Poll: Bush's Rating on Iraq at All-Time Low
2006-12-19 09:11:25
How low will he go? (photo credit — CBS News) It seems that polls on President Bush's job handling of Iraq are comparable to rushing touchdown records at the NFL — constantly being broken. WASHINGTON (CNN) — Support for President Bush's management of the Iraq war has dropped to an all-time low even as his overall approval remains tepid but steady, according to a CNN poll released Monday. The survey, conducted Friday through Sunday by Opinion Research Corp., found support for Bush's handling of the Iraq conflict has decreased to 28 percent from 34 percent in a poll taken October 13-15. In the same CNN poll, President Bush's overall approval rating dropped one point to 36 percent. His overall disapproval rating increased five points from 57 to 62 percent. Opposition to the war polled at 67 percent with 54 percent supporting an immediate withdrawal or out within one year. A recent CBS News poll put Bush's disapproval on Iraq at 75 percent with only

Also, she stated that she will make her decision for a potential 2008 presidential run sometime after the New Year. NEW YORK — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday she would not support a short-term increase in U.S. troop presence in Iraq unless it was part of a more comprehensive plan to stabilize the country. Clinton also offered the broadest indication yet that she was close to a decision on whether to enter the 2008 Democratic presidential field. Reid Inserted Pork in Final Hours of 109th Congress

Honest leadership, open government for the next Congress . (photo credit — Associated Press/USA Today) Incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) broke a campaign promise before the Democrats officially take over both chambers of Congress. "Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, who has pledged to stop 'dead-of-night legislating,' did a little of his own in the final hours of this year's congressional session. "Reid slipped two home state projects into the last major bill Congress passed last week: a transfer of federal land in Nevada to state and private control that's almost two-thirds the size of Rhode Island; and a $4 million grant for a hospice. Neither had been approved by any congressional committee. "Reid said the land measure will help Las Vegas and other cities in his state grow and the hospice money rights a flawed Medicare ruling. One senator and some government watchdog groups criticized the actions, pointing to promises by Re

The Mystery of Jamil Hussein Solved
2006-12-18 00:51:25
The Amazing Adventures of "Journalist" Michelle Malkin Michelle Malkin may not have to travel to Iraq — afterall. NEW YORK Has the mysterious and much-disputed Associated Press source in Iraq, a police captain named Jamil Hussein — finally been found? His existence has been challenged in the past three weeks from the U.S. military, some Iraqi officials and conservative bloggers in the U.S. A blogger named Marc Danziger who has followed the debate claimed late Saturday that he believes he has positively identified the captain at the Yarmouk police station, just as the AP had claimed, although (if this checks out) his first name may be spelled Jamail, not Jamil. Though far from definitive proof, it was strong enough to cause at least one conservative blogger to wonder if those who had mocked the AP might have to eat “a huge shinola sandwich.” Just Thursday, Eason Jordan, the former CNN news chief now launching a Web site called IraqSlogger, had earne

Counterinsurgency Manual "At Odds" with U.S. Tactics in Iraq
2006-12-17 08:36:48
(photo credit — World Bank) The 282-page field manual for counterinsurgency, "approved for public release" with "unlimited" distribution, is "at odds" with current U.S. tactics in Iraq , reports the Los Angeles Times. WASHINGTON — The U.S. military's new counterinsurgency doctrine takes issue with some key strategies that American commanders in Iraq continue to use, most notably the practice of concentrating combat forces in massive bases rather than dispersing them among the population. Among the examples is the use of special forces in Iraq. Most special operations forces in Iraq spend the bulk of their time and resources trying to kill or capture Al Qaeda members and insurgents. But the manual says the best use of those troops is not hunting enemies but training Iraqi security forces or police. Two years ago, word leaked that the U.S. was building a series of "enduring bases" throughout Iraq, "designed to last for years

