February 9, 2007 Friday Full Session
2007-02-10 16:14:08
We were anticipating a choppy day with small trading range, which seemed to be what we were getting in the morning.  However, the deadzone session (our lunchtime doldrums are between 11:45 AM EST - 1:45 PM EST) saw some high volume dumping which started at 12:30 PM EST.  There were some deadzone trigger calls issued, all of which were counter-trend.  The deadzone trigger trades were all stopped out (these were all counter-trend plays to get in on a possible bounce), which was the wrong side of the market to be on and a big clue that the market might end up being another strong trending type day rather than narrow range chop.  Note that we highly discourage deadzone trading, as we feel trades placed in this timeframe will end up being marginally profitable, but we issue deadzone signals anyways for customers who like to see/attempt all signals.  Deadzone trades are separated in to a different track record (the link to it is here http://www.puretick.com/dzd.html), and can be compar

MaxSpan (our 15 min opening range breakout/breakdown trade) required an end-of-day close at 4:00 PM EST today as its trailing portion was never stopped out on the trail stop.  The final result for MaxSpan was +10 on its first 2/3 and +10 on its trailing 1/3.  As mentioned in the morning’s blog, near the end of deadzone we finally got a break to the downside of our 12583 - 12604 trading range.  After a 50% retracement of the deadzone sell-off, the YM resumed its downward move to make new lows.  However, this was the final wave down for the day and the lowest low had been made here at about 2:33 PM EST.  There was one Official Room Call oversold trigger signal to go long at 2:50:13 PM EST after the new low of day had been made from an entry price of 12567 with a light position as the signal was against the filters.  The trade hit its profit target 1 (a standard +5 points from entry as per our new profit-taking rules for the track record).  Those room members choosing to s

There was no gap of any sort on the open and therefore no gap to play for the YM (Dow e-mini).  The opening price was below the daily pivot and the advancers-decliners opening positive, which shows neutral filters on market open.  However, the advancers-decliners quickly went below zero, which would make any rallies up to the daily pivot level a prime shorting opportunity (filters bearish).  That is exactly where our first trigger signal was issued with an early heads-up several minutes in advance for traders to look to short the daily pivot before the official signal was issued at 9:39:23 AM EST from a market entry of 12622.  Note that we normally wait for the 15 minute opening range to complete before issuing any signals (as the price positioning relative to the high and low of that range is important to our filter bias calculation) but this was a decent premise to short (had the 2/3 major filter elements bearish).  The price broke down in the morning, unable to rally even up t

We had a 38 point gap up today on the open.  Gap players who shorted the open looking for the gap to fill, should be under some intense heat as the market has wanted to go up, not down this morning/deadzone.  So far in the morning and deadzone (our lunchtime doldrums between 11:45 AM EST and 1:45 PM EST) the YM (Dow e-mini) is exhibiting characteristics of a strong trend up day, which tend to close near their highs.  The trading range so far as of the writing of this blog (1:24 PM EST) is 101 points.  We had two Official Room Call trigger signals and one MaxSpan signal (issued at 10:01:46 AM EST).  The YM (Dow e-mini) retraced about 50% from the morning open of 12622 at 9:30 AM EST to the morning’s first high of 12665 at 10:12 AM EST forming a rounding bottom base before resuming its upwards move.  The first Official Room Call short was issued at 9:34:00 AM EST but did not have much immediate downside from the entry point called of 12631 (there were i

We started the session with filters bullish (advance-declines positive and price trading far above the daily pivot, and no gap of significance.  Af first the market traded sideways in a narrow range, but the Bernanke speech caused the market to break out of our 15 min range on gigantic volume at 10:00 AM EST, causing our MaxSpan (15 minute opening range breakout/breakdown trend-following system) to fire a long signal at 10:01:53 AM EST with an entry price of 12717.  The first target of +10 on the first 2/3 was almost immediately achieved due to the massive buying.  MaxSpan is currently still trailing its remaining 1/3 as the price is priting 12752 at 12:53 PM EST (up 35 points as I am typing this sentence).  We had only one other Official Room Call signal which was to short the exhaustion on the first ramp-up.  The overbought trigger signal was issued at 10:11:56 AM EST, where the time and sales printed 12737 market price.  Alex got filled at 12739.  For those able to get a 127

