Tsunami Excitement In the Hawaiian Islands
2007-01-14 19:12:00
Photo: Terragalleria Friday night was fairly exciting as we waited to hear if a tsunami were going to reach our shores. There had been a large earthquake off the coast of Japan, and thus the public here in Hawaii had been put on alert through television, radio and then the phone calls--what we call the coconut telegraph hotline. The news was of what is called a "tsunami watch" with a possible evacuation for those who live in low-lying areas or near the shore. (We don't.) However, my concern for others and the 'aina' was strong, so I waited up for the warning to be either upgraded (which would have meant evacuation for many) OR for the word from the NWS that there was nothing to be concerned about. This news happened before midnight. Good news. Now go to bed. Yeh! Last evening as I watched the news on television, I saw where Human Error had crept into this tsunami watch announcement, and I'm sure the famous "Murphy" had a good, hearty laugh. The National Weather Service which is

Best Hair at the 2007 Golden Globes
2007-01-16 21:36:00
Art courtesy of Josephine Wall I'm one of those people who notices hair--both my own and others. So it's only natural that I would scope out the hair of what are considered the most fashionable, chic women who show up for the Golden Globe Awards every year. Here is my run-down of who I thought looked great and who didn't in 2007 at the Globes : The list of the hairstyles on the actors I liked is much longer than the ones I didn't. Some of my favorites were: Evangeline Lilly, Beyonce, Jessica Biel, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Hudson, Penelope Cruz, Drew Barrymore, Ali Larter, Scarlett Johansen, and Angelina Jolie. Salma Hayek looked divine with her dark hair and white, sexy dress. She stole the show which wasn't easy to do. The hairstyles I didn't like were: Sharon Stone--way too matronly! Sienna Miller--what was she thinking with that thick alpine braid going across the top of her head with the messy back part?! Cameron Diaz--I liked her better as a blond, and her lipstick w

Those Who Touch Our Lives
2007-01-17 22:57:00
Photo: Charles Pfeil I've recently tackled and completed tasks about which I've procrastinated for a long, long time. The biggest JOB was re-working and organizing our large storage closet, a feng-shui nightmare if there ever was one. This is the closet where everything gets tossed and where eventually everything ends up jumbled together. I'm sure everyone might possibly have one of these in their home at one point or the other. Total chaos ruled this closet. No more! Now I can actually walk into it, and I know where everything is even if the closet bulges a bit. The second transformation was my 'art-space'. Said art-space was totally clogged with papers, junk, doo-dads, odd-and-ends, and what-not's which didn't belong in this space. Somehow they had found a home there, and this space had become another one of my feng-shui nightmares. Organizing, sifting-through, and deleting the not-art-stuff was a major challenge, and one I'm still working on. I have to be in a certain m

Thursday Thirteen Things of Beauty I Saw This Week
2007-01-18 21:06:00
One of the great blessings in life is to be able to appreciate beauty, and beauty comes in many forms, shapes, sizes, sounds, feels, and colors. I'd like to share thirteen beautiful sites/things/objects/people I saw this week. Maybe you will find them beautiful as well.1. What is it? A leaf-filled drain cover!2. Two trees--one windswept, and one straight and tall.3. Our cat Anela takes her morning sunbath.4. A yellow rose bloomed.5. The window garden planter at Tommy Bahama's store is loaded with beautiful orchids.6. The tablecloth and chair at the Cheeseburger in Paradise Restaurant at the Shops of Wailea has a certain flair.7. And so does its bar!8. The bird eyes our food.9. The fountain in the center of the Shops of Wailea shopping center dances.10. I watched a happy child frolic at the seashore.11. I drove past billowing sugar cane plants in fields.12.I watched lots of planes arriving on Maui.13. I admired a stately tree at Baldwin Beach Park.To Get the Thursday Thirteen Code,

Kris Kristofferson In Concert At the MACC
2007-01-21 10:34:00
We attended the Kris Kristofferson Benefit Concert to Support Hana High School Athletics this evening at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Apparently there was going to be a cut-back on the monies available for the athletics, so Kris who lives in Hana performed to raise monies for the Hana High School Athletic Program. Additional donations can be sent to:Hana High School AthleticsP.O. Box 128Hana, HI 96713Kris played most of his golden-oldies which the more mature audience ate up, especially my partner, who is a huge fan. He first met Kris when Kris performed at a hole-in-the-wall-club called The Poison Apple in Detroit, Michigan way back when. That was when Kris was with Rita Coolidge, according to my partner who is a huge repository of trivia and facts about Kris. Naturally, he has all of Kris's old albums (yes, those ancient 'things'!) signed by Kris too!One lady behind me slept through most of the concert. The older lady on my right shouted out for a song--as did my partner becau