(photo credit — 173rd Airborne, my uncle's former unit while serving in Vietnam) CNN reports that Governor Bill Richardson (D-New Mexico) "will denounce" Senator John McCain's (R-Arizona) troop "surge" plan of 30,000 more U.S. forces to be sent into Iraq. Both men are potential 2008 presidential candidates. WASHINGTON (CNN) — New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson will denounce Sen. John McCain's, R-Arizona, suggestion that more U.S. troops are needed in Iraq when he appears Saturday at a New Hampshire Democratic Party event, his campaign said. Richardson is actively exploring a run for the Democratic presidential nomination, while McCain is considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination. Richardson and McCain have said they will announce their plans early in the coming year. McCain has recently pushed for an escalation of U.S. forces in Iraq; an option the Pentagon and White House are leaning towards

Edwards Expected to Announce "08 Bid

Officials say an announcement from the former North Carolina senator is coming by the end of the year. (photo credit — Low Culture) Senator John Edwards (D-North Carolina) is expected to announce his candidacy for president between the Christmas and New Year's holidays from the New Orleans area hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina. WASHINGTON - Former Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards intends to enter the 2008 race for the White House, two Democratic officials said Saturday. Edwards, who represented North Carolina in the Senate for six years, plans to make the campaign announcement late this month from the New Orleans neighborhood hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina last year and slow to recover from the storm.

There's a lot of shame to clean off. Edwards: "Two" Becomes "One" Senator John Edwards (D-North Carolina), the '04 vice presidential candidate, is shifting from his famous "Two Americas" platform on economic inequity to a much broader array of reforms and policies in his "One America" campaign. And so while he hasn't officially announced he's back in the race for president, the Edwards who very much appears headed for another run will come to the campaign with a retooled agenda - unabashedly progressive - that includes what may be the largest package of social services reforms since Lyndon Johnson's "War on Poverty." "What you're seeing now is a process that started in 2004, when he put on his own clothes, basically, and said, 'I'm going to win or lose as John Edwards,'" said his wife, Elizabeth, who is recovering well from her recent bout with breast cancer. JCS Splits with White House, Oppose "Surge Option"
2006-12-19 18:36:47
So much for all that "listening to the generals" talk. The Washington Post reports that the Joint Chiefs of Staff are in "unanimous disagreement" with the White House on the "surge option;" a plan originally floated by Senator John McCain (R-Arizona). The Bush administration is split over the idea of a surge in troops to Iraq, with White House officials aggressively promoting the concept over the unanimous disagreement of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to U.S. officials familiar with the intense debate. Sending 15,000 to 30,000 more troops for a mission of possibly six to eight months is one of the central proposals on the table of the White House policy review to reverse the steady deterioration in Iraq. The option is being discussed as an element in a range of bigger packages, the officials said. But the Joint Chiefs think the White House, after a month of talks, still does not have a defined mission and is latching on to the surge idea in part bec

The Associated Press is reporting that Vice President Dick Cheney will be called as a witness for the defense in the case against former chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby. "We're calling the vice president," the news agency quotes attorney Ted Wells as saying in court. Wells represents Libby, who is charged with perjury and obstruction of justice. The charges stem from an investigation by Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald into how the name of CIA operative Valerie Plame came to be revealed in the press. The undercover operative's name appeared in a column by conservative columnist Robert Novak just one week after a New York Times column by her husband, ambassador Joseph Wilson, criticized the Bush Administration's handling of pre-war intelligence on Iraq. Denver's Bid for "08 DNC Convention Hits Snag
2006-12-19 20:33:04
New York City and Denver duke it out for the right to hose the '08 Convention . Denver's bid for the 2008 Democratic National Convention in jeopardy? Denver's bid to host the 2008 Democratic National Convention hit a serious snag Monday after a union leader refused to sign a no-strike pledge, with a decision due anytime. City and union officials confirmed Monday that Jim Taylor, head of the local stagehands union, is refusing to sign a mandatory agreement with national Democrats pledging not to strike if the convention comes to Denver. Debbie Willhite, executive director of the host committee, said not having full union support is "probably a deal breaker" for the DNC. This is a huge setback for Denver's chances. Last week, the New York Times reported that the DNC was close to making a decision "no later than Monday." Well, Monday has come and gone. It is quite plausible that the DNC was set on Denver but the refusal to commit to a no-strike pledge

