Wait what? Why do I see ads on Beyond Teck?
2007-10-14 20:28:00
Do you see ads on Beyond Teck? Yeah, I see them too.. because I put them there. Why? Because I felt like it!Okay, not really. There are ads placed on the blog for a reason. A really big reason. The truth is that I'm trying to experiment and find out more about human psychology. Yeah, you read that stuff right. I'm currently performing an experiment on online advertising. Why do an experiment on online advertising out of all other things I could be studying?Google, the search engine giant, makes billions of dollars every year. Why? Because of Adsense. Surely, there must be a reason why online advertising is so successful. And there must also be a reason why some people can make a living off of advertising on the internet. So, I decided to find out more about why people click, when do they click and if they will ever stop clicking in the future. This will give me an idea on why the internet as a whose is so successful, which I can then write a meaningful post (or perhaps even a e-book or

Adobe CS3 screensaver for Mac and Windows Download
2007-10-06 19:10:00
Ever wanted to know how Steve Jobs felt like when he was on acid? Well, now you can! It's called the Adobe CS3 Screensaver. I call it virtual LSD. No kidding. Okay, fine, I admit that the screensaver really does look good and I'm sure you'll agree too. It might be a bit abstract for some peoples' tastes, but I seem to like it anyway. You might want to keep in mind that if you computer is slow, it might not run the screensaver as well as a fast computer would. Also, you'll be needing QuickTime (yikes!) to run the screensaver. Quite memory intensive indeed. So without further ado, here are the download links to the Adobe CS3 wallpaper. Download the CS3 screensaver for Windows (about 10.1 MB) Download the CS3 screensaver for the Mac (about 10.6 MB) Oh and by the way if you are on Windows (if you are on a mac, you most likely won't have to worry about this) and want to use the screensaver, you'll have to first ensure that QuickTime can play flash tracks. Here's how to do that: Cli

Get free MSN messenger Emoticon Smiley Packs
2007-10-04 00:21:00
If you tend to use Windows Live Messenger (you might also refer to this by the name MSN messenger, or simply call it MSN), then I'm sure you'd love to add more emoticons to your collection (Psst.. if you don't already have a emoticon collection you can steal emoticons from others when they use custom emoticons). I believe these emoticons used to be paid, but then Microsoft realized that no one was buying them, and finally decided to make them free.Getting the emoticons itself is pretty straight forward. All you need to do is head over to Free Messenger Emoticons site (notice how the url is .ca - this is because most of the people who use MSN/Live Messenger are Canadian, I think. I'm pretty sure everyone uses AIM in the states). Of course, you need to have the latest version of Windows Live Messenger installed in order to use the emoticons, so if you don't already have it installed then you can download it here. There is also another free way of getting free emoticon packs along w

How to find out if someone is stealing your content
2007-09-27 18:40:00
Have you ever wondered if someone is stealing all your posts and other content that you've published on the internet? Well, this post is all about finding out if someone is copying and pasting your content word for word. Plagiarism is not a great thing for your website because you might be loosing a lot of visitors and or revenue when someone else who has a higher pagerank/gets more visitors steals your content and posts it on their website. Even worse, someone else might be making money from the content that you worked hard to write and publish. Here are a couple of tips on how to find the content stealing culprits!Use Copyscape. Copyscape is a great little tool that auto-magically searches for content similiar to that of your website on other websites. All you need to do is mention the url of the website, after which copyscape will search the web for similar articles. The only downside to this method is that if someone has rephrased some of the words in the article, copyscape might no

How to find out if a .exe process is spyware or virus
2007-09-22 19:27:00
Windows XP has thousands and thousands of .exe files, and usually a lot of those executables are running at any given time. But are all of those .exe files legit or are they spyware/malware/virus es that are bad for your computer... I recommend you follow these instructionsFirst get the usual spyware finding stuff (if you don't have it already - DOWNLOAD IT!) like:Spybot Search and DestroyAdAware (the free version works fine...)Windows DefenderAny one or more (more = better) of the programs listed below should be downloaded and run in order to search for any viruses. If the programs above find something then bingo! You've found the culprit! If not you'll have to do more digging....Download Process Explorer from Microsoft's website and unzip the stuff and open up procexp.exe. There look for the .EXE file that you had your doubts about and click on the entry corresponding that bears the name of the executable. If you don't know what that entry means just right click on it and click o