Going Digital & Flowing With Change
2007-01-23 02:20:00
For many a year--ever since I began taking digital photos--I have procrastinated about moving my old photos to digital. However, with the push from this most recent Capricorn New Moon, I have begun a huge undertaking: scanning thousands of photos into my computer, categorizing them, and getting organized by subject, theme, and time period. I knew this task would be time-consuming, but I had no idea how much satisfaction I would feel in getting organized. And am I ever feeling buzzed about this project! My initial plan was to pace myself and only scan in 100 photos a day, but I'm getting such a charge on this that I am now exceeding that limit! In the past I've used Flickr and Picture Trail. Picasa drove me absolutely up the wall with its complexity, so I let that program go. My latest love affair is with Slide. Slide is so easy to use, and they give you many options of how you can arrange your photos as for style, themes, skins, and size. They give you the code to download your

Thirteen Famous Hawaiian Characters
2007-01-25 20:37:00
Art Courtesy of Love Peace Happiness Many people living outside the Hawaiian Islands have heard about Pele, the famous Fire Goddess. The Hawaiian family is a large one, and outside of the Islands, many of the other well-known characters around which the myths and legends of Hawaii are woven are unknown-- so here's some for my Thursday Thirteen list beginning with the revered Madame Pele: 1. Pele came to the Islands from the South Seas and discovered the Hawaiian Islands as they presently are. After visiting all the islands, she settled in Puna on the Big Island of Hawaii (Halema'uma'u)where she still resides today. She is often reported to be seen in physical form wearing either white or red. 2. Hi'iaka is the beloved youngest sister of Pele and figures into many Hawaiian myths. One of the most famous of these myths is when Pele sent Hi'iaka on a journey to locate Lohi'au, the lover of Pele. A love affair began with Lohi'au and Hi'iaka. 3. Lohi'au pissed off Pele so much

Fire On The Mountain
2007-01-26 18:21:00
The forest fire in Kula began several days ago, but as of last night, the fire was still burning! I couldn't sleep last night, and I finally got out of bed. When I looked out my window, I couldn't believe what I was seeing: all across the top of the mountain looked like one huge blaze. My digital photo doesn't begin to capture the extent of the blaze I watched at 2:30 am this morning. The Maui News of January 25th ran this story yesterday: "Polipoli forest reserve blaze still burning". You can read more here. An estimated 30 acres of pine and native forest have been burned. Today there is a lots of smoke in the air, and this is the photo taken this morning. I can't see any fires now in the daylight--just smoke. The fire is still blazing, and so far, no homes are in danger. However, if the Kona Winds start blowing, this situation could change in a heartbeat. Polipoli was very special to me, and one I have written about in several articles. So I am extremely saddened and tro

Maui Dharma Center Celebrates Lha Bab Stupa
2007-01-29 03:06:00
Today was a very special day. We attended the celebration of the new Maui Dharma Center Lha Bab Stupa in Paia. This memorial stupa in honor of the late Lama Tenzin (the former head of the Dharma Center who passed away in 2001) has been conceived and spearheaded by Georgianna Cook (photographed in white in the following slide show) who worked closely with Lama Tenzin and still sits on the board and manages the Dharma Center. The Dharma Center gave the public a chance to participate in the ceremonial opening today by asking for items to be contributed to be sealed inside the Stupa-- anything of spiritual, sentimental value...but not anything unclean. As the participants (including us) filed up the stairs, we had to cover our faces with a cloth (which was provided for us) to put over our mouth and nose and another cloth to hold whatever was given to us that had been donated. Our hands could not touch the items we carried up the stairs into the stupa. Many items had been put on the ceremonia

The Winds Doth Blow
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Today the ferocious winds are still blowing. Everything that wasn't tied down on our deck got either knocked down, blown around, or blown away. My wind chimes outside my window where my computer desk sits are going crazy. The big-mother-chime has a long metal piece which hangs down from the middle. Every now and then a gust will blow this hard metal right into the window, and the sound is as if a bullet is hitting my window. I jump out of my skin every time this happens! To say I am disturbed by these aggravating winds is putting it mildly! The windsurfers are probably ecstatic. After writing this first paragraph, it struck me the smart thing to do would be to walk outside and simply take down the chimes! And so I will! I just did it. Ahhh....no more bullet sounds. If all of life's annoyances were this simple. Most every day an annoyance enters my life. Such is life. Depending upon the size of the annoyance, I am either mildly annoyed or hugely stressed. The list is endless: where di

