Super Chief Is Ready 2007-01-02 15:00:00
One of America's premier trains of days past, the SuperChief
, awaits as it prepares to head out across country. These trains, operated by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad, traveled between Los Angeles and Chicago until the early 1970s. This train was beautiful and exciting to see with its bright orange and yellow engines and gleaming silver passenger cars. Hard to believe this was the luxurious way to travel back then. Pen and watercolor, fits 16" x 20" mat.
Elaine's Colorful Teapot 2006-12-30 02:15:00
We were rearranging my wife's teapot collection one day in our kitchen. I pulled a colorful little teapot to the side and started drawing. (After all the others were rearranged and in their new positions, of course.) I did the pen work then threw on the color. I plan to do more of these and have several currently in work.

San Diego Charger 2006-12-24 04:25:00
LaDainian Tomlinson, of the San DiegoCharger
s, is setting records this season as one of the National Football League's premier runners. This original watercolor is a gift for my son Derek whose birthday is Christmas Day and who is an avid Charger fan. Go Chargers! Read more:San Diego
Owl Club 2006-12-19 01:30:00
This is a pen and ink memory of my growing up years in northern California. This neat little neon sign was for a little bar located in Roseville, California. I remember the sign because my parents would take us to have Chinese food in a restaurant above the bar in the 1950s. Once we ordered our food, my Dad would slip downstairs, have a beer and rejoin us in time for dinner. After dinner as we walked to our car I would look up to see the colorful neon lights and "the owl" still peering down at us.
Colorful Rose 2006-12-13 15:00:00
This rose is from one of the rose trees on the side of our home. The roses were in full bloom so I picked the largest and fullest one and painted it. This simple painting was done small on a 5" x 7" watercolor pad. These bright colors make a great image for my note cards. Read more:Colorful
Mask From Mexico 2006-12-09 18:27:00
ILLUSTRATION FRIDAYThis is a painting of a woodcrafted mask made in Mexico
many years ago. A neat feature of these realistic masks are the "operable eyelids" which open and close by pulling a string at the chin. The large, piercing eyes are glass and the eyelids have lashes. A reflective finish was due to a gesso undercoat applied to the wood, making shaping easier for the carver. My painting was done using a Lexus pen, watercolors and a Tombow water soluble pen.
Valley Home 2006-12-03 19:05:00
So when it's cold I bring you something hot.
This is a typical home in the Sacramento Valley
. This one is neat and tidy and located in the heart of Lincoln, California. I parked across the street and studied and sketched the home. I then took photographs and completed the painting at home. The time of day was about 11 AM in August and the sun was almost directly above. The sky should be smoother but I like most of the painting. What do you think? Are the trees, shrubs and lawn OK? What about the overall colors and the shadowed areas? Can you spot my intended "focal point"? Your comments and suggestions are important to me. Please send me your observations.
San Francisco Homes 2006-11-28 18:00:00
These are typical buildings found in San Francisco
along the streets that meander through this hilly city. I did the drawing using a Pilot rolling ball pen and finished it later with the watercolors. In 2007, I plan to travel to "The City" for a few days and do nothing but draw and paint. Should be fun. I just need to make it happen!

Greek Hillside 2007-01-07 16:15:00
This is a ink and watercolor rendering of a typical Greek
village--lots of hills and lots of white structures. Bits of color can be seen in the trees and the dome. I added some ochre tints to give a little more interest. This was done small on a 9" x 12" Strathmore watercolor pad.
End Of A Giant 2007-01-13 18:30:00
Illustration Friday-80s A PanAm Boeing 747 taxies down a runway in the late 1980s. The dark clouds above
this plane defined the future for this great name in aviation history. The airline finally began to fall apart following the 1986 hijacking in Pakistan, in which over 140 passengers and crew were killed or injured, and the 1988 bombing above Lockerbie, Scotland, which resulted in 270 fatalities. Bankruptcy soon followed and the airline went out of business a few years later.
Los Angeles Architecture 2007-01-17 05:08:00
Los Angeles
has some great buildings. This was drawn from a photo and it was only a small section of the photo. The ornate designs are very detailed and fun to draw even if I was not totally accurate. I added the color after I completed the drawing and I added more color than the photo showed just to give it more interest. Artwork was done on Staples supreme double sided matte paper. Hotel Del Coronado-San Diego 2007-01-23 15:40:00
For any artist, the Hotel
Del Coronado
, is fun to draw or paint. It is one of the major landmarks in the San Diego
area and is very popular with tourists. The large Dragon's Blood tree is the focal point of this painting and it stands in one of the hotel's courtyards. The tree gets its name because of the red sap it produces and was planted shortly after the hotel was built in 1988. Sometimes, the ocean breezes make it "too cool" to sit and draw this hotel unless you sit directly in the sunlight. Take a coat if you ever get down there. (I am fixing the sky at the flag in the center of the painting-needs to be blended and less of a hard line.) Read more:San Diego
Old Red Pickup 2007-01-27 02:36:00
I dusted off this painting that I did early in 2006 as it was perfect for this week's Illustration Friday-Red theme. I cleaned it up and added more detail and a little more color. I painted this beautiful red pickup from a photograph. The vehicle was not in too bad of shape and it looked like it was begging to be taken and restored. This is a small image and it fits into an 11" x 14" mat.

