A good bedtime book to read to the little ones
2007-10-29 21:30:26
As a young girl, my sister Mary occasionally read the Little Prince to me at bedtime in FRENCH. I did not understand the language, but I listened intently as she read the book to me, as if I understood everything she was reading. It worked, I fell right off to sleep. Goodnight.

My Favorite Poem
2007-10-29 21:13:32
When I was little, every night my sister Mary would read me bedtime stories; sometimes it would be poetry. I remember this one she would read. One I never forgot. Perhaps you know it too. Goodnight. Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892–1950) Renascence and Other Poems. 1917. 5. Afternoon on a Hill I WILL be the gladdest thing Under the sun! I will touch a hundred flowers And not pick one. I will look at cliffs and clouds With quiet eyes, Watch the wind bow down the grass, And the grass rise. And when lights begin to show Up from the town, I will mark which must be mine, And then start down!

The woman in the mirror
2007-10-26 23:01:04
Michael Jackson had a hit back in the 80’s called “Man in the Mirror”. When it came out, I was in such awe of its lyrics. I was in my senior year at the University of Massachusetts, in Amherst (UMass), and I had spent time really learning about myself. I grew up in a predominately white community, that had a population size of 13,146. Of the population size, 4% were non-white and 96% were white. My high school graduation class had less than 100 students. It was the type of community where you knew everyone and everything in the community. Going away to UMass was a wake up call for me – learning about social injustice, black and white issues, violence, starvation, and hatred. There were times when I ran and hid from the reality of the world and would return to my safe and quiet small town. I had befriended a Jewish family in my senior year, the same year that Farrakhan came to campus. I went to listen to him as a learning experience. My Jewish friends understood my

Stupid-Crazy Drivers
2007-11-04 19:01:34
Ok, so like we are driving to my kids football game. It was an away game and the drive was like an hour. So we are driving, listening to music, laughing, chatting, basically excited about the possibility of kicking Westminster’s butts, when all of a sudden, TRAFFIC. Ok, so like there is usually no traffic on this little side country road, but for some damn reason, there was TRAFFIC. Now for any of you that know me, TRAFFIC is my least favorite thing. I go BONKERS with TRAFFIC. Ok, so we are stuck in traffic - we roll the windows down and look out and the car that is 3 cars in front of us, has basically STOPPED in the middle of the road. We’re trying to figure out what’s going on. Meanwhile, a car that is 2 cars in front of us pulls into the shoulder, puts on the hazards. The driver gets out of the car, then gets back in. We are like “what the heck….”? Naturally, horns start blowing, there are at least 50 cars behind us, and now, in the op

Butterfly Kisses – a short story about the crossroads of love.
2007-11-02 15:29:17
Chapter 1“ I hate how much I love you; I hate how much I need you”, Gabe sang along with her new Rihanna ipod download as she got dressed for work.  The previous night she had been up late chatting with her best friend Ciara about Lionel.  Gabe and Lionel had admired each other for a long time.  They became instant friends at their last job, but layoffs caused them to lose touch.  Years had gone by when Gabe was out doing her routine shopping.  This particular day she was on a hunt for red stilettos for an upcoming gala she and Ciara had been invited to, when from a far she thought she spotted Lionel in front of Tiffany’s.  She got flustered, and quickened her step to get a closer look.  As she got closer, she realized that it was in fact him. “Lionel, Lionel” she shouted as she ran to catch up to him.  As she approached him, he turned toward her with a smile.  His smile still had a spell on her.  She stopped in her steps, and Lionel walked towards her, showing

“I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: Try to please everybody.” - Herbert B. Swope “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” - Maya Angelou “I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.”   - May Angelou “Don’t take any wooden nickels.” - originates back to the 1800’s, but a daily repeated quote of Rennie E. McLaughlin (my dad)

Bed Sheets
2007-10-31 19:50:32
An extremely modest man was in the hospital for a series of tests, the last of which had left his bodily systems extremely upset. Upon making several false alarm trips to the bathroom, he decided the latest episode was another and stayed put. He suddenly filled his bed with diarrhea and was embarrassed beyond his ability to remain rational. In a complete loss of composure he jumped out of bed, gathered up the bed sheets, and threw them out the hospital window. A drunk was walking by the hospital when the sheets landed on him. He started yelling, cursing, and swinging his arms violently trying to get the unknown things off, and ended up with the soiled sheets in a tangled pile at his feet. As the drunk stood there, unsteady on his feet, staring down at the sheets, a hospital security guard, (barely containing his laughter), and who had watched the whole incident, walked up and asked, “What the heck is going on here?” The drunk, still staring down replied: “I think I ju

Bugged - Need Support from Other Bloggers!
2007-11-08 21:07:48
Sorry folks I am just not in my normal up beat mood today - I am bugged. Bugged by what, you ask? Well, guys I am really bugged by how people misinterpret others without even bothering to ask for an interpretation. I mean really, what happens when you ass-u-me? Yep, you make an ass of you and me! “Who cares!” Some will shout. And you know what, your absolutely right, but come on, we are humans and we humans have feelings and we humans get bugged. Today, I find myself offended by the misinterpretation of my blog. “Why are you doing a blog - is it some sort of therapy prescribed by a therapist?” “I just don’t get it, it’s just a series of your ramblings” “Keep your thoughts to yourself”. “Oh my, others are going to read what you write, won’t you be embrassed?” Oh the list goes on……. My response has basically been: I blog because I want to. I blog because I like to write. I blog b

All Kidding Aside
2007-11-07 07:07:59
Pretend. We all play it don’t we? We’ll I’ve been pretending that everything is GREAT - all the time, when in actuality it’s not. This song came on the radio this morning, that reminded me, that I don’t have to pretend, what bugs me must be said, I must be honest with myself and those around me. You are seated on your throne in heaven And You see all of us down here And You have promised You will not abandon So I shall not fear That can be hard, particularly when you don’t want to hurt other’s feelings. But by protecting other’s feelings, and denying your own, causes you to not be authentic with yourself. All kidding aside, its time to face reality, there should be no fear in that.

