Dan Shanoffs Best Idea Ever
2007-10-24 11:15:00
There are certain things in life that I wasn't sure I'd ever admit to. I never thought I'd admit to purchasing tickets to a musical, I never thought I'd come to terms with an unhealthy appreciation for transsexual pornographers, and I never thought I'd read something by Dan Shanoff that made total sense to me. However, as of this moment right now all of those things has happened. Don't take this the wrong way - Shanoff is incredibly talented, and is a very good writer. His daily blog is required reading in my mind but the man is a world famous bandwagon jumper. I am a little late to the party with this but yesterday Shanoff presented his best article ever - and it had to do with Rick Reilly leaving SI for ESPN and how Will Leitch should replace Reilly at Sports Illustrated. I'd like to throw my own spin on the topic though so lets see if that can be done. Will Leitch would be a coup for Sports Illustrated the magazine and more importantly the dot com. It's obvious that Deadspin

By now it's well known that we lost one of our great velvety voices. Rest In Peace Robert Goulet what? Goulet - you will be missed. I tried to find the video of Goulet singing "The Impossible Dream" at Fenway on Opening Day this past year but I couldn't find it. Instead here is "Red Ships of Spain."

How Low Can You Go?
2007-10-31 17:18:00
I want to preface this by saying I have absolutely no idea who Mark Kriegel is. All I know about him is that he writes for FoxSports and I write for a blog in my bedroom with pajama pants on - so I'm really not in the strongest position to be taking shots at another writer. I hate to stoop to this level because I think it comes off as petty and vindictive but I think that Mr. Kriegel crossed whatever line there is out there. First and foremost he wrote a piece about the upcoming Colts/Patriots game and talked about the Good vs Evil comparison. This was a novel story idea ten days ago when Greg Easterbrook wrote the exact same article. Luckily for Kriegel nobody reads that pesky ESPN. Anyways in his piece today Kriegel makes this observation:Whatever happens, Dungy will take it in stride. He has survived worse losses. In fact, he has survived the worst loss of all, the suicide of his teenage son in 2005. It's a wonder anyone pulls through something like that. But you can't help but c

Anti-Patriots Sing-A-Long
2007-10-31 12:36:00
Alright I'm pretty swamped this afternoon which is why I haven't posted anything of substance. I have some stuff in the works that will hopefully be up later so you faithful Nation members can calm down it's coming. However, to tide you over I think we've all established how I feel about the claims of "running up the score" and "unsportsmanlike conduct" by the Patriots so I wanted to throw you guys a bone. In my mind this is a pro-Patriots song even though it's about injuring Tom Brady because it clearly states that the NFL doesn't have anyone or anything that can stop him without resorting to injuring him (which seems to be agreed upon by everyone in the media). So after the jump enjoy a little "Go Gillooly"Credit: Barstool Sports

Flowery Language Is For Douches

Greg Easterbrook is a douche. He is a the worst type of "journalist" in that his entire schtick seems to be based on personal agenda and vendetta's that he has for certain individuals. It is one thing for the guys over at Kissing Suzy Kolber to call Bill Belichick the anti-Christ and call for a bounty on the knees of Tom Brady. Those guys aren't being paid by ESPN, the World Wide Leader as it were. Gregg Easterbrook doesn't just hold some sort of personal hatred for Bill Belichick he has legitimately gone over the deep end. I know it's a fools mission to even discuss Easterbrook because he obviously doesn't care about things like facts, and respect, or integrity and because of that what good does it do to show how wrong he is - but I wanted to point something out about what he wrote concerning the Patriots throttling of the Washington Redskins just to show how Easterbrook has let his personal agenda infect his writing. In a nationally televised game, Bill Belichick went out of his

I know that my head is in the clouds after the Red Sox last night but I would be doing a disservice to you - the loyal Nation members by not talking about the New England Patriots domination of the Washington Redskins yesterday afternoon. In case you haven't heard the Patriots are real good, Tom Brady is very good, and Bill Belichick maybe, just maybe is sending a message to the rest of the NFL. That message seems to be that he doesn't give a damn about what you think of him or his tactics, everyone called into question how good the Patriots really were and now they're just going to blow the friggin doors off everyone in their path. I think even Sherman had more sympathy for people when he was burning his way through the South. I believe at some point during the beatdown that the Redskins received yesterday Troy Aikmen turned on the Patriots because it became obvious that they were going to try to keep scoring - even up 38-0. This has become a major talking point against the team th

