F1 quotes: de la Rosa tells Alonso ‘don’t worry, be happy’ 2007-10-27 09:03:06 Time for a new site feature. We keep coming across quotes we love - hopefully someone is, as we speak, casting a medal for former Minardi F1 supremo Paul Stoddart after he remarked that the old joke about FIA standing for Ferrari International Assistance has come horribly true recently.
Ron Dennis has also been the source of some timeless classics recently, so much so that we did briefly consider giving him his own quote of the week slot - until the season turned really nasty, and suddenly every word was being vetted by the Woking legal team and the corporate press office.
So, in the event, it falls to McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa to kick off Brits on Pole’s Quotes to Watch Out For feature.
He should be a happy man right now - he’s just been re-signed after successfully negotiating some hefty bumps in his professional road caused by the Emailgate scandal. Bumps that might well have left lesser mortals facing instant dismissal.
And based on what he told the radio ne Read more:tells

F1: McLaren appeal date set, Stewart not optimistic about their chances 2007-10-27 08:37:19 McLaren’s appeal against a decision not to punish the three drivers who finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton at Interlagos and were later found to have fuel temperature irregularities is due to be heard on November 15.
However FIA president Max Mosley has already effectively stated that the appeal will fail.
He said: “For us, the world championship is over, the result is what it is. A team presented an appeal; at the moment, this doesn’t change anything - it’s up to them to prove they are right.”
“You could argue whether McLaren had a right to appeal. They could have protested the result, but they didn’t. Apparently they didn’t measure the temperature of the fuel.
“But even if the cars classified ahead of Hamilton would be excluded, would this change his position? The court of appeal will have to rule on that.”
Meanwhile, motor racing veteran Jackie Stewart
has said he understands why the team is contesting the decision, but fea Read more:optimistic

F1: Davidson’s team posts £4.5m loss 2007-10-27 08:16:25 Super Aguri, home of the British driver Anthony Davidson
, has just revealed its financial figures for its first year in business - and they amount to a £4.5 million loss.
The team, which runs on a fraction of the budget and resources employed by its biggest rivals, has been in the spotlight already this year for financial troubles after a major sponsor defaulted on payments.
In the plus column, the team has reportedly been talking to new sponsors and enjoys the financial support of engine supplier Honda.
In the minus column, F1 can a notoriously money-hungry and financially unrewarding business. And some of the new interest may have revolved around one-off deals for the Japanese Grand Prix.
Certainly the way the team and its drivers have managed to punch above their weight this season means they’ll have plenty of fans hoping they can stay in business.

F1: Will McLaren and Renault trade drivers? 2007-10-27 06:30:52 Here’s an intriguing rumour that’s doing the rounds at quite a high level - is Heikki Kovalainen about to get a drive in a McLaren?
The story goes like this. The team’s locked into a contract with Fernando Alonso, with whom its relationship have deteriorated to the point of unworkability. Alonso’s got a drive waiting for him at Renault
- but how to get him there in the face of that contract?
Answer: offer a driver swap that gets Kovalainen, in only his second season as a Formula One driver, acting as Lewis Hamilton’s rear gunner.
All well and good, you may say. This is just the kind of musical-chairs parlour game that we all enjoy playing when it comes to that point in the season when next year’s drives are up for grabs.
The only surprise is that it’s taken so long this year.
However, Kovalainen himself has been asked the question. And here’s what he told ITV Sport’s Louise Goodman, after confirming that he’s still waiting to
F1: Ecclestone says ’silly strategy’ cost Hamilton the title 2007-10-27 05:35:57 Bernie Ecclestone, never one to mince his words, has made his pronouncement about Lewis Hamilton
’s botched race at Interlagos - he thinks it was McLaren’s “silly” pitstop strategy that did the damage.
(However anyone who saw that garbled interview he gave Martin Brundle on the grid immediately prior to the Brazillian Grand Prix may be a bit bemused by the clarity of his opinions now.)
Bernie has aimed both barrels straight at Ron Dennis and fired, telling the Daily Telegraph: “If he hadn’t called Hamilton in for that silly low-fuel and soft-tyres stint he could have won the championship.
“He made no time on the road and lost 25 seconds making the stop. If he had only lost 15 seconds he would have been fourth.
“I feel sorry for Lewis after his performances this year as a rookie.”
Dennis had previously defended his team’s actions with cold Vulcan logic, saying: “People are very quick to talk about strategy.

