Hobby Lobby Stores Recall Halloween-Themed Baskets
2007-11-16 13:38:00
THE GHOST OF HALLOWEEN PASTIsn't it spooky how lead paint just keeps showing up in toys? Wouldn't you think that even the most mercenary manufacturer would have figured out that it's not really going to save money if no one buys their products or their products get recalled?Well, apparently not, because here's another recalled item: a Halloween basket that's probably on sale at your local dollar store for fifty cents. I know that when I went to the drugstore yesterday, there were still baskets of halloween candy for half price. (Not that I'd buy it. I worked in a candy factory as a teenager and know when they make the Halloween candy. Hint: I was on my Spring Break from school when I packed that candy corn.)So check your closets and toyboxes and if you have this, bring it back to the store for a refund. Here's the information from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.Hobby Lobby Stores Recall Halloween-Themed Baskets Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Toy Recalls: Helpful Links
2007-11-15 10:41:00
As I'm sure you know, I'm not the Lone Ranger when it comes to trying to protect kids from unsafe products. There are so many concerned, compassionate, involved bloggers out there who are doing their best to get the word out about unsafe products and practices that can hurt families and children. I've been surfing lately and here's what I've found.Kathy over at SafeMama started her blog to help other parents find the information it took her so many hours to put together. She has a two yr old son and was concerned about the same things that other parents of toddlers are concerned about, like bisphenol-A in his sippy cups or lead paint on his toys. She's done lots of research and now offers a slew of information including links to safe cleaning products, local food resources, safe baby products and much more. Stop by and tell her Lill sent you.At RecalledToyAlert, you can scan the recall list, search for a specific toy and sign up to get new alerts by email. I signed up added their

2007-11-13 18:49:00
W.A.T.C.H which stands for World Against Toys Causing Harm, Inc has just released their 10 Worst Toy List for 2007. Topping the list is the Go Diego Go Animal Rescue Boat which has lead paint. Also on the list are Sticky Stones, which are magnetized iron ore that can cause intestinal injury or death if more than one is swallowed. W.A.T.C.H. reports that - incredibly - although this is mentioned on retail store packaging, it isn't on the packaging for internet sales. The rest of the list includes:A spinning dagger and a sword that extends with the push of a button both of which can cause eye and other impact injuries (Jack Sparrow's Spinning Dagger and Spiderman 3 New Goblin Sword)A doll with a pacifier that is easily detached and doesn't pass the choke tube test for its intended age group (My Little Baby Born)A lamp that plugs in rather than using batteries (Dora the Explorer Lamp), which is a hazard because the lamp's Dora figure is toy-like and invites small children to play wi

Tainted Toys Still On Shelves!
2007-11-13 14:49:00
I guess I'm gullible, because I assumed that once a toy was recalled, it disappeared from store shelves. Oh sure, I realize that there are some small mom-and-pop stores in Far Hokum, Maine or Littleknown, Nebraska that haven't gotten the word, but everyone else knows about the recalls, right? Wrong.According to MarkMonitor, an online firm that tracks brand-fraud and phishing attacks on the Net and also offers services to protect companies from brand hijacking: 30% of online auctions for toy brands that have experienced recalls continue to sell products after they have been recalled for lead paint or loose small parts. 83% of auction listings selling recalled toys ship from the U.S., more than all other countries combined. The United Kingdom is the second largest at 6%. 8% of business-to-business exchange site listings for toy brands that have experienced recalls continue to sell products after they have been recalled. Dollar General Sunglasses, Curious George,BassettBaby Cribs Recalled
2007-11-08 23:39:00
Another day, another quarter of a million toys recalled. This time, it's sunglasses and plush monkeys with lead paint issues and a crib that can strangle your baby or trap a hand or foot. This advertisement for co-sleeping costs $500 at Babys R Us Stores. (Sorry I don't have the font with a backward facing R.)Here are the recalls:Dollar General sold yellow (and it's only the yellow) sunglasses with China printed on the left hand side. The words Fashion Sunglasses and Time to Play Everyday are printed on a red tag that hangs from the glasses. The UPC is 400007860896. If you have a pair of these, bring them back to Dollar General for a refund.Marvel Toys manufactured the Curious George plush monkeys. It's the plastic face and hat that contain the lead paint. They were sold through retail stores all over the country. Aquadots Recall and More Toy Recalls
2007-11-08 07:17:00
This is really scary stuff! Aquadots are little beads that stick together when sprayed with water. I bought some in a kit and put them away a few months ago, because my daughter is always doing little crafts and I like to surprise her with new kits every once in awhile. Luckily for her, we've been very busy over the last few months with other things, so I planned to give her the Aquadots next week, after things calmed down. Also luckily for her but not for several other children, the problem surfaced before I got them out of the box.Two children who ingested the little beads went into comas. Both have recovered, but who knows what permanent damage they've sustained. The drug which seems to be involved can cause damage down the line, not just when it's taken initially. It's the same drug that unscrupulous guys sneak into unsuspecting date's drinks so they can take advantage of them when the women lose consciousness. Seizures, nervous system damage and other neurological disorders h

The Calm Before the Storm
2007-11-03 09:44:00
Here in Maine, we're supposed to be hit with an extratropical storm this afternoon with wind gusts of over 70 mph. We've taken in the lawn furniture, filled the catbox so the cats won't get blown into the next town and stocked up on bread and toilet paper. We have a generator which runs on propane from a tank that can keep it going for over a week, so we're not too worried about the inevitable power outages, except that our ISDN line will go out so we'll be offline for awhile. Before then, here are a couple of announcements from our sponsors:You'll want to check out My Wooden Toy's Christmas List. Douglas has chosen stocking fillers, wooden toys for boys and girls and the newest arrivals from the top companies in the toy world. Best of all, to thank their customers, many of these toys are on special. Douglas says that their orders have doubled and many customers outside of Australia have discovered the quality and safety of their toys, so international orders have increased. If y

