Jennys and Jackos Favourite Cakes and Restaurant in Negril Jamaica
2007-10-27 20:59:28
Original content from Jamaicamax.com Jennys and Jackos Favourite Cakes and Restaurant has been in the same spot on West End Road in Negril Jamaica for 30 years. Jennys and Jackos should really be called Dorothy and Jackos. Ms. Jenny passed on many years ago now but that spot was made famous as Jennys so when Jacko and his wife Dorothy took over they ripped down the old building and put in the new place while adding Jackos name to the sign and Mrs Dorothy now answers to the name Mrs Jenny far more often then her own name. Must be kinda weird for Tayon and Jennys other children who still live in the neighborhood to hear mommas name still used so long after she has passed on. I suppose thats a legacy of sorts. Jennys is famous for its “special cakes” but popular for being the best value restaurant in all of Negril. It’s a locals restaurant that feeds the neighborhood and tourists alike. You’ll most often find the place packed with Jamaicans enjoying such island f

Mosquitoes, bug bites and MRSA in Jamaica
2007-10-22 13:19:55
Original content from Jamaicamax.com I had people ask me about my bug bites in Jamaica and what they could do to prevent the nasty infections I got. I’ll say that this summer was the worse I have ever seen bugs and mosquitoes in Negril and they really did eat us up horribly. My youngest son Robby has some scarring on his legs much like some of the older street hustlers around here and its sad really. I’m hoping he’s young enough he grows out of them but i fear he’ll have some long term marking. We all got bitten by mosquitoes but he got it the worse I think. I’m beginning to believe I had a MRSA infection that made my bug bites worse because I began to notice that they took weeks to heal when it should have been much less. Kinda scary I may have had a deadly infection and thought it was fricking bug bites but the article below just about seals it for me. I treated my own wounds by lancing and draining, I thought they were spider bites but found no spider

Roaring Rivers Park and Mineral Springs Cave Bath
2007-10-11 12:11:20
Original content from Jamaicamax.com I’ll start by saying don’t listen to this guy, he’s a sucker and him and his type are made to pay these kind of people. They prey on him and his type because they can and they let them. Don’t let them and they won’t bother. His experience is very similar in fact to mine but I’ll explain how things can go differently. I too was approached by a man on a motorcycle as I pulled into the local gas station for a refuel. I had actually just driven past the station and was on my way to the Roaring Rivers Park when I realized I was about to run out of fuel and it was best to turn around rather then risk it. I went inside as the attendant pumped some gas and I purchased a cold drink. While taking a sip outside the guy on the motorbike asked me, wa’ gwan? I told him I was on my way to the river with my kids, generally a likkle more information than most will need or I ever give out but I was feeling talkative that

Medical facilities in and around Negril Jamaica
2007-09-29 17:53:31
Original content from Jamaicamax.com Many of us will go to great lengths to plan the perfect Jamaica vacation and in most cases it comes at least close. Many of us will not plan properly for medical emergencies. It may have something to do with us not wanting to face the facts that something may happen to you or someone you care for while on vacation. It may be something else all together, no matter what reason you have for not planning for medical care or emergencies it’s not a good one. There isn’t one. I brought along two emergency medical kits that I loaded with lots of extras. We have lots of bandages, sutures and supplies for minor cuts or bites. We have antihistamines, antacids, OTC pain relievers, cold and cough remedies and more. We brought a lot of stuff with us and I’m glad we did. I never expected we would use all of the stuff we brought but I knew it would cost a lot more here for the same things and I was right. Not only that but we’ve had a hard t

A day trip to YS Falls down South Coast Jamaica
2007-09-22 14:07:59
Original content from Jamaicamax.com We decided to take a day trip down the South Coast of Jamaica from here in Negril and visit the YS Falls Nature Attraction and the surrounding area. We have taken numerous tours down the South Coast of Jamaica from Negril since we bought the van and have seen a number of places we would like to stop in but YS Falls comes highly recommended as one of the nicer waterfalls in Jamaica and we thought it would be nice to see the difference between this and Mayfield Falls. We took a long drive and stopped a few places so it took almost 2 hours to get there when it should be more like 1 1/2 I would think. It did seem a bit farther than Mayfield but if waterfalls are your thing then it’s well worth the trip. YS Falls has a total of 7 much larger and more majestic looking waterfalls when compared to Mayfield. The height of some of the waterfalls must be over 30 feet or more and the water moves with much more force here than it did at Mayfield. The YS