To take part, you need to download a template from the team website and, essentially, colour it in. It’s recommended that you use Minardi’s traditional colours of dark blue, yellow and white.
Whatever medium you want to use is acceptable, whether it’s graphics software, pencils, watercolours - or anything else you like. Even crayons are acceptable!
All designs should be sent to the following e-mail address: minardiblog@racegarage.it

GP2: are Carroll and Minardi a match made in heaven? 2007-10-26 14:46:31 Adam Carroll
’s been making a bit of a splash recently after a cracking test at Jerez for Minardi Piquet Sports.
The Northern Irish driver came top of the timesheet after the the final session of the two-day post-season test at the Spanish track.
He finished 0.109 seconds ahead of Xandi Negrao, who is more usually to be found driving the Minardi car. Negrao was testing for ART Grand Prix.
Third place went to Javier Villa, who narrowly beat his team-mate for the day, Ernesto Viso, making a strong return to the GP2 series in Spain.
As well as testing for Minardi, Carroll put in some laps for iSport International. Both teams have expressed an interest in signing him for next year, with iSport team principal Paul Jackson saying “Adam ticks all the boxes.”
Minardi Piquet Sports team boss Felipe Vargas added: “I believe we will be able to put together a good sponsorship package for 2008 and, in this case, Adam would be amongst the top of our wish list.”

GP2: existing teams will return next year 2007-10-26 13:31:49 It’s as you were, chaps, for the next three GP2 seasons, according to an announcement made last week by the series organisers.
What’s known as the ’second generation’ of the championship, set to run from 2008 to 2010, is going to consist of the same lineup we’ve all got used to over the last couple of seasons. But, just for the record, they are:
Arden International
ART Grand Prix
BCN Competicion
Campos Grand Prix
Dams
DPR
Durango
Fisichella Motorsport International
iSport International
Minardi Piquet Sports
Racing Engineering
Super Nova Racing
Trident Racing
The status quo is being maintained despite organisers receiving more than 30 applications by teams
interested in one of the 13 grid slots.
Bruno Michel, series organiser, said: “The final 20 proposals were subjected to a number of checks regarding the teams’ sporting history, their financial stability, proposed sponsorship foundation and ability to market both themselves and the series.

GP2: stars take part in UK charity kart race 2007-10-26 13:07:06 To everyone out there who’s looking towards the off-season with dismay - and thinking it’s an awful long time until next year’s British grand prix, or even the A1GP race at Brands Hatch.
How do you fancy catching a bit of hot open-wheel action in Hertfordshire this November? Possibly even with the prospect seeing the current GP2 champion Timo Glock in action?
And you’ll be supporting a good cause while you do it. The Race Against Cancer is a karting fundraising event for Cancer Research UK that will feature GP2 drivers Javier Villa of Racing Engineering and Alexandre Premat of ART Grand Prix.
The organisers are also hopeful that iSport International’s Timo Glock, who confirmed his 2007 season crown at Valencia last month, will be able to attend, pending, as they say most intriguingly on the GP2 official site, “potential F1 commitments”.

A1GP: Team GB is, er, third again 2007-10-26 12:13:59 So, what’s been happening in the thrilling world of A1GP while we all had our eyes on Lewis Hamilton? Time for a bit of a catch-up.
Well, the first meeting of the season took place in Zandvoort, in the Netherlands, on September 29-30.
South Africa started the weekend as they meant to go on, with a double pole in a wet qualifying session. The team went on to dominate the sprint race with Adrian Zaugg taking the win. France were second and the Netherlands third
with a seventh-place finish from Oliver Jarvis the best the Brits could muster.
The feature race, however, was a different story with Jarvis putting a season-first win under his belt. Zaugg ran him to second with Switzerland’s Neel Jani coming home third.
This was a double-edged sword for new team principal Katie Clements because, as she related in her Guardian column, she was thus forced to make a significant personal sacrifice as a result of a bet with Jarvis.
She said: “Taking over from John Surtees as team p
F1: Hamilton’s autobiography is published 2007-10-30 11:23:30
Lewis Hamilton
might only be 22 years old - but he’s already packed in enough incident to fill a volume of autobiography
.
His new book, entitled ‘My Story’, is due to be published
on November 5, with what looks to us like a tastefully McLaren-themed red and black cover photo.
If you can’t wait that long to read his thoughts on fans, family and life as F1’s most successful rookie ever, then you’re in luck, because it’s currently being serialised in The Sun newspaper.
In the book Lewis discusses his relationship with his 15-year-old brother Nicolas, who has cerebral palsy, and confides how much he admires the youngster’s positive attitude to life: “Nic gets out of life what he puts into life and that must give him a huge amount of satisfaction.
“‘Never let him have it easy,’ my dad always said, just so he’d try harder. When I play computer games with Nic I always try my best to beat him. I never let him win. I n

