Making a Difference with Words.
2007-12-05 10:43:32
Do you ever just feel like the terminology of the Bush Administration was lifted from George Orwell's 1984?  There is a great little video called the "Hypnotic Art of Clear Confusion" that illustrates just how words can be used to confuse and in our confusion, we are more susceptible to suggestion. - http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com/insights/index.htmlTake this headline for example:  "Evidence Of Innocence Rejected at Guantanamo"- http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/12/05/5632/Since when has it been okay to need evidence of innocence instead of evidence of guilt?  Doesn't that just feel like something out of the Mad Hatter tea party in Alice in Wonderland?  I'm surprised it isn't called Evidence of Unguilt. In another article about a Guantanamo Detainee's case being heard by the Supreme Court, there is a quote that really bothers me. "'Show me one case' down through the centuries where circumstances similar to those at Guantanamo Bay entitled an alien t

Make your Move Smooth
2007-12-05 09:29:08
One of the biggest problems we had moving to Canada earlier this year was getting things set up ahead of time.  We got help loading the Uhaul, but when we got to Canada, we couldn't get the local movers to call us back because our cellphones were long distance.  We ended up staying in a hotel in the ratty part of town until we got a local cellphone because landlords wouldn't call us back either!  My mother-in-law is about to move from Arizona to California.  Hopefully it will be easier for her than us trying to move to a different country!  I found a great website for moving in the US that could prevent a lot of planning headache for her.  She can get quotes for different kind of movers by just filling out one form.  She can look up realtors, research homes for sale and houses for rent ahead of time.    After our experience, I definitely recommend planning a head a much as possible.  The move itself is stressful enough!

Shop Local
2007-12-01 06:25:53
At the joeindie.com blog, a man is furious because a mom & pop shop charged him $20 over what is the going retail price at other stores.  He's so mad that they wouldn't adjust the price difference that he's disputing the charge to his American Express card.  Here's what I had to say about it:I’ve come to know a local mom & pop clothing store recently and I didn’t really understand what WHOLESALE meant until the owner explained it to me. I found out that on some items she has to buy them at the retail cost because she can't buy enough quantity to qualify for any wholesale discounts. However, she still stocks these things because they are in demand. She has to mark them up a little so that she can cover her costs of shipping, staff, etc. You can't possibly expect the same price from Walmart who can buy those games 1 million at a time and the corresponding wholesale discount as a mom & pop game store that probably only buys 3-4 at a time. If price is your

Trip to the vet tomorrow
2007-12-17 10:27:28
Deedee doesn't like to get snowed on, so you can see her sitting under a chair in the back of the yard.  She hopes a mouse will venture out of the nearby compost pile.  Deedee, my orange little wild thing, who was once called "Hell on Wheels" by the vet, is six now.  She decided to attack a bunch of wasps coming out of a ground nest in the backyard this past August.  Ever since that traumatic experience, she's been a much more mellow cat, positively snuggly at times even! Tomorrow she gets her vaccinations.  Won't she be thrilled?Kiki lounges around most of the time now and he's going to the vet tomorrow for pain management.  He's got FIV, bad allergies, arthritis, cancer & a heart murmur.   Its been over a year since his tumor surgery & I never dreamed he'd still be going, but he is!  He takes Metacam for pain twice/week & we're almost out.Smokey likes to help me work.  He was to the vet recently for a sinus infecti

The Christmas Party Report
2007-12-12 07:58:35
This is an adorable couple that we met at my husband's work Christmas party.  She works with my husband at Yotta Yotta and her boyfriend works at Bioware.  She had a local designer, Jessica Halabi, make her dress.  Unfortunately, the picture made some weird pink effect out of the beautiful teal paisley-like pattern, but you get the idea.  I think about the funniest thing about meeting them is that the lady loudly announced that we were "Carebears" when introducing us to her boyfriend.  Carebears?  They play WoW on a PvP server and we don't.  I didn't feel half as glamorous in my dress, but here's what I wore. Do you have any Holiday parties coming up?  If so, what are you going to wear?  Come to Fashion Mash and show us!

Warcraft Winter Fashion
2007-12-20 07:20:35
Hubby bought me a new outfit for Winterveil.  Obviously, it was designed for a gnome.  They just don't design clothes for us, um, troll women. Why didn't someone tell me you could see my bum when I bend over?  And then, on my way to the blimp, I got in an argument with a boar.   That just put me in a bad mood, so I had to change before the party. Don't you hate it when you show up at a party & someone has the same dress on? Of course, she had to wreck her outfit wearing a silly pink shirt.  But then, you expect that kind of thing from those fluffy blood elves.

