Sick of the "Joneses"? Take the test to see if you ARE a "Joneses" family and don't know it…
2007-12-20 09:00:53
Only 3 days 3 hours 58 minutes left until Hanks Holiday Handout drawing! Photo by: jurvetsonSo I’ve written and re-written this post about 15 different times, but figure the best way is to just start at the start - What am I talking about? What is ANYONE talking about when they say “keeping up with the Joneses”. Well the all-knowing Wikipedia says: “Keeping up with the Joneses” is a popular catchphrase in many parts of the English-speaking world. It refers to the desire to be seen as being as good as one’s neighbours or contemporaries using the comparative benchmarks of social caste or the accumulation of material goods. To fail to “keep up with the Joneses” is perceived as demonstrating socio-economic or cultural inferiority. According to The Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins by Robert Hendrickson, the origin of this phrase is rooted in the popular comic strip of the same name created by cartoonist Arthur R. “Pop”

Am I off my rocker or are food prices going up faster than anything else?
2007-12-19 09:00:41
Only 4 days 4 hours 11 minutes left until Hanks Holiday Handout drawing! Photo by: WhatRhymeswithNicole I was brought up cutting coupons out of every paper we had. I was even encouraged to get coupons from my friends family newspapers (to some discomfort and embarrassment) if they weren’t going to use them. I have always been one for saving a few bucks when I can. My wife actually hounds me about always being so frugal; but lately I’ve been able to state my case a little more.I don’t remember the last time I got out of ANY grocery store for under $100.00. Between my wife, 2 kids, dog and cat, the grocery bills are ridiculous, just see my balance sheet. We spend almost $625.00 per month at the grocery store, and are always out of food it seems. I remember back a few years when I was single and shopping for myself and $100.00 would last me at LEAST a few weeks if not a month! I like corn, and I know it is out of season, but I went in today to Safeway and corn w

Monthly net worth update March 2008 (+2.42%)
2008-03-11 03:01:46
Things are still on the upswing this month, up 2.42% from last month. My 401k recovered from a pretty big dump the month prior; but my wife’s is still shooting ahead MUCH faster with another 10% increase this month! REREX and TRRDX are proving to be big backers for her and her 1,2 [...]

130 Million People Will Get Tax Rebates…Will You? You won’t, if…
2008-03-09 03:01:05
Everyone’s talking about the rebates. It’s heady stuff, I know. I thought it might be good to mention a little fact that seems to be getting swept under the rug. . . not everyone will get one. Are you on that list? Well, here’s what you need to know to find [...]

Hanks Weekly Hangouts #20 (March 8, 2008)
2008-03-08 02:01:53
This week had a lot of ups and downs. CNN posted a pretty sweet article on timing what Uncle Sam gets but Brett Favre hung up his cleats also. The weather was sunny in the Pacific northwest for the first time since the rain started back in May, so that’s a good thing…

My favorite books out there about money and personal finance
2008-03-07 02:01:58
I’ve never been a big fan of reading, but I AM a big fan of personal finance ; so it is strange that I have found a happy medium over the past few years. I haven’t read as much as I’d like to in the past few years, but I have enjoyed a handful of [...]

A slick StumbleUpon option you may not know about, but will continue to use going forward!
2008-03-06 02:01:19
I’m always a big fan of helping people improve functionalities, and I’ve been a huge StumbleUpon user for a few months now. I find a lot of new sites with this tool that I would never have found otherwise. I have a pretty long list of things I enjoy; but often times when [...]

Will Brett Favre’s retirement make the stock market take a dive?
2008-03-05 02:01:46
Brett Favre announced his retirement yesterday leaving several die hard Favre fans unable to deal. Emotionally, these people should be very worried, but that isn’t the half of it! Financially, the US economy should be the ones that are taken aback by this news! Below here is a VERY scientific graph I dug [...]

This is how rich people think differently than poor people
2008-03-04 02:01:25
I came across Mark Shead’s 10 Signs You Will Be Poor post today and realized how true it is. Often times it is the small things that can derail your financial future. Much of the population doesn’t realize or plan properly anymore. With mortgage companies lending money how they have the past few years, and [...]