’s F1 team.
The former Macau Grand Prix winner, who is managed by Martin Brundle and Mark Blundell at 2MB Sports Management, will test at Barcelona next month alongside Luca Filippi and Andreas Zuber.
Honda’s sporting director, Ron Meadows, said the aim of the session would be to assess the drivers’ skills, with a possible view to a future testing role.
He said: “Honda is committed to developing promising young talent in motor sport and we will take this opportunity to have a closer look at three young drivers who have done very well in the GP2 series this year.
“We will also be evaluating their potential to assist Honda in the future with our testing requirements.”

F1: Hamilton announces move to Switzerland 2007-10-29 16:19:59 It looks like the Boy Wonder may have forseen his first tax bill…
When we saw the headline, we thought: not another one. ‘Monegasques on Pole’ would be a really unwieldy name change for this site.
But, in fact, Lewis Hamilton
has decided to follow in the footsteps of Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso rather than David Coulthard and Jenson Button (no snide remarks about on-track performance, please) - and move to Switzerland
.
He claims it is to escape the excessive public and media attention he has had in Britain over the last year.
But we think that’s a bit disingenuous. And that it might have more to do with escaping the excessive Inland Revenue attention his accountant’s anticipating during the next one.
He is reported as saying: “Over there people don’t come up to you, they leave you alone and give you space.”
What is he talking about? The people of Stevenage, his well-regarded home town in sunny Hertfordshire, have given him sp
F1: Schumi to McLaren? or Sutil? It’s all got rather silly 2007-11-04 17:49:00 Brits on Pole would just like confirm that neither of its editorial team will be signing with McLaren to partner Lewis Hamilton next season. And if you’re not either, then that makes three of us.
The rest of the world, we’re not so sure about.
Speculation about who’s on their way to Woking, fuelled by a total lack of hard facts, is starting to get a bit silly. Hamilton himself, speaking at a season-ending celebration for Mercedes, suggested Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil or Heikki Kovalainen.
We were amused by Sutil’s manager’s optimism earlier this week when he said he hadn’t heard from McLaren: perhaps we spoke too soon. But it would be a tremendous leap of faith for Ron Dennis to try it - far greater than when Jaguar plucked Justin Wilson from Minardi on the basis of some good starts, which is the closest parallel we can think of.

F1: Red Bull gives you - nothing much to go on, actually 2007-11-03 09:12:31 The lack of hard information about Fernando Alonso’s 2008 plans has triggered a tidal wave of speculation - with most of it flooding Red Bull
’s way.
The Austrian team has ambition, money, cause for optimism next season and - reportedly - no problem with giving Alonso the one-year contract he is said to want. But it also has one of the grid’s better driver pairings already under contract for next season.
The team is staying tight-lipped about its plans - the only comment to have leaked into the British press so far could be read either way: “It’s pretty much unprecedented to have a double world champion on the market in November,” a team source told The Guardian, “but we currently have Mark Webber and David Coulthard under contract for 2008.”
It’s anyone’s guess whether that rules out a move for Alonso, or whether the key word is “currently”.
Little more can be gleaned from owner Dietrich Mateschitz’s commen
A1GP: Jarvis, not Kerr, for Malaysia 2007-11-03 08:47:11 Robbie Kerr will not get the chance to score a third consecutive Malaysia
podium as Oliver Jarvis
has been picked to drive there for Team GBR on November 25th.
Team boss Katie Clements said the decision had been made to give Jarvis, who won the season-opening feature race in the Netherlands, the opportunity to prove what he could do at Sepang.
Team GBR is currently third behind New Zealand and South Africa but, with only six points separating the three nations, hopes are high of a leap up the standings.
Jarvis said he was delighted with the decision: “Sepang is an amazing track and I really enjoyed running in the rookie session there last year.
“I cannot wait to race the A1GP car again and my aim will definitely be to score some strong podium finishes and even another win or two. Hopefully we can leave ahead of New Zealand and South Africa in the championship standings.”
The team did not release a statement from Kerr, who finished third in the 2005/06 season sprint ra
Franchitti’s tin-top troubles 2007-11-03 08:27:03 Dario Franchitti is finding the stripped-down driving of NASCAR a rude awakening compared with life in the telemetry-rich IndyCar series where he was champion last season.
“It’s a challenge,” he said. “That’s what I wanted, and I’ve definitely got that.”
The Scot has signed with Chip Ganassi and Felix Sabates to race full-time in the tin-top series next year and has been familiarising himself with NASCAR ever since - including both types of car, the existing Busch Series vehicle and the controversial and unco-operative “Car of Tomorrow” (COT).
Franchitti, who has been replaced at IndyCar’s Andretti Green Racing team by Hideki Mutoh, has been finding it all a bit of a challenge since his first race in a stock car on 5th October.
This week he got his first taste of the COT at Atlanta Motor Speedway, before switching back to a Busch Series car for a test at Kentucky Speedway and a race in Texas on Saturday.