Thirteen Recent Discoveries
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I am by nature a curious cat. Thus, I am always discovering new things. Here's some of my past week's discoveries which I think are fabulous, or at the very least, interesting.1. YotelAt last-- two affordable, luxury hotels will open in Spring, 2007 at Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. They are billed as "the world's most radical hotel." I like the idea of booking a room for a long, layover right at the airports! I hope this concept hotel works, and the idea spreads to many airports.2. Last.fm I have previously tried Pandora, and now I have downloaded this one which is somewhat similar. I am busy test-driving it now.3. Sonific This program allows you to choose music to download on your blogs, so I'm trying it out on one of my blogs: Moonlight Becomes Me. Having asked the opinion of various friends about the choice of song and whether they like music to begin downloading on a website, I have received mixed reviews thus far. I was hoping to achieve a mystical vibe by adding the music.

Yeh, It's About Time Alright!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Since time seems to be a theme for me in some of my other blogs, I might as well continue with the 'time thread' and share with you a short video of a Maui friend of mine, Steve Zuwala, singing "It's About Time".The photo is of a large redwood tree. I took it at Polipoli (upcountry Maui) several years ago--600 acres and many beautiful old redwood trees were destroyed in the recent Maui fire. If you read that post, check out the comments which accompanies it, for a reader sent me really great quality photos of the horrible fire.Click here for the video!Technorati Tags:Steve Zuwala, YouTube, music, It's About Time

Cha-Cha-Cha-Changes In Beach & Life
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Yesterday was my established Sunday Beach -Day with my daughter at our favorite nearby beach. We hadn't gone in several Sundays because of bad weather, and so we were totally shocked to see most of our beach washed away! Probably two-thirds of the sand had vanished, and instead there were lots of rocks and some mysterious cement blocks. We were most curious about the cement blocks (you can see them in the foreground of the above photo). Were they under the water where we once swam? We don't recall any huge concrete blocks like this! Or did they wash up from the bad storm? Most mystifying.Because so much of the sand had disappeared, everyone was lined-up next to one another on the beach which made it more cozy I guess you could say. I was happy it was Super Bowl Sunday, or else all the people at Super Bowl parties would have been at the beach, and we would be right on top of one another. I wonder if the nearby hotel is going to bring in more sand, or does sand just eventually return on

Indian Surrogate Mothers Grow In Popularity
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Like most people, I have be disturbed by 'outsourcing' and wondered where it's going to end. Then yesterday I read a news article at MSNBC online titled, "Rent-a-womb trend fuels debate". Hold it just one moment! Aren't we going a bit too far with this outsourcing when we rent a woman's womb to carry babies? This reminded me of a sci fi movie I saw last year. From this article, a quote: "We must not promote surrogacy as a trade." I couldn't agree more.At the same time I empathize and understand with childless couples faced with a huge surrogate expense! Compare the price (quoted in the above article) of $50,000 compared to $10-12,000. Reading the article is heartbreaking because the Indian women badly need the money. Their bodies are being used, and because of the cultural attitudes towards sex and procreation, these women lie about the baby they are carrying to their family and friends. This can't be promote wellbeing for the baby they are carrying. It has been documented that

Thirteen Hawaiian Things
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Today I'm going to share with you Thirteen Things about Hawaii. The first four come from The Hawaii Directory. You can find their link on my sidebar if you want to look again for these first four. They're a great resource for Hawaiian information.1. Hawaii Word Of The Day: lanai meaning porch or veranda2. Hawaii Phrase Of The Day: E waiho i ko kaua mau lole lepo i ka mikini holoi3. Hawaii Fact of The Day: The Big Island is twice the size of all the other Hawaii Island combined.4. Hawaii Website Of The Day: Hale Kai, a Hawaiian Bed & Breakfast5. Hawaii temperature Of The Day: (taken from the thermometer outside by door): 80 degrees!6. Hawaii Photo Of The Day: Taken by me!I took this photo many years ago from a hiking trail in the Polipoli Forest. You are looking at the peak of Mauna Kea on the Big Island. This island lies across a deep channel, but the view from the top of Polipoli is amazing. Sadly over 2000 acres of this gorgeous forest was destroyed in the recent forest fire in th