Still Speechless
2007-10-29 08:26:00
I am absolutely stunned. I have been looking at this blank page for twenty minutes trying to find the words that I want to use to convey the feeling that I have today. I have read everything I can find on the interweb about what went down last night just trying to spark some creative force in my brain so that I can memorialize this moment. But I'm at a loss for words. In a World Series that seemed completely devoid of any sort of tense edge of your seat thrills last night was everything that I had imagined it could be and more. I feel like I slept for 10 minutes last night, and that might not have been very far from the truth. I couldn't turn the TV off as channel after channel showed Mike Lowell with his MVP trophy, and Jason Varitek openly crying. I am thankful to John Henry and the ownership group - because the feeling that I had last night after Jonathan Papelbon closed out the World Series was one of those feelings that I'll never forget. You can say what you want about the Red

Welcome To The Dark Side Indy
2007-11-05 12:23:00
Well I've waited all morning and into the afternoon for the flood of "The Colts Are Filthy Cheaters" articles to start popping up on the major sports websites. Alas to the surprise of nobody there hasn't been one word said concerning what was obviously evidence that the Colts pump crowd noise into the RCA Dome when the visitors have the ball. In case you missed it when the fourth quarter started Tom Brady connected with Randy Moss on a short slant - it is clearly audible that the crowd noise begins to skip which means that either the Indy fans all collectively suffered massive head trauma and began stuttering out of control - or as has always been the rumor the Colts do in fact pump in fake crowd noises during home games.Does this news come as a surprise to anyone? Of course it doesn't. First and foremost everyone with half a brain knew that the Colts have always pumped crowd noise into the stadium during the games. There is a reason that teams going into Indy to play the Colts prac

Well the preview of the AFC Championship game lived up to some of the hype in that the Patriots did not blow the Colts out and the game was exciting right until the end. On the other hand it wasn't a well played game by any stretch of the imagination and some of the calls in the game were so horrendous that I half expected Tim Donoghy to be working as the back judge. I'll just do a quick wrap of the game and my thoughts from a New England stand point. If anyone in the Nation is a Colts fan and would like to throw their two cents in either post in the comments, or email me and I'll give you your own thread.Going into this game I gave the Colts defense absolutely zero credit and that was apparently the wrong approach. I don't think that Bob Sanders did anything that made me step back and think - oh yeah I understand why ESPN devoted an entire week to covering this guy. However, I do think that Matt Light and Nick Kazur are going to have nightmares of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis

I understand that the aim of the NFL is to have parity throughout the league. What is happening in New England and Indianapolis is really abnormal in the present day NFL and I think that is the goal. However, one thing that happens when there is this system in place to bring everyone towards a level playing field is that you get a league full of teams that nobody really cares to watch play. If you look at the slate of games this week and try to pick out the games that you might care to watch as an unaffiliated fan you'd be hard pressed to find more then three or four. I wonder if DirecTV gets upset about this as they try to convince people to purchase their NFL package. I mean why would I want to spend extra to have the opportunity to watch the Redskins play the Jets, or the 49ers play the Falcons? I think I'll stick with my basic cable and just watch the Patriots/Colts, and Cowboys/Eagles thanks. Anyways I went 3-1 last weekend and it might be time to start talking about Derek Ander

