Alex over at Shedworking always finds the loveliest stuff…. This green-roofed garden structure built by Altham Oak and Carpentry, Ltd. Wooden House of ÄŒervená Rokle (Red Gulch), Lety u DobÅ™Ãchovic, Czech Republic. Built: 2004. By now, it should come as no surprise that I’m absolutely mad about little houses built of wood, and I’ve fallen hard for this ‘cabin’ design by Tomáš Klanc’s firm.

ecomod, university of virginia school of architecture 2007-11-14 12:35:25
ecoMOD is a research and design / build / evaluate project at the University of Virginia School of Architecture that aims to create a series of ecological, modular and affordable house prototypes. Working in partnership with the UVA School of Engineering and Applied Science, our goal is to demonstrate the environmental and economic potential of prefabrication, and to challenge the modular and manufactured housing industry in the U.S. to explore this potential. In the context of this multi-year project, an interdisciplinary group of architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, historic preservation, business, environmental science, planning and economics students are participating in the design, construction and evaluation phases of the project. Three prototypes are being developed for Piedmont Housing Alliance, and one for Habitat for Humanity.

the future of mud, a film by susan vogel 2007-11-14 12:20:56
Remember my post, Mud Mosques of Mali ? If you’re as interested in this most ancient (and very relevant) form of architecture as I am, you’ll want to see this film…
This is the story of Komusa, master mason and heir to the secrets of Djenné architecture. He hopes his son will continue the family profession and maintain their world heritage city - but Djenne is connected to a global world now, and competing ideas about the future have arrived. Documentary footage and staged scenes tell an intimate story of family tensions, contemporary building practices, and the precarious future of the renowned mud architecture of Mali.

home slicker: ‘how exterior walls stay dry on the inside’ 2007-11-13 10:27:16
Home Slicker is the answer for protecting wall systems from the damaging effects of moisture. Wind-driven rain from the outside, moisture vapor from the home’s interior, and corrosive surfactants that leak from certain types of siding, usually remain trapped in between the siding and building paper or housewrap. This unvented moisture can negatively impact the performance of siding systems and building paper or housewrap. It can also lead to the development of mold and mildew in the wall space, potentially creating health concerns. Unvented moisture behind cladding systems can also cause premature failure of paints or stains. Home Slicker effectively drains moisture from behind the siding, reducing the chances of premature peeling or blistering of finishes. Home Slicker’s unique three-dimensional matrix provides a continuous space for drying, channels for drainage, a thermal break, and pressure equalization, allowing moisture to escape quickly before it damages the sidewal Read more:inside

hycrete 2007-11-19 16:25:29
When used in concrete, Hycrete Admixture provides two levels of membrane-free protection.
Hycrete Admixture protects the reinforcing steel by chemically bonding to the steel surface and creating a monomolecular film. One end of the Hycrete molecule is polar by nature and attaches to other polar particles, such as iron or other metallic molecules. Because Hycrete is chemically bound to the steel surface, the admixture offers greater endurance and enhances structural life.
Hycrete provides integral waterproofing and disperses throughout the concrete matrix. Once the concrete is poured, the waterproofing is complete. Hycrete reacts with metallic ions present in the water, aggregate, cement, and the steel reinforcement. From this reaction, a precipitate is formed that fills the capillaries of the concrete, thus repelling water and shutting down capillary absorption.

A while ago, I posted a container cabin in Northern Minnesota (Holyoke Cabin) built by Hive Modular architect Paul Stankey and his wife Sarah Nordby, and now Stankey’s partner Bryan Meyer has posted the cabin he and his wife Anne Ryan built some years ago, called Clara Cabin…. Built on Ryan’s family property, the 220sf off-grid cabin is described as “a glorified tent - a primitive room in the woods”. I’m in love.

BITUBLOCK: Building blocks made from rubbish… a high-performance product that is about six times stronger than traditional concrete block. It’s made by mixing waste products like recycled glass, metal slag, sewage sludge and incinerator ash with a sticky binder called bitumen, also used in road paving. The mixture is compacted in a mold and heat-cured, which oxidizes and hardens the bitumen.

lapdawg 2007-11-23 09:32:27
Last week, my back went out (again), and while it wasn’t too bad, I had to lay in bed on an icepack for a couple of days. There was no way I could sit in a chair at the desk or use my laptop comfortably in bed…. My problems were solved when I got the Lapdawg X4, a multi-purpose transformable table made of anodized aluminum. It isn’t just a laptop tray or bed table for laptops - it’s three legged, push button, auto-locking joints swivel 360° into five different table tray modes, so you can also use it as a laptop stand, bed/breakfast tray, TV-dinner tray, a lap/writing desk or whatever else you can dream up. The Lapdawg can hold up to just over 25 lbs., weighs just over 5 lbs. and comes with its own carrying case. I really liked it because the joints are adjustable in tiny increments and I was able to get just the right angle for my laptop and there was room for the mouse on the side (very important!). It worked perfectly. See the site for lots more photos an

The denim brand G-STAR RAW’s interior design team took a vintage steel canal ferry boat belonging to VIP Watertaxi Amsterdam and refitted it into the wicked cool looking thing you see here. When I was back in New York visiting my father recently, we were heading out of the Sayville River to our place on Fire Island and my father pointed out a recently-retired 1930’s ferry boat that was for sale, mentioning that it would easily convert into a fabulous houseboat. I’d like to do that, and make it look like this boat! I’d be the talk of the Great South Bay….