Follow cricket scores online for free
2007-09-22 14:20:00
Here's a tip for all my brown buddies out there with a slower internet connection. It's not as exiting as watching free cricket online , but its just as good to be able to follow the scores online. It's pretty simple actually. Whenever a cricket game is going on, all you need to do is head on over to http://www.cricinfo.com/ and then just click the live scorecard link under the title of the game.TipIf you want to a quick way to find out scores, just type cricket [name of the team] into Google. Of course, you'll have to replace '[name of team]' with the name of the team you want to follow. Example: cricket India. This will show you the score of the latest game india played. For every live game that's going, it's going to show a link where you can access the live scorecard. Simply click on that link and the scorecard should open up.By default it just shows a basic scorecard. I on the other hand prefer the full score card, so too might want to click on the full scorecard link in ord

How to watch cricket online for free
2007-09-22 13:48:00
I have a confession to make - I'm addicted to cricket. I pretty much can't live without watch ing cricket matches (especially if India and/or Pakistan is playing). So if you are wondering how you can watch cricket online for free, here's how you can watch LIVE online cricket. All you need is a passion for cricket, a internet connection (hi-speed preferably) and of course a computer that can handle live streaming video. (Note: If you don't have a high speed connection or a powerful connection - you might want to just stick to watching cricket scores online.. which is almost as exiting...)Step 1Download SopCast from SopCast.org. You'll most likely need this because it is necessary for most live broadcasting stuff. It works in the P2P style of bittorrent, so as you're downloading, you're also sharing it to others.Step 2Open IE (yes you'll need IE for getting some Active X controls) and go to a website that has sopcast embedded players in it. Here are some of them if you don't kno

An update to Adobe Shockwave Player is available?
2007-09-16 10:38:00
Ok, seriously, I thought Adobe was the creator of Photoshop right? Then what's up with the ugly "update your shockwave player" screens? Seriously though, at first I was reluctant to even click on the install button fearing that it was some kind of evil malicious spyware thing that might infect my already pre-infected Windows machine.Anyway, I just went ahead and clicked on the install link anyway, and turns out it is the real deal, no spyware here. Still, I think adobe should update their ways of updating, and stop scaring people like this with ugly screens.Oh and if anyone is wondering about the install.. it goes something like this:Internet Explorer asks you if you want to install an ActiveX control. I click install...Then it asks you for which language you want.. I choose English US..Then it asks if I want to install google reader.. I say what the flip, is evil google really trying to take over the world, and I uncheck the box and move on..Then it says RESTART YOUR COMPUTER? What?O

5 ways to speed up and improve your wireless network for free
2007-09-15 16:12:00
First off I need to mention that I live in an apartment complex, and getting wireless to work properly is extremely hard, and I guess I can say that I've learnt a lot form tweaking it so much. Recently I read a similar article on Microsoft's website, but most of the stuff in there is impractical. All they seem to say is upgrade all your devices and buy more stuff. So here are 5 tips that are guaranteed to make your wireless connection work better for free. These "tweaks" can be performed in most settings and it shouldn't be a much of a problem to implement in your home or even office network .Find the right channel for your router. First make sure that you don't have any cordless phone in your own house that might be causing interference. If you find that your wireless connection gets weaker whenever you get a call, try changing the channel on your cordless phone. Then download net stumbler on one of your computers with a wireless card (it should work with most cards). Open it and c

Why does Google AdSense show public service ads?
2007-09-15 15:04:00
Ok, so its only been a week so far and I've already had some experience with the way adsense works. Oh, and did I mention, I've discovered several AdSense NO-NOs. Oh and I also figured out when and why google displays public service ads. I figured that Google will usually display public service ads in one of the following scenarios:Your publisher ID is wrong or improper. Or perhaps you did not comply to the google TOS.You tried to modify the adsense code and accidently screw it up.Google can't find any ads to match the content in the page. You did not put the code in the template, and put it in a post instead - The thing that you should keep in mind is always have the adsense in your TEMPLATE ONLY. Don't try and put any adsense code into your posts, because it will not work. Instead you'll just get a ugly ad like the one shown below. Why? because once you post the code through most CMS systems the code will not stay in different lines (the linebrakes between the code will be remove

