Santa Hits the West Bank at Oakwood Center
2007-11-20 11:40:23
As a little girl, I loved putting on my Christmas dress, pulling up my tights, strapping on my shiny new patent leather Mary Janes and standing in the line to visit Santa Claus.  While my younger sister was terrified (and cried every year) I couldn't wait to jump up on his lap and whisper in his ear all of the things I was longing to find under the tree on Christmas morning.  Oh, please...I want a Barbie...and some roller skates...and a new bike...the list went on and on. It brings back so many memories to look at those old photographs that Mom had to order....we were so impatient waiting for them to arrive in the mail.  Did we smile?  Were the tears still in my sister's eyes?   Flash forward...in 2007 you can get your digital photos with Santa printed while you wait and even pick up a CD of your pictures that you can share with your family and friends across town or across the country the same day.  Are you ready for this year'

Top 5 Tips for Creating a Home Office
2007-11-18 18:44:07
With the holidays fast approaching, the electronics stores will be hustling and bustling, churning out TVs, DVDs, digital cameras and laptops.  Personal electronics are on the wish list for everyone from kids to grandparents.  Once you have all of those shiny, new toys where do you put them and how will you use them?  I have a home office that I used to spend most of my time in.  Computer, printer, scanner, fax...all of the tools of the West Bank real estate trade.  I painted it a warm, chocolate brown color and installed French doors, a new fan and window blinds.  It was a wonderful space.  Slowly, but surely, the rest of the family begin creeping in on "my space".  First it was my husband and his karaoke computer.  Then it was the kids when we purchased a separate computer for them.  The older kids have moved out, but apparently not on, since they were always in the house checking email.  Finally, in defeat, I relo

How To Take The Mystery Out Of Selling Your Home
2007-11-16 11:28:29
I had a wonderful travel opportunity this month and made a short, whirlwind visit to London, England.  What a beautiful city!  Museums, historic churches, the Thames, the Tower of London, Big Ben and more.  While there, we took a coach (bus) tour of Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and the town of Bath, which I would highly recommend to anyone visiting.    Stonehenge is an incredible sight to see.  Surrounded by the English countryside, the stones rise up against a backdrop of pasture and sky.  There are many theories about the origination of the monument.  Was it a place of worship? A temple?  A guide for astronomy?  As we walked the path circling the stones, I could hear other visitors chatting about the origins.  What was this space used for?  Why did they put that particular stone there?  Without accurate historical records, we are left to wonder "What were they thinking?"  &n

West Bank Elections - November 17, 2007

My father always told me, "I don't care who you vote for, as long as you vote".  Wise words, indeed.  Runoff elections in Louisiana are notorious for low voter turn out.  Don't let that happen this week...let your voice be heard and cast your ballots on Saturday.   Statewide election:Attorney General Jefferson Parish elections:Sheriff24th Judicial District Court, Division LState SenateState Representative Orleans Parish elections:City Council, At LargeJudge, Criminal District Court, Section AState SenateState Representative We all have a responsibility to our parishes, cities and state to get out and VOTE!  Many voting locations have changed in the last 2 years.  If you don't know where your current polling place is located, visit the Louisiana Secretary of State website to find out.  Your West Bank Real Estate Specialist

Pass Your Blessings, Please
2007-11-13 10:58:30
At this time of year, when we are all counting our blessings, I think it is important that we should also take the time to remember those less fortunate.  What if your blessings did not include a roof over your head or a place free of violence?  What if the smallest, necessary items were unavailable to you?  What would you do?  Where would you turn?    The Latter & Blum Algiers office, in support of a local battered women's shelter, is collecting small toiletries to donate.  These items are always needed by the shelter...many women come to them with little more than the clothes on their backs. You know you have a drawer full of shampoo, conditioner, small wrapped soaps and other goodies from hotels hiding somewhere in your house.  Or those perfume and makeup samples that came along with your last purchase.  What are you saving them for?  Put them to good use and put a smile on someone's face!

Algiers Applebee's Reopened! After being absent from the Algiers restaurant scene since 2005, Applebee's on General de Gaulle had their grand reopening on November 12, 2007 at 11 am.  Staff hiring and training has been going on for the last few weeks and I personally know a few neighborhood teens who have gained their first entry into the working world with the reopening of this restaurant.  I'm thrilled to see another dining option in Algiers.    Speaking of dining...I had the pleasure of utilizing one of our locally owned businesses to cater an open house for me recently.  Rusty Camus, the owner at The Bar B Q Place, prepared some delicious pulled pork, along with some very tasty cole slaw and potato salad.  He was kind enough to allow me to pick up my order before the restaurant was even open and all of the staff were pleasant and helpful in loading up the car with all of my goodies.  I was so impressed, the family

West Bank Weekend Events - November 2-4, 2007

Rouse's Supermarket Debuts in AlgiersLouisiana owned Rouse's Supermarket has taken over the Sav A Center location on General de Gaulle in Algiers which quietly closed on 10/29/07.  The reopening was on October 31, 2007 and the store layout is the same as before, but without the self check out lines.  I saw tons of fresh goodies in the bakery department when I visited to order a cake, and plenty of cashiers were on duty.  While it's not Breaux Mart, it is encouraging to see another locally owned business in Algiers, as I continue my quest to Stay Local!   The New Orleans Food and Farm Network will sponsor workshops on vegetable growing and other gardening skills at the Ovah de Rivah Creole Folk Life Village on Saturday, 11/3/2007 from 9 am - 2 pm.  The Village is located across the street from the Algiers Courthouse, on the river side of the levee.  Garden supplies, plants, food and more will be for sale along with some

Selling Your Home is a Business - Run It Like One!
2007-11-26 19:36:22
Jumping into the real estate market, you have basically become a business owner, trying to sell a product - in this case, your home.  Like all small business owners, you need to know about supply and demand, what the current market conditions are, who your target customers are, what the competition is doing and how to properly advertise your product.  Without taking a crash course in economics, here are a few tips to help you move your "product" during a slowing market. Target Your CustomersWho is your target customer?  This all depends on the product (house) that you are selling and your target buyer may actually be a combination of different types.  No 2 buyers are the same, but most can be summed up as (1) first time home buyers, (2) move up buyers (looking for a larger home), (3) down sizing buyers (looking for a smaller home), (4) relocating buyers and (5) investors.A house in an up and coming or trendy neighborhood may appeal to home buyers that are willing to see beyond

Are You Sure Your Homeowner's Insurance Is Being Paid?
2007-12-03 13:26:31
I spend a lot of time surfing the internet, looking for interesting articles about the real estate business.  On one of my stops today, there was an article that addressed the increasing number of mortgage companies that have gone out of business this year, which brought up the question:What happens to the insurance premiums collected into your escrow account by these now defunct companies? If your mortgage provider has closed their doors, you need to monitor your insurance policies, both home owners and flood, to be sure that the annual premiums are being paid.  If the premiums are not submitted to your insurance company on time, you risk having your policy cancelled and being left at risk and without coverage. How can you monitor your policy?  Contact your insurance agent.  Payments should be made by the mortgage company within one month of the policy renewal.  Since most of us don't get a notification of payment (only of cancellation), your agent can tell