Long term apartment rental in Negril Jamaica
2007-09-18 16:00:34
Original content from Jamaicamax.com It’s worth mentioning that we’re staying at the Heartbeat Resort here in Negril Jamaica for long term. We were able to negotiate a very fair monthly rate and we’ll most likely stay right here at least until December anyway and most likely well into next year also. I’m hopeful that we’ll find our own place sometime next year but for now it’s nice to have a stable place and Heartbeat seems like a great choice to us. It’s great having a place to call home and being able to actually unpack and live in a place is better for us as a family I’m certain. The kids are very comfortable here and they have a nice group of local children to play with. It’s been a lot of fun for the kids and parents as well as we have enjoyed having them over to share and play with. We’re located at the beginning of the cliffs basically and have the advantage of not only the cliffs to enjoy but easy sea access from the s

Buying and registering a motor vehicle in Jamaica
2007-09-15 03:04:41
Original content from Jamaicamax.com We decided we wanted a vehicle and began looking for one over a month ago now. A new car was out of the question and the used car market here is pretty poor but I found that you can get a car here for as low as $1000 US and I figured what better way for us to get around than our own vehicle. As we started looking it became more apparent that what we really wanted was a van so we could go on our own tours and so we decided to spend the money and find a van for sale in Jamaica. Well there are loads of vans and buses for sale using the Gleaner Classifieds but as you can see the average price is above $500,000 Jamaican dollars or about $8000 US which was quite a bit more than we had to spend. I found that you could find used cars for sale in Jamaica at lower prices but they go fast. There are used car dealerships in Jamaica in major cities such as Kingston, Montego Bay and even Mandeville but the market is more for newer cars in the 2003 and newer m

Getting a TRN (Taxpayers Registration Number) and bank account in Jamaica
2007-09-15 02:38:40
Original content from Jamaicamax.com In order to conduct any sort of business in Jamaica you must first register to get a TRN or Taxpayers Registration Number . I knew we would need a TRN for things like opening up a bank account, buying a car and opening a business so I decided to get one while in Kingston. I was in pursuit of a bank account in Jamaica so I can move some money here and avoid the ridiculous fees charged to withdraw some cash here in Negril. Opening up a bank account turned out to be a little more difficult then expected but I found a way around things for us and maybe someone else can appreciate the information but first back to the TRN. The TRN application is pretty simple and straight forward and forms can be downloaded from the Jamaica Tax Administration in advance so you’re prepared once you arrive. Any government office in Jamaica is going to be busy but the Tax Collectors Office must be the worst. I was actually very lucky on my first trip through and gettin

Royal Palm Reserve Eco Tours in Negril Jamaica
2007-10-30 14:18:25
Original content from Jamaicamax.com Royal Palm Reserve is one of those special places where one can appreciate the beauty and tranquility of nature and the wonders of Jamaica. The Reserve bills itself as one of Jamaica’s best eco attractions with over 300 acres of lush tropical jungle and Jamaican wildlife including over 300 species of animals such as birds, butterflies and reptiles and 114 documented species of plants and flowers. The Reserve was established in the mid 1980’s as part of a plan to protect the Great Morass Royal Palms which had undergone extensive harvesting and were nearly devastated by clearcutting. The land was originally managed by the Petrolem Corporation of Jamaica but after a long series of hassles they released it to the Negril Environmental Protection Trust (NEPT) in 2001. The NEPT manages the Reserve with a goal to protecting the area and natural resources of the area under the following objectives from their website: 1. To protect and

Rough Guide to Jamaica 4th Edition - Travel Guide Review by Jamaica MAX
2007-11-01 09:41:59
Original content from Jamaicamax.com I bought The Rough Guide to Jamaica 4 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) for our planned move to Jamaica because it was the most up to date book on Jamaica travel that they had and I had a bad experience on my first trip by carrying an outdated travel guide. On my first trip here many of the locations in the guide had closed or changed hands and things were not what they were supposed to have been. I was very disappointed and made the decision my next guide on Jamaica vacations was going to be the best one available. I think I made a great choice with The Rough Guide to Jamaica 4 by Rough Guide Travel Guides. It’s been an incredibly valuable tool in my adventures and I think it will do much to help you with yours. The Rough Guide to Jamaica 4 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) is perfect for just about any traveler to Jamaica, it’s a bit larger than some travel guides at 7.6 x 5 x 0.9 inches and slightly heavy for backpackers at 15 ounces shipping wei

Blue Horizon Restaurant on West End Road in Negril Jamaica
2007-11-03 15:40:14
Original content from Jamaicamax.com We stopped in for dinner at Blue Horizon Restaurant for some jerk chicken in Negril recently and it was a nice experience overall. The Authentic Jamaican food was good and the place was beautiful and all for us to enjoy. Not a single customer in there either time we went. Sometimes thats nice but other times its not. I was a bit surprised with our first bill and we spent a bit more than I thought we should but thats how things go in Jamaica sometimes. I should have asked how much my dinner was costing me if I was worried about it. I think I paid like $600 Jamaican for a nicely dressed jerk chicken quarter and some rice. The place is nice but not that nice really and for a better value I could have gone to Jennys just a short walk down West End Road. Blue Horizon is probably much nicer for a romantic dinner for two on the Cliffs in Negril or a small gathering of friends at the bar for some Red Stripes and a cool sunset. I don’t think we&rs