Stop Internet Explorer from crashing
2007-09-14 16:13:00
If you've ever experienced IE crashing .. you know its not a good thing. Here's how you can stop the famous Internet Explorer from crashing over and over..If you have the latest version of IE and know that you shouldn’t be using IE all the time, please skip to the How to fix Internet Explorer section I apologize for the stuff about Firefox that you might already know…First off, you really shouldn’t be using Internet Explorer 6 or even 7 a lot. Why you ask? Because it is less secure, slower and outdated, especially if you’re using the older version of Internet Explorer, IE Version 6.I highly recommend you get Firefox... because its better go check it out!Use it as your primary browser and only use IE 7 (that’s the latest version) only when needed. However, sometimes you might need to use Internet Explorer for things such as Microsoft Updates. If you window looks like the picture below. Don’t even bother reading the article… unless you upgrade to Firefox first because it

Beyond Teck - Version 3.14159
2007-08-31 23:39:00
With a handful of ideas in my OneNote document (testing out OneNote 07 at the moment) and voice recognition (DNS 9 is absolutely amazing!) by my side, I think it’s about time I start writing again - just like I used to before. This time I'm going to make it a point to blog every other day or so about something interesting, and keep the whole world updated about my tech endeavors and write way more often. Why am I motivated and confident more than I was last time, you ask? Because I know a lot more than I did before and I seemed to have acquired the right tools for the job. Also, this summer has taught me that there are a lot of people in this world who really need a lot of help with computers and technology in general. Teaching people about Microsoft Word at my local community center was an eye opening experience and I learned that stuff I thought were really intuitive and easy to use were not so for many people new to computers. I guess there are a lot of people out there who reall

Someone at Microsoft is smart
2007-07-01 10:29:00
It's highly unusual that I praise people at Microsoft , but using Windows Live Writer for a while has changed my thinking considerably. I realize that Microsoft is a company and not one person that is working, and at first I believed them to be complete idiots, but it seems as though I'm wrong. Someone over there actually has some brains, and its a good thing they worked on the Windows Live Writer division at Redmond. To be honest I couldn't care much for the ribbon interface that the new Office 07 has, it is merely a selling point for the majority of the people who don't realize that its the same Office 2003, except it has a more shiny appearance, which deceives people into thinking it it's a entirely different product altogether. But Windows Live Writer is what really caught my attention. It is the first time Microsoft actually has a useful tool, that is very similar to its paid rival ecto and many other similar blogging applications. Surprisingly, Microsoft has caught on to the

I think I forgot how to blog!
2007-06-28 15:43:00
Wow, I think it's been so long since I last blogged something I'm pretty sure I forgot how to blog... ok not quite but something to that effect. But fear not my friends, I'm back. And this time I've got a few tools to help me out. So yes, I'm using Windows Live Writer to write this blog post, and to be honest I like it. Finally a product from the 'Windows Live' series of applications that I really seem to like. I'm really sure that this is going to help me write more articles and make me uber productive. Anyway, exams are done and I'm free to do anything I want. Ok, I still have summer school and a couple of workshops to teach, but I'm still a free man. Stay tuned.. this time I assure you that I'm going to start blogging again.. I hope.. no really I do..

