17"x24" giclee on fine art paper $75I loved this woman's pose as she obviously was having a hard time deciding which confections to buy. The store is filled with patterns, shapes and reflections--an artist's dream, or a nightmare of detail depending on how you look at it. This scratchboard was originally done in black and white and I have been spending 3 days adding color to it in photoshop. I found this was a very slow, intense process and much slower than coloring a panel with inks or paints. But I also feel that it gives the drawing a certain quality of intesity that would be hard to do on a black surface like scratchboard. Here you can see a larger picture: http://www390.pair.com/naquaiya/confections-lg.jpgI'm always looking for new ways to attack a problem. Now if only I could be such a good girl with my New Year's resolutions.

5" x 7"Inspired by my many trips to county fairs over several summers, these two are working late. This could have been titled "night before the big show". It's all about his attentiveness and the willing posture of the calf. Boys this age are very concerned about getting it right, and many excel. Animals are wonderful teachers too.

7" x 11"Cheetah is concerned about his future. I wanted to portray the cheetah with an expression of concern. His body is thin and elongated to give us a signal of danger. He shows concern about his enviornment. Do we dare wonder how much time these beautiful animals have left on the earth?Technorati tags: art, artwork, artist, scratchboard, drawing, animals, animal drawings, cheetah, ecology, environment, wildlife art, wildlife

available, purchase from artist 14" x 11", $60This is an old art deco building in downdown Longview, WA. I was fascinated by the architecture of this 1920's art deco building --the bricks and the windows especially. Inside this elegant little shop are some very hep and lovely ladies who make their own hand made soaps, infusing products with an an array of herbal fragrances and intoxicating aromatic little wonderful, useless things. I thought it was an interesting dichotomy to see a motorcycle parked out front. Food for thought. hmmm......go here for the big picture

and Crowsscratchboard on clayboard
, 11" x 14" giclee $60+s/h from artist Crows suddenly fly off as their are startled from their chore of gathering wool for their nests. Their wooly benefactors don't seem to care. I have seen this happen and had to record it in a drawing. I wanted the sky to reflect the energy felt by the sudden flight so I abstracted it a little. There is a book by Henry Moore of nothing more than his pencil sketches of sheep and how different they looked to him each day from outside his summer country studio in Britain. Even when they were sheared they were expressive. I remember he said something about being fascinated how such a simple animal could convey such a complex set of emotions with such a simple little body. I agree. This drawing is my contribution to the sheep of the world.see the big picture here

Lately, hundreds of pigeons have taken up homesteading in, around, and on top of this car. Hope it never goes away but I'm sure someday someone will complain and it will become a thing of the past. Right now: enjoy. I do.click here to see the big picture

Scraperboard, 9" x 12"click here to see enlargementI wanted to capture a feeling of a moment of respite and reflection after a hard day's work. The soft light and enormous windows overlooking the river are like a reward. The chair is a hard chair and not very comfortable so this is not a recliner mode drawing, it's more of a grab a quick seat and be temporarily spellbound. I am excited about going beyond my traditional use of color. Here I added gouache over the black in some areas and then a karat liqua watercolor over that in another tone to give depth. I repeated this color in the rug. Some days I think my textile background has never left, only been asleep for 10 years.
