Joomla Multisite Resync Users
2007-01-03 22:21:08
So I have been writing my own resync users on multisites for joomla. It does work sorta.... This is currently the way it works for us here at Northern Oracle. The user who wants to register is redirected to the main site's comprofile registration. I have a cron script which rewrites the jos_users and jos_comprofile tables to the subdomain sites. Pretty simple eh? Well, there is a few draw backs, first of all I cann't find the table within joomla that sets up the back end manager for the user tables, hence when an admin goes into a back on the sub sites, he doesn't see the new users. Second problem is that the users are still being directed to edit their profiles within the sub site, I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, it would be posiable for a user to have multiple profiles for each subdomain, currently I'm leaving it as it is, mainly because I tired and it's the day after xmas and I need sleep (to much wine) I am planning to remove the profile link within the sub s

Mutual Aid Dot Org
2006-12-19 03:37:29
"mutualaid.org is a collective that provides technology services to the radical and progressive communities." - quote Mutual Aid is much more then that. It plays host to SOA Watch an independent organization that seeks to close the US Army School of the Americas, DC Indymedia, Federation of Revolutionary Anarchist Collectives, prisonradio.org, the list goes on and on. Many email lists are hosted by Mutual Aid as well, which include a Anarchist Black Cross support group, A.R.A. Prisoner Support Working Group, DC Critical Mass, and Food not Bombs (Ottawa, Canada) to name just a few. Help them out at MutualAid.org

ACK I MESSED IT UP
2006-12-11 06:21:44
Ok, sorry folks but once again I messed up. It turns out that the resync I am using for the users on the subdomains has a bug in it. All the joomla based subdomains.... http://art.northernoracle.org art fixed:12/11/06 http://seed.northernoracle.org http://main.northernoracle.org http://wcws.northernoracle.org http://software.northernoracle.org http://wolfepack.northernoracle.org .... have to be redone. The others are fine btw. I did take off http://webmail.northernoracle.org before all this because although you can see and delete your email you could not reply or send email, and I needed to alter the way I did the ssl anyway. (The servers are still up btw just use your normal client.) update:12/11/06 http://email.northernoracle.org Now up! The secure site was not effected as users are not shared there it is only for admins. In order to avoid this in the future.... http://wiki.northernoracle.org/tiki-index.php?page=SUBDOMAIN_HOWTO

Minor Update...

As you can see I've created a new css for the blog site. It looks a bit different on Internet Explorer, but litterally is better with firefox. (click the link in the side bar to install firefox for windows.) Let me know what you think of it. Wolfe

MySql Sync, or lack thereof
2006-11-30 17:40:47
I spent most of the day yesturday trying to tweak the code in a variety of mysql programs and scripts. Because Maxdb uses Sun's java system, it totally sucks, I've never been able to get anything those boozo's make to work on debian. (Other javas are fine for the record) The joomla component from elearning doesn't work either. Mind you the one I have is out of date, and their new one for syncing users looks good, but... $55 for an addon to an open source cms? hmmmmm doesn't that break the gpl rules? So I started writing my own, surprisingly easier then I thought, it will be released in alpha on software.northernoracle.org and yes it will be open source. I still have some legal issues to deal with on a personal level before I go after all the issues with wcws, but for those that are interested in getting involved in the project I suggest you check out http://www.wildernesscommitteevictoria.org/campaigns_oil.php since the whole oil Moratorium on the bc coast is a major connectio

Slowly coming back together
2006-11-26 06:48:34
I know the last year I was a little disorganized with not only the site, but also with projects. I had to take a step back and look things over and figure out what to do. One of the key issues had to do with the west coast water survey, it was a huge project that I was being to feel was out of my reach, but mostly due to other things that were happening on a more personal front. As some of you may know, my wife and I moved to BC from Ontario to start down a path which would lead to creating a seed commune of sorts, it was in a small way connected to the rainbow family of living light. The idea was simple, create a commune like system, a place people could call home, that combined the best things we learned while living as caravaners on the road (we traveled for almost 14 years) and help people start their own seeds. Our planning had to do with gettting cheap land, and that ment no house on the property, so we started paying off a mobile home first, and with only a few months to go in

