2007-12-21 09:15:00 I've noticed a trend lately. People are visiting my blog -- not to read anything I have to say, mind you - it's all because of an entry I posted about Logan's Calf a month ago. Fifty-five percent of my traffic is from that and the other forty-five is all about the sweets - and as Megan likes to say, I'm "bringing the haystack back" because it's my second most searched item. I'm all about revival, folks.I have one more little recipe to share with you before the brouhaha at my mother-in-law's house Christmas eve. It's something from my childhood...much like the haystacks. I like to have a handful of this while I vigorously clean the house from top to bottom sit on the couch and watch movies with my kids while we are out of school this week. I also like to have a cup nearby while I'm goofing off on the internet researching important topics and analyzing my blog statistics. It doesn't hurt to have a cup of it when I leave the house to finish my last minute Christmas shopping go t
$MART = Save money and reduce tension 2007-12-21 01:10:00 A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about. For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got sick and the doctor said she might not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000.He asked her about the contents. "When we were to be married," she said, " my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told methat if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll."The little old man was so moved; he had to fight Read more:reduce
An Update and a Thank You 2008-03-06 08:04:53 Mom's appointment for her MRI was a huge DISappointment, as we found out she could not have one. She has a tens unit implant from several years ago in her back for relieving her back pain, and because of that, they were unable to do an MRI. The nurse said that her back would fry in that spot, so wisely, we elected not to go through with it. Instead, her Dr. was called and she ordered a CT scan of mom's brain. We should know the results sometime on Monday. Last night, mom was doing much better - she was still tired, but she had no memory of yesterday morning's events. She is of course, frightened and concerned that she's having mini-strokes. She does not want to end up like her sister, who was incapable of caring for herself for the last seven of eight years of her life and had to end up sta Read more:Update

Please pray for my mom 2008-03-05 11:51:45 She went to the cardiologist this morning at 9 and everything checked out fine - no additional blockage in her carotid, which means no surgery is necessary.HOWEVER...while there, she had what I can only describe as an "episode". She was almost catatonic and was having trouble responding to anything. Her oxygen levels are very low, so they suggested that we take her home and put her on oxygen. We called her regular Dr as soon as we got home and she had us run through some things with mom and she failed every one of them. Soo...the long and short of it is that we are taking her in in 45 minutes for an MRI to see if she's had some sort of seizure or mini-strokes and to try and find out what is going on with her. One day, she acts totally normal and fine and lucid, then the next she is like th Read more:Please
Me? Clip Coupons? 2008-03-05 00:57:08 This is a question for all of you folks in the coupon clipping club out there, of which I am unfortunately not a member of. I have never had any success with clipping coupons - do you have any pointers for me? Websites I can go to ? I do not like purchasing un-needed items just because I can get a deal. To me, that's a waste of money...stocking up is one thing, but buying 4 cans of shaving cream so I can get two free is not saving money in my book. But mainly because I don't use shaving cream. Catch my drift? I'm talking about seriously saving money on my grocery bill (ie - food, personal items, etc) I'd love to hear from you - I know there are some mighty thrifty women out there and I have it from reliable sources that some of you even get money back. Tell me how this is possible. And how Read more:Coupons

Eleven 2008-03-04 11:07:59 Dear K, Today is the eleventh anniversary of an event that has done more to shape and mold me into a better human than almost anything else in my life has done. With the exception of the day I asked Jesus to be Lord of my life, the birth of my you, my daughter, will remain one of the most memorable and life-changing occasions I have ever experienced.I am thankful for the blessings and challenges that being your mom means. Today is your special day and we are taking the day off of school to do whatever you want. When you handed me your list last night with a few things you wanted to do on your birthday, aside from our old standbys (no school and baking), I was surprised. You wanted cinnamon toast for breakfast and to go to the library so you can find some more books in the series you are re Read more:Eleven
There's nothing more valuable than knowledge... 2008-03-03 19:48:52 Sometimes I like to analyze my keyword stats so I know how people are finding my blog, sometimes I wish I hadn't looked.Tonight, I saw thirteen visits from someone today looking for a blog about the beauty of circumcisi*n. Thirteen. I don't think they found what they were looking for, since they kept coming back, obviously still, you know - searching...and I don't know that it was my witty reparte that was keeping them entertained. *Shudder* Is there anything beautiful about that particular procedure? Someone want to enlighten me here? Now I DO hope that the lady in New Mexico that was looking for a crock pot breakfast recipe will try this one. Because it's really good. And no, my stats didn't tell me it was a woman...common sense did. Do you know any men that use crockpots? Or search for b
