The Wild Cats of North Egremont
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Over the holiday season I had the privilege of caring for a band of wild cats at our local dump. A good friend of mine who tends to them had to rush to the bedside of her terminally ill mother and I felt it was the very least I could do for her. So I took on the daily task of mixing donated cat food and keeping the cats' water from freezing. Now it's been well over a month and this little job continues to bring me joy. The cats are all feral (homeless) and four of them are litter-mates who look just the same with black and white "tuxedos." Now, when I park my truck beside their little shelter, they all come tumbling out of the woods, purring and rubbing up against one another. I have yet to stroke one of their shiny heads but the look of gratitude is unmistakable. I have read that there is one feral cat for every person in this country! They live a very difficult life, battling illness and bitter cold. This is my small effort to make the lives of at least five beautiful feral cats

An Ex-racing Greyhound's Life
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"At Ease" - 9" x 12" watercolorby Helene KeoughClick here to buy. Before he retired from racing, this greyhound's name was Ritz Cracker. Thanks to his foster mom, Carol, and the other hardworkingfolks at Greyhound Rescue Foundation of Tennessee, this lucky grey found a loving family to care for him. Now, he's simplyknown as Ritz.As an artist, I truly enjoyed painting Ritz, especially capturing that look of contentment on his face. As an animal lover,I felt great donating a portion of this sale's proceeds to Greyhound Rescue Foundation of Tennessee. There is another younggreyhound, you see, with a couple of broken bones in his foot, who requires another complicated surgery before he can beplaced in with a family. It's nice knowing that every penny really does count, isn't it?Thanks so much for joining us here. And the very warmest wish for a Happy New Year from our family to yours. Animals and Art . . . The Perfect Combination
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"A YOUNG CORGI" by Lee Mitchelson A miniature Oil Painting (ACEO) Currently available (link below)This painting is of a very young dog, but is offered in a charity auction benefiting Old Dog Haven, a place for dear old doggies who have fallen on hard times. Old Dog Haven offers palliative care (hospice) to dogs who are rescued from animal shelters, found lost and wandering or surrendered by owners who can't care for them in their old age. It's easy to imagine how traumatic it is for these dogs, to have been torn away from their families at the time they most needed consistency and love. Old Dog Haven is one of the animal rescue organizations that Art for Critters donates to on eBay, regularly. A life involving both animals and art, is a good life indeed! Sometimes, I think I should write and illustrate a book about all the animals I've known. Like one of my old rescue dogs, Bodie. He is a big white polar bear of a dog, many pounds of love and humor. He is not bothered much by hi

Tiggy
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"Tiggy" - 9 x 12" acrylic on canvas.Copyright 2007 Alice Berkman.Click here to bid.Tiggy and her brother came to us as little kittens. A friend who is actually allergic to cats, stopped and picked them up on a remote country road, where apparently they were abandoned in the middle of nowhere. They were raised by a little dog of ours, Zippy, a terrier/chihuahua mix, who pretty much took over raising the little tikes. To this day, Tiggy is often seen curled up by the dogs rather than any of the cats. Zippy is often correcting his kids with a little growl, especially if they try to root him out. This is Zippy when he was caught in the act of eating birdseed! The look on his face says it all. Apparently, he went through the little cage door! This auction is for Old Dog Haven, please see the website of this wonderful organization.

