(AFP/File)
Germany’s Finance Minister Peer Steinbruck warned against going back on tough spending restrictions which have helped relaunch the economy, ahead of a crunch meeting of the ruling coalition on Sunday.
"This will not work with me," Steinbruck said, in an interview published Saturday, of the growing pressure within his centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) for bigger social benefits.
Leaders of the conservative Christian Union alliance, which has governed with the SPD for the past two years, are to meet in Berlin on Sunday in a bid to overcome the crisis caused by SPD calls for an easing of spending restrictions.
Steinbruck, the chief architect of the recent success of Europe’s biggest economy, told the Lei Read more:finance

US military spurs robot car creations with big money race 2007-11-04 05:58:18 VICTORVILLE, California (AFP)
Robotic cars competed Saturday in a high-stakes race organized by the US military, which hopes to make driverless vehicles weapons on urban battlefields by 2015.
The competition was staged at an unused military based in Victorville, a California town 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of Los Angeles, and promises a first-place prize of two million dollars.
Cars and trucks with electronic brains, sensors, radar and other sophisticated gear crafted to eliminate the need for humans at steering wheels had to maneuver 100 kilometers along mock city streets in less than six hours.
The event began with mechanics, one-by-one, moving the eleven competitors to the starting line. At the fateful moment, drivers abandoned the vehicles, which began moving on their own, eliciting cheers from thousands of spectators.
The cars picked up pace as they found their way along streets of the closed-down base without any help. Forty other cars, driven by people, set out with th

Fast Food with a Low Fat Flair 2007-11-03 11:54:01
So often I’m asked, "Are all fast foods bad for you?" and "Which is the best fast food place for low fat diets?" Questions like these take me back to a time when I remember how much smaller fast food meals used to be . . . when chicken and fish arrived only deep-fried . . . and one’s choice of beverage did not include skim milk. Times have changed in the fast food industry, and certainly for the better. For those of you who frequent the pick-up windows, check out these helpful hints for lower fat fare.
Burgers and Fries
They had it right in the beginning when they came out with small burgers. Common sense tells us that the bigger the burger, the more saturated fat - .the kind that your liver loves to make cholesterol out of. It’s no surprise that the added cheese, bacon, mayonnaise and special sauces serve to top the fat off. Helpful hint: choose your toppings wisely. Ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles offer no extra fat.

Defending Against Breast Cancer: Arming yourself with knowledge is your best defence against breast cancer. 2007-11-03 11:45:18
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW. Breast cancer is common. The older you get, the higher your risk of breast cancer. At age 30, the risk is one in 6,000 per year. At 40, one in 1,200; at 50, one in 550 per year. Early detection is the key. You can detect a lump through a breast self-exam, a breast exam by a health professional or a mammogram. Most breasts are lumpy during a woman’s menstrual cycle. If a lump doesn’t go away after a full cycle, see your doctor immediately. Remember, in many cases, a lumpectomy followed by radiation is as effective as a mastectomy (a mastectomy removes the entire breast, a lumpectomy removes a section of the breast).
WHAT YOU CAN DO. Maintain a well-balanced diet. Reduce fat and eat more nutritious, high-fibre foods. Exercise on a regular basis. Learn how to examine your breasts and examine them monthly. Know your breasts well enough to notice a change. Schedule annual mammograms. A mammogram can detect a lump two years before you can feel it.

China To Repeal Travel Restrictions On HIV-Carriers 2007-11-09 10:12:44 China is set to repeal immigration laws that restrict people with HIV/AIDS traveling to the country, a health ministry official and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria recently announced.
The travel restrictions have been a hindrance, which block individuals who are HIV-positive from entering China to attend conferences on AIDS and is seen as reinforcing stigmas against those living with the disease.
"China has decided to change its immigration laws, scrapping travel restrictions," Michel Kazatchkine, executive director of the Global Fund, told a news conference. "The new law, which hopefully will be passed in the coming months, will be in line with the global conventions, which recognize that travel restrictions for HIV-positive people do not have any public health value," he said.
Vice Minister of Health Huang Jiefu did not give a timeline for the change, but said China was committed to making the amendment. "Modifying laws and regulation Read more:China

Congratulations on the Book Award, and Welcome to the Scrutiny 2007-11-08 20:51:35
BRAY, Ireland — The Man Booker Prize carries with it a check for £50,000 (about $105,000), a guaranteed increase in book sales and, for little-known authors, instant popular recognition. But the spotlight sometimes falls in unexpected places.
That is what happened to the Irish writer Anne Enright, who won the 2007 Booker for “The Gathering” last month. The novel, in which a woman tries to untie her family’s tangled past as she brings her brother’s body home to be buried in Ireland, has won glowing praise, as Ms. Enright’s books generally do. But almost immediately the praise was intermingled with criticism over a recent essay by Ms. Enright in The London Review of Books.

Conservative Authors Sue Publisher 2007-11-08 20:46:07 Five authors have sued the parent company of Regnery Publishing, a Washington imprint of conservative books, charging that the company deprives its writers of royalties by selling their books at a steep discount to book clubs and other organizations owned by the same parent company.
In a suit filed in United States District Court in Washington yesterday, the authors Jerome R. Corsi, Bill Gertz, Lt. Col. Robert (Buzz) Patterson, Joel Mowbray and Richard Miniter state that Eagle Publishing, which owns Regnery, “orchestrates and participates in a fraudulent, deceptively concealed and self-dealing scheme to divert book sales away from retail outlets and to wholly owned subsidiary organizations within the Eagle conglomerate.”

Pregnant Exercisers Test Limits 2007-11-08 20:41:33
JAMES PIVARNIK, the director of the Human Energy Research Laboratory at Michigan State University, is all in favor of a woman exercising when she is pregnant. But some of the athletes he studied seemed to know no bounds.
“I had a woman, she was huge, and she was running seven-minute miles up to Week 39,” Dr. Pivarnik said. “It looked like she had a basketball under her shirt.”
It was, he said, close to the pace she had run before her pregnancy.
He was worried, but not about the baby. Dr. Pivarnik was concerned about the woman’s abdominal muscles and whether they would be pulled with all that jostling. “But she claimed she was not uncomfortable, so who was I to argue?” he said.

Latest Additive at Gas Pumps Google 2007-11-08 06:58:23 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Lost drivers soon will be able to Google
for help at the pump.
As part of a partnership to be announced Wednesday, the online search leader will dispense driving directions at thousands of gasoline pumps across the United States beginning early next month.
The pumps, made by Gilbarco Veeder-Root, include an Internet connection and will display Google’s mapping service in color on a small screen. Motorists will be able to scroll through several categories to find local landmarks, hotels, restaurants and hospitals selected by the gas station’s owner.
After the driver selects a destination, the pump will print out directions. Eventually, Gilbarco Veeder-Root hopes to enable motorists to type in a specific address and get directions.
"We think the service will create more customer loyalty for retailers," said Gilbarco Veeder-Root spokeswoman Lucy Sackett.
Greensboro, N.C.-based Gilbarco Veeder-Root will initially offer the service in about
