These little hand-made monsters from Berlin are one of the many forms of street art. If you look around closely you can find them sticking on signs, walls, lamp posts, trashcans, posters and any other urban surface in cities like Paris, Barcelona, Berlin and New York City. Check out their flickr photo album for some examples where they have been spotted. You can now also buy them as gifts and goodies online or at Silberfischer Homeshop in Berlin. See some more photos after the jump. (more…)

Dessous that make you blush 2007-10-20 16:08:51
These panties will make you blush
. Although we personally don’t wear womens underwear we still like to hang out in this fine boutique in Mitte. The interior design of the store is as beautiful as the dessous they sell. And they have become quite popular. A few months ago they even opened a men’s section called Balls with exquisite boxers and night wear. Read on for more ads, photos of the store and details.

Neon Lights 2007-10-18 12:02:06
This is not another stylish but overpriced iPod speaker system. It is a stylish but overpriced lamp. It goes by the name of LivingColors and is made by Philips. And it has to offer something: Via the touch sensitive color circle on its remote control you can adjust the light to all colors of the rainbow. This way you can change the color of your room to fit your mood. Fancy! We saw those lamps in a popular consumer electronic market located in the new shopping mall at Alexander Platz. But you can also get them here. They cost 149 EUR. A treat!

The New Mag In Town 2007-10-17 12:15:20
So, there is a new national lifestyle magazine made in Berlin. It’s called Front and it’s addressed to men who are either gay or straight but still into fashion and lifestyle. To not scare away the later group it leaves all the sexual stuff out that you will find in all the other gay magazines. So it’s absolutely safe to read in the subway or leave on the coffee table. The first issue features a fancy fashion spread and interview with young actor Kostja Ullmann, who is known for films such as Sommersturm, Verfolgt and his latest: Stellungswechsel. Also of interest: what Front thinks a perfect one-day-trip to Berlin should look like. More photos, videos and infos after the break.

French Cuisine 2007-10-13 10:37:43
La crapule is the french word for rascal. But you don’t have do be afraid that the waiters will be rascals in this nice rustic restaurant in Kreuzberg. They serve excellent french cuisine, with a mixed selection of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes. It’s difficult to make recommendations cause the menu changes quite often depending on what fish and meat types are available at the moment, but everything we’ve ever picked there was delicious. Of course they also have a wide selection of french wine and cidre and some amazing desserts. The details after the break.

Goldfrapp climb the Seventh Tree 2007-10-30 12:31:32
They are back! Goldfrapp
just announced their 4th studio album. It’s called Seventh Tree and will be out on Febuary 25th of next year. In a letter to their fans they describe it as “gilded in the butterfly colours of an English surrealism shared from Lear to Lennon. It shimmers and shines with the warmth of a hazy summer, an electric whirlpool over which Alison’s glistening voice soars.” Yeah, right… What drugs did they take? In an earlier letter they already mentioned that the new songs are going to be very different from their last album Supernature. After so many artists - even the ones that are way more popular then them - copied their style (the last to mention would be Kylie Mini-ogue with her new single 2 Hearts) it is no suprise that they are going in a different direction now. The album artwork and some song samples will be revealed very soon, so stay tuned.

Roisin Murphy’s Head-Banging-Accident 2007-10-30 03:09:44
The concert would have been on Thursday at Alte Kantine. But looks like that’s not gonna happen. During a wild performance in Moscow Roisin hit her face on a chair while head banging to her song Primitive. (There actually is a YouTube video of that, who would have thought…) All her upcoming concerts have been cancelled and will be post-poned to a later date. We’ll keep you posted on the new concert dates, until then we wish Roisin a good recovery.

A new designer phone 2007-10-31 12:06:40
After Dolce&Gabbana, Prada and Armani now comes the next fashion phone
. This time not from Italian designers but from one of the oldest American jeans brands: Levi’s. Created by French design manufacturer Modelabs the phone comes in a metal case and is available in 5 different color combinations. Against the current trend the credit card sized phone will have a regular keypad and not a touchscreen. Still it’s gonna cost about 500 EUR without a contract which is quite pricy for a phone with that range of features. In Germany it will be released in November and exclusively distributed by The Phone House. The only colors available here are gonna be brown and black, unfortunately, cause we like the silver one best. Check out an image of the brown phone as well as a video spot and shop details of The Phone House after the jump. What interests us even more: When is Diesel gonna release their own phone?

