2008-03-13 16:03:40

Programmers Guild rebuts Bill Gates call for more H-1b visas
2008-03-15 20:19:14
Excellent write up on Bill Gate's testimony for the education committee in Washington D.C. I have to say I totally agree with this article. This is visa program has directly effected my life and what it boils down to is these corporation do not want to pay American salaries and benefits when they can outsource the work and get excellent tax breaks from the Bush administration. But gee us dumb Americans just can't seem to do math or science - go figure.

Care and Feeding of Baby Linux Users
2008-03-15 19:21:39
This brand-new Linux user, this refugee from the Redmond wastelands, was stretching her wings and trying to fly. She edited xorg.conf all by herself, though not quite the right way. She exposed a bug in Ken's customer support (don't use writable CDs for recovery disks). Now how many new Linux users can even find xorg.conf, let alone have the boldness to muck with it? Or even experienced users? The Ubuntu forums are cram-full of command-line fear and loathing; the very sight of a text file drives them into seizures. I think Paula's eagerness to explore and try new things should be rewarded.

KolourPaint: More than a Microsoft Paint clone
2008-03-20 09:22:06
Just as Microsoft Paint is included with every Windows installation, so KolourPaint has been part of the kdegraphics package since KDE 3.3. This simple raster graphics editor works well not only in KDE, but also in Xfce, GNOME, and Fluxbox. Although it started out as a clone of Microsoft Paint , KolourPaint has grown to include more features than its proprietary inspiration. KolourPaint provides tools for image manipulation and icon editing as well as the typical "fingerpainting" that Paint is well known for. KolourPaint's and Paint's interfaces are nearly identical, but hidden behind a simple interface are several advanced features that make it a great graphics editor.

Rescuing Collectible Sun Equipment with Debin Linux
2008-03-22 15:44:55
A while back, we bought a Sun Ultra 5 workstation with a winning bid of about $20.00 or so. It has a 360 MHz SPARC processor, 128 Meg of RAM, and an eight gigabyte harddrive. Most computers from Ebay are sold without operating systems, and this machine was no exception. Installing an operating system on Sun equipment isn't hard, once you know how to do it.

Salasaga burns brightly at its start
2008-03-24 18:42:12
One of the remaining gaps in the GNU/Linux desktop is an editor for producing Flash content. When viewing Flash files, users can limp along with Adobe's proprietary player or the still-incomplete although free Gnash player, but the best they can do for Flash creation is employ the limited ability of OpenOffice.org Draw to export to the format. Considering the often trivial uses to which Flash is put, this lack is not entirely lamentable, but the fact remains that nothing remotely comparable to Adobe's Flash CS3 Professional. Salasaga, which until recently was called the Flame Project, is an effort to fill this gap by providing the functionality of Adobe Captivate for producing Flash computer tutorials and animations.