It is becoming abundantly clear that I no longer have any grasp over this college football season. Virginia Tech should have given me at least one win last weekend but they decided to stop playing defense at the end of the game - oh and stop playing offense after the first quarter. I went an unbelievable 0-4 last weekend and I can feel this season slipping away. I started off like a house on fire with two straight undefeated weekends in a row but things have gone from bad to worse to my kneecaps might be in danger if I don't turn it around. I wish I could tell you that I feel confident about this slate of games but I couldn't feel less sure of anything in the world. I'd keep rambling on about this whole ordeal but let's just get to the picks and move on shall we? As always the home team is in caps.Rutgers (+1) over UCONN- This thing with UConn has to end right? At Least He Didn't Run Up The Score
2007-11-02 10:07:00
Where is the outrage this morning? Where is Skip Bayless dancing on table tops and proclaiming the end of humanity? Where is Greg Easterbrook writing a dissertation on how the NFL has been forever sullied and the earth might as well open up and swallow us all right now because the end of days is coming? Basically what I'm asking is why the fuck is there not more outrage over the Andy Reid situation this morning? Why does this Santa Claus looking bastard still have a job? Wake up Roger Goodell, wake up NFL, wake up Philadelphia the integrity of your game is being called into question and all you seem to be worried about is whether or not Joe Gibbs got his feelings hurt last weekend. How does Roger Goodell feel about this entire situation? Funny you should ask: "People living in your house and people on your property is your responsibility. And it is your responsibility to deal with that and make sure they are reflecting on you positively and in the way you want them to." Wow that's a p

Finally Science Is Good For Something

"A beer after playing a game of football, a long run, or a strenuous round of golf can be good for the body, scientists say. In a rare piece of good news for those who like a pint, Spanish researchers say beer can help someone who is dehydrated retain liquid better than water. Prof Manuel Garzon, of Granada University, also claimed the bubbles in beer help to quench the thirst and that its carbohydrate content can help to replace lost calories."How is it possible that Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize while Manuel Garzon is stuck teaching at Granada University? Was he installed there by Reagan during the 80s? I didn't even know there was a University in Grenada but apparently they're doing God's work down there. You have to love this study for so many reasons but mainly because one of the categories that they studied was a "strenuous round of golf." Only someone who wants to drink beer instead of water to rehydrate themselves after exercise would ever partake in something they consi

If you haven't seen the video yet - last night Jonathan Papelbon was on the David Letterman show and if this video doesn't prove once and for all that Papelbon is funnier then Dane Cook then I'm not sure what does. Without a doubt my favorite part of the interview is Papelbon telling Dave "I was probably gonna go deep" when talking about being on deck during the World Series. After the jump check out the full interview, including Papelbon revealing that David Ortiz is a "bedazzler" oh and he drops a Josh Beckett like F bomb.

Quick confession here before we get into this - I am a huge fan of professional wrestling. When I was a kid I got hooked on the WWE and because of a very close soon-to-be familial relation I still watch the "E" to this day. However, what I enjoy more then the main stream wrestling shows that you get on TV, is the independent wrestling scene highlighted by Ring Of Honor, Full Impact Pro, and Pro Wrestling Guerilla. If you're a West Coast indy wrestling fan you know all about PWG, and you know all about Human Tornado . Well Craig Williams aka Human Tornado was awesome enough to exchange emails with me and I wanted to post those because I became a huge fanboy while talking to him and you should all be able to experience my joy. Before getting into it I want to give those of you not familiar with Human Tornado exactly what you're dealing with here. Is there football being played this week? When the Patriots are on an off week there is a decent chance that I won't be watching Sunday football because - I'm engaged and it's tough for me to convince the First Lady of SPSR Nation that I can't do anything because I need to stay home to watch the Bills/Dolphins game. This week there actually are some interesting games as we get to see how some of the more questionable teams in the league deal with some adversity. I can't believe I'm going to say this but the Cleveland/Pittsburgh game is one of the best games of the week and I'm not even joking about that. On the other end of the spectrum we've got Cincinnati/Baltimore in the Underachievment Bowl. Well I come into the week after going 3-1 last week, and even picked the fourth game right but the Patriots wouldn't help me out with a run up the score field goal to end it - lets see if I can keep that momentum going. As always the home team is in caps.Cleveland (+9.5) over PITTSBURG

Late To The Party
2007-11-08 09:20:00
I feel like I might be the last person on the planet to say this but I finally signed up for Netflix. You'd never know it from this site but I am usually busy on a regular basis and because of that I never get to see movies in the theater that I want to see. Of course the other reason for that is if the First Lady of the Nation went to see movies based on what I wanted to see she'd be watching guys blow stuff up every night of the week and I still haven't lived down bringing her to Smokin' Aces.So I sucked it up and signed up for Netflix this past week because there were so many movies that came and went without me ever seeing them that I figured it would be a good investment. The first movie that I put in my queue was Transformers. I have absolutely no idea why I wanted to see this movie because it was made about ten years to late - but it did look like it had some good action scenes so I figured I'd pop my Netflix cherry with Optimus Prime. If I was going to write a review of Tra

