Pele
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Pele's Elephant was re-released by Polyvinyl in Summer 2003. The album had become a staple in the CD carousel the previous Winter and the question was raised why such a wonderful album was out of print. Originally the album was released in 1999 on Sign Language Records as a limited-run with little retail distribution. Despite the lack of availability, Elephant had become the record most Pele fans

Everlovely Lightningheart
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The impression that I got from various official sources for the band is that Everlovely Lightningheart are some kind of artistic commune that have tapped into some abstract spiritual plane and have brought back enlightenment in the form of music. While there is a lot of beautiful music on this album, Everlovely Lightningheart are far from the cultural monument that they're portrayed as. Cusp is

Ennio Morricone
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Morricone was born in Rome and was educated at the Conservatory of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in the trumpet and composition under Goffredo Petrassi, and choral music and choral direction. In the beginning, he regarded himself to be destined to compose modern classical music, but this changed when he was invited to write arrangements for popular Italian songs, something that was

Crippled Black Phoenix
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Having a member of Mogwai in your lineup and making post-rock does admittedly set expectations fairly high. Although not entirely responsible for the genre itself, Mogwai were integral in getting it "out there' and have recorded some of the most important additions to it's canon, and now in 2006 the sound is still going strong. Crippled Black Phoenix takes Mogwai bassist Dominic Aitchison and

Drosselbart (req. by Gijs)
1970-01-01 00:59:59
One and only album from Munich band. This album stands out as one of the most provocative and aggressive efforts from Germany anno '70 with loud vocals, harsh guitars and swirling organs sounds. It is close to impossible to find more frantic and vicious songs like "Engel des todes" and "Böse buben". The German sung vocals of Peter Randt really have a attitude of telling the rest of the world to

Mouth of the Architect & Kenoma
1970-01-01 00:59:59
When I started to write this review I wasn't really sure what direction this introduction was going to take. So I decided to let the album play on repeat and just sit back and in my chair and look outside at the rain. I closed my eyes and proceeded to relax, allowing the soft sound of the rain falling to fuse with the lush tones of the album for one extremely comforting experience. Thus, this

Circle
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The album seems to divide into two parts. The first four tracks flow together in sort of suite, burbling beautifully and hypnotically...just so so pleasant. No heavy riffs, nothing edgy at all. Then there's a pause, and the remaining two tracks reveal something of a darker, more mysterious sound. Just a bit though, like a bright sunny day edging towards twilight, the knowledge of the coming night

Brant Bjork
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Meet Brant Bjork , the JJ Cale of the Californian Desert. He already was co-architect of the heavy psychedelic stoner sound with Kyuss (he played drums on their first three albums), was a member of Fu Manchu during the latter half of the nineties and is steadily creating an impressive catalogue of his own. If you expect his albums to contain the thunderous drumming he delivered when he was with

Tides
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Tides have undergone a number of changes since we last heard from them on 2005's Resurface. Most notably, the band has added a second guitar player in Tim Fickeisen and they've picked up and moved from rural upstate New York for the metropolis of Boston. And even with those dramatic changes, Tides remain a focused rock outfit playing airy instrumental post-rock music. From Silence is comprised

Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The word 'artist' these days is used to refer to pretty much any musician, but few songwriters or performers approach their musical life with the degree of intense concern as does Jesse Sykes . Although originally a visual artist, Sykes sings that "only music sets my soul free." She's always, however, brought a deep visual sense to her textually (and texturally) rich songwriting. Her new album

Manatees
1970-01-01 00:59:59
There's something about the name Manatees that has the uninitiated (but about to be blown away) listener expecting passages of calm ambience, a series of soundscapes ideal for drifting away to, as if sailing a still sea, the gentlest breeze propelling your vessel. Ha. Manatees are brothers of doom and no mistake: this three-piece carve their works from solidified sludge, they grind out riffs so