The afternoon trading was choppy, but it would still have been better to go with the filters (e.g. go long) which remained bullish throughout the afternoon rather than go against them.  Although the YM did sell off from its 12687 1:08 PM EST swing high, there was solid support at the 12660 level, just a few ticks below the daily R2 pivot, and the price ended up closing near the highs of the day, making this a strong trend up day with a 103 point range.  Due to the strong close, it was a crippling day for gap players.  For example, those who shorted the opening price of 12622 at 9:30 AM EST and closed out there trade at 12677 at 4:00 PM EST should have incurred a 55 point loss.  This is not to say that the gap trade is a terrible trade, as it is shown to be profitable over time with a greater than 70% win rate.  However, the drawdowns can be great when they occur and one must know the risks (as with MaxSpan) and the account size necessary to weather drawdowns.  Before trying

DANGERS of trading in the ABYSS!
2007-02-14 05:03:28
Here’s a true story from the daily debacles at PureTick………… Don’t get TRAPPED with this mentality. Read this and be aware of the problem. Here’s a brief recap of events.. it was a dark and stormy night.. just kidding, lets proceed . . . Many traders in our group had a negative day last Friday! Lets be honest. It was a down right hanis bloody red day. Vegetarians across the land were even queezy hearing about these trades. I know how emotions can get the best of us. It’s our main enemy in trading. I felt we needed to talk about this so sent out a video on sticking to your setups Sunday night before Mondays trading hit. ( http://puretick.com/video/021107/ ) Still a lot of the traders carried that anger and frustration over from the weekend, and some did not even attempt to trade the following Monday. I was a bit disappointed to say the least. After all, I’d just talked about this mental sabotage in Sunday nights video. So what happene

We did get our close on the daily bar at new daily highs, although the YM (Dow e-mini) price tagged its daily upper bollinger bands and is very overbought on the daily chart.  We had one Official Room Call trigger signal this afternoon, which was a short issued at 2:11:47 PM EST where the price was printing 12769 on the time and sales.  A stop of 12681 was given for the trade.  Alex instructed new traders to try to get in at a better price of 12772, implying placing a limit order.  All limit orders placed at this time should theoretically have been filled as the price did trade through to 12776 at 2:22 PM EST.  Alex issued the “new traders exit here” signal at 2:26:40 PM EST as soon as the price was printing 12767 in order to try and get the new traders completely out at their +5 first targets.  The optimal downside for the trade would be 12765 (a small 1 minute timeframe valley on the 3:26 PM EST - 3:27 PM EST 1 minute candle) which is 7 points of downside from the

Although we did have a breakout to the upside of the morning’s 31 point trading range as the YM (Dow e-mini) made daily (and all-time) highs at 2:17 PM EST, the day’s trading range was only expanded by another 10 points.  This makes the daily bar on the YM the narrowest range bar in the last seven daily bars, or an “NR-7″ day with a 41 point range.  Per Alex, as volatility does alternate between high and low volatility, we might expect another range expansion soon with a high volatility trend day, perhaps not tomorrow (Friday) but in the near future.  Days following NR-7 days tend to exhibit a high probability of being trendy (opening and closing at the opposite ends of the daily bar) and having a range expansion.  Be cautious with tomorrow’s trading as it is an options expiration Friday, which tend to be tricky to trade, in addition to being a Friday before a three day weekend, implying possibly lower trading volume.  Monday, February 19 is Preside

