Bitter Lullabies
2007-10-10 20:54:00
Nina Nastasia- I Write Down Lists, Odd Said the Doe, Our Discussion, and Late Night From: You Follow Me [Fatcat, 2007]This is probably the first time that these two words have ever been uttered in the same sentence- free-jazz folk. But, that's exactly what Nina Nastasia's latest album entitled "You Follow Me" sounds like. I know some of you won't agree with me on this, but I'm not saying it sounds like Milford Graves or Sunny Murray. The drums just sound like they could easily be accompanied by squalling saxophones and trumpets. Steve Albini, the highly revered sound engineer on Nastasia's previous albums and founding member of Shellac, is manning the boards again with his trademark drum sound remaining perfectly intact on this recording. Nastasia is joined on the record by Jim White from the Australian group the Dirty Three whose inventive free-form drumming creates a sound that is entrancing and complex. Nina's haunting and fragile vocals complement her bittersweet tales of lon

Bucket of Blues

Classic Blues from Smithsonian FolkwaysI figured that I would shake things up a little bit by posting this compilation of raw and gritty blues. Smithsonian Folkways, long revered for releasing amazing compilations of classic blues, folk, international and bluegrass, have really pulled out the stops here. Classic Blues is a diverse collection of timeless blues featuring Mississipi Delta, Chicago, St Louis and Southwest styles. Artists on here range from popular virtuosos such as Big Bill Broonzy, Memphis Slim and Son House to lesser known dynamos such as Cat Iron, K.C Douglas and Vera Hall. After listening to this record on repeat for three weeks now, I can't seem to get these tunes out of my head. If you are new to blues music or are just interested in checking out some great toe- tapping tunes from some of the major trendsetters in blues music, you will love this collection. Highlights for me include the lyrically playful country blues number "Mule-Ridin Blues" by Big Bill Broonzy; t

Monomono in Stereo

Monomono- Dawn of AwarenessLately, I have been on a psychedelic afro-beat kick. You will probably be into Monomono's Dawn of Awareness if you dug the Chrissy Zebby Tembo from last week . However, their sound is more reminiscent of Fela Kuti's syncopated afro-beat funk than Tembo's afro-psych fuzz guitar sound."Dawn of Awareness" was released on Capitol Records in 1974 to little critical acclaim. Friday Jumbo, the leader of Monomono was a member of Fela's group before he joined forces with vocalist Joni Hasstrup and bassist Kenneth Okulolo to form Monomono. The opening track entitled "Awareness Is What You Need" really nails the Fela afro-beat sound while still creating it's own sound. "Ipade Aladun" is the longest track on here at just over eight minutes and it really cooks with soulful vocals laid over a bed of funky organs and keyboards. Lots of breaks and weird sound effects for the beat junkies on this track alone. At just under five minutes, "Tire Loma Da Nigbehin" is the e

Worship At the Altar of Number 9

Ric Colbeck Quartet- The Sun Is Coming Up[UK Fontana, 1970]This one was featured on Church Number Nine back in May, but the link was removed a couple months ago. I want to dedicate this post to them, because I most likely wouldn't have been exposed to Ric Colbeck if they hadn't posted it. Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth proclaims this as #5 on his top 10 from the Free Jazz underground list, and I can definitely see why. "Aphrodite" starts with a frenzied drum solo right out the gates that stands up to Rashied Ali's dynamic work on Coltrane's "Interstellar Space". The drums continue this erratic tempo throughout the entire song but are joined by flurries of intense blowing from Mike Osborne on Alto Sax and Ric Colbeck on trumpet. There are some electrifying parts around the ten minute mark of the song where Ric's trumpet and Mike's alto sax combine for a dissonant mind-melting excursion. Towards the end of the track, a bass solo slows down the tempo and then the original theme is

Afro-Psychedelic Sunshine

Chrissy Zebby Tembo and Ngozi Family- My AncestorsI recently heard this blasting in a record store and I had to have it. Catchy, upbeat melodies collide with psychedelic fuzz guitar solos to create a sound that immediately grabs the listener by the ear. People who have a predilection for Nigerian and high-life music as well as lo-fi garage and 60's psych-rock will definitley dig this. Besides having "Oh Yeh Yeh" featured on the Love Peace and Poetry-African Psychedelic Music comp and the praise from a few underground DJ's, the exposure to Chrissy Zebby Tembo's music has been minimal. The album was recently reissued on wax after being out-of-print for a long time, and it looks to be a limited presssing of 430 copies. I have uploaded the entire record for you to sample. If you like the album, please purchase it at your local independent record store or by following this link.Your comments are always appreciated!