Bush to Expand Size of Military

On this, the 1,325th day since the declaration, "mission accomplished" in Iraq. (photo credit — TIME Magazine) President Bush plans to expand the size of the military, the Washington Post reports. No specifics on numbers were discussed but the president acknowledged that the U.S. military is heavily strained. President Bush said today that he plans to expand the size of the U.S. military to meet the challenges of a long-term global war against terrorists, a response to warnings that sustained deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan have stretched the armed forces to near the breaking point. In an interview with The Washington Post, Bush said he has instructed newly sworn-in Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to report back to him with a plan to increase ground forces. The president gave no estimates about how many troops may be added but indicated that he agreed with suggestions in the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill that the current military is stretched too thin to cope with

Iraq V.P.: Bush "Brainwashed" Blair on Timetable
2006-12-20 10:19:17
"Yo! Blair ! Here boy!" (photo credit — BBC) BBC: Iraq 's vice-president claims Tony Blair was "brainwashed" by President Bush into not setting a timetable for troop withdrawal from Iraq. Tareq al-Hashemi suggested Mr Blair had supported his idea of announcing a timetable, but then changed his mind after talking to Mr Bush. The two leaders discussed the issue about three months ago, after which the PM was to raise the issue with Mr Bush. The US president has so far refused to set a timetable for troop withdrawals. Speaking in New York, Mr Hashemi said Mr Blair had been convinced by his proposal for a timetable for withdrawal. He told the Council on Foreign Relations: "It is quite unfortunate that your president made a sort of blackmail out of Mr Blair."

It is what others think you believe that really matters. Oh, and Obama is a traitorous Muslim that is unfit for office." And while Obama may not identify as a Muslim, that's not how the Arab and Muslim Streets see it. In Arab culture and under Islamic law, if your father is a Muslim, so are you. And once a Muslim, always a Muslim. You cannot go back. In Islamic eyes, Obama is certainly a Muslim. He may think he's a Christian, but they do not. The Billion Dollar Race?
2006-12-20 11:00:31
Benjis: Candidates will need lots of them to remain viable contenders. The Washington Times reports that the chairman of the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) warns that $1 billion may be spent by both parties in the hunt to succeed President George W. Bush for the presidency. The chairman of the Federal Election Commission yesterday predicted that 2008 will produce the first $1 billion presidential race and that the $500 million that each party's candidate will need to compete will severely limit the field of contenders. "The 2008 presidential election will be the longest and most expensive in United States history," FEC Chairman Michael E. Toner told The Washington Times. "The nominee of each major party is likely to opt out of the public-financing system for the first time ever for the general election," Mr. Toner said. […] Mr. Toner said that nominees will seek to raise up to $500 million for their campaigns and that the "entry level"

Al-Qaeda's Propagandist: Debbie Schlussel
2006-12-20 23:33:58
David Neiwert breaks down the recent bigoted attempt to attack Democratic Senator Barack Obama from Illinois. Neiwert pulls out a key quote from Debbie Schlussel that completely mischaracterizes the "war on terror" as a "fight against Islam." As he writes, Schlussel and her ilk are providing fodder for al-Qaeda to recruit young men to fight the West. Two problems: Schlussel, who in most regards is a second-tier right-wing pundit anyway, represents a formulation we've seen increasingly (including during Roy Moore's tantrum over Keith Ellison) saying not that we are at war with terrorists or Al Qaeda, but that we are at war with Islam itself. What these right-wingers fail to remember is they are playing directly into Osama bin Laden's hands. [original emphasis] America's right-wing: Winning the "war on terror" for Osama bin Laden since 2001. Updated 12/20/06, 2:38pm: In a related story, Rep. 1994. The senatorial campaign by Mitt Romney, the Republican Governor of Massachusetts, is quickly overshadowing his potential ‘08 bid for the presidency in these early days on the (pre)campaign trail. Heading into the fray as a Republican governor from one of the most liberal states in the Union, Romney has an uphill battle ahead of him. Six weeks after the “thumpin’” Republicans received at the polls in the midterm elections, Governor Romney’s past is coming back to haunt him. In 1994, he proclaimed to be to-the-left of Ted Kennedy on gay rights, including anti-discriminatory laws and the “don’t ask, don’t tell policy” of the military. (Flip-flopped.) As late as 2002, he voiced “strong support for a woman’s right to choose.” (Flip-flopped.) Abstinence, emergency contraception and stem cell research — not the same anymore. Heck, he even had illegal immigrants tending to his yard. (He says he believed they we

