UK iPhones spill beans on 1.1.2 2007-11-05 09:07:53 Once again, it appears that our friends across the pond get a bit of a jump on us when it comes to checking out the next version of the iPhone’s software. Back in September, they got a sneak peek at the infamous version 1.1.1. Now, ahead of the iPhone’s official drop in the UK on Friday, some British sources are reporting that the models are running version 1.1.2.
Differences? Mainly it seems to be a matter of International keyboard layouts (which we also saw in the UK version of 1.1.1 though they didn’t show up in the US flavor). The only other difference reported at the moment is that the scary TIFF exploit appears to have been plugged. Which just means hackers will have to find a new way into the OS—and undoubtedly, they will.
Me? I just hope that 1.1.2 brings with it a fix for the 1.1.1 battery blues.

UK launch details for you, guv'nor 2007-11-06 08:59:30 Despite the fact that I did live in the UK for a little while, I won’t incur your wrath and raucous laughter by attempting to write the following post like I have a British accent. That’s your second reason for celebration this week: the first is that on Friday the iPhone arrives on your shores—consider it our gift to you, in return for all that you’ve given us Americans (by which we mean, of course, Beatlemania).
Apple’s announced some details
of the UK launch: as we know, the iPhone will be available from Apple Stores, O2 Stores, and Carphone Warehouse (which has to be possibly my favorite name for a retail store, ever). As in the US, the iPhone goes on sale in the evening, though Apple says that doors open at the rather bizarre time of 6:02PM. Genius Bars will be ready to offer support, and starting Saturday morning, you can go into the Apple Store for training.
You’ll be able to purchase up to two iPhones per person, which you can activate via

BlackBerry 8130 makes its way to Telus 2007-11-06 04:16:00 Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Telus
Mobility, EV-DO, CDMA
It seems only fitting that RIM would launch its BlackBerry
Pearl 2 in the motherland, doesn’t it? Available immediately, the 8130 is on sale with the carrier for a penny under $200 CAD on a three-year contract, $400 on a two-year, and $450 on a one-year, and a whopping $500 without a contract. Just in case the features slipped your mind, we’ll run ‘em past you again: EV-DO radio, 2 megapixel camera with video recording, Bluetooth with A2DP, media player, and expandable memory via microSD. If anyone up there has a pocketbook brave enough to bear such pricing, sound off in comments and let us know what you think of the latest ‘Berry.
[Thanks, Don C.]

HTC Omni = Google Dream? 2007-11-06 03:01:00 Filed under: Handsets, HTC, Android
C’mon, you knew this was coming. Not a moment after Google
does its big reveal on the Android OS and forthcoming multi-manufacturer GPhone, the rumor mill has already starting churning with wild imaginings and fantastic leaps of logic. A not-so gigantic jump comes as speculation that HTC’s Omni — which we first heard about nearly a year ago — is actually the phone that has been referred to as the “Dream
,” Google’s OS demo unit. We have to admit, there are some similarities between the two, not the least of which are the 3-inch by 5-inch size, rectangular touchscreen, full QWERTY that swivels out (which according to this earlier rendering, goes in more than one direction), and a beveled edge that “nestles in the palm.” We remind you, of course, that this is just the first in a long line of rumors trying to pinpoint the “real” GPhone — HTC or otherwise — so don’t get t
WiebeTech HotPlug lets cops move desktops without shutting them down 2007-11-06 00:24:00
We’ve seen some interesting computer forensics gear from WiebeTech before, like the Mouse Jiggler USB key that prevents a system from locking the screen or going to sleep by subtly shaking the mouse cursor, and the company’s latest addition to the investigator’s toolkit, the HotPlug LT, solves an equally basic problem: how to move a desktop without powering it down. The HotPlug allows cops to seize machines without powering them down by switching power to a UPS, using some interesting power-management voodoo. The investigator simply plugs the HotPlug into the computer’s powerstrip, and then unplugs the strip and plugs it into the UPS — and takes the whole system away. If the machine is plugged directly into the wall, WiebeTech also has options for directly piercing the power cable or hijacking the outlet itself. Bottom line: the Man’s getting your machine, like it or not. Peep a vid of the HotPlug in action after the break.

This never happened on Lindsay Wagner’s watch 2007-11-14 19:01:58 A few weeks back, we mentioned an iPhone sighting on the TV series Cane, which, in turn, sparked a nice little thread in which people reported other TV shows in which the smartphone had a walk-on role. Add NBC’s Bionic Woman to that list, though possibly not in the manner that Steve Jobs and Company would have preferred.
As reported at iPhone Matters, a recent episode of the series about a woman who is also bionic featured a scene in which a character gabs on his iPhone — problematically, the iPhone is being held upside down.
If you look at the video in which this pic was taken from, he uses it correctly for the first part of the scene. Then, after a scene cut, it is upside down!
Continuity editors never had this problem with the CRT-based iMac.

Sony Ericsson releasing P5i superphone mid-2008? 2007-11-14 14:27:00 Filed under: Handsets, SonyEricsson
, Symbian, GSM, HSDPA, UMTS, HSUPA
Originally rumored for an announcement as early as tomorrow, icaka over on Esato’s forums is now reporting that Sony Ericsson
’s new be-all, end-all superphone — the so-called P5i — has been sent back to the shop for retooling and won’t make a public debut until May or June of next year. While it could be argued that the P1i is hot (or at least warm) off the factory line, a top-5 phone manufacturer certainly can’t rest on its laurels — and if the listed specs here are even close to accurate, they’re staying up on their game: think 2.8 inch VGA display, integrated GPS, WiFi, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, HSUPA (yes, UPA, not DPA), and 128MB of RAM on board. Even better, it’ll all be packed into a slim, light slider form factor that allegedly looks something like this concept art. Sounds just a smidge too good to be true, we know. Then again, by the time mid 2
