eco sac: innovative rainwater harvesting 2007-10-26 13:52:47
From Australia:
The eco sac® is a revolutionary, new flexible rainwater bladder storage system that hides away under decks or floors making it much more discrete than traditional water tanks. The bladders are made from a beige coloured PVC material which enables potable water storage to Australian Standards. This means that the water captured can be used to safely fill swimming pools and fish ponds without fear of contamination from the bladder. The bladders sit in a strong galvanised steel frame supported by industrial strength geo tech fabric which gives added protection.
By placing the eco sac® under a house or deck, the eco sac® can harvest all of the rain that falls on the roof by diverting the downpipes to a common in-flow pipe which goes into the side of the eco sac®. This means that more rainwater can be collected much faster than in a traditional rainwater tank. Multiple bladders can be installed either side-by-side or end-to-end for maximum water storage. södrasmart laminated wood studs 2007-10-26 13:43:57
SödraSmart is designed for non-loadbearing partitions and can be used as a floor, ceiling or wall stud. Wood combines form and function with ergonomic design, and saves time and effort. A natural material, wood has many positive environmental properties as well as being good to work with. The studs have generous openings that make it easy to install electricity, broadband, telephony, sound or home cinema. The unique design of the stud with its rounded edges makes it convenient to handle and install.
SödraSmart studs are made from the side boards of spruce logs which combined with the laminated construction makes them straight, stable and tension-free.

x-house, a very modern log cabin 2007-10-26 12:51:18
New from Sweden: the X-house. Developed by a father and son-in-law team - the father owns a glue-lam factory - that came up with this very cool idea to build houses made entirely from glue-lams (see this for examples of glue-lam). They hired an architect to design a few models (there are four basic ones - ) and the houses are being developed and sold for the DIY summer house/ski house market in Sweden. The kit system looks to be simple to build, and they are designed to rest on pier foundations. Pretty much all the materials for the buildings come from the same glue-lam factory, including the floor boards and roof decking. The interiors and exteriors are simply painted - no other finish is needed, though I gather from the other photos on the site you can add just about anything you want. There are larger and different designs being built near Stockholm as well.
Models: Clara 18m², Gårdshuset 40m², Selma 60m², and Hilma 72m². Shown is the Selma model. So cool.

wall stairs, aaron tang 2007-10-24 16:54:09
Using simple mechanical hinges and pistons, this inventive staircase easily folds flush up against a wall to expand a lower space and/or to restrict access to an upper floor. The mechanics within the design allow any person to easily open or close the staircase from upstairs or downstairs. Inner pistons help slide the stairs back up swiftly to create a flush wall. The pistons also act as a gradient to lower each step individually after the stairs have been pulled out, creating a gradual, elegant wave-like pattern as the steps individually lock into place.

kerouac on desolation peak 2007-10-24 16:25:49
Jack Kerouac spent 63 days during the summer of 1956 as a fire lookout on Desolation Peak, in North Cascades National Park. He wrote about his experiences in the books “The Dharma Bums” and “Desolation Angels”. The lookout is a 14′ x 14′ structure built in 1933 and remains active under the National Park Service.
I love these little buildings. Just lower the flaps, lock ‘em up and walk away….

zerohouse 2007-10-31 16:18:03
I don’t normally post unbuilt projects, but I like this one…. Scott Specht’s compact zeroHouse is designed to be highly efficient and totally self-sufficient: it will be fully automated, generating its own electricity, collecting it’s own water and processing its own waste. Looks good, too. I’d like to see this built.

Takasugi-an, Chino, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Completed in Spring, 2004. Terunobu Fujimori, a professor of architecture at the University of Tokyo, built his boyhood dream hideaway, a teahouse on stilts, in the bottom of his father’s garden. So said his father when he saw it: “There goes Terunobu, making something wacky again.” I love it!
At the end of this post I have included some links to the man’s amazing works - I’d say they’re worth studying….. this is not your traditional Japanese architecture! Very inspiring.

timbercrete 2007-10-30 19:39:34
Timbercrete contains more than 50% by volume of recycled sawmill waste. Homes made of this product consume less energy for heating/cooling. Timbercrete acts as a “carbon sink” preventing the release of carbon dioxide from decomposing sawdust into the atmosphere. Timbercrete achieved FRL 240-240-240 in CSIRO Fire Test, therefore provides as high a level of protection against fire related threats. It can be used in a wide range of domestic, commercial, industrial and public buildings.

cool built-in stairs, splyce design/build, inc. 2007-11-05 13:52:50
Nice built-in stairs created by Splyce Design/Build for their project, W. 2nd Street Renovation, Vancouver, BC.
A previously unused space under an existing stair to the roof deck, was replaced with a multi-purpose millwork element. Framed with standard lumber, and covered with maple veneered panels, this piece provides roof deck access, as well as audio/video equipment storage and a built-in gas fireplace. To accentuate it’s free standing, furniture-like nature, the millwork stops short of the ceiling. The stair continues up by way of three floating laminated glass treads, allowing light from the windows above to penetrate the living room below.

shipping container architecture: the ark at art oasis 2007-11-05 11:44:48 The artist Ron Crepeau (the Arktist) is building a 3500sf “ark” on his property, Art Oasis, in the remote Southern California desert, using eight 40′ shipping containers, and he is doing all of the work himself. It is his home and studio, and is built around a 700sf inner courtyard. Granted, the architectural style, Pueblo Adobe, isn’t to my own personal taste, but I deeply admire his spirit and determination. Just goes to show, you can do it, and when there’s a will, there’s a way. Below are just two of Crepeau’s videos and the floorplan, from his website/blog. Amazing.

friday material & product roundup 2007-11-02 17:24:47
North Tiles from Kvadrat, designed by the brothers Bouroullec, are a new way of creating and dividing space. North Tiles are a system of foam and fabric building blocks which can be put together and used as walls, decoration or for dividing rooms. North Tiles also have an acoustic function, as the fabric has a sound-absorbing effect.