We went in to the morning with bullish filters, and a playable gap.  The 10 point gap up was filled today, and there was a pro-signal issued by Alex at 9:33:26 AM EST to short for the gap fill which had the price showing 12771 on the time and sales when the signal occured.  Those who shared their profitability on the signal announced gains of between 4-6 points.  Note that this very first trade does have the Official text stamp but will not appear in the track record due to it being a gap play.  So far yesterday’s close of 12665 (the gap close level) has acted as a decent support area.  Gap fill levels tend to act as a pivot once closed.  Alex warned us at the open to expect a volatility contraction, and trading condusive to fading the extremes, such as bollinger bands.  Bernanke again moved the market at 10:00 AM EST, which cause a breakout of our 15 minute opening range and for the MaxSpan (15 minute opening range breakout/breakdown system) signal to fire long at 10:0

There were no Official Room Call triggers called in the afternoon, as the volume was really lacking.  Although we did get some weak signals, none were worthy of Official Room Call status.  The trading range finally broke to the upside late in the afternoon, as there was a choppy ramp up (for lack of a better way to describe a buying spike which seemed to come out of nowhere) which started at 3:22 PM EST that broke the daily YM pivot and 15 minute opening range high, making new highs for the day before the close.  It was clear MaxSpan would neither hit its standard -40 point stop or +10 point target 1, therefore CajunSniper advised traders that they could close out the trade early at 3:22 PM EST.  The official signal closing price for MaxSpan is 12786, which puts MaxSpan at a -16 point loss today.  Today’s trading range only expanded by 4 points to 29 points.  Today is an NR-8 day, or the narrowest range day in the last 8 daily bars.  Therefore the chances of a volatili

The 13 point gap-down was essentially filled, early this morning, coming just one tick shy of the full fill of 12767.  Per Alex gap players were already selling at the daily pivot the longs they had taken at the open which is 5 ticks shy of yesterday’s settlement/close.  Our first Official Room Call trading signal was to short the daily pivot level, which was a very good setup considering that the filters started out the morning bearish, with advancers-decliners going negative early on.  We normally like to wait for the 15 minute opening range to establish itself, but sometimes there will be those very nice early opportunities.  The signal was issued at 9:37:33 AM EST when the time and sales was showing 12784.  Alex issued the “new traders exit balance at market” signal at 9:45:20 AM EST when the time and sales were showing 12779.  This allowed the signal to achieve its +5 points target 1.  Real-life profitability levels as announced by room members mostly

Since we did not break for lunch, today’s blog/podcast will report on the entire day’s activities and only have one audio transcript for download.  Normally we have a separate blog and audio transcript for the morning and afternoon sessions. Morning Session  We were off to an excellent start this morning.  There was a near gap fill, as the third three minute bar from the open (the 9:36 AM EST - 9:39 AM EST bar) came 2 ticks shy of Friday’s close/settlement price of 12787 (per Alex some gap players were going long on the open to shoot for the 14 point gap down fill).  We had an excellent pros-only signal (a.k.a. a personal account trade) issued to fade (go counter to) the daily pivot level of 12781.  As you might recall, there was a similar short setup on Friday Feburary 16, 2007 which also was issued early in the morning at nearly the same time as today’s pros-only signal (although Friday’s signal was made an Official Room Call).  The daily pivo

An adverse reaction to the CPI numbers announced at 8:30 AM EST got the YM (Dow e-mini) off to a bearish start as there was some premarket selling.  We opened at 9:30 AM EST with bearish filters as the YM price was below the daily YM pivot and advancers-decliners (the difference between all green stocks on the NYSE versus red stocks) started out negative.  Our first signal was to short at 9:41:46 EST where the tape was showing 12759 which was an exhaustion on a test from below of the current 15 minute opening range high at that time.  As you room members might have noticed, our trigger signals like to get in to trades after the price has exhausted in one direction or the other.  Alex instructed us to use a 15 point stop and would be targeting 12754 as his first scale-out point (he had gotten a 12760 fill in his personal account, which is 1 tick better than my observation of the tape at the entry buzzer).  The signal’s +5 first target was achieved.  The “new trader