Yeager: Hunter is the Right Stuff
2006-12-22 21:56:24
[Cross-posted at The Right ’s Field] Chuck Yeager, the primary basis for Tom Wolfe's book The Right Stuff, has endorsed the candidacy of California Rep. Duncan Hunter . Hunter's campaign has not generated much buzz since he announced the launching of his exploratory committee in October. In fact, Rep. Hunter placed last in a recent KCCI poll conducted by Research 2000 from December 18 through December 20 in Iowa of 400 likely Republican caucus voters. The California lawmaker received zero points in the poll and placed behind two senators that lost re-election campaigns — Rick Santorum (PA), lost in a landslide, and George Allen (VA) — and one outgoing governor that recently said "No tengo futuro" (Jeb Bush, FL). Although Hunter, a staunch opponent of immigration, literally couldn't do worse, could have whatever support he may enjoy undercut by Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colorado) as the two duke it out for the Bill Cutting vote. However, a possible Tancredo candidacy, stran

Selective Service to "Test Draft Machinery"
2006-12-23 02:36:45
Associated Press reports, via Raw Story: The Selective Service —the federal agency that would be integral to any draft effort by the Bush administration—will perform tests on its system equipment, the Associated Press is reporting. Selective Service “is planning a comprehensive test of the military draft machinery, which hasn’t been run since 1998,” writes Kasie Hunt. “The agency is not gearing up for a draft,” an agency official told Hunt, and “the test itself would not likely occur until 2009.” The article explained what a test would encompass. The “readiness exercise” would test the system that randomly chooses draftees by birth date and its network of appeal boards that decide how to deal with conscientious objectors and others who want to delay reporting for duty, Campbell said. Selective Service System officials, however, felt the need to calm fears of a possible draft looming in the future. The message on the front page of

N.H. Unconvinced by Romney

[Cross-posted at The Right’s Field] Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney faced tough questions about his evolving views on several hot button issues during a "friendly holiday get-together" in New Hampshire. Apparently some partygoers left unconvinced of the potential 2008 hopeful's qualifications as a conservative. "After talking with him in person, though, it is hard to figure out what he does believe" [emphasis added] Leaving potential voters with the idea that "it is hard to figure out what he does believe" is not a good way to win votes in the primary. Looking to ease conservative fears on issues of abortion, stem cell research, same-sex marriage and gay adoption, Romney defended himself, saying: … he has always believed that marriage "is a relationship between a man and a woma

Graham Criticizes GOP Rep. on Anti-Muslim Letter

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) holds many political views oppposed to mine. His attempt to pull a fast one on the Supreme Court this summer with fellow GOP Senator Jon Kyl (R-Arizona) was infuriating. (In fact, falsifying a debate on the Senate floor under any normal Congress would have had repercussions.) This Sunday, the South Carolina Republican criticized Virginia Republican Congressman Virgil Goode for the bigoted letter he wrote that said he “feared” more Muslim s would be elected to Congress. Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison became the first Muslim elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November and said he intends to take the oath of office on the Koran, the holy book for Islam. In that letter, written to Rep.