Phthalate-Free Teethers? We've Got 'Em
2007-10-24 08:44:00
Ever since I started this safe toy blog, I've gotten email from people asking me questions like I'm a toy maven or something. True, I do a lot of research almost daily on what's going on in the toy recall department. But a maven I'm not. That said, not being an expert has never kept me from having opinions or giving advice, so here are some questions I've been asked recently with my answers. Please remember that I'm not an authority on safe toys - just a mom who's trying to combine business with helping other parents and grandparents choose the best toys for the kids in their lives. The bottom line - and there always is one - is that you have to use your own judgment. Research, read, talk to other people and ponder a bit before you buy anything from toys to toothpaste.First Question: Where can I find phthalate-free teethers? (More about phthalates in this article)Actually, that was my question too when I went to buy a shower gift for a friend's new baby. I didn't want to poiso

Recall on Toy Skull Pails
2007-10-19 10:44:00
Does anyone else find it ironic that there's a recall on toy skull pails? Of course, there's only lead paint on the outside, so probably the candy inside won't poison kids. On the other hand, like my black lab, some kids chew on everything so better safe than sorry. If you'd like an alternative to toys like these, peruse the Safe Toy List in the right sidebar. For Halloween, birthdays, a new baby or baby shower gift, Hannukah, Christmas or just because you feel like buying your kid something, it's better to buy from companies that care about kids.Me, I'm browsing at the moment, so that I'll have a clue what my kids are talking about when they start telling me what's on their holiday list. That way, whether they pick out the hottest toy or some obscure thing that is only made on Walpurgisnacht in a small Bavarian village, I'll know where to find it. Which brings me to something that all this talk of toys and recalls has me thinking about lately. How much is too much when it co

Cut Down On Holiday Spending Without Looking Cheap
2007-10-14 09:31:00
No one wants to look like a grinch, but most of us reach a point in our holiday or birthday shopping where we realize that we're going to spend more than we want to if we get everything on our list. What to do... If you're a parent, you have two options: ramp down on the number and/or the cost of the gifts you get your loved ones or get everything and live on that recalled dog food you didn't really throw out but hid behind the furnace. It's probably only toxic to dogs, right?Well, if you don't have a dog and have to go with the first option, I have some suggestions for really nifty toys and gifts that won't bust your budget. Believe me, I know from making Christmas clubs stretch to cover more family members than I have chin hairs. At one time, what with step-siblings, foster siblings, bio-siblings and all of their kids, I was aunt to over thirty little darlings, all of whom presented me with their list of demands pwecious widdle wists, uh, lists by Thanksgiving. Get on Track With These Train Sets
2007-10-13 14:23:00
I've enabled comments, because I'm getting them by email anyway. One of my faithful readers from News From Hawkhill Acres asked me how to find a train set for her four yr old that's compatible with one that was recalled for lead paint. I avoided the impulse to say "How the heck would I know? I have a teenager and a 10 yr old diva" and did some research. Here's the result: It's the Name Train Town Set from Heirloom Wooden Toys. This set includes:31 pieces of track; vehicles including a school bus, people car (2), fire truck, tow truck, police car, taxi cab, rescue car, train engine, passenger cars (2), caboose, airplane, racer, tractor, tugboat. Where Can I Find Safe Toys?
2007-10-07 11:45:00
Product safety recalls are announced everyday. It's scary to realize that some of the objects we take for granted as being safe: toys, clothing, tools, dishes, furniture, vehicles, makeup and personal grooming products are dangerous. It's particularly troubling when we don't find out that they're unsafe until weeks or even months after we've bought them. As we watch our toddler playing with a brightly colored educational toy, do we know if the paint contains lead or if one of the little parts will detach and choke our beloved child, maybe when we've gone into another room for a moment? If a toy is made in another country and not certified by a reputable agency, there's no assurance that the paint was non-toxic and no guarantee that it would pass United States safety standards. Of course, this applies to all kinds of products from baby strollers to treadmills. True, the US government tests a certain number of imports, but it's only a tiny fraction of the millions of items that e

Toy Recalls 11/21/07
2007-11-21 11:32:00
We have two of these items, a charm bracelet and a keyring. I wonder how many of the breastfeeding moms I know have a Boppy Pillow. I find it particularly sickening that something that a nursing mother uses while nursing her baby is contaminated with lead and a choking hazard for the baby. What if the zipper pull detaches and a baby swallows it? Will she die from lead poisoning before anyone realizes what's happening? This is simply inexcusable. How many more of these recalls will we have before the importers, manufacturers and consumer safety protection agencies put a stop to it?Friday will be Black Friday, indeed, if you have any of these toys on your list and don't remove them. Here's a brief summary of the recalled products. There is good news and bad news today on the safe toy front. First the bad news. There have been two recalls today. They are Bell Racing Helmet Collectibles and the Stokke Xpro Stroller. Of course, the stroller isn't a toy, but it's definitely a necessity if you have a baby or toddler, so it's something you should know about. Please go to the CPSC website and read all about these recalls. The good news is that there are some good things happening at several of the companies on our safe toy list. This is from an email I received tonight.:Your immediate action can help convince CBS to swiftly recall a toxic toy that containsdeadly asbestos but that is being sold nationwide this holiday season. Although ADAO announcedthe test results more than two weeks ago, on November 28, the toy -- made in China-- remains on toy shelves across the country and is still available online.