Fairytales with Eva Mendes 2007-11-08 00:00:49
The Italiens seem to have it with fancy things, don’t they. And what could be fancier than a meltdown of Italian designer dresses, a fashion photographer, a hot young Hollywood actress, a handful of half naked male models, 12 fairy tales and a bottle of blood red liquor? The outcome is the 9th Campari calender with photos of Eva Mendes
(We Own The Night, Ghostrider) in designer dresses of Max Chaoul, Roberto Cavalli, Alberta Ferretti and Elie Saab shot by Marino Parisotto depicting scenes from fairytales such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. The calendar is available in a limited adition of 9999 copies wordwide. More photos after the jump.

There goes the monster 2007-11-07 12:15:10
Building A Rocket, 98cm x 47cm
If you ever visited the flea market at Boxhagener Platz or the annual art market at Oberbaumbrücke you have probably stumbled across some of his creatures. They are green, hairy, slimy and disfigured, but still heart-warming and cute in their own morbid ways. May it be monsters, robots or funny looking animals. They all have a story to tell, drawn on wooden plates, window frames, signs and other left over surfaces of our society. Their father and creator is Californian artist and illustrator Mateo who relocated from San Francisco to Berlin in 2004 and opened his own gallery Zozoville together with Dutch art buddy Johan Potma whom he shares his passion for monsters with.
For our features series “The Makers” we’ve met Mateo and talked about Berlin, Monsters and Disney. Read on for more art, photos and the interview.

Scary delivery 2007-11-13 11:24:40
Yesterday we got a strange delivery to our home: A pizza we haven’t ordered along with a 1GB USB stick that read 03/11 in black marker. On the stick there was a scary little video called “Pass auf mich auf” (Keep me save). See the video after the jump. The words “Don’t push the button” as well as the url push11.com briefly appear in the video. On the website push11.com you can see an elevator that counts down the levels from 0 to -11. It will reach subfloor eleven on monday the 19th. Who knows what will happen then? Prior to receiving this video we had already heard about it from other bloggers who received the same. Everyone has their own idea of what this could be. Viral Marketing, an alternative reality game, a trailer for a film or book. My guess would be it’s a teaser trailer for an art event with video installations. Or maybe this is part of a dissertation about the meaning of blogs for alternative advertising campaigns. Celebrity-Alarm: Jared Leto 2007-11-11 15:20:08
Yesterday we were at the Redspective store to check out their new designs and artworks. And guess who came in: Jared
Leto, accompanied by a pretty blonde. He’s currently in town to shoot his next film Mr. Nobody which will be released in 2008. Looking back at the films he’s done in the last couple of years it seems he has a thing for messed up characters. In Requiem For A Dream he played a junkie, in Panic Room a psychotic thief, in Lonely Hearts a murdering gangster and in Chapter 27 the man who killed John Lennon. He’s also in a rock band called 30 Seconds To Mars. Another photo after the jump.(more…)

And the story unfolds… 2007-11-22 17:36:40
Last week I reported on a strange delivery we received at our home. Since then it has become more than just a scary video. The video led us to a website called push11.com that showed an elevator that went down a level each day. Last monday it arrived at level -11 and stopped. This day was a very exciting day. While Barbara from berlinkriminell.de, another receipient of the video, followed the number 11 and made an unexpected discovery at the Leipziger Platz 11 in the bar Eleven, the elevator on push11.com opened its doors, led us through the gloomy corridors of an old hospital and finally showed us the locked up door of room 217. This room number seems quite familiar, especially if you’ve read Steven Kings novel The Shining. But the reality is far less scary. On a later visit to the Charité hospital the room from the video was discovered, but it’s nothing more than a broom closet. But now let’s get back to the bar Eleven, where Barbara discovered a table with 11 ca Read more:story

Between Black and Gold 2007-11-21 17:29:05
Although this new store is practically around the corner someone had to point it out to us. Episoda opened its doors in July at Boxhagener Straße. The black and gold interior makes it stick out in between all those fashion boutiques of Friedrichshain. The monster mannequins are also good eyecatchers. When it comes to clothing Episoda doesn’t dissapoint: You’ll find an interesting selection of small English and Scandinavian brands such as Fly53, Björkvin and Gestuz. But in the future the store will most likely carry a lot of other brands so the focus will move from clothing lines to single pieces of different collections. More images and infos after the jump.