Common rules every website author must follow
2007-05-07 20:57:00
Ok so I posted a screen shot of the fascinating Google layout on a post a couple of days ago. Funny thing, it actually got on Techcrunch. Well, whats interesting is, why? It even got on Digg too. All for a layout... what is this world coming to. But the part that confuses me the most is they pretty much copy my post, get all the attention and then just put a link back to me. What happened to the policy of asking the author first about "using their screen shots for monetary purposes". Just because you found it on my blog it doesn't mean you get to copy it. It's public domain yes, but still, I find it just wrong for tech crunch to do that. I didn't even get a e-mail from tech crunch that they had "stolen my screen shots and topic". It wasn't until Parm from Techfare told me about it, that I realized it was "featured" on TechCrunch. Please techcrunch guys, inform me before you take my content. Oh and next time, if you are wondering if I photoshopped something don't hesitate to ask, I

Google got updated?
2007-05-05 22:19:00
Update: Ok.. not really an update by as such, but apparently it is a new feature added by the web search history feature, although I believe that you might have gotten this screen yesterday if you were logged in when you performed your searches. Hmm.. I seem to like it this way, though. Is it just me or does Google have a new and better search page now? Hmm.. not sure.. perhaps my eyes are deceiving me? Anyways I like this new style.. and the gradient seems like one step forward for Google, in terms of design. Interesting.Oh and those who believe that I've probably photoshopped used Adobe Photoshop® software to digitally enhance the screen shot, you can take a look at the gradient image stored on the Google servers (or you can see a screen shot of the gradient image when viewed through Firefox incase Google decides to get rid of it). This should be enough proof that I did not create it.

Trying my hand at podcasting
2007-04-14 23:54:00
I always wanted to be a DJ. No, really I did... but then again I always wanted to become a garbage collector because I thought they used to work for only one day in a week. So I think I'm going to try my hand at podcasting and see how it goes. I'm not a professional nor do I have all the equipment, but hey one had to start somewhere. Perhaps if the beyond teck podcacst is really awesome I might invest more time into getting better gear so that I can talk about more tutorials. As for the topic I'm thinking talking about tips and tutorials more than taking about news and my take on things. I think everyone has their own opinion and listening to someone else's opinion is just a waste of time. So I'm not going to waste your time I'm just going to try and make you more smarter. I wont vent about things like David Pogue does.. I promise.Does this sound good or what?

Technology Should be Simple!
2007-02-24 17:25:00
Simple OS- My idea for creating an OS for users who don't really know what GUI means. Obviously, this is just an idea but what do you think of it? Thanks imacadam to for creating MYiPhone (icons used in this "mock-up OS").As technology progresses in leaps and bounds, I honestly think that its making our life kinda harder. Now, I know that you are probably saying to yourself, what is this kid thinking of, but honestly I think its becoming more complex. Any application that exists today has so many tabs and menus and what not that it can be intimidating to use it at times.Take Firefox for example, the browser that I'm blogging in right now. Now, pretend for a minute that you don't know a thing about computers. You don't know what CPU is, you don't know what a LCD display is for that matter. Then go open up a browser, I'm going to use firefox for example. Would you happen to know what a bookmark is? Would you know how to change the options and settings? Are you going to bother to cl

CiteHelper is here to help you cite your sources
2007-02-10 17:45:00
How many times have you heard your teachers yell, "Cite your sources or D-!!"? Yeah, I know, it's pretty boring when you use like a bazillion sources and don't know how to source your stuff. I kinda have the same problem sometimes, and that's why I created CiteHelper. It's a simple application (just a regular .exe file.. nothing to install or anything like that) that helps you cite your sources.I kinda got the idea from CitationMachine.net where you put in the url of the webpage that you got your ideas/facts from and it spits out the proper MLA/APA/Whatever format code. But the benefits or using an application is - it's faster to load. Plus I find it boring to go on the internet to source something everytime I need to do so (which is quite often, believe it or not).Unfortunately, CiteHelper is still under development, and it's going to be a while before its ready for crunch time. Right now I'm at the "getting the application to process the given information stage". So right afte

Wow! Its been a super hectic week
2007-01-31 23:11:00
Its been so busy for me lately that I almost forgot I even had a blog. Alas, all the non exam necessary stuff is coming back to me now, slowly and steadily. I've also gotta start working on my other projects, such as vista-news.com. Wow, I've neglected soo much stuff over the past few months. At least this semester I had only 2 exams, next semester its going to be 4... yikes! Luckily I have a bit more interesting subjects like computer engineering. Well, I'm not sure how interesting it really is, but we'll see how things turn out. Oh and I'll be doing some Java coding, so watch out for some fun-filled downloads over the course of the next few weeks. Oh and if there are any of you interested in writing about Vista then make sure to apply. Who knows, you could be the next new writing sensation :D . Speaking of Vista.. I'm pretty sure that not all of you have vista yet. So make sure you go check out my article on how to Make XP look like vista, which is going to be updat