Spinning Circles Around Your Mind

William S. Fischer- CirclesI don't know how many of you have actually heard this one, but a DJ/music junkie friend of mine turned me on to it several years ago. There is an incredibly eclectic melange of styles represented here that runs the gamut from ambient electronic moog experiments to funky jazz fusion recalling Tony Williams "Emergency" sessions . William S. Fischer was an arranger for Herbie Mann and Nat Adderly records before Herbie gave William the opportunity to record his own record for his Embryo label. The personnel on this one is top-notch- Billy Cobham- Drums, Ron Carter-Bass, Hugh McCracken and Eric Weissberg on gutiars, William Fischer- moog synthesizer and Bill Robinson- vocals. "Patience Is Virtue" combines a commanding Eugene McDaniels-inspired vocal with an infectious funky rock groove. "Saigon" pummels you into submission with a rapid-fire tempo combined with Axelrod-inspired orchestral flourishes that is guaranteed to get your blood pumping. The two showcases f

Sir Richard Bishop of Sun City Girls I posted something on here in dedication to the Sun City Girl's Charlie Gocher back in February. Here's a link to that post if you're interested in checking it out. I'm not sure if the links are still up for the music, but let me know and I can re-up them. I have been alerted by someone that the link for the Sun City Girls live show from La Sala Rossa is no longer active. Here is a reup of that show:Sun City Girls- La Sala Rossa Disc 1Sun City Girls- La Sala Rossa Disc 2Sir Richard Bishop's solo stuff is worlds away from the avant garde experimentalism of the Sun City Girls. Still, he is the only person I know of that can play an acoustic guitar so loud that you'll be reaching for your earplugs. I have seen him live about four times now, but there is really no way of explaining the beauty and noise created by his gifted hands. He is equal parts John Fahey, Django Reinhardt, Manitas De Platas and Fred Frith, but this only scratches the surface

Future Queens Vol.11
2007-09-21 15:01:00
Recently a lot of my favorite blogs have decided to call it a day. Church Number Nine, Prostrate Before a Periwinkle and Cut-Out have recently announced that they will no longer be updating their blogs for various reasons. Daily pressures such as worryingg about how ethical it is to share out-of-print music, constant hassles from record companies and lack of time and energy are the main reasons that they decided to quit blogging. However, these bloggers should be proud of what they have accomplished. They have not only opened up the eyes of the record industry in regards to reissuing out-of print records, but they have gained a cult status among record collecting enthusiasts around the world. These were all blogs that I visited daily and they never failed to have something new and interesting to share. At this time, I would like to give a shout out to these blogs for setting the bar higher for myself and countless others who strive to introduce people to rare and interesting music that

Eclectic Mix Tape #1
2007-08-16 17:16:00
Well, I'm back from vacation with many ideas for this blog. I've been listening to all kinds of music and traversing the web for the latest and greatest blogs to feature on Eclectic Grooves.I will be updating the web links on the side of this page, as it has come to my attention that many of these blogs are defunct or have infrequent updates. In addition, I have a plethora of new sites that I have been checking out on a daily basis that I will be showcasing on here in a future post.I wanted to inform you that the fight for internet radio is still going on. Many people voiced their concerns over the past month, and let it be known that they will not allow their civil liberties and freedoms to be violated. Because of this, Pandora will have more of a fighting chance for survival in the internet radio business. Unfortunately, the fight isn't over yet, and we need to continue contacting our local representatives and state senators to support the passing of the Net Neutrality Act. I will