It's My Birthday and I'll Do It My Way
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Yesterday was my partner's birthday which we celebrated HIS style which means Very Low Key! He absolutely didn't want a party, a cake, or any fuss. He's the kind of person who makes it really easy on your wallet because he always says, "Don't waste your money on me. I have everything I need. All I want is for everyone to be happy and healthy." So we went out to eat (Thai food), saw a movie (The Queen), and chilled. We gave him some small gifts, and he was pleased. He doesn't like big parties or lots of friends bringing him gifts. He doesn't want to make a big deal about his birthday or call attention to it in any way. I've succeeded on numerous occasions with surprise parties. He's never been happy with them! This year he made a good haul with really great gifts arriving via mail before his birthday, and then on his birthday, we received a surprise knock on the door and friends had made him the most delicious orange cake with a homemade, light & fluffy, non-sugary frosting. Flying Around Maui
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The winter months are the months when snowbirds (tourists) bring more traffic to the roadways of Maui, but no one can complain too much as the traffic here is way more manageable than the traffic in parts of Kauai or the freeways of Oahu. However, there are times I dream of zipping around the island with no traffic. And then I saw a video with the way to make my dream come true and to many people's prayers when they're stuck in traffic: a flying motorcycle patented by a Texas man. Click here for the video. The cost of these sky motorcycles isn't prohibitive--they are supposedly safe---and you can fold the whole thing up! Sweet! Production is supposed to begin this year. We are entering the world of the "Jetsons" one invention at a time.Technorati Tags:flying motorcycle, patent, highway traffic, YouTube

A Valentine's Day Love Letter To You
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Sad to say but true--my partner and I can't think of anything outrageously unique and special to celebrate Valentine 's Day that we don't already do. Of course, we will exchange the 'sweetness', but we do that all the time. Ditto for cards and gifts. Ditto for communicating love with beloveds both near and far, beaches, movies, good food & restaurants, beautiful sunsets, warm waters, etc. Our lives overflow with blessings for which we are extremely grateful! As I searched for something special to do for tomorrow, I remembered YOU! So I'm posting tonight, the day before Valentine's Day. I know most of you are already awake and moving through your day before we awaken here in the Hawaiian Islands.I want to express my love and gratitude for those who read my blogs! I am grateful for your readership-- even if you don't have the time to leave a comment. I am grateful for all my loving fellow bloggers I've met online since I dived into blogging with such passion this past year. I am

Valentine's Day With Warmth
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Photo: Charles PfeilI emailed and spoke with friends and family today on the Mainland who are experiencing more snowfall, freezing weather, and one of the worst winters on record. Some of these friends are stuck in their homes. These conversations reminded me why I love Maui so much: the warm weather! I get cold when the temperature drops down to 60 degrees now! Actually, the temperature at this time of the year is nearly perfect for this Goldilocks--not too hot, not too cold.Of course, most people stuck in the harsh winter weather are dreaming of a vacation to our Islands or some other warm, sunny place right now. Who could blame them? Apparently lots of folks had this idea and have acted on it as the Island is super busy right now. The pale snowbirds have flocked here. They are easily recognizable.Technorati Tags:snow, cold weather, temperature, warm weather

Thirteen Card Readings For The Day
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Through the years, I have accumulated many oracle/divination card decks, runes, and other such tools either through my own purchase or gifted by others. Even though I don't utilize these tools to receive insights and answers everyday, I treasure their wisdom. In general, I prefer to seek my answers by going within, but when I do pull a card or make a spread, I pay attention to the message. There are zero accidents. I thought it'd be fun to share some of the highlights from my decks and messages with you today.1. The Har-money Deck Tip: you can pick one online through the link! Here's mine:"I Am Powerfully Silent. When you tell others of the dreams that are closest to your heart, it dissipates your energy. Stay silent and inwardly focused and your secrets will become magic in motion.""2. "Truth...tell the truth. Integrity is the key to living an authentic life." The truth is I lost the box cover, and now I don't know who to credit these gorgeous cards.3. Quite a few years ago I had