Wild At Harp 2007-11-20 10:00:48
In the last couple of years harpist Simonetta Ginelli has made a name for herself in the music and entertainment scene of Berlin, but not only as a musician. Everytime she sets her foot on stage you’ll find her dressed up in a new costume: Sometimes as a sexy bride, sometimes as a lovely Christmas angel, covered in rubber as a hot dominatrix or sometimes even naked with her dress painted on her bare skin. Her clients seem to love her extravagant looks. That’s why she gets booked for glamarous events such as an Eyes Wide Shut party for Breitling, the erotic varieté show Belle Et Fou, the Wella Trend Vision Award in Paris or for the Aids Gala at Theater des Westens.
We met the busy harpist and talked with her about Berlin and her instrument. Photos and interview after the jump.

From Big City Life to Africa 2007-11-28 07:00:14
“Someone once told me that the infamous Wall had broken the heart of the city right in two. As any songwriter can tell you, a heart struggling to repair itself can provide glorious creativity and painful yet profound insights.
On our first visit we partied the nights away in abandoned high-rise buildings squatted by peaceful revellers. Electronic music pulsed its way past the wrought iron sculptures and modern art pieces that decorated the premises. It was all irresistibly lawless. A free party in the centre of the city seemed a thousand miles away from London’s new exclusivity and social barriers.” This is what Marlon Roudette from UK based band Mattafix wrote before his upcoming promotional visit to Berlin last month. The talented singer, producer and songwriter with an angelic voice made his break through with Mattafix two years ago with the song Big City Life
and the debut album Signs of a Struggle. Especially here in Germany the album was a suprise hit and t Read more:Africa
Cafe with a view 2007-11-27 07:00:17
This cafe must definitely be the one with the best view in town. There is no prettier sight than the Gendarmenmarkt while sipping a cup of coffee or maybe a glass of champagne, don’t you agree? The cafe Shan Rahimkhan belongs to one of Berlin’s most wanted celebrity hair stylists by the same name who also owns a fabulous hair salon and a fancy interior design store next door. It not only has a spectacular view to the outside but also a remarkably tasteful interior. We especially love the lamps that give the cafe a very unique and charming look. When you walk by in the evening they glow with so much warmth and style that you just have to go inside. Read on for more infos and images.

The Cupcake Lady 2007-11-26 07:00:48
What was once totally unknown to us has now become one of our favourite daily treats: Cupcake
s. And who do we have to thank for that pleasure: Dawn Nelson from Cupcake Berlin, whom we fondly refer to as The Cupcake Lady. Her sinful cupcakes are in great demand. Not only do the inhabitants of Friedrichshain love them, she also made celebrities like Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise addicted while they were filming at Babelsberg. But Dawn has not always been a cupcake baker. She was born and raised in Florida, but moved around the states a lot working as a makeup artist for MAC cosmetics and as a freelancer. That’s probably the reason why her cupcakes look tres chic. The pink creams and purple sprinkles must be the remnants of her days of rouge and eyeshadows. We had a little chat with her about Berlin and cupcakes for our feature series “The Makers”. Read the interview and see some photos after the jump. (more…)

Something’s coming… 2007-11-25 09:36:34
New Yorkers seem to have it coming with terror and destructions. There’s a new movie coming with some more smoking towers and flying pieces. Luckily this time more of the fictional type. J.J. Abrams, the guy who brought as TV shows such as Alias and Lost, and who is currently filming the next Star Trek movie, now brings us Cloverfield - a movie about monsters, hysteria and destruction. And the trailer is actually quite interesting. It looks like a documentary style Blair Witch Project meets a full blown action spectacle of the Godzilla kind. See the trailer after the jump.
