:00
Photo: terragalleria
I recently checked out some of the cars displayed on the website at the recent Alt Car Expo. This event just took place this last weekend in Santa Monica, California at the Barker Hangar, and supposedly it was "the largest presentation ever of hydrogen, electric, natural gas, biodiesel, ethanol and high MPG cars." This is very interesting to me considering the situation we're ALL in, right? I mean...let's get REAL. We're gonna have to change to new vehicles.
Then I come across this other website called Knuttz with the Old Boy Toyz Gone Wild 'N Bad 'N Outrageous. I checked these vehicles out and went whooaaaa....we're at the Crossroads! You can't help but see it! The Polarities are Glaring!

A New Diet Plan 2006-12-14 05:06:00
I read the most amazing news article today which I want to share with you. The title of this article is "Obesity May Be Contagious". Apparently the scientists have researched and located a pathogen called the "adenovirus Ad-37" and are suggesting it is the cause of obesity. Now we have a virus to blame, and we can forgive ourselves for not exercising enough, eating too much, or eating fattening foods. You can read the full article here at Live Science
. Of course, they haven't suggested the cure yet, but we're half-way there.
I feel so much better. Don't you?

Like most people during this hectic Christmas season, having ENOUGH time for everything can be extremely challenging. This is why the GRINCH in me/us can jump out when we are trying to reach a Customer Service agent on the telephone about a problem, a return, a question, or whatever. Often I/you are left hanging on the phone (as happened to me recently) for LONG periods of time listening to Christmas music. Ordinarily I love Christmas music, but listening to this music while waiting for someone to answer--well, this very same music becomes extremely annoying.
This is why I was so delighted to Stumble Upon a fabulous site recently. Before I tell you about the site, let me tell you about Stumble Upon. It is free and is a feature of Mozilla Firefox...it's simply an add-on at the top of your computer tool bar. I have been enjoying it very much since I downloaded it onto my computer this past year, and every now and then, I stumble around and disco

My Silly Gift To You 2006-12-22 04:52:00
When I think about what gifts to give others, I take into consideration the kind of person they are...what they need....what I can afford...what is available...what might really blow their mind....what would be most desired by them..how hard will it be to acquire an item...can I have it delivered...and on and on ad infinitum. In other words, I put a lot of thought into my gift giving and deliberate the many variables, all of which brings me to this blog and my gift to YOU every day
INCLUDING Christmas Day!
Today I am gifting you a silly, funny gift. It is
Simon Sez Santa
. You can make this Santa do ALMOST anything! I don't know how this technology works. It's really amazing to me. This Santa gave me some chuckles, giggles and grins. Of course, today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and an ancient Holy Day, so I'm feeling really good today and totally into the Christmas Spirit of Good Cheer.

Thirteen Gifts I Received for Christmas Which I Love 2006-12-28 22:20:00 Although I received MORE than thirteen gifts for Christmas

