Citigroup Posts 57 Percent Drop in 3Q 2007-10-15 09:24:00 Citigroup said Monday its third-quarter profit dropped 57% after the biggest U.S. bank took a hit of more than $3 billion in mortgage-backed security losses, leveraged debt write-downs, and fixed-income trading losses.
The market took it reasonably well, however, with the shares only falling 2% in early morning trading. This is because Citigroup stemmed the market a few weeks ago by warning that its third-quarter profit would fall by about 60%. Shares have fallen more than 6 percent since the start of July, and are down more than 12 percen Read more:Percent

TIME TO BACK OFF YOUR LONGS 2007-10-14 13:09:41 I am looking at convincing evidence that a top has been put in the US stock markets. I will begin to short the Q's and then go overseas and begin shorting China , India and Brazil. The economy may not fall into a recession ...it may get overheated which is why gold is relentlessly going higher. The forces for a long decline are in place but we may just go sideways after a 5-7% correction and all the optimism is taken out. Last week was the easiest week since 1999 to make money on the long side ...this market is getting LONG IN THE TOOTH. TTT

Rethinking Microsoft: Theres great upside potential for the software giant 2007-10-12 16:45:29 John C. Dvorak wrote this article that really got me thinking. The premise of the article is that we need to rethink our attitude toward shares of Microsoft
. They have been beaten up for quite awhile because of the perceived inability to perform in the market. There are 6 main reason that John feels the stock has not seen its true potential.
1. The belief that the company cannot sustain growth.
2. The belief that Linux or Apple can step in and dominate Microsoft, because the newest version of Windows lacks luster and has not been well re Read more:giant

Wall Street Falls As Tech Takes a Hit 2007-10-11 16:41:09 It hasn't even been a full 8 hours since my last post and the market has turned around in a big way. The Dow was up over 100 points earlier in the session and then turned to big losses as investors took profits. What triggered the sell-off? Axel Weber, a European Central Bank official, pointed to rising price risks and JPMorgan Chase & Co. lowered its revenue expectations for Baidu.com.
There was also an elevated level of concern on Street

Trade Deficit Improves Significantly 2007-10-11 09:48:29 The U.S. trade deficit fell to the lowest level in seven months, helped by record-high sales of American products and the declining value of the dollar. The deficit with China declined as imports edged down slightly following a string of high-profile recalls.
The Commerce Department reported Thursday that the deficit declined to $57.6 billion in August, down 2.4% from the July imbalance. The improvement reflected a 0.4% rise in exports, which climbed to a record $138.3 billion. Imports actually dropped by 0.4% to $195.9 billion.

Thoughts on Boeing's Dreamliner 787 Delay 2007-10-10 17:46:50 Yes, Boeing
has been getting great defense and homeland security contracts lately. With it's defense projects accounting for about half its total business, I suppose that's why Boeing is able to maintain financial guidance for 2007-2008 and subsidize the 787 development costs. But guess what, people think Boeing's just a commercial airplane maker, and just a 787 Dreamliner maker at that! Its like it's other businesses doesn't exist! (I say this because it seems Boeing's stock only reacts to Dreamliner headlines, both good and ba Read more:Delay

The GEO Group - Don’t Sell, but Don’t Buy Either 2007-10-10 11:31:49 Barron's identified the prison operator sector's recent weakness as a buying opportunity. I agree that the prison population is more likely growing at the 13% forecast by the Pew Charitable Trusts than the incomplete Census report of a 4% growth. Fed members all backed bold rate cut 2007-10-09 13:22:56 A united Federal Reserve was increasingly confident last month that inflation no longer posed a significant threat, which along with an "extremely weak" housing sector paved the way for its aggressive interest-rate reduction, according to the minutes of its Sept. 18 meeting.
Yet officials were quiet on the timing, or even the direction, of future policy moves, saying "future actions would depend on how economic prospects were affected by evolving market developments and by other factors."