There were two Official Room Call signals issued in the afternoon.  Our stance for the afternoon was to look for a retracement of the morning’s down move to short and also to lighten up on position sizes to protect the morning’s gains.  We did not really get as high of a retracement level to short, as we would have liked.  The first signal was at 2:56:39 PM EST with instructions to short from a price of 12788 or better.  The signal did reach it’s standard +5 first target, as the “new traders suggest exit balance at market” signal was announced as the time and sales were showing 12679.  This is 9 points of downside for the signal from the suggested entry price to the “new traders get out here” alert.  Real-life profitability levels as announced by room members ranged between +5-8 points.  The second Official Room call was issued at 3:34:44 PM EST where the time and sales were showing 12698, with a warning to either take it on the simu

You got in to trading for more freedom?
2007-02-23 05:01:42
Let the truth be known. Trading IS a serious job. Its a fact that 90% of traders fail, so we must work even harder to make sure we are at the top of our game. If you got in to this profession for freedom or to be able to set your own work hours, you may be in for a rude awakening. I put in more hours preparing for trading , studying and learning then I did at any job I’ve ever had. I’ve seen traders log on to their trading accounts late or miss out on good trades because they were playing games or chatting on the phone. It’s the disciplined people who start their day on time with a routine who will ultimately make it. Imagine what would happen at a job if you showed up 30 minutes late every other day. You’d be fired in an expeditious fashion. You are your own boss and as your own boss you should be strict on yourself. After your earning consistently and followed a plan, reward yourself with some time off. We need good trading plans as well as lifestyle plan

We started the day with a 9 point gap up on the YM (Dow e-mini) at the 9:30 AM EST open. The first trading signal issued for the day was a gap trade. Gap trades have inherently more risk, as the stop level used is a lot wider. Some gap players do not use a point stop but rather will close their trade out on the close (a time stop). This is what Alex warned us he was doing and the short signal was issued at 9:32:55 AM EST where the time and sales were showing 12775. A scale-in point was specified for 12778 and the scale-out points (profit takwere specified for 12769 and 12765. Both of Alex’s personal account trade targets were hit as the daily YM pivot level of 12761 was tagged and tested from above. Some room members did take the signal (per room members’ posts sharing their profitability) and got between +6-11 points on the trade. The gap fill level of 12758 (yesterday’s close/settlement price) was just a few ticks under the daily YM pivot level of 12761 and

There was one Official Room Call trigger signal issued in the afternoon, which was profitable.  Note that the track record reflects two entries, one at 2:54 PM EST and one at 2:55 PM EST but in actuality it is a single trade where there was an initial entry of 12677 and a pare-in (scale-in) higher of 12781.  The signal was a short issued at 2:53:50 PM EST where the time and sales were showing 12676.  An intial stop was specified for 12693.  Sometimes Alex will instruct that a scale-in higher is possible and specifies a limit order price to get in.  The plan is to add at the limit order price or better and take the added contracts off at the original entry point for the signal or to take the added contracts off at +5 points profit from the scale-in entry price.  The original stop is kept at the same level.  The original entry for the signal got +6 points and the scale-in higher achieved +5 points.  For those new to our service, please read our guidelines for following signals

We opened on the YM (Dow e-mini) with a 10 point gap down.  Note that we have started applying the buzzer alert and text macro for the gap trade, which is really a pros-only signal, so new traders be aware.  The risk level (e.g. stop taken) is much higher on the gap trade and MaxSpan, so is not suitable for those with smaller accounts.  We advise that before you take these two signals in real cash, that you practice them for an ample amount of time on the simulator in order to become familiar/comfortable with managing them.  Of course, please also become familiar with the setup rules, as detailed in the following forum:  Setup RULES, Scalp, Range and Swing Trading (members)  Often the gap trade (which uses no stop and is closed out at the cash close of 4 PM EST) and MaxSpan can come under some intense pressure and might cause the unwary to panic out.  Alex’s version of the gap trade was issued at 9:31:31 AM EST where the time and sales were showing 12688.  Athough Friday

