The Curse of Being A Fan
2007-10-23 11:28:00
Right now on the World Wide Leader's website there is a headline that says "Poll: 1 in 5 fans do things to avoid jinxing favorites." Now other then the obvious ridiculousness of that headline it did cause me to stop and think because if there is one thing you should all know about me it's that I am highly superstitious. I have started to get better lately as I had the guts to not wear my Jonathan Papelbon jersey during Game 5 of the ALCS (I figured it hadn't worked since Game 1 time to switch things up a bit), and Game 6 was seen from the couch of the SPSR Cape House and not on the couch at my fathers house with him. At no time was I comfortable with my decision however in both instances things worked out and my playing against the jinx had no effect on the outcome of either game. However, the point that this has led me to is "what types of superstitions do you have about your favorite teams?"It's strange that ESPN ran that headline on their website this morning because it's somet

Back By Popular Demand
2007-10-22 08:52:00
Last night as soon as Coco Crisp killed himself making the catch on the final out of the 2007 ALCS there was only one thing on the minds of media people and fans alike - what will Papelbon do now. Well ladies and gentlemen back by popular demand it's the second in what I hope is a three part series. After the jump Papelbon dances to celebrate the 2007 ALCS Champion Boston Red Sox. In case you're wondering his dance partner at the beginning is a member of the Dropkick Murphy's because that is who belongs on the field after securing a spot in the World Series.

Now That I've Had A Moment
2007-10-22 08:05:00
Now that I've had a moment to regain my composure I'm going to talk about the Red Sox. I know that a lot of you out there in the Nation would rather I stick a needle up your penis hole then talk about the Sox but I really have no choice - I could talk about the Patriots but that'd probably be worse for some of you. There are a lot of people who hate the Red Sox because of what happened after 2004; the pink hats, the ridiculous crowds in visiting teams ballparks, people who really thought Manny Ortiz was someone on the team, and Fever Pitch. But the only group of people who hates that breed of fan more then outsiders who see them as the epitome of Red Sox fandom is people like me - people who love this team and have loved this team our whole lives. The people who remember Pedro coming out of the bullpen in Game 5 against Cleveland in 1999, or the people who still haven't forgiven Jose Canseco and Mo Vaughn for mailing in the playoffs in '95, and if anyone even reminds me of the yea

Holy Shit
2007-10-21 23:06:00
I am speechless right now. The Sox got enough out of Dice-K, a huge outing from Hideki Okajima and then Papelbon slammed the door. The offense got nothing out of Ortiz, almost nothing out of Manny and they still put up 11 runs. It's Rocks and Sox starting Wednesday and I could not be more pumped right now. A very good series from the Indians and tonight I never felt comfortable but after Beckett stepped up in Game 5 and brought the series back to Boston you could feel momentum turning. What a series, what a game and I can't wait for the World Series again. In the words of Ted Sarandis "WOW!"

Elevate The Threat Levels
2007-10-21 17:45:00
The deputy mayor of the Indian capital Delhi died on Sunday after being attacked by a horde of wild monkeys. SS Bajwa suffered serious head injuries when he fell from the first-floor terrace of his home on Saturday morning trying to fight off the monkeys. The city has long struggled to counter its plague of monkeys, which invade government complexes and temples, snatch food and scare passers-by.There is a lot to hate about America - we consider ourselves the world police, insert our military into situations they don't belong, don't have universal health care or affordable college education and we bought into the free market economy so much that there isn't a single job left for anyone without a doctorate. However, what we don't have is roving bands of monkeys killing our government officials.I think it's obvious what happened here - India must have an underground monkey fighting cartel much like dog fighting rings in the United States. The weaker monkeys have all been weeded out/d

Josh Beckett Is The Balls
2007-10-19 09:50:00
If you didn't already know this Josh Beckett is fantastic. After the game last night he dropped a line that if I was 8 years younger would without a doubt have been my high school yearbook quote: "I don't get paid to make these fucking decisions." Absolutely fantastic. Also it's official Beckett was happy that Danielle Peck was in the crowd last night and you know "God Bless America" wasn't the last time he saw her yesterday. After the jump thanks to the world beaters at Barstool Sports check out Beckett in all his glory.

