Best Laid Plans, Uh huh
2008-02-29 14:17:00
So much for the diet. No, not really. I haven't given up, but I'm taking a day off (yes, that's what we'll call it). Because ... I've had the worst few days. It all started Wednesday night. I took a Mucinex around 7pm, thinking it would help my cough so I could sleep better. But when I went to bed my heart started going crazy - thumping like I'd just run a marathon. I'd start to feel restful,

Diet Never Tasted so Good!
2008-02-27 14:05:00
I never had to think about dieting in my younger years. I was a skinny pre-teen, and an average teen, and an average newly married woman, and a slightly round first-time Mom. And after my first child, I lost the baby weight fairly easily. I never got back to pre-first-desk-job weight, but I was healthy and my clothes fit. But then I had second child, and not long after that, third child. And ugh

Dental Update
2008-02-23 18:13:00
My dentist had said tooth 15 and one other needed onlays, this after some major dental work last year (details here). I was suspicious then and more so now and debated what to do. I did go for that 2nd opinion after all, to a dentist that is actually far closer to us than the other, but who still seemed like a used car salesman. That aside, he gave a surprising diagnosis: tooth 14 was fine. A "

Princess Potty
2008-02-11 21:42:00
On a positive note - miraculous, actually - Mud Pie, Wednesday morning, decided to strip to nothing and put on a pair of her brother's underpants. On a lark, I brought the potty down from the attic and asked if she wanted to use it. Why, yes she did. I fully expected her to sit on it, chatter a while about potties and underpants, then get up having left nothing behind. I'd then put her in a

Big Fat F
2008-02-11 21:35:00
That would be me, for failing. Last week we did Monday's assigned school. Tuesday I had a dentist visit and a bizarre phone call and since then it's been downhill. Today I got a stack of books together thinking, yes, we'll get back on track today! But it just didn't happen. St. Nick and Fish wanted to play outside. They wanted to draw pictures. They wanted to play with Legos. I wanted a cup of

How'd it get to be Thursday?
2008-01-31 07:20:00
I woke up this morning feeling miraculously free of mucus, and with only the slightest muzzy-headed Nyquil hangover. Ah, finally, now I can start my week. Only, the week is almost finished! I can't say I'm disappointed by this, because I'm not. But I am surprised. I don't really remember much of anything since a playdate at a friend's house. But that was last Tuesday! Let's see, since then St.

The House of the Spider Robot Book I: Shrinking Attitude
2008-01-21 10:01:00
Shrinking Attitude: Getting Away From the Evil Spider Robot By St. Nick, age 7 (transcribed by Mom) It all starts with one mom and one dad and one sister and two boys. But one time when they were driving in the car, they smashed into another car. But the car transformed into a Giant Evil Spider! But until it's done transforming, it shakes the car and the robot is really strong. Everybody falls

Dental Humor

So, in relaying my dental saga to a friend, she suggested the Dentist's Favorite Hymn: Crown Him with Many Crowns. I can't stop laughing!!!!

Drillings and Fillings and Flim-Flam Scams?
2008-01-14 17:16:00
Frustrated. Torn. Confused. Angry. Betrayed. Worried. And a whole bunch more adjectives. I visited the dentist this morning, feeling pretty good about life. We're listing our house this week (great timing, I know. ::snicker::), Dr. D is super busy with his zillion and one projects, which stresses him out but makes him far easier to live with than if he is, heaven forbid, bored. (Neither of us

Unit III, Here We Come!
2007-12-24 13:34:00
January starts Unit III of Tapestry of Grace! I'm so glad (to be out of the wilderness). Following are links we intend to use. Any week: Worksheets from Calvary Chapel. Week 20: Worksheet on the divided kingdom & the Calvary Chapel pages on Elijah and the Ravens is very cute. Week 21: Word search on Jonah. This is as far as I am in planning now. More soon! Oh, and Merry Christmas Eve!

Why I Love My Husband
2007-12-22 09:40:00
Or, rather, why I love him today, since there are lots of other reasons to love him. Earlier in the week I started pestering him to get me a can of primer. I've detested our upstairs bathroom ever since I painted it it about six years ago. What on earth was I thinking to put royal blue, colorwashed with BLACK in a teeeeeny bathroom with one window? I know what I was thinking - that the dark

The Itch
2007-12-19 13:12:00
So, it's December. We're past three birthdays (Dr. D, my brother, St. Nick), only Christmas and one birthday left (Fish). I'm moody and hormonal (no, not any reason beyond the usual), and this cycle I'm picking Moving House as my obsession-of-the-month. I'm so desperate for something to change. For eight years we've lived here, in this neighborhood I've always seen as "temporary." We listed the

Another December Birthday Boy!
2007-12-17 12:45:00
Yesterday was St. Nick's birthday - seven years old!!! We'd had quite the snow storm overnight, and St. Nick was so happy we wouldn't make it to church ... He'd been dreading his class singing to him all week. But, we are not so deterred by five or so inches of snow. We went anyway! But we let the birthday boy sit with us, where he happily doodled throughout the whole service. We raced home to