Have to start blogging again!
2006-12-16 21:28:00
Wow, I can't believe that people still read this blog. I guess Google is still playing an important role in it. It looks the "Firefox- Blinking Cursor Problem" is one of the most active posts around this blog. And when people say they love me (even if they don't know who I am) and are going to read my blog everyday, then.. well.. I have to start blogging again I guess.I really don't get time to blog, mainly due to school and what not. But hey, I can seriously give it a try this time. I guess I also have to start being a regular at tech-recieps and syschat again. I'm pretty sure they miss me a lot. I really have to redesign this blog as well. I think that blogger should provide better blogger beta templates with better labeling ang all that. But I guess I'll have to work around that for now.Oh and if any of you have any problems or anything like that (in terms of technology problems...) then feel free to drop me a mail and I'll see what I can do. These can be any sort tech of prob

Go Google Go!
2006-11-25 12:10:00
Wow, Its been like 5 months or something since I last blogged anything. I'm trying to set aside sometime to blog everyday and visit web-sites like tech-recipes.com and syschat.com and all that, but its getting harder every day. But, recently I've been getting so many comments about articles that I wrote a long time ago. For example the blank e-mail in Outlook problem. And the Firefox blinking cursor problem and the Ipod shuffle problem. Its totally crazy to know that Beyond Tecknology is still very much alive sort of anyways.Along with that I recently updated to blogger 2.0 and due to that I have some problems now. Basically before my blog had links to all kinds of feeds and what not, as well as about 500 comments on haloscan (I preferred haloscan since it gave me more control) but I figured that people comment more when you use blogger commenting. So yeah, I guess I need to provide links for 'Old Comments' as well as 'New Comments' at the same time. Phew. And along with that I ne

Finally found some time to blog
2006-10-09 02:55:00
The past few days have been an interesting mix of extremly hard work and a lot of hard work. On one hand I had a lot of fun at school (well.. not really since its school, but hey it was kind of fun). I finally couldn't resist blogging a little bit. I mean I've maintained this blog for a whole year, and why just stop right now? It kinda hurts... deep inside when you see your blog just sitting there, like a ghost town completely useless (except for the few iPod posts that constantly get read). So yeah, I guess I'll try to blog a little bit when I get the time. It's fun, plus I need to keep in touch with blogger technology. I'm also planning to switch to Blogger 2.0 sometime soon. And I'll probably write articles on how to do that properly as well.Anyways, that's it for now. Even if nobody reads this stuff, I know I will, and like Franklin McMahon says, I can keep my record for my progress.

What's hapennin' lately?
2006-08-20 18:18:00
If your wondering what's hapenning lately (if you are wondering though... seriously, get a life, I'm quite sure you have lot more things to do then read a blog that get's one post in a week (hopefully) and has really big run-on sentences (like this one) in it) then you've really come to the right place.Anyways, apparently there's a lot of stuff going on in the web (as well as the web 2.0) world lately. Like blogger recently upgraded to a much more btter web-2.0 ish style type platform. But honestly though, if you do use blogger, then more web 2.0 stuff is the last thing you care about (unless you are somebody like Amit Agarwal who earns about 20,000 dollars per month (yes that's right there are 4 zeros in the number... it's not a mistake!)). I've yet to switch to the new type (if it is possible) but right now I have my hands a bit to tied with work right now. May be sometime in the future.By the way does anyone still read this blog? I see 12 people subscribing to the blog but I