Wayne Brady Wows Us at the MACC 2006-12-29 20:11:00 WayneBrady
performed his 11th performance on Maui, but last night was the first time I've seen his improv touring act titled "Wayne Brady and Friends." Wow--was our three-some impressed with his talent and the show! We laughed so hard, nudging each other constantly with recognition of his comedic gifts as tears rolled down our faces.
This was my first time to watch Wayne in action as I had never viewed his successful tv shows "The Wayne Brady Show" and "Whose Line Is It Anyway". The show began with his co-comedians asking the audience for words from audience members. A male voice down the aisle from us kept shouting out the word 'conundrum', but because we were further back in the orchestra area, the word never registered with the man acknowledging words. The male voice kept shouting louder and louder this word, and as he did so, it became funnier and funnier to us. Zero recognition! Finally he got his friends in on the act, and they shouted out CONUNDRUM in a loud chorus! Stil
My Best of 2006 2007-01-01 03:51:00 Photo: Charles PfeilAfter reviewing this exciting, challenging and dramatic year, I have picked my fav's and Best Of 2006 to share with you. Some were easy picks and others were more complicated, but I finally came up with my 'best-of's 2006', so here goes:Best Book: Nora Ephron's "I Feel Bad About My Neck And Other Thoughts on Being A Woman". Nora is a brilliant writer, and she comes from the same journalistic background of 'who-what-when-where-how school' as I do. She writes clean, easy-to-read, page-turning prose. I couldn't put the book down, and even if you've never lived in New York City or Washington D.C. where many of the stories are set, you'll enjoy her wicked sense of humor and scorching honesty about "life as a woman of a certain age."Best Memorable Moment: Our group of four were invited for a private audience with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, at his home in McLeod Ganj, India. Spending up-close and personal time with this wise, kind & loving being was the me
New Year's Intentions 2007-01-04 00:17:00
Photo: Charles Pfeil
Somehow the word 'resolutions' doesn't work for me when it comes to making so-called New Year
's Resolutions. I prefer the word 'intentions' as it feels more active where 'resolutions' feels more passive. But that's just me. I'm a huge believer in writing things down for clarity. Thus, some of my New Year's Intentions this year are:
1. To re-engage my daily communion with Nature and not get so entrapped by my computer, blogs and writing!
2. To stretch my skills and learn new things such as downloading my videos to YouTube. I know I can do it...it's just a matter of a learning curve. I learned more about blogging this past year when I took my blogging to new heights which some days really tested my nerves and stressed me out. Now I feel comfortable with much of the in's and out's of blogging....although I'm not ALL The Way there yet!
3. To get back into my exercise routines.
4. To deepen my compassion.
What are yours?
Here's a great movie cal
Thirteen Books I Plan To Read In 2007 2007-01-04 20:07:00
Today I'm accomplishing two things in ONE post. I am listing ThirteenBooks
To Be Read (TBR) in 2007 and participating in this book challenge with many others. If you want to get in on this challenge (there are prizes!), here's the link at Cafe-Books. The cut-off date to get involved is January 31st, so let them know at Cafe-Books and then join their Yahoo Group.
Since I'm a book-aholic and a speed-reader, this challenge should be easy for me! I say that not in a bragging way, but with candor. I've always loved to read, and during the summers in my small town, there was a contest at our local library which focused on how many books you could read during the summer when school was out. In the middle of the library, there was a little fake tree with reader's names hanging from the branches on colored paper. The top of the tree paper was the reader who had read the most, after having given a synopsis out-loud to the librarian. I always aspired to be at the top of that tree, and qu
Taking Time Out For Review 2007-01-09 03:30:00

On Christmas Day my partner wrote a long blog on Blogger for his football blog, but when it came time to review it after publishing it, the published article was missing except for a half a paragraph. He went berserk. The same thing just happened to me! I don't know what's going on, but it's enough to drive some bloggers crazy, angry and ready to pull out all their hair.
Me? No biggie. I've been taking a blogging holiday anyway, and I've been re-assessing how much I want to blog in 2007 anyway! So I'm just posting again. Of course, I'm writing something different this time because part of me is superstitious and feels maybe I wasn't supposed to write what I wrote! Maybe my angels were saving me!?

Happiness 101 from the New York Times3. The link I had listed here didn't work when I went back to check it, so I'm adding something else here: As reported in the Maui News of January 9th: our Hawaii State Senator Daniel Inouye says, "It's too soon for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama to run for president in 2008". 4. "No cellphone? No BlackBerry? No email? No way? (It's true.) from USAToday.com5. Hookipa Windsurfers 2007-01-13 04:55:00
Today I spent some time at Hookipa (on the North Shore of Maui outside of Paia)watching the windsurfers. These photos I took below don't really do justice to the beauty of this gorgeous place or the high energy. I needed a telephoto lens on my camera! There was a bright yellow helicoptor hovering over the windsurfers--I bet whomever was filming the windsurfers from this vantage point really got some extraordinary shots.