Today was a decent trading day despite the wacky market action. Alex started out by taking a gap fade play off of the open. The trade worked out beautifully for everyone who decided to jump in. Most gap traders will take half their profits at half a gap fill. Please see our forum entitled ’setup rules’ for more information on playing the gap or what a gap fade is. Max Span took a breakdown short at 9:54. In additon to the max span & gap play, there were 4 other trigger calls today and we ended the day in the green. Alex warned traders not to over trade on Monday ’s and Fridays which tend to be our least profitable trading days over all. Most of the disciplined traders had a good trading day. After Tuesdays carnage, most people did not quiet what to expect. The last day of the month can be particularly hard to trade due to window dressing and what not. There were six trades called Wednesday and five of those were winners. Max Span completed its run in under one 8minute bar. The volatility was still above average. We’re feeling the effects of Tuesdays action still. Alex spent a lot of time teaching while he tried to keep most of our traders from giving back Tuesdays gains. The market did end the day in the green as it tried to recover. The room had a discussion on how many contracts you should be trading. Alex suggest that users trade no more then ONE contract for every $5,000 in their account. Newbies should only be trading one per $15,000 in their account. Don’t have $5,000? Try using the free simulator from Infinity.

The roaring volatility continues in the YM! We have been a customed to using stops any where from 10 to 18 points in width. The market has had wide swings ever since last Tuesdays plunge of death. Stops that are less then 20 points wide usually get blown out from wiggle! This is taking some getting used to but as you can see from our track record we are adapting. Markets are always changing. It’s good to keep an open mind and be ready to adjust your plan as necessary. This is why auto trading systems don’t work forever. Until someone develops an intelligent self adjusting system, a discretionary trader will always be able to beat a robotic trading program. Today was also the first day of the trading execution contest. It was a tough day but Monday s are often tough. Looking forward to picking off some profits tomorrow. Thanks and enjoy your evening!

My heart started to pound for a second as I realized I’d missed the opening bell. Then my brain actually kicked in and said “Wait a friggin minute, its Sunday ”.. Ahh sleeping in.. what a joy. From this point on I will be taking over the blog responsibilities of Bearishtrader. He has a lot on his plate and would rather concentrate on his studies and trading then doing paper work. I usually will only post a blog when I have something meaningful to say. There is no reason to give you guys recaps of our sessions twice a day due to the fact that we have all our records, logs and audio on-line. Wear BRASS Knuckles on the Road to Success
2007-03-15 02:40:47
Good day, Last weekend we posted a statement from a newbie trader who trades with us. Within the first few minutes we had requests to see more from this person. She is a 1-3 lot trader that has been making between $50 and $200 a day. Thats about a 2% gain on her account in a SINGLE DAY which beats any savings account hands down. Can you make $1000 a day with a $8000 account? Maybe if your Borsalino. Consistant gains are possibile if you apply what you’ve learned with minimal emotions. If it will inspire you guys to stick to the plan, we will continue to update on her progress as she agrees. Below is are links to her statement pages from Infinity Brokerage. Of course, her sensitive information has been blurred out. Keep up the positive attitude and enjoy the rest of your evening. It’s a day on which contracts for stock index futures, stock index options, stock options and single stock futures (SSF) ALL expire. This is similar to the triple witching hour, except that the quadruple witching hour sees also the expiry of SSFs. Quadruple witching days occur on the third Friday of March, June, September and December. We can expect a lot of choppy action and strange action today. Very rarely do you get huge trend moves on expiration type days. Tread lightly and no revenge trading! Geoff / CajunSNiper
