4 More & Counting! 2008-04-08 06:26:00 Four Airlines in the past 2 weeks have announced they are going tits up and shutting down their operations. Aloha Airlines, Skybus and ATA Airlines have all shut down operations in the last two weeks. Champion Air will cease operations on May 31st, 2008. Aloha had 3500 employees and started operations in 1946. Skybus was a low cost airline based in Columbus Ohio which flew to 15 cities with 450 employees. ATA was based in Indianapolis and had been flying for 35 years, employing 2230 people. Champion Air was based in Minnesota and had 550 employees flying 14 old 727's. With oil over $100 a barrel none of these or any other airline had budgeted for these kind of prices. Most of the American public hasn't either. Unfortunately I think this is just the beginning of Airlines going belly up, Read more:Counting
Just like dogs we are! 2008-04-11 07:30:00 I just got back from a 2 day trip yesterday with a layover in Kansas City. All the flights were full due to the American Airlines debacle. But the point of this story is how crew members from to different airlines act among each other. It is hilarious and it always happens. When we arrived for our layover in Kansas City we loaded up in the hotel van and the driver said we had to stop at the other terminal to pick up a United Airlines crew. So we proceeded over there to pick them up. We pulled up and there was 1 male and 2 female flight attendants, and as the van stopped their and our eyes locked on each other with everyone giving everyone the once or twice over. It is like when dogs meet up on the street, you know the way they circle and sniff each other and either start snarling or p

Mergers and Bankrupt Airlines 2008-04-16 06:07:00 Delta and Northwest announced merger plans yesterday and last week Frontier Airlines
files for bankruptcy protection. You can bet there will be more merger announcements to follow shortly following the Delta/Northwest deal. The media keeps reporting that fare increases will likely result. Fares need to increase, after every major carrier has stuck their hands into the pockets of their employees and with oil prices at a record high, how else are they going to stay in business? It is still cheaper to fly than it is to drive across country. Last I checked Ford or any other auto maker is not going to subsidize anyones trip, so why should the airlines? Frankly I am sick of the public expecting to fly roundtrip coast to coast for $200. Flights are full and no one is making a profit? WTF? I don' Read more:Bankrupt

Singing the Delta blues by Garrison Keillor 2008-04-18 07:30:00 This article was written by Garrison
Keillor of the International Herald Tribune on April 16, 2008. Great article and well written.I flew to New York on the day spring arrived and all along 90th Street a lovely blue flower called Pushkinia blossomed which is named for the poet who, according to Russians, cannot be translated into English, but Tchaikovsky made a gorgeous opera of “Eugene Onegin,” which is some consolation, and then there is the flower.I flew on Northwest Airlines, which now, like Pushkin, will vanish into the earth, devoured by Delta
, and this makes me a little sad. Not sad enough to write an opera but enough to write a column. The company used to be called Northwest Orient and was founded in Minneapolis in 1926 to carry mail to Chicago. I used to live in a house in St. Read more:Singing

The Funk Brothers 2008-04-26 07:41:00 Last night I watched an HBO documentary called "Standing in the Shadows of Motown-The Funk Brothers
". It was about the Motown house musicians known as the Funk Brothers. It was an excellent documentary. Below is a little bit about the history of them.As Motown's studio band, the Funk Brothers kept those unforgettable grooves bubbling up from the basement at Hitsville USA.Their music fueled the careers of The Temptations, The Supremes, The Miracles, the Four Tops, Gladys Knight and The Pips, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Mary Wells and others from the time the company started in the late 1950s until it left Detroit for California in 1973. Delta's new coach seats 2008-04-29 07:16:00 Delta "Cozy Suite" Seats Make Economy Class Semi-TolerableIt may not be as fancy as first class accommodations, but Delta's new "Cozy Suite" seats promise to make economy class seating less of a hellish, crippling nightmare. The major feature of the design is a staggered layout that increases privacy while simultaneously creating a space for weary travelers to rest their heads. It also allows passengers to enjoy 31-inches of leg room (2-inches better than the competition) and the ability to recline without disturbing the person behind them.Delta is planning on installing the Cozy Suite in its Boeing 777 and 767 economy class aircraft by 2010. Plus, the impending merger between Delta and Northwest could mean that travelers loyal to the latter company might reap the benefits of these new sea Read more:Delta