F1: Webber ‘more likely than Coulthard to leave Red Bull’ 2007-11-02 13:59:32 David Coulthard is not the person most likely
to leave Red Bull to make way for an incoming Fernando Alonso, according to one analysis of the newly-volatile drivers’ market.
Instead, it is suggested, Mark Webber
is finally on his way to Renault at the instigation of his manager - Flavio Briatore.
Briatore is known to have attempted to secure the Australian’s services for Renault in previous years. But, at the time, the manufacturers’ entire future in motorsport was under scrutiny and Red Bull must have seemed like a better bet.
It is possible that Webber might be more than ready to find another seat after an unsuccessful year dogged by reliability problems.
Simon Strang, writing on the ITV F1 website, says: “It is unlikely that DC will move to another team at this stage in his career and his deal with Red Bull is believed to be airtight.
“Webber, though, still has something to prove at the sharp end and is managed, like Alonso, by Flavio Briatore. The Aus Read more:lsquo
F1 quotes: Mosley manages a positive moment 2007-11-02 13:38:49 There was one nice moment in FIA president Max Mosley’s recent splenetic outburst against Lewis Hamilton, McLaren and anyone else with the audacity to believe Ferrari shouldn’t just be handed the drivers’ and constructors’ trophies on the podium in Albert Park next spring.
Since we extensively reported his negative comments about the Boy Wonder, it appears to us only fair that we should get the balance right by including his sole positive one. Here it is:
He’s also got a lot of interest worldwide because he’s come manifestly not from a rich background. He’s just made it.
We couldn’t agree more and, in a world that’s populated by the offspring of Rosberg, Hill, Villeneuve and Piquet, it really is a breath of fresh air.
In fact, it reminds us mostly of David Coulthard, whose dad ran a haulage firm back in Scotland - and which, as he once said in an interview, was very nearly his career as well.
Coulthard did a great piece about this f

F1: Clarkson asks Hamilton: ‘why Switzerland?’ 2007-11-02 13:18:14 Lewis Hamilton
was a surprise guest at this year’s National TV Awards, where he appeared to hand over a special award to Top Gear presenter and newspaper columnist Jeremy Clarkson

The F1 star was reportedly smuggled into the Royal Albert Hall in London, venue for the ceremony, through an underground car park to keep his presence a secret until the moment he appeared on stage.
Clarkson, when he had overcome his amazement at being confronted with both the award and with Hamilton, collected himself enough to ask: “Are you really going to Switzerland

Hamilton, who confirmed that he’d always been a big fan of Top Gear, was forced to admit that, yes, the reports were true.

F1: what Alonso’s McLaren departure could mean for the Brits 2007-11-02 12:29:30 And they’re off! Usually the musical chairs start a lot earlier in the season. But Ferrari’s decision to re-sign Massa coupled with Alonso

What does all this mean for the famous and the lesser-known British drivers competing for seats in Formula One? Ladies and gentlemen, please place your bets…

Comment: can Alonso possibly go to Renault now? 2007-11-09 15:30:14 Renault are worried. Very worried.
The team has released a statement containing an elaborate justification of its actions after one of its engineers was found to be in possession of confidential information belonging to another team.
The lengths it has gone to include reporting the incident to McLaren, the team in question, as well as the sport’s governing body, the FIA.
It also states that independent experts from McLaren have been invited to examine its computers and car designs.
Every line of this statement reveals how Renault is desperate to avoid the fate its competitor faced back in September - a crippling financial hit that none but the top tier of teams would be able to swallow.
McLaren is first and foremost a racing team. Formula One is it’s raison d’etre, and its extremely successful partnership with manufacturer Mercedes Benz a mere offshoot of that. It is impossible to imagine the company surviving in any other business.