Hungarian Monument 2007-02-01 16:35:00
The Citadella is one of the most exciting monuments in Budapest, Hungry. Built in 1854, the Citadella was the most despised structure in the city. The Austrians built this fortress to keep Budapest under their thumb. This structure sits on a hill and overlooks the entire city and the Danube River. I liked this online photo and proceeded to sketch it while looking at my computer screen. I used pencil first to get the basic structure and shapes, and drew in about half of the inkwork. I finished the remaining inkwork and watercolors at my drawing board. Read more:Monument
Pansies 2007-02-05 14:00:00
This little exercise to paint pansies was inspired by all of you other artists who show your flower paintings. This is unfinished but I am going no further now. I will look at it again in a couple of months to see if I should continue. Read more:Pansies
Thanksgiving Time! 1970-01-01 00:59:59 In the United States, November 23rd is Thanksgiving
Day and is a time to give thanks for all that we have. Hopefully, many of you will be with family and friends to have a hearty meal and enjoy the day. I remember a few times growing up when I was not with family or friends and it was very lonely. I give thanks to my world-wide artist friends out there who have given me so many nice comments and solid critiques of my artwork. I am amazed at the great number of gifted, fellow artists. If you celebrate this holiday--enjoy it!
San Diego Lighthouse 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Anyone familiar with San Diego
, California, is familiar with this beautiful old lighthouse. The structure is perched on a finger of land which is called Point Loma and views the Pacific Ocean to the west, and overlooks the city of San Diego
, San Diego Bay, Mexico and the mountains to the east and south. At a height of 462 feet, it was once the highest functioning lighthouse in the nation and its light could be seen by ships far at sea. However, one major problem existed with the location of this structure which hindered its usefulness. The light's lofty perch meant it was often shrouded in fog, which rendered it useless to mariners. It is now preserved as an historical monument, is refurbished and looks monumental. If you like to feel alone, try walking around at this location when the fog is in. It is quiet, damp and very isolated-almost spooky. Read more:Lighthouse
Thanksgiving Setting 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I prepared this painting in about one hour to have it for this week's Illustration Friday entry. This is a section of our dining room center piece prepared for Thanksgiving
dinner--the pumpkins are tiny and given to us by a friend. I sketched in the image first, applied the watercolor, then finalized the painting with ink. Sometimes it is better to do things rapidly.......and don't think too much. Read more:Setting
My Pumpkin 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This painting was done on a warm sunny day at the end of September at a scenic pumpkin farm. I hope you enjoy this painting as we head deeper into the fall season. This was done on a 11" x 15" Strathmore, cold press, 140# watercolor sheet. I like this work. The back pumpkin is lame and some of the leaves are not defined enough. I need to work on accuracy in my shadow work. I would like some critiques of this art from all of you who view this. I will make note cards which will look great because image will be much smaller. The original painting looks great matted and framed. Read more:Pumpkin
Beach Winds 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The trees along any beach area are always whipped by the wind. This cluster of palms along a tropical beach somewhere in the Caribbean show how the branches are thrown around and are at the mercy of the winds. Each branch is whipped around which makes the palm trees look alive as if they are dancing. This pen and ink/watercolor painting done in 2005 is my entry for Illustration Friday's theme of "Wind". Leaving Truckee 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Amtrak train #5 leaves Truckee, California, on its scheduled run toward Sacramento. For many years, Truckee has been the final stop as trains prepare for the climb towards Donner Summit and beyond. This is a tight illustration using Nexus and Pilot pens on watercolor paper. I drew this from a photograph and hope to use watercolor on it one of these days. Read more:Leaving
Canada Grain 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This painting typifies the grain elevators that dot the plains of Canada
. There is something lonely about these structures and all of the scenery around it. I spent a summer in Canada during my college days and I remember these structures along with the long days. I am pleased with this work although there are some details that aren't exactly correct but I am overlooking them. Can anyone find the major glitch? Read more:Grain
UP 3997 Idling 1970-01-01 00:59:59 The power and strength of these huge old locomotives is felt even as they idled as they waited to head down the tracks. There is so much detail to be drawn on these engines that even if you leave some out no one can tell. This was lots of fun to draw. I used Nexus and Pilot pens and a smidge of watercolor for the engine and a Tombow water soluble pen at the tracks.
Palm Springs View 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This is a view of Mt. San Jacinto looking to the west from Springs
.htm">Palm Springs
, California. The rugged, dry mountain areas loom over the desert oasis towns and provide late afternoon shadows which ease the blazing heat on the desert floor. A tramway travels to the top of the mountain where the temperatures are much cooler and the view is spectacular. By the way, Palm Springs is a great place to visit in the middle of winter where it is generally mild and sunny.
Old Oak 1970-01-01 00:59:59 We have many, many oak trees in this part of the country. Trees are so much fun to draw because you can "noodle", play with darks and light and not be too exact on the smaller branches. This view is a close up of a larger drawing. I will provide the overall color painting at another time.
Coit Tower-San Francisco 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This tower on a hill is a San Francisco
landmark. A wealthy admirer of the fire fighters of the devastating 1906 earthquake left funds to the city for future improvements. The donated funds were used for the construction of the 210-foot tall art deco Coit Tower
at the top of Telegraph Hill. The tower's design is reminiscent of a fire hose nozzle and was quite controversial. This pen and watercolor original painting was given to our friends Sharon and Miles who live in San Diego. Read more:San Francisco
Ivy Covered Library 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I could not pass on drawing this grand old library covered with lush, green ivy. I did this drawing many years ago and I used Rapidograph Pens on Illustration Board. The original was given away as a wedding gift. Read more:Covered

River City Reflections 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This city scene along a river projects beautiful reflections. This ink and watercolor painting portrays a very serene part of the day. The calm river meanders past the city structures so slowly the water looks like it is not moving. Hazy skies dim the evening sunlight where all colors are muted. Soon, it will be dark and the city will sleep. Read more:Reflections

Old Victorian 1970-01-01 00:59:59 This post is another oldie from my past. My drawings were very tight and detailed. I have tried to loosen up on some of my current work but I do like going back to this style where I just "noodle" for hours. I used Rapidograph Pens on Illustration Board. Read more:Victorian