Cockachon Gone Wild
2007-11-06 19:41:54
Chai, my puppy is 6 months and 7 days old today, and she has been acting very strangely lately. She’s stealing my clothes and my SHOES, jumping at my house guests, wrestling with my kids cat, eating the books in my library, barking for attention at 2 am and then again at 5 am, the list goes on. Things feel quite chaotic at times. But then there are those moments when she is the sweetest little designer dog in town. Those cute puppy sad eyes, those wonderful kisses, snuggles, this list goes on as well. Does my puppy have some psychological disorder - is she bipolar, has she developed a split personality, and/or could she be schizophrenic? “NO“, says all the books in my library, that have not been eaten and torn to shreds. Apparently my lovely Cockachon is going through “puppy puberty”. According to Puppies for Dummies, Chai’s puppy world is being shaped by 2 conflicting forces: the desire to please me and the urge to test her leader, namely me

Audi vs Lexus
2007-11-13 19:26:19
Last Winter, 2006, I bought a black Audi Allroad. When I sat in the drivers seat, I can not explain the amazing feeling I had.  She was 6 months old when I was rear-ended by a speeding Honda Accord. When the tow truck and ambulance arrived on the scene, it was not until then that I noticed that my dear Audi was shaped like an upside down letter “V”. AGHHHH - not only was my body in complete pain, but my heart ached as I watched her being loaded onto the tow truck headed to a cold and lonely lot. The following day, I received the dreaded call. “Ma’m, sorry but your car has been considered a total loss.” “No way” , I shreaked, “I just bought her 6 months ago!” “Ma’m”, said the cool and collected insurance lad, “consider it this way, your car saved your life, sorry for the news, have a nice day”. “Have a nice day”? Was he #$%& kidding me? So, I had to gather my composure and begin the

Kanye West’s Mother, Donda West
2007-11-12 20:02:50
In Loving Memory (updated 11/13/07 @10:30 pm) Kanye West’s family issued a statement Monday after the death of the singer’s mother, Donda West, of possible surgical complications: “Kanye West , his family and friends would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support and kind words that have come in from across the country since the death of his mother, Dr. Donda West. “After working in higher education for 31 years, Dr. Donda West and Kanye West co-founded the Kanye West Foundation with the mission of helping to combat the severe dropout problem in high schools across the country. The first and signature initiative of the Kanye West Foundation is Loop Dreams. Designed to capitalize on students existing interest in hip-hop, Loop Dreams challenges students to learn more about what’s behind hip-hop culture in order to help them develop skills, express themselves creatively and be empowered. “In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be

How Long Will I Live?
2007-11-11 11:57:16
Well today I used a calculator to get some sort of an idea of how long I could expect to live. When I first thought of the idea of doing this, I was a bit cautious. I mean, who wants to know how long they could live, right? Another thought I had was, “I believe in God, and only He knows how long I am going to live”. But, I did the calculator anyhow, for “entertainment purposes only”, and I am ok with the answer (now if it said, I would be not live much longer, I wouldn’t be feeling good right now). The calculator based its calculations on my current age, gender, family history and my personal lifestyle. It then added and subtracted years based on my answers, then at the end, when I was given my “life expectancy age”, it also gave me a list of things I could do to add years to my life. For instance, better ways to manage my stress, dieting and exercise. So are you a bit curious of my “life expectancy age”? 91 years old fol

American Music Awards - top 3 Performances
2007-11-18 22:03:07
Jennifer Nettles & Beyonce: R&B mets Country and together they sing “Irreplaceable”. Hearing this Beyonce hit sang in country gave me a new appreciation for the song. Duran Duran: Hungry Like the Wolf — awesome performance, particularly for us who know the 80’s all to well. When they started to sing this, my poor neighbors got to hear my singing, and my boys saw their non-rhythmic mom dance. Where have they been - I’ve missed them, glad they’re still around. Rhianna & Ne-Yo: My 2 favorite Rhianna songs — “I Hate that I love You”, “Umbrella”. I am a bit partial to Rhianna considering her Caribbean roots. *** OMG - did you see Gene Simmons (from Kiss) - was that a toupee or what?

Butterfly Kisses: Chapter 2
2007-11-14 17:11:54
When Gabe and Lionel first met they had an instant connection. Lionel gave Gabe butterflies every time she saw him - the same happened to Lionel. It seemed like love at first sight, these two destined for all eternity. However, each had a past and a present that would find its way into the feelings that were growing for one another. “Lionel”, Gabe whispered into his ear, “it’s so good to see you”. “Gabe, mi vida, I’m so happy to see you”. “Wow”, though Gabe, “he still calls me ‘mi vida’”. They continued to embrace as the mall shoppers bustled by them. As they stepped back from one another, Lionel winked, “you look good, and the years have aged you very well”. “Thanks”, giggled Gabe. They had gotten caught up into each other eyes, when the mood was broken. “Lionel honey, there you are. I have been looking for you”, belted a woman who approached Lionel. She stro

Shopping Tomorrow?
2007-11-22 18:23:02
Count me out of the “Black Friday” shopping trend. For those who don’t know, the day after Thanksgiving is dubbed ‘Black Friday’ because it’s when retailers are said to finally move out of the red, representing losses, and into the black, symbolizing profits. For some, the shopping frenzy that ensues on the Friday [...]

Counting Calories

Word has it that the New York City Health Commissioner wants restaurants such as Burger King and McDonald’s to spell out exactly how fattening their food is, right where people order.