Will biodiesel be the solution to Maui's energy needs?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Photo: Charles PfeilThe front page article on the February 18th Sunday Maui News couldn't be missed because of the giant headline which read, "$61 million project a start to ending use of petroleum". With our ridiculously high gas prices on Maui, who wouldn't be reading this announcement?! This new project scheduled to begin in 2009, a collaboration between Hawaiian Electric Co. and BlueEarth Biofuels LLC, has impressive intentions: "While MECO President Ed Reinhardt said the goal is to get all of the company's Maalaea generators off petroleum, Mayor Charmaine Tavares noted her call at her inauguration to diversify the county's economy."The BlueEarth plan is to burn imported palm oil, but there are other potential crops which could be used for fuel: jatropha trees, kukui, algae, flax, castor beans, jojoba, soybeans, rapeseed, sunflower seeds, and coconut. Pacific Biodiesel has been refining alternative fuel on Maui for many years, and in another article in the Maui News, Kelly Ki

Happy Chinese New Year of the Pig
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Chinese New Year is BIG on Maui as we have many Orientals living here, and Chinese New Year events are taking place all over the Island. Our family always participates by placing dollars in little red envelopes-- then feeding these envelopes into the mouth of the undulating, dancing dragon made of silk, paper, and bamboo. This ritual ensures good fortune for the coming year so the tradition goes. 2007 is the GOLDEN FIRE PIG year. Here are some great links and articles if you would like to learn more about Chinese New Year:Fire PigChinese New Year--WikiChinese New Year

A Tribute To My Daughter A Day After Her Birthday
1970-01-01 00:59:59
It was my beloved daughter's birthday yesterday, a very big day for me. She is one of my heroes! When she was a week old, she contracted spinal meningitis, and the doctors didn't give my husband and me ANY hope that she would survive--and should she survive by a miracle, she would most likely be a "vegetable" for the rest of her life. Thank Goodness doctors aren't always right! These very same doctors eventually concurred she was a "miracle baby", and she has not only survived through the years--she has thrived! I Thank God every day of my life for allowing her to be in my life. Genvieve has grown healthy, loving, kind, SMART, wise, astute, beautiful both inside and out, responsible, giving, and is a BRIGHT LIGHT to all who know her. Being a Mother to her has been hands down the BEST thing that has ever happened to me!Talk about being a child and animal magnet! It never ceases to amaze me how babies and children gravitate to her. Same thing for animals! They make a dash for her! She

Environmental Leaders Series On Maui
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Artwork courtesy of Love Peace HappinessLast week Robert F. Kennedy Jr. launched a series of lectures about climate change here on Maui. Unfortunately, we had other plans, and we missed his presentation. The next environmental advocate to speak will be David Suzuki, the famous environmental activist and host of the award-winning television series "The Nature of Things." He will speak at the MACC on March 14th, and this time we'll be in the audience. If you'd like to know more about him, here's the link to his organization.Other speakers in the series will be James Howard Kunstler, Terry Tamminen, and Christine Ervin. And here's the link to a funny YouTube video with Robert F. Where's OUR Momma?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I couldn't resist the urge to title this post "Where's OUR Momma ?" to accompany the cute photos of a little girl running around searching for her Momma after leaving the ocean. She had that LOST look. Right after snapping these photos, she happily found her Momma. So not to worry! I could identify with this wee one because I've been feeling a whole lot lost myself, and I could use some comforting by a Mother. I think we ALL can identify.Call it information overload... the lightning speed of these changing times... the foreboding sense something big is happening (perhaps war escalation).... the immense climate changes...the increasingly dire, crazy news reports...or maybe it's a combination of ALL of these mentioned.Everyone is seeking solutions. We are turning towards our leaders and wisdom keepers to show us the way and give us guidance. We are turning within to commune with the 'Presence' by whatever name we call it. We are looking for reassurance that ALL WILL BE WELL. We a

Leon Russell Rocks Maui In Concert at the MACC
2007-03-03 02:03:00
We rocked out last evening with rock 'n roll icon Leon Russell and his band at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. The house was packed, and people couldn't stay seated--they were dancing in the aisles. This is the first time we've caught his act live. My partner has been enjoying Russell's latest Angels In Disguise CD, but a CD is no match for a live performance. Watching the audience go nuts to the music was way too much fun! The mild-mannered security guards had their hands full with people flying through the air in ballet leaps down the center aisles. The right front side aisle near our seats was packed with bouncing, dancing bodies.Russell sang some of his famous songs: "Hummingbird" and "A Song For You" and finished with a rousing Jerry Lee Lewis anthem, "Great Balls Of Fire". For those that don't know this rock legend, Russell has played on, produced, and arranged some of the most successful rock and roll records, and he's been performing since he was just a young boy.