Science Mania
2007-12-14 10:42:00
So, St. Nick is making me just the slightest bit crazy today. Yesterday he had the breakthrough that if he finishes ALL his schoolwork before lunch, the rest of the day he can do whatever he wants. I'm not sure why it took him half the year to realize this, but I'm also not sure I said it aloud until yesterday when I had to endure ten minutes of "I don't WANT to do math! I don't WANT TO!!!" (the

It Came! It Came! It Came!!!!!
2007-12-13 14:40:00
My Secret Sister's gift arrived today!!!! Just today Sgt. Dody had put out an announcement on the Loosethreads group, that those on the "Official List" needed to email her immediately. Well, I did but somehow I had a feeling ... And then the mailman stopped his van right in front of my house! Woo Hoo! This is IT, I thought. I raced to the porch, yelled, "Thank you!" to the mailman, and raced

Where Does the Time Go?
2007-12-07 09:09:00
I have been looking forward to a few hours with just Mud Pie this morning. Dr. D has the boys at the dentist - they left at 8:30. Yet now it is going on 10:30 and I have done none of the Big Things I had planned. Well, strike that, I did move the gifts from last night's shopping-with-my-mom extravaganza into the attic (the locked attic, I might add). But the other Big Things. What did I do

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
2007-12-02 09:13:00
This very day, Dr. D is celebrating his FOURTH DECADE of life!!!! (And I'm sure he's thrilled beyond measure that I've shared it here.) Now to go bake his cake!!!

Oh, Christmas Tree
2007-12-02 08:47:00
Yesterday (before the ICE STORM) we made our traditional visit to Lenderink Tree Farms. Much fun! Probably the most fun we've had since our pre-kid visits. It is so nice to have two of the three largely independent. No frantic, "Stay near us!" as one disappears into the back 40 of the farm (or rather, no worries if they disappear because the oldest is now old enough to come back); no balancing

Unnecessary Anxiety
2007-11-29 12:09:00
I won't mention that all anxiety is unnecessary; right now I'm facing the overwhelming silly decision of which doctor to visit for a probably little issue. This shouldn't be hard. Dr. D. certainly isn't giving me any sympathy on it, but ... I have three choices. Option 1: my "new" family doctor, rather my husband's doctor. I went to see him for one of those routine thingamabobs this summer,

Wow, Truly the Greatest Story Ever Told
2007-11-28 14:25:00
We'd had this film home from Netflix for a good two weeks, and since it was so long the kids never managed all the way through it, a while ago, we decided to have a Pajama Party, complete with popcorn. Truly, truly amazing. The animation itself is spellbinding, and beyond that, this is the most accurate, touching, and compelling rendition of Christ's life that I've seen. Well, don't take my word

Secret Sister Gift On its WAY!
2007-11-26 15:22:00
I sent this lovely package out to my Secret Sister on Friday!!! I can't wait for her to get it and open it!!! Here's a preview: HAHAA! As if that helps! I have to confess, it was a special joy for me to pray for her (something I'm still doing). All my angst about dropping the ball? Well, God is faithful even when I'm not - He didn't let me forget. Not only that, but He is already showing me

Back at it ... almost
2007-11-26 07:16:00
Well, today was supposed to be St. Nick's next outdoor adventure class. But, after two nights of waking in tears because of an earache, and one late evening at the med center, and a forecast of cold and wet, he's staying home. I think he was ready for a week off (they've had the first Monday of every month off, except December). He gave it one or two perfunctory "But I don't want to miss my class

Holiday Surprises
2007-11-23 08:41:00
#1 Stuffed Pumpkins! I tried this recipe on a whim a few weeks ago and it immediately became a favorite. Adapted (as always) from Taste of Home, this brought oooohs and aaaaahhhhs from everyone around the table - and more - once all had been served and were tasting the delightful sausage-rice stuffing within, they were ooooohing even more! There's nothing I love more than to share something I

On children...
2008-03-09 14:34:00
R. Scott Rodin writes (from the forthcoming Stewardship Resource Bible): Children are a gift from God (even in their twos and those teenage years). They are never "ours" in the sense that we have an absolute right of ownership over them. Our children can never be considered in abstracto from their relationship to us as God's gift to be stewarded and cherished. How tragic is our human history of

Everything We Need
2008-03-07 07:50:00
I started a post a day or so ago, a rambly whiny post about how hard life has been the past eight days, ever since my persistent cough became something truly noxious. Add to that, everything else seeming to fall apart at once - dental troubles, our mini van needing repairs, Fish needing surgery ... But whining isn't the response I need to have. I've prayed so much Scripture the past week and a

Pharmaceutical Guinna Pig
2008-03-13 12:22:00
Over two weeks of illness - not sure what's going on. St. Nick's hearing is still not right (though it's only been three days since he started the 2nd antibiotic for the ear infections), and me ... I took a prescription last night and had a horrible reaction to it - tremors, restless, quaking muscles. Like having fever chills without the fever. And the real kicker: I had not read the package

Week in the Life: A Report
2008-03-21 14:05:00
I've been using Homeschool Tracker, but the past few weeks I just couldn't think clearly enough to plan/keep up with it. I may not go back, which is a freeing thought. Anyway, I may well be procrastinating on judging an entry to the ACFW's Genesis contest right now, but I haven't done a school update in ages, since I started using HST, and I feel like doing one now. So, here it is! (That contest