Shutup and post:
2007-01-11 04:46:24
I have to admit that I am not the world's biggest country music fan, in fact although I will dabble into any kind of music, unless it is Bach, Mozart, or something from the late 60's or early 70's I don't buy it, and rarely listen to it. My radio choice is the local co-op radio which plays international music most of the time, and I prefer the talk shows at that. My seventeen year old son and his friend invited me to watch documentary at the nearby theater called “Shutup and Sing”, I almost turned them down when I found out it was about a country music group. I ended up going to see it anyway. There are few things in the world that I can not tolerate, I consider myself fair, honest, and open minded. I am more then willing to admit that I can not tolerate racists, sexists, homophobia, and beliefs which condemn instead of uplift. When it comes to country music, I am guilty of stereotyping. My wife has always enjoyed country music, she hasn't had much time listening t

Microsoft cheats Wikipedia
2007-01-24 06:32:09
I must admit that I do not use Wikipedia as much as I should. Primarily I use Wikipedia as a source to find further links while researching one topic or another. It's a method to find the information I am looking for from third parties, I do not often use it as a source itself. Sine Wikipedia is open-source document standard I have edited pages within it from time to time when I notice an error, omission, or trolling. Microsoft doesn't seem to understand the concept of free information, Open Office XML although under BSD has it's problems. First and foremost is the copyright retention used by the BSD, that all redistributions of source code must retain the original copyright notice, meaning legally, that work others do within a document or source code under those terms are immediately property of the original author/s. No wonder Microsoft like the idea of being a rival of any Open Source standard. Microsoft has even try to buy it's version of the way things should be viewed on W

Ubuntu verses Debian (Part 1)
2007-01-26 22:23:42
Well I have made the switch to Ubuntu from Debian . For those of you who have no clue let me give you a little recap. Both Debain and Ubuntu are Linux operating systems, I have tried out Redhat, Fedora Core, Dragon Linux, Mandrake, and even Cygwin. I left Redhat for Fedora Core because they stopped supporting it in favour of FC3, so I switched to that not out of choice, but because I was forced to. FC3 had it's problems, but for the most part I didn't like an operating system that pretended to be a windows clone. Redhat/Fedora are good for those who are trying to make the switch to linux, but once you want to start really using the power of linux, you leave it behind. Debian is by far the best OS for geeks, I still have two boxes that run on it. But in order to tweek debian for the paranoid geek like myself you really need an OS that tries to be as paranoid as you are. Ubuntu started out as an OS for the security culture crowd, or at least the projects connected with Ubuntu did. Th

Ubuntu verses Debian (Part 2)
2007-01-28 20:56:02
Well that didn't last long. I took the main computer back to debian today. Main reason, ubuntu is slow as hell and it was getting really annoying, I couldn't get the aspell to install right, and to be honest without a spell checker I'd starve. I did alter two things with debian this time, first i upgraded my kernel before I did anything else, this seems to avoided an error I was getting with that. And second I installed stunnelright off the hop so I could use kopete on irc below port 1024, BTW use the deb sources from us.debian.org not debian.org for stunnel, it laggs out. So on my wish list for debian, the replacement of 'root' and defaulting to sudo that ubuntu does, I still think that's a major plus for ubuntu. Wish lists for Ubuntu ? well, speed up the kernel and everything else for one, include aspell within the openoffice distro, and make the gdm templates more compatiable, a bios editor would be nice too. Jack Layton and ATM Fees Whoops
2007-01-29 17:45:10
Jack Layton of the NDP has launched a campaign against ATM fees by hoping to change some details in the Bank Act. Jack, it's a good idea, to bad it isn't yours. I've noticed that this morning on Global News you were saying that Toronto Domain Bank doesn't charge for the same service that they do in Canada when you use it in the USofA, nor do banks charge for taking out your own money at an ATM in Europe. You forgot one Jack, Credit Unions here. The NDP claims to have taken up the cause 'fairness for all' but have ignore things which actually help create a fairness for all in a real way. Unions no longer support the NDP by automatic member donations, and the real reason for this is that the unions, the backbone of fair wages in Canada, don't feel their interests are represented by the NDP anymore, otherwise the changes that took place in regards to supporting the NDP via a union paycheck never would have happened. Jack, if your really wanting to help people that are on a fix