I was talking with a buddy of mine earlier in the week and we were wondering how high a Patriots line would have to be in order to scare me away? We both settled on 28 points which seems ridiculous but outside of maybe two games left on the schedule this season are there any teams in the NFL that you feel can hang with the Patriots? So if you're Vegas don't you have to make the line just out of this world insane to keep people away from the Pats and onto whoever their playing? I went 2-2 again last week winning my Patriots pick and the Eagles over the Jets while losing on both St. Louis and Arizona. I feel like my Arizona pick should be set aside since Kurt Warner forgot to sacrifice a virgin to God before the game and couldn't last a quarter. This week we're back to potentially good football which was missed last weekend. As always the home team is in caps.HOUSTON (+1.5) over Tennessee- So either Vince Young will be playing with an injured leg, or Kerry Collins will be playing and

Man vs Machine: College Football
2007-10-19 07:30:00
I have obviously completely lost control of the 2007 season and I know I'm not alone on that one. Last night Rutgers beat USF which means that every team ranked either 1 or 2 at some point this season has now lost a game this season except Ohio State. I'm not that surprised by the Rutgers outcome because that is a good team - people have forgotten how highly touted they were coming into the season and just like everyone else they hit that bump in the road and everyone seems to have written them off. Frankly I am done trying to figure out this season though so this weeks picks will hopefully be close to accurate but since my entire system can be thrown out the window at this point I honestly would not be surprised to go o-fer again. As always the home team is in caps.Louisville (-4.5) over UCONN- I know that UConn is a one loss team but this team is a fraud. I think Louisville on the other hand might have started to figure things out after last weeks win over Cincinnati and even thoug

Put Up Or Shut Up
2007-10-18 18:47:00
Well you might say that the Red Sox have backed themselves into a corner and it's do or die tonight. With Beckett on the mound this is the best chance the Red Sox have of winning since Game 1 and hopefully they can get the W tonight because I'm not ready to have the season end tonight - maybe in a couple days but not tonight. We've also got the Bruins on NESN and Rutgers/USF playing on ESPN so the clicker will be in full effect all night. After the jump we'll kick start the live blog - hopefully we get some comments throughout the game but if you want to experience the game in the least exciting manner please read along. BOTTOM 9THPapelbon is in I think we can close the door on this one. Tim McCarver just told a story about Jonathan Papelbon missing the bus during spring training and Francona asked him "how do you miss the bus?" to which Papelbon responds "I thought it would pick me up at my condo" like a school bus. This ladies and gentleman is why he is my favorite player on this

Live Blogging The End
2007-10-18 14:35:00
If tonight is going to be the end of the road for the Boston Red Sox I want to be there making weight bench jokes in live blog format. So while I might take the rest of the afternoon off (much like I took most of the morning off) from writing anything new come back tonight for the live blog. If you're not near a TV, radio or ESPN gamecast it's the best way to keep up with the action.

The Indians Are Diabolical
2007-10-18 14:01:00
Country music artist Danielle Peck will sing the national anthem and "God Bless America" at tonight's Indians game. She will not sing, "Stand by Your Man." Peck, it turns out, dated Red Sox pitching ace Josh Beckett, who is starting tonight's do-or-die game against the Tribe and who handed them their only loss in the American League Championship Series. The Indians claim they had no idea of the love connection when they announced Tuesday that Peck would replace Taylor Swift as tonight's vocalist. "It's an incredible coincidence. Honestly," said Indians spokesman Bob DiBiasio. "This isn't another bug thing."Ladies and gentlemen this is how you win huge playoff games. I'm sure some members of the Nation have been in the same place with an ex girlfriend once or twice and had the feeling that you can't even remember how to breath because you're doing everything in your power to show how great you are. Josh Beckett is the only reliable starter the Sox have right now in the playoffs

