Glorious Day
2007-03-13 00:11:00
Just an ordinary day here. Weather in the 80's has the kids begging to play outdoors from the moment they wake up. The younger ones have been looking longingly at the tourists swimming already on the lake front and just can't wait until mom and dad will start bringing them over for their daily swim. The wayward teen trio have been surprisingly well behaved even extending a hand to help do some spring cleanup in the back yard. All three have suddenly decided to grow out their hair which they have always kept very short since the day they came here. Bob and I have been laughing about it because they honestly don't think we know why the sudden change in looks. Could it be that their photos are posted in various stores and they are no longer allowed to enter them ? Or is it that others in the neighborhood who are shopping can also view these photos ? What would I do without my humorous way of looking at things ?

Who Needs Sand ?
2007-03-14 02:31:00
Do you know how hard it is to get sand out of little kids hair ? I just finished four hours of bathing kids or helping to wash the sandbox out of their heads. Why is it that to play in the sandbox it is not fun unless you pour a bucket of sand over your head or anothers ?They need to be up and out the door by 8:30 tomorrow to attend a community class on the history of paper making and then on to a tour of the nature preserve afterwards. They should sleep well tomorrow night. Since Bob is tending to this educational field trip I'm hoping to get some major cleaning done while they are gone and maybe some playtime for me in the garden. I still have about 50 more tomato plants to transplant that I just have not found the time to put in the ground.

The Measure of a Man
2007-03-13 20:51:00
Deep in contemplation today on just what we are going to do about our hoodlums. With their attitudes that the world owes them and if it's not given to them then they shall just steal their way through life ; add no fear of getting caught or going to jail to that and it makes for some very rough kids to try to get through. I have to say these are not the type of kids who rage and break things , not at all. They are very calm and compliant. Their anger is more of the passive-aggressive type. The type who will look you in the face , tell you how sorry they are and then just go right back out and do it again. Makes it really difficult to help impart some basic wisdom and perhaps help them to learn that it is the choices they keep making that causes the trouble. Instead they are still stuck on stupid and dumb as a bag of rocks in their thought process. To them it's not that they committed a crime once again that bought the police down on them no, instead it's all because they ar

Garden Wonders
2007-03-16 02:39:00
Kids are busy tonight watching our next litter of pups being born. Always exciting to kids but, go figure, I was counting on a quiet evening and going to bed early. We had a gentleman come to door today to buy one of our pups from another litter a few weeks ago , seems he just got divorced and wanted to replace his wife with a puppy. I almost burst out laughing ! He said the house felt empty and quiet but he would rather listen to a puppy whining than his ex-wife.Spent some time in the garden with the kids today quizzing them on the identity of various plants and showed them the soon to open bloom on the dutchmens pipe vine. I hope to instill in them my love for gardening and the knowledge that they can grow their own food. When they are young it's wonderful to see that look of amazement on their faces that the vegetables you buy in the grocery store actually start out in somebodys garden or farm. Today while making dinner I was explaining to some of the littles about where

The Happy Dance
2007-03-18 20:20:00
Yippee....I'm doing the happy dance. Apryl has received a four year scholarship to receive her teachers degree. This one worried me for a couple of years after she decided to take time off from college. She will be turning 21 in April and has been working as a teacher in a pre-school.

All Things International
2007-03-18 00:33:00
Another rather busy weekend here. Last night was the St. Patrick's Day parade and today Johnny had to attend a police explorers meeting for a special sheriffs office appreciation event. He got to dress up as "Officer McGruff" and had a great time but is very tired tonight.Managed to get some planting time in and actually managed to get 75 more tomato plants in the ground. We now have tomatoes growing from 15 different countries around the world. Seemed appropriate that we should have a real international garden. We lost all our watermelons and sunflowers to the kids rabbit....Mr. Sniffles. Seems we are going to have to keep him penned up unless the kids are playing in the yard with him. The kids will plant some more watermelon and sunflowers tomorrow. At dinner tonight I was entertained by another yahoo discussion about countries. Matthew was trying to explain to us that Ethiopia is not really a part of Africa. Say what ? I'd best alert the companies who make globes of the wo

It Bloomed !

After patiently waiting a few days for it to unfold the littles came running into the house this morning to let me know the bloom on the Dutchmans Pipe Vine had opened and it smells like lemon !

Whats in Your Garden ?
2007-03-20 01:14:00
Just realized today that we need to take a bunch of adoption decrees down to social security to change the last names to match their social security numbers. We totally forgot about updating the social security numbers for the last 7 adoptions. Usually we are on top of things like that but life with our teen yahoos kind of keeps us distracted in other directions. We are now on first name basis with 10 police officers in our small town. I wonder.....is that a good thing or bad ? I can now proudly say our vegetable garden is complete. I finished getting the last of the 200 tomato plants into the ground today. This years garden now consists of 250 bean plants , Corn ( who knows how much is left thanks to Stanley our miniature horse. ) Lettuce , radishes , carrots , broccoli , brussel sprouts , onions , 100 cucumber plants , all types of squash , watermelon ( replanted today after sniffles the rabbit ate all the others...grr. ) cantelope , okra , peas and just for fun things like