William S. Burroughs
2007-03-02 17:00:00
One of the best Burroughs recordings, Dead City Radio features the writer reading five previously unreleased pieces, along with selections from several of his books. The acerbic Burroughs wit is at its finest on many of these selections, and he even takes a shot at singing on one track. Musical contributors to this project include Sonic Youth, Donald Fagen, Lenny Pickett, Cheryl Hardwick, Chris

Nadja

There are plenty of copycats using that tool, a few innovative performers, some entertainers, and then there are those writers on the fringe that seem to be a part of the scene but ultimately don't fit satisfyingly into its machinations. Aidan Baker's affair with abstract music places him somewhere in that final group, a group far more interesting than the often proclaimed masters of the genre.

Slow Horse
2007-03-02 12:45:00
Much like the name implies, Slow Horse is a very trudging, heavy beast of burden, as their six song self titled album demonstrates. Falling very vaguely in the same category as Kyuss but not particularly having the desert feel or stoner rock implication, Slow Horse comes across as a very brooding band that pulls it off quite well. The song structures are somewhat based on jam sections but the

Circle
2007-03-04 06:55:00
Limited LP that catches a session Circle recorded exclusively for WFMU during their US tour, on 19/9/05. Comprising two lengthy pieces taking up a side each, 'The Greatest Kingdom' and 'The Ghost of the Highway', it focuses on their often spacey improv underpinning and applies new meaning to a vision which strides powerfully over the line dividing apocalyptic dread from a semblance of hope.

Dystopia

For years, Dystopia have been punishing ears with their combination of dark complex music, misanthropic lyrics, and twisted emotions. Lustmord / King Buzzo

With sound design & production by Lustmord and guitar & vocals by King Buzzo of the Melvins, Juggernaut unleashes four tracks¹ worth of menacing ambient tremors, boomeranged drones and ominous sonic moonscapes in swell after unsettling swell of creeping electronic deviance. Initially recorded for an art opening by hot-rod enthusiast / notorious tit man Chris "Coop" Cooper in August 2004, this

I can think of very few albums I have ever purchased, listened to once, and sold back to the store. Generally, I am a pretty forgiving guy and I can find something worth listening to on a disc. However, YOB just was not my cup of tea. I don't know what it was, but after I listened to the latest YOB release I was not only unsatisfied, but also thoroughly annoyed. Maybe I got hung up on the vocals

Terence McKenna

Terence McKenna was the Magellan of psychedelic head space, and humanity's first ambassador to the hyperdimensional machine elves of the Eschaton. When he got out of school, he set off for the Amazon, where he "

Ulver
2007-03-10 09:57:00
Taking their name from the Norewgian word for wolf, Ulver is a black metal band employing both noisy death-metal blasting and more relaxed, morose acoustic instrumentation, depending on the concept of their work. Led by vocalist Garm, Ulver recorded two concept albums beginning in 1995; Bergtatt detailed a Norse legend in which maidens are abducted by denizens of the underworld to live in their

Englar alheimsins, or Angels of the Universe, was a critically-acclaimed Icelandic film about a man's descent into despair and schizophrenia. This being the soundtrack to the film, one might expect a pretty moody score, and that's indeed what we have here. Sigur Rós (most likely the reason you're reading this review) only contributes the last two tracks; the first fifteen are all Hilmar Örn

We Followed Tigers … is a mysterious force in the music world. The band has no webpage and only offers a Myspace and PureVolume page which are equally uninformative about the band. I have two pieces of music accredited to the band, an EP from 2004, …And Then We Were Killed, and one from 2005, So Much for Summer, but I can't say for sure that either could be considered a "release" in the general

Kalas
2007-03-13 17:40:00
A brand new Matt Pike's project is always good news. This time, assuming only the vocalist's role, leaving the rest to a bunch of (not amateurs at all) players, coming from different music backgrounds such as punk/hardcore. But Kalas' debut ain't anything like that. It's straight, modern doom rock, with really heavy downtuned guitars, and the unavoidable Matt Pike's always carrying scent.