Who's the Captain of My Ship? 2008-03-03 06:44:08 Have you ever navigated a boat?I spent a large portion of my growing up years in Alaska where my step-dad had a 42-foot fishing boat. The Maple Leaf had been purchased from a friend in Gig Harbor, Washington in the late ‘70s, where she had been sunk in a fierce storm right in the safety of the boat harbor, tied up to the dock in her slip, of all places. My step dad had her shipped to him in Homer, a small fishing and tourist town on the South Kenai Peninsula, when he retired from his state job. He spent a couple of years completely renovating her, inside and out, and placed her in the Homer boat harbor when she was finally seaworthy. She left the waters only during the winter months, when the fishing wasn’t good.I spent every summer on that boat from the time I was 12 until I turned 18 Read more:Captain
I must be coming down with something... 2008-03-01 14:51:43 I have been on a cleaning frenzy today. I cleaned out my pantry and dish cupboard and wiped everything down, sorted through, threw old and mismatched stuff out. Whatever this is that I've contracted has bitten me pretty severely, because I'm even considering moving my fridge and cleaning under and behind it, along with my washer and dryer. Must the be 73 degree weather. My windows are open, the lilies are blooming, my yard is covered with a bed of clover, needing to be mowed. It's starting. Summer is right around the corner and I don't feel ready. (Not that you have to be "ready" for summer to arrive, mind you.) There are so many things that need to be done around my house that I've lost count and my poor husband's "honey-do" list is seemingly endless. I'd better be getting back to it. Your Tastebuds Will Thank Me. 2008-02-29 10:51:47 They may not look like much - two little sandwiches on a 10 year old plate, but they taste divine and if you make them, I promise your tastebuds will thank me. I recently made these for our monthly Church Fellowship (two huge pans) and wouldn't you know it? Not one was left. Everyone commented on how delicious they were and wanted the recipe. What's so special about them? I can't really figure that one out myself. You decide - here's the recipe for you to try, if you are so inclined:Buttery Sandwich Rolls~1 lb thinly sliced deli meat (I used turkey, ham and roast beef)~12 thin slices of medium cheddar cheese (or provolone - something mild)~1 pkg Hawaiian rolls~1 stick real salted butter~1 T garlic powder (or more to taste - we use more)~1 t poppy seedsPreheat oven to 250 degrees.Slice Hawa Read more:Thank

The Post That Wasn't Meant to Be... 2008-02-27 21:25:52 Mistakes are bound to happen. Especially when you're me. I had good intentions, I really did. I planned on making a fantastic celebration of my 500th post, but when I went to my draft folder this morning, I realized it was Wednesday and posted my Wordless Wednesday photo as the “big” one. Post number 500. Yesiree, I did.You might think that a photo of a dead armadillo is all I have to offer you. But you’d be oh so wrong.I planned on giving you the recipe for these delightful little sandwiches I recently made for our church's monthly birthday fellowship (they were all the rage and not one was left):I was going to show you the fort my kids have made in my dining room...aka the "schoolroom"...if you guessed there's more playing going on today than learning, you might just be right..
So you say it's your birthday...na na na na na naaah 2008-02-27 10:27:48 My oldest daughter will be eleven on March 4th and I'm having a really tough time deciding what to get her for her birthday. She loves music and art, so the world is my oyster (so to speak) when it comes to finding the right gift. Personally, I want one of these:From Pedal Cars and Retro Collectibles, an online store owned by Janice and Susan -- (the two moms that run 5 Minutes for Mom), it's one of the coolest things I have found. But I can't get it for her, because honestly? My husband and I would get more use out of it than she would. (Yes, we still use cassette tapes and we even have a large record collection that we are working at getting digitized)There's always one of these:But I have issues with the whole ipod thing. What if she leaves it in the pocket of her jeans and it gets wash
Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin 2008-02-25 15:32:56 Somewhere between the end of our third decade and the beginning of our fourth, it is a cruel cosmic irony that most women will begin to grow chin hair at the precise time that our vision is too blurry to pluck it. Peri-menopause is not for the faint of heart (or vision). And even as I write this, I am sure there is another woman like me somewhere - sitting on top of the sink, wearing bifocals, with face bent forward just mere millimeters from the mirror, straining mightily in a life-or-death struggle with an offending chin hair. I have never worn glasses a day in my life - in fact, my vision has always been better than 20/20, except where my chin hairs are concerned. How is it that even though I check daily for them, there are always two or three that manage to elude my tweezerman? These