Usually I'd come up with something witty to say here but since I haven't been funny in weeks on this site why start now. I feel that as a confessed gambling addict I have a duty to pass this story along. I have played online poker (not so much today) a lot in the past and there is one thing that I always assumed - that it was legit. Well it appears that I might have been mistaken. If you've ever played online poker or ever plan on gambling online please check out this story about Absolute Poker from the NY Times Blog.Mega huge hat tip to Steven Levitt

Where Is The Podcast?
2007-10-16 10:31:00
Alright for the one guy out there who is wondering where the Six Pack Sportscast went - I am still planning on doing it. I usually do the podcast on Tuesday morning but last week I had school on Tuesday and this week I have been swamped with writing a paper so it's been pushed back a bit. I am only writing this update because I just recently installed Skype and I'm wondering if anyone out there in the GenPop would be interested in cohosting on an episode? If you've got Skype and you think it might be entertaining to make dead hooker jokes with yours truly then send me an email theoriginaljd[at]sixpacksportsreport.com

Someone Get Wade A Depth Chart
2007-10-16 09:51:00
I really didn't want to talk about the Cowboys today. I was going to write about the Red Sox and the people who want to start Josh Beckett tonight against the Indians but then I read Tim Cowlishaw's piece on Wade Phillips and I couldn't help myself. Even those people who hate Tom Brady more than AIDS and childhood leukemia combined would have to admit that the way to beat the Patriots is to try - even if it's a fools plan - to stop the pass and make the running game of the Patriots beat you. Everyone would agree with that plan - except of course Cowboys Head Coach Wade Phillips who in the Dallas Morning News is quoted as saying: "You've got to stop the run, You want to make them pass it, and then you've got to get turnovers and get pressure. We ran into a similar deal last year with Brady." Think about that quote for a minute, let it sink into your brain so that you understand just how goddamn stupid someone would have to be to say that.I mean on the one hand Wade is right - last

Where Is That Weight Bench?
2007-10-15 13:09:00
As most of you out there in the Nation know I am currently a third year law student. All that this means is that I can write incredibly long run on sentences without ever actually using the English language. What is also means is that by the end of the summer next year I will be taking the bar exam and might actually be able to call myself a lawyer - for real this time not just when I meet new people at a bar. Becoming a lawyer seems like something that someone would want right? I mean it's a job, from everything I've seen on TV it pays well, and it involves a lot of funny wisecracks from older partners in the law firm that you obviously get a job from just by graduating law school. However, today my car broke down - and I realized that becoming a lawyer is something a retard would do because if I was an auto mechanic I would have been out of school six years ago and I'd be able to rape idiots who went to law school when their car brakes down.Is there a more powerful job in the worl

What The Hell?
2007-10-15 10:21:00
If there is one thing that we know about college football this year it's that we don't know anything. When the first pre-season poll came out the University of South Florida was ranked - nowhere, they weren't ranked at all because they're USF and nobody would ever have seen USF as a legitimate threat. As it stands right now the Bulls from Tampa, Florida are #1 in the BCS rankings. In the Coaches and AP polls you've got Ohio State #1, and Boston College #3 sandwhiched around that same USF team - nowhere in the national title picture right now is LSU, Florida, or USC who two weeks ago seemed to be the clear cut favorites to hang around until the end of the season. Some people love this insane college football season but personally I think it sucks, and it stinks and it sucks (sorry I turned into Rick Pitino there). College football isn't supposed to have parity, there is no draft, there is no free agency - the best schools are supposed to be the best schools and USF is not supposed

HandshakeGate Part 2
2007-10-14 19:20:00
I preface this by saying that I'm writing this before I've heard anything from Wade Phillips, Bill Belichick or anyone else involved but I am sure that for the next week all we're going to hear about is the cold fish handshake between the Cowboys and Patriots coaches after the Pats finished embarassing the Cowboys in front of their home crowd. I am sure that all the Cowboys fans will come out in droves about how unclassy it was of Belichick to let his fifth string running back score a touchdown with 30 seconds left of a two score game. Well I want to be the first person to tell all of those people who are even thinking about making that argument to suck a dick.I realize that the trendy thing to do in the NFL right now is to bash the Patriots as being a gang of thugs. The Browns all but got Mike Vrabal fined because of something he did on a spike play. The Jets are probably still blaming the fact that they can't win a football game on Belichick and his sideline cameras, and the Eagl

