A True Sports Fan
2007-10-21 23:12:00
This article was written by none other than our good ol' friend Chet. It was also published in The Hindu. I will be posting some of his old stuff until he becomes active here. Read on...“A true sports fan would be someone who would consider any sports person to be an underachiever”. Because lets face it any man or woman no matter how gifted he or she is, is bound to be human. And no one is greater or bigger than the game he or she plays. But what happens if we aren't true sports fans. What happens when we as fans too are human? “Is that really Mike Tyson”, the question asked by my dad wasn't really a question but was an expression of surprise. Mike Tyson was being clobbered like a rookie by Evander Hollyfield on TV. I didn't say anything but watched the fight go on. It didn't make a big deal as to who won to me. But I did remember my dad telling me, when I was a kid, that Tyson's specialty was the uppercut knockout punch. Seemed like he had run out of those punch

The N95 8GB
2007-10-19 00:08:00
Yes, the Symbian goodness at its best is coming soon! I have always liked the N95 and its a great phone, but there were also many crucial deficiencies in the N95. Nokia now makes amends and releases this mother of all phones, the N95 8GB.The letdowns known on the original N95 were its very very limited RAM available after bootup (only 20 MB, sheesh!) and its battery. Nokia has now released its much more sexier black counterpart with these things solved. The new N95 has 8 GB of built-in memory (although the original one purportedly now supports up to 6 GB) but no memory card slot, which might be a turn off for some people as this leaves no room for more expansion. It now has about 84 MB of RAM free to the user, which means actual multitasking. The battery has been upgraded to 1200 mAh, more juice while using GPS, Yay!All in all, another great phone! Keep up the good work, Nokia! It's currently priced at 560 euros (Rs. 31376/-) before taxes. You can compare the old one to this new

No Gphone, but here comes Android!
2007-11-05 22:43:00
After all the rumors and speculations that have been flying around for the last year, things are clear now, there is no Gphone. Enter Android , an open-source operating system for mobile phones. Android is Google's newest baby born in collaboration with Open Handset Alliance, an association of more than 30 biggie companies like Motorala, Qualcomm, HTC, and T-Mobile. Notable absentees from the list are Nokia, Microsoft, and AT&T.According to Google's blog, the first phones boasting Android will hit the shelves most likely in the second half of 2008. According to Forbes, "Dream," pictured below is supposedly one of the five prototypes from HTC sporting Android and has a full swivel-out keyboard, touchscreen, and measures 3 x 5 inches. HTC is planning a commercial release of Dream in the second half of 2008.Sources: Google Blog, Engadget Mobile, Forbes

The digital clock made in 1933 that weighed over 15,000 Lbs
2007-11-04 13:43:00
Monster Clock Has No Hands (Dec, 1933)Moving numerals, three feet high, will tell Londoners the time when a monster clock now under construction in one of this British city’s railroad stations is completed. The big timepiece is believed the largest without hands ever built. Three endless belts of steel slats, driven by an electric motor, carry the numbers past a rectangular window high on the station wall where they are made visible. Each numeral is outlined by silvered disks of reflecting material, and floodlights play upon the figures to make them show up clearly at a distance. The movement of the belts is governed automatically from a control panel with an extremely accurate master clock, which in turn is constantly regulated from the observatory at Greenwich. The steel roller on which the hour numerals are shown is thirty-seven feet long and the blinds weigh about 15,000 pounds. This clock was put up at Paddington Station, London in or around 1935, I suppose, though it seems to h

MIT stackable City Cars reinvent the wheel
2007-11-03 13:07:00
Did you know there's a division at MIT called the Smart Cities group? It's true, and judging by the designs the team puts out maybe we should just leave city planning to them from here on out. They have a two-seater electric buggy in the works called the City Car that can stack against other City Cars to cut down on space and make transporting easy. Six to eight cars are said to be able to fit in one conventional parking space. The cars are built around an omni-directional robot wheel , which not only allows for impressive maneuverability, but also contains the vehicle's electric-drive motor. City-goers will be happy to hear that the system allows for each wheel to turn 90 degrees, making parallel parking as easy as driving sideways. The City Car is due to be shown off next year. Until then, we have this video to ogle at the very least.More details here,

N82 Hands on!
2007-11-09 10:14:00
After a hazy pic we saw last month, Symbian Freak finally got their hands on Nokia's latest offering, the N82. Along with the usual array of features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and USB connectivity, it rocks with GPS, the new Nokia Music Store, and the N-GAGE Gaming Platform. Also, according to Symbian Freak, N82 sports auto-screen rotation just like the iPhone. This means you don't need apps like rotateMe, which I had talked about last week. Not to forget is of course the 5-megapixel Carl Zeiss cam with Xenon flash.Click Here for more pics and details.

Pen Phone, a concept that just might work!
2007-11-09 10:04:00
This pic was sent by an anonymous tipster to Gizmodo this week. Cool design and a cooler concept, it just might be worthwhile to see this thing work! According to the tipster, his "company" wants to gauge consumer interest in products like these and that this was an unfinished product yet. All the technical feasibility issues aside, the real problem might turn to be able to not lose it!

The Android UI, Video and Pictures
2007-11-12 19:32:00
Here is a bunch of pics of Google and OHA's new OS, Android , in action. Also, a video of the user interface, looks pretty cool actually. The 6-min video shows off Android's capabilities using two mobile phones, one with a HTC-like device and the other a touchscreen phone. The touchscreen prototype looks more cool and it plays Quake!! $10 million dollars' worth of prize money ought to spur developers enough to start getting some apps out.The SDK is available here.Sources: YouTube & Engadget
