small, cool prefabs: a floating home/office and a retreat, aero 11 design 2007-11-21 12:23:25
A couple of years ago I ran across the Airship Series of prefabs from Aero 11 Design on MocoLoco, and while the “Home” design
is cool, my head was turned by the other two designs offered by the firm: the “Office” and the “Retreat”. I seem to recall seeing the floating home/office
on the last page of Dwell magazine a few years back….? Whatever. These are awesome.

the aalto house, aino and alvar aalto 2007-11-29 10:25:32
The Aalto House, Helsinki, Finland. Built: 1935-36. This was the home of Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto and his wife, Aino Marsio-Aalto. Mrs. Aalto played a significant role in the design of this house, and contributed to many other projects as well.
We wanted to make the best use in a private house of natural lighting, the orientation of the terraces and the different rooms, shelters from the wind and so on, so because of our climate, we were obliged to adopt a complex solution with a lot of external walls. This required more thorough investigation of the insulating properties of the external walls… Different wall finishings have been used in the interiors, such as fabric, non-woven fibrous rugs and wood. The floors are wood strip or linoleum, laid directly on the concrete. Cantilevered floor slabs are insulated inside and out. The external insulation is clad with corrugated sheets.

earthbag building: the sun house in haiti 2007-11-28 13:04:45
I am an avid reader of Kelly Hart’s blog, Green Home Building and Sustainable Architecture, and recently he started a separate site called Earthbag Building which I am hugely interested in (as some of you may have noticed already ). I just ran across a recent project, The Sun House ( Kay Sole in Creole), built in Haiti, which appeals to me for several reasons: 1. The walls are fabricated from poly bags which carried bulk diet staples such as wheat, rice and barley, and rather than being disposed of, filled with earth become free building materials. 2. Haiti is desperate for safe and sound housing, and given that Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, why not utilize a free commodity? 3. Not the least of which, the house has a Modern look! Aside from the trullo style, most Earthbag projects look a little too hippie-ish for me The fact remains, this is one of the best methods of building I’ve ever seen, especially for poor and developing countries.

ModRocks Recycled Glass Pebbles: 100% Recycled Clear Glass Pebble Tile
Consumer bottles are crushed into small pieces, tumbled and then mesh mounted onto 12″ by 12″ interlocking sheets. These are 100% recycled glass, and since there is no melting involved, very little energy is used in the production process. The clear color plays well with whatever light source is available, and they pick up grout and surrounding colors beautifully. The example shown is grouted with pure white grout. Ideal for wet and dry areas both indoor and outdoor including floors, pools and spas.
ModRocks Natural Pebble Mosaics
Terrific natural look indoors and out for floors, walls, showers, backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, walkways, pools and spas. Sold by mesh mounted square foot sheets which interlock to easily fit together for a smooth installation.

two interiors by specht harpman 2007-11-27 11:30:00
I like these two interiors by Specht Harpman - they are an exercise in restraint in the use of materials. Elegantly simple. The first five shots are of the Amon Bregman Residence, the last four are of the Eiche Residence. I love the last shot of the bathroom with the grey penny tiles. Lovely.
Scott Specht is the designer of the zeroHouse, by the way…

dairy house, charlotte skene catling 2007-12-05 14:59:25
Dairy House, Somerset, England. Winner of an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects for regional architecture in 2007: This architectural delight involved the creative conversion of an old rural dairy into a five bedroom house. Using local labour and materials, the house is clad in estate oak, stack-dried in the farmyard: a technique that suggests the design, raw planks separated by spacers allowing air circulation. The structural expression between old and new creates a 2-storey steel and glass threshold up to the roof valley gutter. It is only as the visitor climbs the stair into the extension that the sectional manipulation of the house on the side of a hill is apparent; the first floor landing expands through a glass wall to an indented court holding a rock enclosed spa-pool.
This project is also on the shortlist for the Bombay Sapphire Prize, for its innovative use of glass.

floating boathouse and sleeping cottage, mos office 2007-12-05 14:18:24
Floating Boathouse and Sleeping Cottage, on an island in Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada. Back in June I wrote a post on this floating boathouse, and I was lamenting that I had no idea who designed and built it, nor even where it was. Troll around the Interweb long enough, it’s amazing what you’ll find…. Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample of MOS designed this floating boathouse and the sleeping cottage
as part of a ‘master plan’ - not shown is the existing (?) main house. I’ve been up in that area before - it’s gorgeous!
First up is the boathouse, then the sleeping cottage, then the photos from the original post. All links are included at the end of this post, including the link to the Flickr slideshow detailing the build of the boathouse. Lots of photos…. Enjoy.

shaker house condominium 2007-12-18 09:57:58
Shaker House Condominium is a six unit project located at 464 Hancock Street in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. Inspired by the Shaker Village in Hancock, Massachusetts, each unit incorporates elements of Shaker design. The painstakingly renovated homes are a perfect blend of function and form, featuring top quality cabinets, hand crafted inset storage closets in every bedroom, wide plank pine flooring, period authentic bathroom fixtures, and historically accurate windows. All of the units have either a separate storage space or adjoining recreation room on the basement level and access to two shared courtyards.
One thing is for sure: you do a project like this, your woodworking skills better be up to snuff. Lots more good stuff at the site: Shaker House Condominium. Look, they even have Antonio Citterio’s Shaker Woodstoves installed in the units!
kitchen one by rotor 2007-12-17 18:47:52
I love stuff like this: Kitchen One is a project by Lionel Devlieger in collaboration with Eric Van den Broucke. The paneling of the cupboards for this kitchen is made out of laser-cut plywood, an industrial leftover from a company that specialized in die-cutting cardboard for the packaging of luxury-goods. The wooden boards were used as punching-plates for punching out the shape of unfolded boxes from large sheets of cardboard. They had to extract the razor-sharp knives from the slits before being able to saw the boards. See more photos at the site: Rotor

reconstruction of atelier brancusi, renzo piano 2007-12-14 11:02:40
All my life I have been drawn to the work of the sculptor Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957). His original studio near Montparnasse, Paris was torn down soon after his death, but Renzo Piano recreated it in this building, situated in Centre Pompidou, to showcase the sculptor’s works in as close to their original light as when they were created, complete with the all-important north-facing window walls/sky lights…