I'm not sure why I still do these picks. I know that nobody reads this site for the picks - they read this site for the baby punching. I also know that I suck at the picks and at this point in the season I have hit the proverbial wall. When I talked to my buddy Nigel (see: Lynchy Right Now) about sports betting because that's what we talk about we both agreed that the build up towards Thanksgiving is the most difficult time for a gambler. I have indeed begun to sag and it's obvious that the completely random XBox generator is kicking my ass with another 3-1 week while I went a paltry 2-2. I will say that it was a pretty satisfying 2-2 as the BC Eagles finally lost a game, and Matt Ryan was exposed after playing 117 terrible minutes of football over two weeks. Hopefully I can bounce back this week but if not we might never talk about college football picks again until next season. Shut Your Mouth

Most of you in the Nation know that I am currently finishing up my last year of law school in the wonderfully cold City of Champions. It's surprising really how many members of Blogfrica attended, are currently attending, or plan on attending law school. However, for those of you who were smart enough not to waste $100,000 and three years of your life I feel as though it is my duty to let you in on one of the most fantastic wastes of flesh and air known to the law school student - the gunner. Now I can't speak for other schools but in my experience there are actually two types of gunners. There is the person who raises their hand whenever a question is asked in hopes that by repeatedly bashing the professor and the entire class over the skull with their superior knowledge and understanding they will somehow improve their incredibly low self worth. This person usually sits dead smack in the center of the front row and wears a suit even though everyone knows he doesn't work. So either

I realize that I've already dubbed this week the Terrible Father Week but it appears that Elderly Starting Pitchers are trying to nose their way into the mix. For those who don't know as of today it is official that the Boston Red Sox will bring Curt Schilling back for one more season at $8 million plus incentives. This is great news for the seven hardcore Republicans in Massachusetts, as well as LARPers all over New England as their hero will stick around, shielding his children from the sun and posting blog entries more often then yours truly over at Epic Carnival. On the other side of the country the Whale's Vagina Fathers gave a one year $10 million deal to 17 time Gold Glove winner Greg Maddux in their febble attempt to revive the spirits of millionaires who lost their homes by singing the praise of 84 mile an hour fastballs. Last week over at Epic Carnival I wrote about how cocaine was having the best week ever. Between Martina Hinges, Eric Clapton, Slash and Britney Spears it seemed like everything cocaine touched turned to gold. Well If those little white lines dominated the final week of October, then the past seven days have been absolutely owned by terrible fathers. At this point I'm sure we're all well informed about the drug emporium that Andy Reid was running out of his home. Unfortunately none of the drugs could make Donovan McNabb become a better quarterback and after Sunday night I was left wondering - is it worse to be Andy Reid's children and stuck in jail with a heroin problem? Or Andy Reid, stuck in Philadelphia with a Donovan McNabb problem? As it turns out Andy Reid isn't the only father in the sports press who is being questioned on parenting prowess. It turns out that hockey legend Guy LaFleur who I believe went on to open a gym and win a dodgeball tournament in Vegas (holy shit that

NASHVILLE (AP) — Lipscomb came within a point of setting the Division I women's record for biggest winning margin with a 123-22 rout of Fisk on Tuesday night. With the 101-point victory, the Lady Bisons were a point short of the mark set by Grambling against Jarvis Christian on Feb. 12, 1986. Valerie Bronson scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Lady Bisons (1-2), who shot 57% from the field. Cree Nix added 14.This story has so much to love I'm not even sure where to start. First off the Kentucky men's basketball team better hope they haven't scheduled Lipscomb this season because they'll probably lose to them. How do you give up 123 points in a women's basketball game? There are women's basketball teams in this country who won't score 123 points all season, and this Lipscomb team did it in one game? If the Fisk coach isn't immediately fired, and then executed on the campus common then the world has officially become pussified. Also how about the leading scorer