So you’ve got an invention idea that will change the world and make you big money?
2008-03-02 02:01:48
Who HASN’T thought of something that they thought could change the world? I admit I have thought of AT LEAST 10 things I thought would change the world, I’ve documented some, and even made some progress on some of them.I’ve contacted “inventors help lines”, I’ve called companies, I’ve started excel spreadsheets detailing costs, I’ve [...]

Hanks Weekly Hangouts #19 (March 1, 2008)
2008-03-01 02:01:33
I churned out the new version of M.I.B. this week and I’ve got to admit, I’m pretty impressed with what Jon was able to cook up. He’s got the design down pat! Love his work and if anyone is looking for someone to help with their design, let me know because I’m happy [...]

Will a tankless water heater really save me money?
2008-02-29 02:06:54
I saw an ad after the Super Bowl (which is about 2.1 million less to run I’d guess than the DURING game ad) about these tankless water heaters. I thought it sounded like a good idea because by the time the wife and kids hit the shower in the morning, there’s nothing left for [...]

Should I try day trading?
2008-03-13 03:01:33
This one has popped in and out of my head for a few years now. I have a friend who has been doing it for a while now and making pretty good money off it. But I still haven’t jumped on the bandwagon. He’s done forex and penny stock investing but prefers the forex. [...]

How do I publicize my blog? A personal finance blog’s lifeline from “start-up” to “staple”
2008-03-12 03:01:51
I was contacted by a fellow Personal Financer this morning named Naveed from NaveedsMind who asked a question that got me going for 9 hours writing this one! Ever get on a kick like that? Grab a cup of coffee and sit down for this one, it’s a long, interesting, and informative story you will [...]

How can I lower the interest rate on my card and raise my credit limit?
2008-03-14 03:01:27
I have a friend that works for a large credit agency and we’ve had a handful of conversations about it. He said that it is fairly simple to do. Most people don’t even realize they have the option to request these things…

How much does your accountant charge to do your taxes? Is it worth it? Would you recommend them?
2008-03-18 03:02:02
This is always a hot topic, especially around this time of year. To accountant or not to accountant, that is the usual question. For some it isn’t a question, accountants cost money they don’t have, but for a LOT of people, they can get their taxes done for a lot less than they [...]

The 29 most frugal things I have ever done - do yours compare to my past levels of cheap?
2008-03-17 03:01:35
I got to thinking this weekend when I saw half a tablet of the dishwasher detergent (the kind that comes in the “concentrated pacs”) left in the bucket and thought I’d toss it in and get the extra $0.04 out of the jumbo bucket of 60 I got at Costco. I had plenty more to [...]

What do you have in your wallet - cash, credit, or none of the above?
2008-03-19 03:01:07
What do you have in your wallet ? I’ve always been a big fan of spending only what I had in my wallet and nothing more. Don’t buy on margin, never use layaway, (does anyone still do this?) and under NO circumstances use credit ! It probably has a lot to do with how I grew [...]

Strange how that works out, Hangout #22 falls on the 22nd.  Must be a sign!  Go buy a lottery ticket, quick!   Another good week at MIB, readership via RSS increased 13% I believe due to a few new advertising structures I’m bouncing around including Entrecard and StumbleUpon Ads.  I’ll be discussing those a bit more [...]

The age old question: How many credit cards should I have?
2008-03-21 03:01:50
Oh how many times have I seen or been asked this one, and I always give the same answer, it depends. I hate giving you the same old song and dance you’ve always heard, so I’ll add on some other VERY beneficial questions you should know the answer to when asking this question… 1. [...]

Should the government save folks facing foreclosures?
2008-03-24 03:01:24
In January alone, more than 45,000 American families lost their homes to foreclosure. That number sounds high, right? January 2007 saw about 20,000 less foreclosures. The marketing was sliding then, but wasn’t nearly hitting 45,000 families across the country. Is it in the governments duty to help these folks out? So foreclosures are [...]

A personal financers review of SubvertAndProfit.com
2008-03-28 03:01:00
I’m all for passive income and when I initially saw this website I thought it was a good idea, and I signed up. They promise decent money ($0.50 to $1.00 per SU review ) for a fairly easy task. It makes sense (cents) for them and pumps up the site that is purchasing those [...]

I really love the “future post” ability of Wordpress , I just need to watch the “fat-fingering” of the keyboard I guess!  I don’t generally like posting things mid-day, but I thought this was worthy enough to mention how to do it, but not take up a lot of time.  Charting out your week of posts [...]