Man vs Machine: Pro Football
2007-10-14 00:20:00
Really late pro football picks this week because I'm actually not playing any of these games. This might be the worst slate of football games in the history of the NFL and other then the Cowboys/Patriots as a late game is there one game on this schedule that you're interestd in watching? I'd hope that the NFL never puts the Steelers and Colts on a bye week the same time ever again because without those two teams, and with the Patriots and Cowboys playing one another there is a serious lack of star power here. As a recap I was 2-2 last week bringing my season record up to 8-11-1 and I haven't been able to get over the hump all season lets hope things turn around this week when I don't have money on these games. As always the home team is in caps.Philadelphia (-4) over NEW YORK JETS- I really am not confident that the Eagles are any good - but I am very confident that the Jets are horrible. I think this will be the beginning of the Kellen Clemens era in New York because you can only

Romo v. Brady: The Showdown
2007-10-12 13:23:00
There has been a lot written and said about the Cowboys/Patriots game on Sunday afternoon and for good reason. I have been looking through the lines for Sunday and this is going to be one of the worst weeks of football this season - nice of major league baseball to schedule the ALCS for Sunday, oh wait. With all of that in mind I've once again forgone a How Hot Is feature for this Friday to instead put the Cowboys/Patriots game to the ultimate test. Tony Romo and Tom Brady are two good looking dudes who have managed to pull off some seriously high quality tail. Brady has impregnated everyone he has come into contact with but is currently with Gisele Bundchen (who may only not be pregnant because she is/was a 14 year old boy), and Tony Romo somehow got the Devil to throw in Carrie Underwood when he sold his soul. So Nation like last week when I left it up to you to determine once and for all Rachel Nichols or Erin Andrews - this week it's your turn to determine Carrie Underwood or Gis

Peter King Beats A Dead Horse
2007-10-12 12:29:00
Every Friday around noon Peter King calls into WEEI and talks with the Dale and Holley show. For those of you living outside Massachusetts the D&H show is sandwiched between two insufferable conservatives talking shit about the state and it's governor, and four insufferable fat guys talking out of both sides of their asses about the Patriots and Red Sox. In other words it's the only thing on EEI that a normal person can listen to without contemplating suicide five times an hour. So King is on the station right now talking about - what else - CameraGate. Don't be fooled into thinking that it was one passing remark, Peter King isn't talking about anything other then CameraGate and it's Week 6 of the NFL season. What does King want? I mean he obviously is not letting this thing with Belichick go. He's obviously going around to everyone who will talk to him about what the Patriots did and how awful Roger Goodell has handled the situation. Even today Wade Phillips had to come out and

Man vs Machine: College Football
2007-10-12 09:31:00
Well it's officially I have completely lost my grasp on the 2007 NCAA Football season. After being at or above .500 all season last week I went a breathtaking 0-4 and all but assured myself that I'll wind up under .500 when the season ends. For the early part of the season I could do no wrong - every pick I made came true, but when the going got tough I took a gamble on some real awful games. I apologize to anyone who thought I knew what I was doing with Georgia, Bowling Green or South Florida. I won't apologize for Arizona State because that pick should have worked out and I'm still bitter that it didn't. I've still got the lead over the machine but I think that has more to do with me picking one more game then the XBox being worse at this then I am. I'm hoping for a huge bounce back weekend so we're going no picture to distract me - as always the home team is in caps.Hawaii (-17.5) over SAN JOSE STATE- This pick is completely irrational. Ready For Some Old Timey Baseball?
2007-10-11 18:52:00
As a Red Sox fan I am excited about the ALCS starting tomorrow night. Sure it's been six months since a baseball game has been played but the team that I've rooted for my entire life is 4 wins away from their second World Series in three years. As a baseball fan I'm really excited about the prospect of this ALCS being one of the best all around series in some time. With Beckett/Sabathia going in game 1, and Schilling/Carmona in game 2 you've got arguably two of the best post season pitchers of recent memory going up against arguably the best one/two punch in baseball this season. Most of all though I am excited for game 4 - because even though it won't be a great pitchers duel the match up that was announced today will be the greatest old timey baseball game that we've ever seen.During the week leading up to the ALCS (when did the ALCS become the Super Bowl?) there was a lot of speculation in Boston that Tim Wakefield might not be on the LCS roster, or he might not be in the rota