This Bugs Me For No Reason
2007-11-13 11:40:00
It's been a slow day here in SPSR land and I have no real reason for it other then I'm a lazy waste of space who couldn't think of anything to write. However, as I was listening to WEEI while eating my lunch one of the things that I can't stand came up as the hosts were talking about going to see The Police in concert a few days ago. Of course the fact that someone would actually pay to see The Police in concert wasn't what bothered me (though it should have), what bugs the shit out of me is when the host says that as a encore The Police played "I'll Be Watching You." I should admit that I'm not sure that's the name of the song as I don't care for The Police, but you know what song I'm talking about so if you're thinking of emailing me the correct title of the song why don't you go sit in your garage with the door closed and car running instead.I don't care that Sting thought everyone wanted to go home on a slow, low note because frankly if you're going to see The Police

Not Everyone Is Happy For Cromartie
2007-11-12 07:40:00
The first half of Sunday nights Colts/Chargers game was not what anyone expected. Peyton Manning just doesn't throw 4 interceptions in one half, like ever. Well I guess that's not totally true, he did it once before against the San Francisco 49ers and that game has lived on in infamy not because of Peyton's crappy performance but because of Jim Mora's Oscar worthy "PLAYOFFS?" speech that followed that shit show. However, for the second week in a row Antonio Cromartie has done something of note - last week it was the 108 yard longest touchdown ever, and this week it was the first time one player has had 3 interceptions in one half since 1995. Of course it's a huge moment for the Cromartie family, but not everyone is celebrating this evening as immediately following Antonio's third pick I received an email from Stevon Moore. My instinct was that Stevon Moore was going to tell me how by transferring a few hundred dollars into his off shore banking account he would give me 95% of his

What Is Going On?
2007-11-19 12:25:00
By now everyone has probably seen the video of Cleveland Browns kicker Phil Dawson hitting a 51 yard field goal at the end of regulation against the Baltimore Ravens yesterday afternoon and the insanity that followed the kick. While the obvious highlight of the moment was brought to us by the CBS Crew not talking and just watching the Ravens/Browns game which they could not actually show on CBS and explaining to the audience what was happening - the thing that people should focus on is how once again inept officials are causing a black eye to the NFL. Think about this: first the two officials who sole job during a field goal is to make sure the football clears the uprights get the call wrong. Remember that they're both standing directly beneath the goal posts and the only reason that they receive a paycheck is because they are supposed to make sure whether or not a field goal is good. At least one of the two got the call completely wrong and in the post debacle coverup one of the offi

I've got to ask any Yankee fans out there in the Nation how you feel about this entire episode? On the one hand you're bringing back potentially the best regular season player in all of baseball. Florida Strikes Again

BRANDON -- Hillsborough sheriff's officials found no evidence of a kangaroo on the loose. Deputies were tracking a report of a kangaroo bouncing through the suburbs of east Hillsborough after someone phoned in a report of seeing the animal running through traffic at Bloomingdale Avenue and Watson Road about 5:30 p.m., officials said.So here is the thing - I love Florida . I spent some time living down there with the First Lady of SPSR Nation during the summer, some of my favorite future brothers live down there, and all in all I think it's a pretty great place. However, they're really not doing themselves any favors by calling the police on kangaroos. There is a reason that Florida has a reputation for being full of inbred waterheads and I think it starts and ends with calling in kangaroo threats. I want to love Florida unconditionally but they keep doing things to make me realize that it's possibly the worst place in the world so Nation if you're reading this from Florida please f

Michigan Is In Trouble
2007-11-15 08:00:00
School spirit is one of the best aspects of college sports. In college football there is nothing as powerful for a home team then a hundred thousand crazed students who start drinking Thursday night so that by Saturday afternoon they're so black out drunk that all they want to do is spin a colored towel to keep themselves from falling off the face of the planet. Ohio State and Michigan have one of, if not the best rivalry in college football. They're always playing for something, the two schools legitimately hate one another, the coaches don't like each other, the players don't, basically there is nothing about either school that the other would support. It's the epitome of a great college rivalry and every fiber of my being wants to pick Michigan (+4.5) at home this weekend but I won't.You see in thinking about this piece I wanted some pictures to show how rabid the fans of both schools are. When you do a search for crazy potentially coked out girls from Ohio State who hate the