Busy Day
2007-03-22 01:58:00
Busy day today with Max heading off to Shriners Hospital to check on the healing process of his leg that he just had the rodding surgery done on. Everything is looking good and he can begin bearing weight on it. Two more weeks though before they take the cast off. Johnny , Caleb , Asia and Max headed off to to youth group this evening. I'm still trying to get my older teens to attend but with the three of them having spent so much time in various Christian programs to help them with their various problems they appear to have "Christian Burnout ". This is something I really need to work on them with because they really need a strong Christian foundation to help them move forward in their lives....onward and upward so to speak. It has now been 2 weeks that we have been without a dryer and it's getting a little tiresome to keep lugging the wet laundry to our guest house next door. Thank God we do have another washer and dryer there because the option of taking 7 loads of laundry

Poor Gizmo
2007-03-22 22:51:00
Joseph and Matthew decided today that surely if they can cut their own hair and Timmy and Scooters than surely they can clip the dogs hair. We had shaved down three other dogs a few weeks ago but poor Gizmo was still waiting. Poor Gizmo....he has a few bald spots but they'll grow out. At one point the boys wanted to quit but I told them it was more important to learn to finish projects they start. I did volunteer Sean to help hold the dog and I clipped his face myself as no way was Gizmo going to let them that near his face. The end result was not all that bad for something that was a first time thing for the boys. They are happy with the end result and proud of themselves.

The Lure of the Water
2007-03-25 04:31:00
Doesn't matter , even if I say lets just go build sand castles and play in the sand , no swimming today....never works....the water just calls them closer and closer. Sometimes I just don't feel like like bringing home wet sandy kids...dry sand is easier to dust off.

Shame on Me !
2007-03-25 03:47:00
Tsk..Tsk...Tsk... shame on me. A great big thank you to several of my readers who wrote to tell that my sweet teen boys were flashing "gang signs" in their beach photos. I thought we were over that but it seems they are just getting real subtle and more sophisticated at flashing gang signals in my photos. I deleted the offending photos so no use going to check it out now if you didn't catch it the first time. How Embarrassing !These boys have nothing to do with gangs except in their own heads where they are infatuated by them. I had a real good laugh when I pulled the photos and searched the meanings of the hand signals. What was so funny was that my black son is flashing a hand sign for a Hispanic Gang that hates Blacks ! Duh....guess he is the fool of his own jokes. Yes , I am fully aware that a gang wanna-be is a sign of serious trouble and sooner or later they will run into a real gang member who isn't going to take a non gang member flashing hand signs. They will end up b

Movie on the Lake Front
2007-03-24 02:04:00
Kids are enjoying another movie on the lake front tonight. This time they are showing " Flushed Away. " So far nobody has had to be returned home due to melt downs like last month. I'm home in a very quiet house with only 6 kids who would never have sat for the movie. So, this is what it is like to have a small family ? I think I like it but I'm sure after awhile I'd go nuts. I love my big old crazy family ! We have our ups and downs but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I Lost My Cool....
2007-03-26 19:05:00
I was having a great day until I totally lost it and gave somebody a piece of my mind. One would think my kids would be the culprits but as usual it was not the kids. My kids I can handle without loosing it. The culprit was a medicaid representative for the state and it was during a team meeting over the phone for my daughter who is in residential care. Bureaucracy always wears my patience thin. So what ticked me off this time ? Once again they suggested to us that we terminate our parental rights on our daughter in order for her to be eligible for more state funding in order that she receive the care she needs. Now the care that she needs is long term residential until she is of age. They agree that she is a danger to herself and others and cannot control it due to schizoprenia. I told the nice medicaid representative lady that her suggestion was out of the question for two reasons and then I made her aware that according to Tallahassee what she is suggesting is a crime punis

Seed Savers
2007-03-28 22:43:00
I thought I was done planting seeds but alas that is not to be. Many of you know of my passion for gard ening but I am also obsessed with growing not the plain old everyday tomato but tomatoes of various countries around the world. Most call them heirloom tomatoes. These are the tomatoes whose seeds have been saved and passed down from generation to generation. The seeds are the result of generations of cultivation. They also have stories and hold the cultural and historical biographies of the countries they come from. I have been saving seeds and growing them out for years. This year I am also growing out some rare and endangered seeds for a seed bank I belong to since the stock was getting low. As I browsed through the data base I came across one tomato seed that I had to make sure I grew out. The story behind it ticked me off and I thought I'd share it here. The tomato is from Iraq and is called Red Rouge D' Irak. It is the tomato most grown in Iraq for centuries but now it

Max who has osteogenesis Imperfecta has very fragile bones. He is still in the leg cast from the rodding surgery on his leg. Today he broke his arm and is quite a bit of pain. Max at ten years old is all boy and with his age comes this idea of invincibility. He does not think of "what if " or see the danger of what may happen when he decides to horse around. What started as a simple lake front walk with Max in his wheelchair ended up as Max with a broken arm. I told him a million times no racing or doing wheelchair stunts but he just had to try doing spin outs and wheelies. Just as he was told what could happen , the wheelchair flipped and Max was on the ground. It's 2 weeks more for his leg cast to come off and now 8 wees for his arm. It's going to be a long , long summer. This weekend is our towns spring festival so the kids are really excited as they close down our street to traffic and set up for a weekend of fun. The carnival starts tomorrow night so they are on their be
