Glucosamine sulfate reduces osteoarthritis progression in postmenopausal women. 2007-12-03 15:13:00 The results of a two recent, three year, randomized, placebo-controlled, prospective, indepent studies, were published in the journal, Menopause. The study authors concluded, "This analysis, from a large cohort of postemenopausal women, demonstrated for the first time that a pharmacological intervention for OA (osteoarthritis) has a disease-modifying effect in this particular population, the most frequently affected by knee OA.References:Bruyere O, Pavelka K, Royati LC, Deroisy R, Olejarova M, Gatterova J, Giacovelli G, Reginster JY. Black Cohosh for hot flushes? 2007-12-14 13:18:00 The results of a recent study suggest that black cohosh is more effective for reducing menopausal symptoms of hot flushes and night sweats than fluoxetine. However, fluoxetine was more effective in improving symptoms of depression."The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of fluoxetine and black cohosh in the treatment of women with postmenopausal symptoms.""At the end of the sixth month of treatment, black cohosh reduced the hot flush score by 85%, compared with a 62% result for fluoxetine. By the sixth month of the study, 40 women had discontinued the study--20 (33%) in the fluoxetine group and 20 (33%) in the black cohosh group. Compared with fluoxetine, black cohosh is more effective for treating hot flushes and night sweats. On the other hand, fluoxetine is more effective in improvements shown on Beck's Depression Scale."Oktem M, Eroglu D, Karahan HB, Taskintuna N, Kuscu E, Zeyneloglu HB. Black

Omega-3 fatty acids and cancer 2007-12-12 09:39:00 Though there are several health benefits of taking an omega-3 fatty acid supplement, this recent study suggests that cancer prevention may not be one of them:"CONTEXT: Omega
-3 fatty acids are purported to reduce the risk of cancer. Studies have reported mixed results.""CONCLUSIONS: A large body of literature spanning numerous cohorts from many countries and with different demographic characteristics does not provide evidence to suggest a significant association between omega-3 fatty acids and cancer incidence. Dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids is unlikely to prevent cancer."MacLean CH, Newberry SJ, Mojica WA, Khanna P, Issa AM, Suttorp MJ, Lim YW, Traina SB, Hilton L, Garland R, Morton SC. Vitamin intake and breast cancer risk 2007-12-12 09:38:00 A new study suggests that vitamins B6 and B12 may reduce the risk of breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women."BACKGROUND: High intake of folate, vitamin B(6), and vitamin B(12) have been hypothesized to lower the risk for breast cancer. ""CONCLUSIONS: In this population, high intakes of folate and vitamin B(12) were independently associated with decreased breast cancer risk, particularly among postmenopausal women."ReferenceLajous M, Lazcano-Ponce E, Hernandez-Avila M, Willett W, Romieu I. Supplementation with Coenzyme q10, riboflavin, and niacin in breast cancer patients 2007-12-12 09:20:00 "In breast cancer patients
, it is not the primary tumour, but its metastases at distant sites that are the main cause of death. Circulating breast cancer tumour markers such as carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3) are reliable indicators of impending relapse, in which an increasing tumour marker level is associated with a very likelihood of developing recurrence.""In the present study, 84 breast cancer patients were randomized to receive a daily supplement of 100 mg coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), 10 mg riboflavin and 50 mg niacin (CoRN) one dosage per day along with 10 mg tamoxifen (TAM) twice a day.""Serum cytokine levels were elevated in untreated breast cancer patients (Group II) and significantly reduced after tamoxifen therapy for more than 1 year (Group III). When group III breast cancer patients were supplemented with CoRN for 45 days (Group IV) and 90 days (Group V) along with tamoxifen, a significant reduction in cytokine levels were observed (P < 0.05
Vitamin D supplementation may lower breast cancer risk 2007-12-12 09:18:00 "Vitamin
D, a prosteroid hormone with anti-proliferative and pro-differentiation activity, is thought to act as a cancer chemopreventive agent. This study evaluated the association between vitamin D intake and breast cancer risk among women in a large prospective cohort study. ""Vitamin D intake of >800 IU/day appears to be associated with a small decrease in risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women. Studies evaluating all sources of vitamin D, especially sun exposure, are needed to fully understand the association between vitamin D and breast cancer risk."ReferenceRobien K, Cutler GJ, Lazovich D.