Aquasol Water Theme Park in Montego Bay Jamaica
2007-11-09 16:12:30
Original content from Jamaicamax.com Aquasol Waterpark is an all day adventure for just about anyone with an interest in the Caribbean Sea and beaches of Montego Bay. This place is pure watersports and you can enjoy just about all the watersports fun Jamaica has to offer right here on this one beach. Aquasol is located at Walter Fletcher Beach on Gloucester Avenue right in the heart of Montego Bay and is considered one of it’s best beaches and one of the cities top attractions. Summertime is just right for Aquasol and you can catch up on your sunbathing and do some nice snorkeling in the rich abundant near shore waters of the island. The water is always great and the beach is well maintained. Your entrance fee is well spent on a nice facility with so much to do we won’t cover it all in this article. Aquasol is packed with watersport activities such as the really fun water trampolines, overpriced jet skis, banana boat rides, waverunners, kayaks, pedal boats, glassbottom b

Youth Hostel and Affordable Rooms for Rent in Kingston Jamaica
2007-11-06 09:50:30
Original content from Jamaicamax.com This article should have been written at least two months back when I stayed at Leighton House but I neglected to write it and it just dawned on me what a great deal the place was and I should really mention it to our readers who might be traveling to Kingston like me in the next few days. I have to go back to Kingston to clear up some paperwork for my business registration, apparently I neglected to sign a document on the Overseas Company Registration and now I have to drive back to sign it. It’s a 4 hour drive from Negril to Kingston and I have made it there in 3.5 hours with early morning traffic to my advantage but driving there and back in one day is out of the question for me at this point. It’s simply better for me to stay a night and have two days to handle my business. It takes twice as long to do anything in Jamaica anyway right? So I’ll be calling in on my friends Shane at Leighton House in Kingston. The home is situa

Stolen : One SeaLife Sl320 and One JVC Digital CamCorder
2007-11-24 11:57:23
Original content from Jamaicamax.com So it finally happened to us. We had something stolen from us after all I have done to make certain it was a safe trip. I had a couple to many Green Stripes one evening and went to bed with the cameras on the front porch of Heartbeat almost a month ago now. It was a long day really and we had spent the day at the beach and all over town taking photos and video to add to our collection. I had taken some great sunset photos and was going to load them to the site the next day. I lost some nice pictures and video plus any chance of documenting the last month here and our move to a new apartment. It’s been a real bummer and the primary reason I have not written much. The camera and photo taking kinda inspired my blogging and having them both stolen really hurt me. I’ve been a few places and done a few things since but not having a camera to record experiences has been upsetting to say the least. Lessons learned on double checking my safety be

Wellness Vacations at Sunset Heal Mountain Retreat and Healing Center in Jamaica
2007-11-28 00:46:14
Original content from Jamaicamax.com I’ve already spoken about how much I really like Roaring Rivers and the surrounding area of Petersfield and Shrewsbury in Westmoreland Parish Jamaica. I think Roaring River is one of those special places where you can witness the real beauty of nature. Watching the mineral springs flow from underground and cascade over the rocks and the lush green vegetation that grows around it is a perfect scene for me and I just love to sit and admire the place. On my second adventure to Roaring River cave I noticed these large sun shaped signs near the signs pointing to the River. The signs were shaped like a setting sun and I was intrigued by what they read. It said Sunset Heal Mountain Retreat and Healing Center . It just so happens that a friend was going through a cancer experience and I was interested to see what they offered at this place. I followed a dirt road up towards the mountain side and past a small farm and some wooden huts where it comes

Long term apartment rental in Negril Jamaica at Devine Destiny
2007-11-26 12:54:15
Original content from Jamaicamax.com Trip Advisor So we moved into Devine Destiny last month. It is Devine Destiny and not Divine Destiny in Negril unlike so many web searchers seem to think. (The website is pretty sad looking still because I’m too busy to update it yet) It’s been a couple of weeks without my camera and I was hoping to get them back before I published this article about our new apartment in Negril on the West End. I had hoped to be able to provide some nice new photos of our moving in and the lovely grounds around us but it looks like it will be until after our return in the new year when I will have a camera to take those pictures with. I’m just not going to buy one here when I’ll be home so soon. It’s actually been just about three weeks now and we’re totally in love with Devine Destiny. I can already see we will be keeping this place for a long term rental. I expect we’ll be here at least a year and I may still keep this fo