My studio is home to 10 rescue kitties..Shai, Khepera, Shadou, Krista,Mink, Tefnut, Shu, Gabriela, Moonette and Stars better known as mycrew..:) Last Friday I lost one, my debonaire Socrates, a stray thatappeared at our terrace doors Christmas Day 3 years ago. I cried forhim but cried more for the empty space that his parting created. Ismile and rejoice in knowing that the last 3 years of his tough life hefound a place to call home. A place he was cared for, a place where hefound shelter from all the elements, and a place where he foundunendless love. Never again to feel the pains of hunger, or thebrutal north winds as it drives sleet and snow. The summer of 2004 a small kitten came crying out of the woods as welaughed and bonded as a family by an evenings campfire. Thru ourdetermination and patience he ventured closer to a humans touch. Thecrew inside watched him from the terrace doors venture to the glass andthen take a step back. The Definition of Feral
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Feral - It is a misconception that a cat who is feral is wild and uncontrollableBut the truth is they didn't have the pleasure of human company early in their lives and reverted to their wilder state. They're relatively calm and quiet, just scared. They're curious as to what people are all about. So with someone who has experience with feral cats, they'd have a chance at becoming companions. Many rescued cats are awaiting such company. This painting is of the face of a feral cat.It will be offered at auction on ebay here:DEAN RUSSO ART10 % of the proceeds from this auction will benefit PAWSPAWS is a non-profit cat adoption center in West Linn, Oregon. I Love Mondays!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The truth is, I look forward to Mondays when everyone goes back to work and I can once again concentrate on my artwork. The weekends are always so busy that there is just no time to be creative. Those of us who were blessed with the creative gene are addicted to being creative. We're not happy if we can't find time to make something.I've left jobs as an art teacher, a rural mail carrier, a picture framer and a host of other odd jobs because I couldn't find time to paint. I work from home now and I love it! Oftentimes it's hard to figure out how to come up with the money for an upcoming bill...but that's the same for everyone, everwhere, it seems. We've all gotten so caught up with the material things, and we've so stressed ourselves out because of it. I've learned to do with less, so that I can still create when the mood strikes. But enuf about me...Recently I was invited to join a wonderful group of talented people who are also incredibly generous....Art for Critters. I'm tota

Hard Road
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Let it be known I am a Cat Person. Oh yes, one of those. I have three cats at present but have had cats my entire life starting with a small grey kitten when I was a little girl. To the left is my cat Tootles who presently helps me paint. A year and a half ago I retired from full-time work and moved from Colorado to California to live by my sister on a farm. And paint. Since I would be living in an isolated area it was strongly suggested I get a dog. I never wanted a large dog and somewhere in my list of life wishes - along with being Oprah's best friend and having thin thighs - I thought I'd get a fluffy white cute dog just to bark and let me know when strangers were around. When I arrived in California my sister presented me with the thinnest dog I had ever seen. And he was lame. And SO not fluffy and white. She said it had taken her several days to entice him from the highway with food and he had already gained a lot of weight from what he was. I hated to think about that. The won

I hope a lot of people follow me on my big trip! I will try to make it as fun for everyone as possible. For those who dont know, I am traveling by RV, with my dogs...from Alabama to Alaska . Thats 10,000 mile round trip journey and my most ambitious trip yet.I cant wait to get started, it is always such an adventure. I meet the most interesting people when I travel, like the man that had just walked from Tijuana Mexico to Mount Whitney California because he promised his wife he would, just before she passed.Thats the stuff that keeps me going, knowing there are people out their that follow their hearts wherever the path leads. He just put on a pack and walked 600 miles, and he was just getting started. THAT is amazing. And thats what I look forward to when I travel. My rig...Murphy, ready to go, as always:) He is the one that guarantees the trip will be fun. He is a people magnet and no one walks past without getting a little of his attention. He truly loves EVERYONE and every thing.clic

Unicorns and Equine Dreams
1970-01-01 00:59:59
When I was a little girl, thoughts of horses filled my every waking moment. I dreamed and schemed of the horse I would own, how in the world I would actually buy that horse and where in my suburban back yard I would keep my dream equine. My horse would have a golden mane, knicker softly when he saw me and carry me on pounding hooves over open fields and valleys…..Well, in reality, I was one of six children whose hard working single mom struggled to cover the basic costs of keeping us all fed and clothed. Actually owning a horse was most certainly a dream, but that didn't stop me from happily imagining my world with a horse beside me.I carried that dream all through my childhood, through adolescence and into adulthood. I volunteered at various stables just to be near horses, to touch and smell them, revel in that equine presence. Until finally when I turned 40 (!!!) I decided, "its now or never", and purchased my first horse! Equine number one was a huge, black retired dressage

JUMP!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Say 'Hi' to Nada, the Greyhound Rescue Foundation of Tennessee's current 'special needs' greyhound. Nada broke his leg during a race, which put an end to his career, but thankfully, not his life. The sad fact is, it costs a great deal to give a broken grey a chance at a normal happy life, which is why, at this point, GRTN can only help one grey at a time. The donation made from the sale of the painting below will go directly to their "Special Needs" fund, to help pay Nada's medical bills. In my eyes, that makes my painting just a little bit extra special.JUMP!7" x 9" Original Watercolorby Helene KeoughClick here to view auctionThis painting is of Squid, a 2 year old troublemaker who would jump from one turnout pen to the next at the track just to be close to her trainer. Every state, every country has this problem, it is by no means a regional issue. If you can find a way to help save even one horse, you are extending the hand of mercy to all equines! Life With Cattledogs