No title 2008-02-22 01:10:09 Titus 2:4 - "That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands.." Great news! I found something for the devotion here. (In case you ever find yourself in the same situation). ahem. But I digress...tonight, I went to a Beauti-Control party with my SIL. What an eye-opener it was. My skin is not pretty - after we did the masks and the lotions, she turned out the lights and put that nasty old black light on my skin and I'll be danged if it wasn't COVERED with freckles (hello sun damage). I also had black rings around my eyes, which apparently means I'm dehydrated. She also told us that in about 15 years, those spots will start to make their appearance on our faces and we will look a lot like we do under the black light. That's enough to make me want to tell my husband to
The post with no title 2008-02-22 00:56:36 Okay, I know it's not exactly a topic you talk about openly on the old internet, especially if you don't want to attract the wrong kind of reader, but I need some sage advice about something of a "married nature." Not for me, (that's what they all say, right?) I assure you.We have a young Christian couple in our church who are to be married on February 29th. He is our youth pastor and she is the daughter of one of our missionaries, they are in their early 20's and have both remained "pure" for their wedding day, which is an incredibly awesome thing, if you ask me. During their courtship, they have not even kissed or been alone together - they have always had a chaperone. (Don't even start with how "old-fashioned" this sounds - it has probably been what has helped them to stay "pure"). I ha
Walking on eggshells? 2008-02-21 15:58:22 A six-year-old boy told his father he wanted to marry the little girl across the street. The father, being modern and well-schooled in handling children, hid his smile behind his hand. 'That's a serious step,' he said. 'Have you thought it out completely?' 'Yes,' his young son answered. 'We can spend one week in my room and the next in hers. It's right across the street, so I can run home if I get scared of the dark.' 'How about transportation?' the father asked. 'I have my wagon, and we both have our tricycles,' the little boy answered. The boy had an answer to every question the father raised. Finally, in exasperation, his dad asked, 'What about babies? When you're married, you're liable to have babies, you know.' 'We've thought about that, too,' the little boy replied. 'We're Read more:Walking
Anguished English 2008-02-21 01:12:37 The following is a series of excerpts from a book entitled Anguished English
. The book is a compilation of malapropisms and misspellings that have appeared on student examinations at the secondary school level. Here's a chance for those of us who did not pay attention in school to learn it all once again...1. "Ancient Egypt was inhabited by mummies, and they all wrote in hydraulics. They lived in the dessert and travelled by Camelot. The climate was hot and dry so they had to cultivate by irritation."2. "In the Olympic Games, Greeks ran races, jumped, threw the java, and hurled the bisquits."3. "Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The Ides of March murdered him. Dying, he gasped out the words, 'Tee hee, Brutus'."4. "In midevil times, people were alliterate.
WFMW: Out, Spot! 2008-02-19 23:11:35 Here is something I learned the hard way...never try to remove a stain with a paper product! You are likely to succeed only in creating a lightened bullseye, with the dark spot smack dab in the middle. Like a spotlight...."look here, I'm a spot!" The reason, I read somewhere, is that paper products have been bleached somewhere in the manufacturing process. So rubbing that napkin or paper towel on your garment is probably not a good idea. From Laura at "The Secret Pocket", a tip to remove spots:Instead, use two clean washcloths or towels, a dry one under the spot, and a damp one to work the stain with. Also, rather than using a rubbing or circular motion, use a dabbing motion. Wrap the cloth on your index finger and repeatedly "poke" the stain. For stubborn stains, incidentally, I like the Ca
Seriously Good Southwest Crockpot Breakfast 2008-02-19 22:36:12 Time for the Big Bloggy Breakfast
Roundup over at Home But Not Alone. This recipe is seriously good and super easy. The best thing about it is that you are not "boxed in" with any of the added ingredients - you can add or take away just about anything and it still turns out great. It cooks in the crockpot overnight and if your family is anything like mine, there won't be any leftovers. I love to make this when we have company, because it is so nice to wake up with breakfast already made!Southwest

Did someone say "webisode"? 2008-03-12 23:47:33 The first time I saw that word, I thought Spider-man had tripped out and got caught in his own web...but that's not at all what it stands for. It appears that there is an online series developed specifically for, by and about moms called In the Motherhood that you can watch via youtube shorts. Starring Jenny McCarthy, Leah Remini and Chelsea Handler, they portray the ever-hectic, yet always humorous adventures of Motherhood as told by real moms like us. Moms can submit their stories, vote for their favorites and watch as the winning submissions are turned into new episodes simply by going to the website In the Motherhood.
