Google goes to Black
2007-10-20 12:37:00
On Saturday, October 20, 2007, San Francisco will go black for one hour (8pm-9pm PST) as it participates in “Lights Out San Francisco”. In addition, the citizens of SF are encouraged to install at least one compact fluorexcent light bulb to help reduce their energy consumption. In a show of their support, Google has changed the background of their page to black. This page is targeted at San Francisco users, since this is a local thing, so chances are you are seeing the normal Google page if you aren’t using an internet connection that traces back to San Francisco. This isn’t to say that you can’t join in and turn out your lights from 8pm-9pm. If you’re visiting Google.com from San Francisco today, you might see it showing a black background color with the text “We’ve turned the lights out. Now it’s your turn.” And if you want a permanently dark search homepage, you can boomark Black le.com, though Google says a black background color doesn’t actually save energy...

How Google Blogs
2007-10-18 12:05:00
When Google launched the Official Google Blog back in 2004, it started as sort of a ho-hum event. There wasn't anything particularly gripping, and some wondered if the company should be more edgy with its posts. Since then, Google has launched more than 70 additional official blogs over the years. Some have gotten edgy; a few even have comments, but most important, they've turned into an essential communications vehicle for the company.Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land interviewed Karen Wickre, “mother of Google’s blogs”, on her work as editor & “gatekeeper” of the official Google blogs.Danny: How would you characterize your role in relation to the blogs? Karen: I shepherd them. I call myself the managing editor, and I'm the gatekeeper for the new blogs. I've been with Google a long time and have worked in publishing a long time, so I can't help but pay attention to the words -- to the ways in which Google is communicating with the world. Danny:

orkut up to 50 Photos in your album
2007-10-17 10:58:00
Today Google announced that they expanded the orkut album size from 25 to 50 pictures as Natalie Schwartz, Associate Product Marketing Manager, said on orkut blog:Several weeks ago, we announced that we'd expanded the orkut album size to 25 pictures. And last week, we quietly launched double the space: now you can have up to 50 photos in your orkut album! Not many of you have caught on to this yet, so we thought we'd let you know here. For now, that's it, twice as much space for you to share more pics of your family, friends, travels, or whatever else you like! And, more photos makes browsing orkut even more fun. If you love taking photos like me, though, 50 covers about the past month's worth, so we'll continue to add photo space to accommodate even the extreme photo buff.

2007-10-16 12:28:00
Google Analytics (GA) is a free service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website. Its main highlight is that a webmaster can optimize his/her AdWords advertisement and marketing campaigns through the use of GA's analysis of where the visitors came from, how long they stayed on the website and their geographical position.Users can define and track conversions, or goals. Goals might include sales, lead generation, viewing a specific page, or downloading a particular file. By using this tool, marketers can determine which ads are performing, and which are not, as well as find unexpected sources of quality visitors.Google's service was modeled upon Urchin Software Corporation's analytics system, Urchin on Demand (Google acquired Urchin Software Corp. in April 2005).
