Looking at the history of hydroponics farming, one would find that its development has not seen any rapid increase and interest in this form of farming grew in the United States around the year 1925. Because of certain difficulties with replacing greenhouse soils at very close intervals and their high maintenance needs, there began to be conducted research to look for nutrient solutions as a good replacement for natural soil and this led to scientists coming up with aerated nutrient solutions and thus began the history of hydroponics farming.Large Scale Production Of CropsThe next ten years saw a lot of development of this method so that it could be used in large scale production of crops. And, following the Second World War, there was a flowering of interest in the US southwest though without much success. When the advent of plastics took place some twenty years later, there was a renewed interest and the history of hydroponics farming took one more step forward. Plastics had a number

2007-10-11 17:07:00
Hydroponic gardening can be an excellent way to grow a large amount of fruits and vegetables in a limited area. However, it’s much more than just growing plants in a water-nutrient system without soil. There are many variables, all of which depend on the space available, your budget and how much time is available to spend on maintenance. There then are some tips that will help to make your hydroponic experience pleasant and productive.Number 1: Get Your Plants Off to a Good StartWhen seeds first sprout, they are said to be germinating. In hydroponic gardening, this happens within a growing medium, which can be any number of things. The best choices are composted bark, expanded clay, gravel, peat moss or sand. Rockwool, oasis and perlite are less desirable; vermiculite should be avoided at all costs, as it is often contaminated with asbestos fibers that can have grave consequences for one’s respiratory health.Keep in mind that every type of plant has its own specific needs when it c

Basic Square Foot Gardening
2007-10-11 17:05:00
Square foot gardening is a way to make the most of your garden's space. Rather than planting in straight rows, you garden in built up squares of soil that allow you to easily reach all four sides of the square and maximizes the space in your garden.Start out by building or buying squares that are 4 feet by 4 feet in size. You will be planting in these containers with each plant (or groups of smaller plants) having a 1 foot by 1 foot area. Leave three feet between each container to make access easier. The advantage to square foot gardening is that you can reach everything. You do not have to step on any plants, drag a hose across them, etc. Since you build these above ground you will have fewer weeds to deal with. The one disadvantage is that they may need more water. You do not want to crowd the plants. A good layout giving each plant plenty of room to thrive is one of the key factors of successful square foot gardening. You can mix things up as you like, however. A mixture of vegetables

Fall Gardening - A Quieter Time In The Garden?
2007-10-11 16:54:00
In the fall as the nights draw in and the days become shorter many people think that a quiet and restful time for the gardener is approaching and that it's almost time to put the garden tools away in the shed till spring. While this may be true for the lawn mower, there are many other garden tools whose services can still be required during the fall. For the more serious gardener who wants to continue to grow as late in the season as possible or who wants to optimise his lawn and garden in preparation for next year. There is still much gardening that can be done, both in growing vegetables and preparing and planning your garden for next spring, until well into the fall. With the constant possibility of early winter frosts many gardeners don't even consider fall gardening. This is a pity as with the right planning, planting the most suitable plants and at the right time of year, the rewards can be well worth the extra work. Hydroponics Gardening - Gardening Without Soil
2007-10-11 16:53:00
Simply put, hydroponics gardening is “soil less” (without soil) gardening. The term was coined by UC Davis Professor Gerike in 1929. He took the Greek word for agriculture "geoponics" and came up with the term "hydroponics". “Soil less” gardening experimentation had been around for some time; however, professor Gerike was the first to demonstrate that plants could be grown to full size without soil. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon and Floating Gardens of China are thought to be the first instances of “soil less” gardening in the history of man. There are seven basic categories of hydroponics systems (methods): passive, water culture, flood and drain, drip, wick, nutrient film technique, and “aeroponic.”The passive system is the simplest of the hydroponics systems. The roots of the plants are surrounded by a medium of some kind that has air holes like rockwool, perlite or gravel. The plant is then suspended so that it is immersed in the nutrient solution. The plant absorbs

Great Gardening Ideas For Your Used Coffee Grounds
2007-10-03 11:31:00
We are big believers and followers of organic farming and gardening. But alongside that we also enjoy a cup of really GOOD coffee. This ends up in a pretty large pile of used coffee grounds from our plungers by the end of the week. We personally like plunger coffee better than the drip filter stuff. The eco-nature of the our lifestyle negates the use of electric percolators etc and the plunger lets us each control how strong we want the blend! This also leaves a really course ground coffee which we need to dispose of on the island. So what to do with the used grounds? Well we collect them all in a special bucket and transfer them up to our organic farm and garden. Luckily with the volume of farming and gardening done by Jeanie and Josefa, these grounds never go to waste! Here are some tips for making great use of those otherwise wasted resources. (I wonder what Starbucks does with its daily tonnes of used grounds?)Read the rest of the article here.....

A Basic Introduction To Greenhouse Vegetable Gardening
2007-10-22 13:03:00
For those of you looking to expand your gardening hobby, or those of you that wish to grow fruits, vegetables, or flowers in a climate that typically makes growing difficult, greenhouse gardening may be the hobby for you. Greenhouse vegetable gardening is becoming growing in popularity as greenhouses are now very economical, available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and can allow you to enjoy gardening in even the smallest of locations all year long. What Is a Greenhouse?A greenhouse is simply a structure with a glass, or perhaps a plastic roof, and also generally has glass or plastic walls as well. When located in a sunlit location the solar radiation heats the structure and the air warmed in this manner is retained in the building. The glass used works as a selective transmission medium for different spectral frequencies, which has the effect of trapping the energy within, which in effect heats both the plants and the ground inside. Greenhouses thus work by trapping electromagn