Sunday has the potential to be a pretty fun day in my neck of the woods with the Patriots playing the Redskins and game 4 of the World Series there might be some partying in the streets that night. What is the deal with the NFL putting a regular season game in the middle of the season in London? Wouldn't this have made much more sense in Week 1? I mean the Dolphins are already a complete train wreck and now you're going to fly them half way across the world to play a game in front of people who honestly don't give a shit about American football and someone thought this was a good idea? I feel bad for the Giants who had been dialed in lately and if there is one thing that could throw a wrench into your plans it's having to fly to London and eat fish and chips for a week. Ah well it's all part of global expansion but next year I vote we send St. Louis and Miami and then leave them both over there. Last week I went 0-4 and things have resumed to being terrible for my football picks.

Epic Blog Game 2
2007-10-25 17:09:00
Hopefully you joined me last night over at Epic Carnival for my Game 1 Live Blog because we had a great time. Of course the game was over after the first three innings but that didn't stop us from having a great turn out, banging out over 50 comments and just enjoying a crappy game with the EC crew. I'm not doing the live blog tonight as I've handed off the baton to Davey from Blown Coverage but I still hope you all jump on over to Epic Carnival for the live blog kicking off whenever Game 2 starts.

The Worst Person Ever?
2007-10-25 09:35:00
I've said some pretty messed up stuff in my day but I think that WWE World Champion Dave Batista has me in check mate when it comes to saying the worst thing ever said. You see Batista - who is a walking billboard for steroid abuse, just released a book about his life because if there is one person who I need to know more about it's the WWE World Champion. Contained in this book are stories from the road, tales of being in the ring with some of the most recognized names in professional wrestling, and the details of his sordid past including I guess his sex addiction. I should note that people who claim to have a sex addiction should be drawn and quartered. That's like saying I have a breathing addiction - I mean isn't sex one of the basic elements of human life? It'd be one thing if his addiction involved a hermaphrodite holding a kitten against his balls while sticking a finger in his ass - but just plain old sex? I'm pretty sure everyone would like to have that at all times the

Quick story since nobody needs to hear about my horrible college football picks anymore. On Tuesday there was a big rally in Boston for Barack Obama where our Governor Deval Patrick was going to endorse the candidacy of Senator Obama. Well I thought the whole thing was run pretty well except for the music they were playing while everything was getting set up. I only noticed the entire situation because when I got to the spot where the ralley was being held (in the middle of Boston Common on my way to get my car) the song being played was Leanne Rimes "Nothing Better To Do." I'm not sure what the message was here by Senator Obama but if it was "come check out my ralley because honestly what else are you going to do on a Tuesday night" then it was effective because there was a pretty good looking turnout. Anyways I wonder if the Nation has any thoughts on what music you'd be playing at a political rally.Last week I went 2-2 again and I really need to turn it around. I think it's safe

The Epic Live Blog
2007-10-24 17:59:00
This is super late in the game but I felt it was my duty to inform the Nation. Tonight I will be over at Epic Carnival doing a live blog of Game 1 of the World Series. Doug was very persuasive in his begging and I was convinced that for posterity sake I should do a blog of this night. The Sox are 2-0 during games that I live blog so let's hope some of that magic rubs off on me. So if you're not doing much tonight jump on over to EPIC CARNIVAL and taunt me throughout the evening.