I love my new MacBook Pro!
2007-10-22 17:33:00
My God. I'm speechless. All these days, I've been using a (windows) computer that can't do half of the things a computer in this age and time is supposed to do. Thankfully, the uber awesome guys over at tech-recipes.com decided to send over (there's no way I would have been able to afford such an expensive computer) a MacBook Pro, so that I could play around with Leopard (well I'm running OS X Tiger right now, but it shouldn't be too long before I get my grubby hands on leopard and drool all over the 'gorgeous new user interface')and edit movies (gotta love FCP and Shake) and what not. I think this fabulous laptop should be able to handle it all. I've only had this for less than a week now, and I've already fallen in love with it. It's too soon to 'review' this laptop, but I'm sure that it's going to get a really high rating from me anyway.First off, the simple Apple logo on the top of the laptop says a lot about it. It's really simple and totally sophisticated at the

Fullscreen in Firefox on Mac OS X
2007-12-02 09:37:00
Mac: Hi, I'm a Mac. I look cool and interesting.PC: And I'm a PC. I look ugly and boring.Mac: Dude. You're so boring.PC: I sure am.Mac: I rock.PC: Ya sure do.- Some Apple commercial where Apple makes fun of "personal computers".Yup. The Apple commercials sure are right. There is huge different between the Mac and PC lifestyles. I've been a switcher recently. And one big problem that I ran into recently is that a lot of things on the PC side aren't quite available to the Mac users.Usually, when I'm on the PC, I hit F11 and Firefox goes into full screen mode. However, when I'm on Tiger or Leopard for that matter, hitting F11 will only show you your desktop. You can change that however through system preferences, but there's no way of going fullscreen on a mac :(. For other cocoa applications, Ian Henderson created a really lightweight and useful app/plug-in called megazoomer, but Firefox isn't exactly a cocoa application. So, after searching the inter web for a while, I came ac

How to export Firefox Bookmarks to Del.icio.us
2007-12-02 00:23:00
Del.icio.us! Ever heard of it? If your answer is no, then I highly recommend to take a look at del.ico.us. It's a really cool website where you can store your bookmarks online, and then access it from anywhere. But the best part is that you can tag them and make them public so the rest of the world can see what you're really into. This post is all about how to export Firefox bookmarks into delicious, so that you can access them from anywhere. And if you're anything like me then you probably have a lot of bookmarks in Firefox, so you might want to back them up first. The easiest way is to use the del.icio.us plugin. Once you install it just go to del.icio.us in the menubar > del.icio.us website > import bookmarks. You will have to be logged in to do this step.If you don't wan to use he plug-in it is possible to upload the bookmarks that you have in Firefox manually as well.Once you are done backing up your Firefox bookmarks, you are ready to export them into a HTML file. Back up Firefox and Internet Explorer bookmarks and settings
2007-12-01 23:28:00
The highly digital lifestyle that we live in today requires us to constantly back-up, update and maintain our computers. One of the most important applications that we use today is a web browser. And backing up the data in it is just as essential as backing up the files in your computer. It's impossible to know when disaster is going to strike and the next crash is going to happen. Here are a couple of ways you can back up your web browser of choice. How to back-up Firefox bookmarks, profiles, extensions etc.If you use Firefox as your main browser, and I highly recommend that you do, and you're on Windows, the tool you'll most likely want to use is called MozBackup. It's a nifty little tool that backs up all your settings, profiles, history and bookmarks. It even allows you to back up your cache and cookies. Very handy if you ask me. You can download it here.If you're on a mac, you're kinda going to have to do a bit more work. First, you're going to want to download the firefox en

Firefox Version 2.0.0.11?
2007-12-01 22:49:00
Am I the only one noticing the fact that Firefox version 2.0.0.10 was just released a couple of days ago? Or is every Firefox lover out there wondering if the Mozilla team screwed up something, or is just working overtime. Now, first off, I must mention that I am a Firefox lover. I absolutely can't do without the really cool add-ons and features this amazing browser has. But why would someone release updates so quick? My first thought was that it was some kind of wierd virus/malware thing. However, Macs don't have viruses! Silly Me.After thinking for a while, I've came to the conclusion that it was probably for a couple of reasons why the back-to-back updates were released. Some one in the Mozilla Team screwed up some code so they had to fix itA really really big security bug was discoveredThey wanted to introduced some new features (I didn't see anything new though)The FireFox team was bored to death and decided to release something newSome one noticed a bug in FireFoxTurns out, th