F1: Renault ‘invited McLaren to inspect car and computers’ 2007-11-09 14:54:55 The Renault
F1 team has admitted that it possessed confidential information belonging to McLaren, and that the data made it onto its computer systems - but has denied that it was misused in any way.
It says that McLaren has been invited to send independent experts to inspect its car designs and computers
so its competitor can be reassured that confidential technical drawings removed by a former employer have not been exploited.
In a statement released today the team stressed that every effort had been made to remove all traces of the information from its systems.
It also explained how engineer Phil Mackereth, the former McLaren engineer at the centre of the row, was suspended from the team on September 6.
The team has been summoned to explain its actions at a meeting of the World Motorsport Council to be held on December 6.

A1GP: Team GB put on notice by Dutch 2007-11-09 06:23:52 Oliver Jarvis has been put on notice
for the Malaysian A1GP weekend - don’t expect to be in third place by the time the races are over, because the Dutch

Team GB are currently joint third in the standings with A1 Team Netherlands. However Dutch driver Jeroen Bleekemolen believes that won’t last long, as his outfit is in better shape than ever.
He told the series’ official site that he expects his team's improved form to continue in Malaysia which is due to host races at Sepang on the weekend of November 24/5.
So Jarvis, who has been chosen to drive in this race after successes by Kerr in Malaysia over the last two visits, may have his work cut out to keep ahead.
Whereas the Brits are continuing a long run of form with their third-place slot, behind perennial winners New Zealand and South Africa, Team Netherlands has seen a much better start to its 2007/08 season.
However Team GB principal Katie Clements believes Jarvis, the less experienced of
F1 season review: 10 things we’d like to see next year 2007-11-08 18:31:27 An awful lot has been said and written about the 2007 Formula One season, and not much of it has been very positive. While it’s been a fantastic few months in many respects, there’s also been far too much that we’d rather forget about.
So, rather than dwelling on feuding team-mates, the trashing of reputations among drivers and team principals alike, the alleged behind-the-scenes fisticuffs, the legalities of flexible floors or cooled fuel, and exactly what it was that Nigel Stepney said to Mike Coughlan, let’s accentuate the positives.
Here’s some things
that we think would be good for the sport in 2008. And, sure enough, it will need them after the year it’s just had:

F1 season review: who won what, where and when 2007-11-08 15:08:56 No question - the 2007 Formula One season is one that will live in the memory for a mighty long time. Reputations made and broken, the closest of finishes and the biggest of scandals - re-live it all in our end-of-year round-up.

McLaren struggled for pace all weekend, meaning they could never seriously challenge Raikkonen - and Alonso and Hamilton ended up duelling for position in the pit stops. Alonso got it, coming second, but Lewis Hamilton had fans and pundits alike sitting up and taking notice after pulling off a magnificent third. F1: Prodrive’s debut looks increasingly unlikely 2007-11-08 12:51:32 The possibility of F1 having a full grid of 12 teams next year is looking increasingly unlikely as the odds of Prodrive
making it to Melbourne in March recede into the distance.
And former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan, never one to mince his words at the best of times, thinks that if David Richards’ Oxfordshire-based crew don’t make it to the starting line then rival bids should be reconsidered.
Jordan, himself an unsuccessful applicant for the vacant grid slot, wrote in F1 Racing magazine: “What is disappointing is that several teams, some of proven F1 calibre, applied for this extra slot and the FIA, after careful deliberation, chose Prodrive.
“Once, when Toyota told the FIA they were unable to compete in the agreed year, there was a hefty fine. Will Prodrive be fined if they don’t enter in ‘08?

F1: rumours about DC’s future abound 2007-11-08 11:53:27 Ugly rumours
that we very much don't want to countenance here at Brits on Pole are starting to surface regarding David Coulthard's future with Red Bull Racing.
A week ago we reported how suspicions that double world champion Fernando Alonso is in talks with the team could spell bad news for the veteran Scot.
F1 gossip emerging today has Alonso partnering Webber at Red Bull while DC is relegated to Toro Rosso and Sebastien Bourdais sent back to Champ Car for another year. But how well does all this hold water?
It had been suggested that, as part of Alonso's exit deal from McLaren, Ron Dennis specified he must sign for a privateer rather than a manufacturer's team, effectively ruling out hot favourites Renault.
But this has since been denied by none other than Norbert Haug, Mercedes Benz’ president in charge of motorsport.
Red Bull Team owner Dietrich Mateschitz who, we have observed, often plays Mr Nasty to Christian Horner's Mr Nice, has reportedly told the Austrian ne