"Sleepy Bear""Surrender to the Frisbee"The two cattle dog paintings above are available this week on ebay. "Life With Cattledogs"These are our "boys" Rocky (on the left) and Dusty (on the right). Rocky got his name because of his rocky start in life. A kind soul found him apparently thrown away in a big dumpster and brought him to their local shelter. When I saw his photo on the internet he was half starved and very scared looking. I knew he was to be mine. We drove 3 hours to pick him up and it was love at first sight. At first he was very afraid of men and it took him awhile to bond with my husband but now he is very much a "daddy's boy" and follows him everywhere - literally from room to room not letting him out of his sight. Both dogs go to work with my husband everyday at the boat shop. Their commute consists of walking (or in their case running) downstairs to the shop - we just live upstairs from my husband's business. As an artist I find both of these guys to be a great source

Rocky got his name because of his rocky beginning in life. Some compassionate soul rescued him from a dumpster that he had apparently been thrown away in. He was half starved and completely scared. When I saw his photo on the internet at Petshelters.org I knew we were meant to be together. My husband and I drove 3 hours to go and meet him. It was love at first sight for us. They pose all day long - what else can I do but paint them! Thse paintings have allowed me t

Humbled by A4C
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I am relatively new to the group "Art for Critters", perhaps a year now. Within that year I have grown to enjoy looking at every new work of art made by it's members. I am truly amazed at the talent. There is fur I can swear can be touched, birds in flight, big cats so real, imaginative dreamy works, tiny little cards that have more detail than any large scale oil, group projects that cover every style. These artists are not movie stars and sports heroes who dedicate their "free time" to a cause. They do this because they love to do it. It's in their hearts and it makes a difference. Above is my cocker spaniel "Valley", left at the Humane Society after a family could not pay her medical bill after being hit by a car. The Humane Society saved her life and her leg, which has 3 pins in it and cannot be bent at the joint.....she is the reason I do it. Search "A4C" on Ebay. You will find work in all styles and budgets. You may even save a life, or a limb, or simply buy a can of food. -D

In the Company of Angels
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Ditto to the last post....this group is just an awesome bunch. I'm so glad that Michael Frase invited me to join. It's funny the way it happened...I got an email from someone who really sounded like a young person, perhaps an art student. He said he had found my website and was impressed with my work, and wanted to know how it was working out for me financially, and if I had any advice for him. Well....he hit me on one of those days when I was down. I'm the kind of person who doesn't sugar-coat it, and told him that if he intended to make a living with his art, he needed to learn everything about computer art first. I also told him that I have been doing my artwork full-time for over 20 years, and was still not able to make a living at it.His response was... "I thought maybe you could help me out with some advice, but I'm the one who might be able to help you." He told me about this wonderful group of artists who work together to help out animal charities, while at the same

Well, ten yearsish. You know, back in a more pure age. The 90s. I became a history major with a compulsive doodling habit; I was the student that professors would pull to the front of the class to show my notes to everyone. I was also the student that snuck into classrooms 15 minutes before class to cover the entire chalkboard with jokes and murals. But when I tried to get into one of the drawing classes, I was turned down -- my portfolio wasn't "sophisticated enough."Well phooey on them. If I thought any of them would give a fattened pig, I'd go back and rub my full time status in their faces, but I doubt they remember the disappointed history major trudging from their office. Nor did they probably glance

Feathered Friends and Lists
1970-01-01 00:59:59
< Recently visiting the National Wildlife Refuge that is very close to where I live, I snapped this shot of a hawk. The photo of the owl I took in my back yard. The owl lives in a stand of old eucalyptus trees and he was uncharacteristically on the ground one day fussing at my dog Merlin (named for the engine, not the wizard). When I went to the bird refuge Merlin was not allowed to ride along. Much better all around. If I took Merlin to the bird refuge there would be the certainty a park ranger would report me, put me on a list. Then in the wonderful bureaucratic machinery of the government, lists would be switched, and I would end up on a no-fly list. I would be at an airport somewhere trying to explain that they had the wrong list. There were some large birds there that Merlin would want to bark at. Sandhill Cranes. And some really large birds I couldn't find in my bird books at all and my sister and I decided were Pterodactyls. Well, maybe not. But I still haven't identified th