How I'm Decluttering my Home.
2007-12-19 07:21:18
I admit it.  I'm a pile maker. Piles in the closet, piles in shelves, piles in cupboards, piles in the corner. I'm always digging through a pile somewhere looking for stuff.  I was sitting down a couple days ago and thinking about getting better organized.  A couple times, I've gotten the right idea & I have a few little plastic drawer carts for things like the kid's craft supplies.  That works great.  So I was thinking, how can I apply that to the rest of my "stuff?"  I sat down & started making categories for the things I saw in the piles.  I realized that the bulk of the piles were all my stuff.   I never thought of it this way before, but it turns out to be categories for my interests.  Child Development, Counseling, Zen Spiritual, Home Economics, Computer Games, Reading/Education, Physical activities, Clothes & body care.   My husband's stuff consists of weights, hockey gear, books, computer gadgets &

Dress like a peacock
2007-12-18 07:34:33
I just uploaded a bunch of old highschool pictures to embarrass people I know on facebook.  Thought I'd share with you this wonderful picture of me in 1989.   Yes, I really did dress like a peacock, but not on purpose.  I thought my burgundy sweater, polka dot burgundy tights & that teal coat were just the bomb together!  This was at a bird sanctuary that peacock perched above me thought I was his kin. Who knew I'd grow up & run http://fashionmash.com LOL!Kitty update:  Deedee saw the cat carriers out & went & hid under the stairs this morning.  I had to poke at her with hubby's hockey stick to coax her out & then I break her trust & take her to the vet!  She was very good for her vaccination pokes.  But she needs a dental- she's never had one.  Her gums are irritated, but the Vet said it doesn't look like there are any bad teeth.  She also told me the black spots around her eyes & nose are age spots.&nb

Shortly after our water stopped running yesterday, I read about the Lakota people declaring independence.  Some statistics from their website keep ringing through my mind: Lakota men have a life expectancy of less than 44 years1/3 of the homes lack basic clean water and sewage while 40% lack electricty.Median income is approximately $2,600 to $3,500 per yearIt is hard being without water.  Yesterday, we hauled in several pitchers of water from the trailer down the block.  We melted several buckets of snow so that we could flush the toilet.  I grimaced at how much water it takes to even rinse out the cat water bowl!  We can't do dishes and I'll tell you, sponge baths just don't cut it.Today the stores were open, so we had the luxury of buying some bottled water and a big 2 gallon container for water.  We got some paper plates, frozen dinners and hand sanitizers.  Things that you couldn't afford on an income of $2,600-$3,500 per year.  And we

Water Outage Christmas Present
2007-12-25 07:19:03
I filled the coffee pot with water this morning & then the water stopped running.  A water main broke out behind us in the alley, so we are going to be out of water for a few days.  The city workers came & shut off the water & then left.  Apparently they don't fixwater mains on Christmas !They've parked a trailer full of water down at the end of the block since everything is closed for the holiday and we can't get bottled water.  I used to have a big round cooler that I made koolaid in on hot days, but of course I can't find it when I need it!  I'm trying to figure out what to bring water back to the house in.  I do have a pile of water pitchers ready to go fill.  This ought to be an adventure.Fortunately, we had our Christmas dinner at hubby's grandma's on Sunday so we don't need to be worried about being freshly showered today or having water for meal prep or anything.  We'll get a hotel to shower in if it isn't fixed in a

How the Economy is going to Play out
2008-03-09 14:31:54
Please read How This Economy Is Going To Play Out by Ian Welsh.  I agree mostly with his predictions about the US economy.  Those of you that have been readers of my blog for the past 5 years will recognize a fair bit.  Boy do I like his term "zombie 'burbs."I do disagree on a couple of points.  I think the "asian economy decoupling" stuff is a little US-centric.  Yes, they will have a downturn while they refocus their manufacture of cheap disposable goods into more useful durable goods.  However, China & the other asian countries have been busy making business deals & investments the last few years outside of the US economy.  They know this is coming.I don't think the use of oil is going to drop as dramatically as he expects, therefore I don't be

Counting women in Economics
2008-03-09 11:23:41
We went to this interesting movie at a local cyber cafe last night.  They showed  "Who's Counting ? Marilyn Waring on Sex, Lies and Global Economics " which was directed by Terre Nash in 1995.  Film Synopsis: A modest sheep-farmer by trade, Marilyn waring was New Zealand's first female Member of Parliament in the 70s. With irony and intelligence Marilyn Waring demystifies the language of economics by defining it as a value system in which all goods and activities are related only to their monetary value and monetary exchange with the result that unpaid work, usually done by women, is unrecognized and activities that may be environmentally and socially hazardous are regarded as productive. She maps out an alternative economic vision based on the idea of time as the one thing w