If you think Canada is a good place, think again.
2007-01-30 20:48:45
It is times like this that I get tempted to move to Italy, or back to France. Mr. Justice Shawn Smith of the Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench has totally ignored common sence. It appears that if you are a father in Canada , you simply have no rights. The 34-year-old biological father, has lost his right to raise his child, because, now get this, family friends of the mother are 'better'. There is no mention of the father being a criminal, a drug addict, abusive, or neglectful. All that is mentioned is that he wants to raise his child, he never gave up custody, and DNA tests confirm he is in fact the father. He cann't even visit his child for a year, so that the foster parents can 'bond' with the nine-month old child. University of Saskatchewan lecturer Greg Walen says the case is consistent with provincial law and trends. Which means this is happening all the time. The child's mother is now under threat to be investigated for child trafficing, dam good idea IMHO. But that i

Due to Global Warming
2007-02-02 08:09:33
As I write this a report by 500 scientists is being released about the issue global warming. There has already been a pre-release tidbit about the report, that being that there is likely a 90% chance that global warming is not only real, but caused by humans. Take note of that, because those 500 scientists include the nay-sayers. Hear are a few predictions I have about Global Warming: 1.Grapes of Wrath: The next few years will result in two events regarding my glass of wine. California wines will disappear off the market completely, as will Canada's Ice Wines. Merlots will last longer, but only the real ones from Europe. (yeah, I'm picky about good wine) The second set of events that will happen in the price for green grapes, seedless grapes, and the darker varieties, the price will triple within five years, at the local grocery. Ouch. 2.The Three Bears Polar bears are already in pickle, but have you thought of the rest of the bears? In Northern Spain, they simply aren't taking

I get to have some fun. There are three types of gifts that really make me jump up and take notice. First, there is the whole wolf thing, I have a wolf coffee cup, t-shirts with wolves on them, and about a million wolves done in cross-stitch by my wife. I collect anything to do with them, it is what I get for xmas, birthdays, etc, and am very happy with this. The second thing that I like getting are non-fiction books, anything non-fiction, history, politics, and many many how-to's fill my attic walls where my desk sits as I write this, I guess it comes with the territory of writing reports, and doing research, always nice to have that book you need right here at hand, rather then running downtown to the library. Raw research, and reports are by far the best gift I get. I went downtown yesterday to attend a FreeGeek meeting, and ended up having to leave a tad bit early to help out some friends. I knew the Green Party was moving almost next door from Spartacus Books, where we were ha

I get target fixated. If I need to find the answer to a question, I hunt it down ruthlessly. I simply don't stop till I know what the whole answer is. I think this is what started my book collection. I enjoy co-op radio (www.coopradio.org), but I must confess that it isn't the radio station I listen to via my alarm clock. I have a crappy radio alarm, and haven't found one at the thrift store yet that can get co-op like my stereo in the living room, (or via the Internet). So when I set up the alarm clock I choose the channel closest to co-op I could get, hoping to fine tune it later. Well, it turns out this channel (which I won't name, partly due to not wanting to advertise them) has an “Impossible Question” every morning. The object is, they ask a question, and callers try to phone in the correct answer to get a prize. The result for me is that I can not fall back to sleep because I need to know the answer. But awhile ago I noticed the question being asked were useles