Which Way to the Flying horse Ranch?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"Sky Dancer"4" x 6" pyrography on birchClick on Pegasus to be taken to my latest A4C auctions When I was about 4 years old I drove my mom (and siblings) crazy looking for the flying horse ranch. I was positive it was close by, after all the signs for it were posted everywhere! My mom bless her soul, actually patiently drove around to help me look for it, saying "Well honey, I guess they want to stay hidden, they probably don't want a bunch of people scaring the horses". It wasn't until later that one of my sisters finally let me in on the secret.... it wasn't a flying horse ranch, it was a Mobile gas station. It wasn't for a few more years, but after a mean tempered Shetland pony, a sweet tempered Welsh pony, and a little Quarter pony, I finally graduated to my own beautiful Pegasus. OK, so he couldn't actually fly, but he could jump, and he wasn't exactly beautiful, he was actually a pretty ugly, rawboned, big headed hulk of a horse. His name wasn't even Pegasus, it wa

Invitation to Play
1970-01-01 00:59:59
"The Instigator" Ok, this is how it all started. A day with the house all to myself (nobody to point out that I may be losing my mind) and a box of oil pastels I've had for a couple of years now that had never been opened. My mission was a simple one - just play and have fun! There were no reference photos no drawings or diagrams just me and a blank piece of paper. The first free flowing thought was of dog bones and balls (no surprise there if you've seen my "real" paintings.) So off I went:"Dog Math" Ah, that was fun. Kind of "beginners mind" like in grade school with a new box of crayons. So I turned up the music and continued. Just picking out all my favorite colors and diving right into some petal shapes:"The Invitation " Ok, so they're not masterpieces. But I encourage everyone to try it - just you a piece of paper and a new medium you'd like to get to know. Don't be afraid... Have fun!Shelleyebay ID hissnhowl

The Birds of Winter
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This is an ode to what I call my "Winter birds." These little darlings are actually here year round, but in the deepest and darkest days of Winter, when everything is frozen and gray, these feathered friends bring me great joy. Winter here in New England can be quite severe. It's not unusual on a January day to have the wind chill dip to 40 degrees below zero with snow blowing and icicles covering the windows. Yet on a day like that, when I look out my studio window, those sweet little birds are flitting about gathering seeds from my feeder and chirping merrily. In addition to their cheery attitude, there are the colors! There is nothing like the unworldly red of the Cardinal against a stark gray and white backdrop, but in Winter my eyes seem to be more receptive to the subtle shade of the less colorful birds as well. The dear little Chickadee, so small and jaunty with his deep black cap and brilliant white chest. The female Cardinal is especially colorful in the Winter, her subtle s

STILL LIFE: Ferrets in Satin Sheets
1970-01-01 00:59:59
An artist friend suggested I put forth a few ferret paintings, since I am owned by three of the little critters (a.k.a. weasels, the girls, furry princesses). So I riffled through my photos and considered referencing the one above for a painting. I've even toyed with several titles:Yin-yang (but that's a bit too obvious, don't you think?)Furry pretzels.Who says pets are like their owners (I sure can't twist myself into a knot!)Another use for Victoria's Secret PJ's.Guess who rules this roost? The last title aptly describes the furry (or feathery, or scaly) bond that brings the Art For Critters artists together as a group. Simply put, when it comes to animals, we are all bonafide, card carrying softies, and I don't just mean for our own pets. I'm talking about the animals who don't get to sleep on Victoria's Secret PJs, you know, the ones in need to whom we donate a portion of our sales. And take it from me, knowing that my art helps an animal in need is a wonderful feeling.FRU

Of Empty Barns and Full Walls
1970-01-01 00:59:59
My barn has a weathervane of a horse on the roof. Uh, that's the only horse on this farm. The barn holds pigeons and dust mostly. I kidded that when I retired to this particular house I could have a horse cause the folks before me did and there is a tumbledown barn on the property. Turns out real horses are way too much work for me. But I am glad for all the people in this world that love them and take care of them. Like Lee Mitchelson, the blogger I'm filling in for today. I'm a sub-blogger. Sounds technical doesn't it?The horses in my life are 2 dimensional. They hang in frames on my walls. I'm a third generation painter so you can imagine the wall space is at a premium around here. Now I have three cats and one dog but I can have umteen animals to surround me when they are in paintings.