The End of Internet Radio
2007-07-12 23:45:00
Hello everybody:I don't know if having the freedom to read the type of news and download whatever type of music you want is important to you, but it is a high priority for me. If Congress approves the Net Neutrality act, all internet blogs, message boards, websites, etc. will be treated equally and will not be discriminated against by the phone companies and internet providers. This affects me directly since I have been maintaining Eclectic Grooves for the past year and depend on blogs, message boards and other independent sites to serve as my primary source of information. Here is an excerpt from the Savetheinternet.com site about Net Neutrality that goes more in depth on the subject. The nation's largest telephone and cable companies — including AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and Time Warner — want to be Internet gatekeepers, deciding which Web sites go fast or slow and which won't load at all. They want to tax content providers to guarantee speedy delivery of their data. They want t

Howlin' On the 4th
2007-07-04 16:17:00
Happy 4th of July to everyone who recognizes the 4th as a holiday!About a week ago, someone requested that I post a very rare Howlin' Wolf album. Ask and ye shall receive. Here is a review I posted during March on Ear Fuzz that hopefully gives you an idea of what it sounds like.Howlin Wolf was persuaded to record This is Howlin' Wolf's New Album for Cadet Concept in 1969. This label also released Muddy Water's Electric Mud which has a similar electric rock-n-roll blues sound designed to pull in bigger audiences for both bluesmen. Wolf's opinion of this record was emblazoned on the cover in bold letters- This Is Howlin Wolf's New Album. he Doesn't Like It. He Didn't Like His Electric Guitar At First Either. The idea of creating this album came to Marshall Chess after he toured with the Rolling Stones and realized that they were making money off of the blues legends who influenced them. He brought in the same band that was used in the Electric Mud sessions: Pete Cosey and Phil Upc

Thanks for the positive comments on the Steve Reid post. I enjoy turning people on to creative and interesting music that they might not have been exposed to yet. That's the whole reason that I keep this blog up and running. I know that I haven't exactly been a prolific poster, but I hope to post more frequently in the future.First, I want to expose your ears to the euphoric sounds of the ethno-spiritual free jazz sextet, the Evolutionary Jass Band. Evolutionary Jass Band's founding members Jef Brown and Michael Henrickson(formerly of the Portland avant garde collective JOMF) started the Evolutionary Jass Band around 2001 with the idea of creating spontaneous music with heart and soul. They were originally named the Steele Street Revolutionary Jass Band, but Jef felt that the band should be more about change and evolving. With a similar open-door membership policy to JOMF, their band members have included many of the talented multi-instrumentalists that have been emerging recently i

Explorations in Rhythmatism

When I picked up the latest issue of Wax Poetics, my head was overloaded with new musical ideas for this blog. For those of you who have never heard of Wax Poetics, it's one of the most artistically creative and entertaining zines focusing on jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop from the past and present. Previous covers of Wax Poetics have featured such heavy hitters as James Brown, Isaac Hayes, The Meters and David Axelrod. The April/May issue of Wax Poetics features an engaging interview with Steve Reid, one of the most trailblazing drummers/percussionsists in the musical pantheon. Reid got his start in music at age seventeen when Martha and the Vandellas came to play at his high school. Their drummer was a no-show, so Reid sat in and eventually became a member of their touring band, even playing on a couple of Martha and the Vandella's hit songs "Dancing In the Street" and "Love Is Like a Heat Wave". After a year of touring and recording with Martha and the Vandellas, Reid earned a gig w

Get It While You Can...

Howard Tate- Get It While You Can, 1995, PolygramI don't have a wealth of time or energy, but I wanted to post some new tunes on here. One of my friends mentioned to me that he would like to see more funk or soul on here. So, I'm pulling this one out of the archives. I had never heard of Howard Tate before his long lost classic S/T album from 1972 was reissued in 2001. Get It While You Can was originally released in 1966, but it was reissued on Polygram in 1995.Howard Tate possesses one of the most incredible falsettos in the soul pantheon and his lyrics cut to the bone with gritty tales of love and loneliness. Prolific and talented artists such as Janis Joplin, B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix have covered his songs to great effect. With a spectacular rhythm section and horn charts to boot, Tate seriously brings the funk on Get It While You Can. I have posted a review from Amazon.com. The greatest soul singer ever to fall below '60s pop radar, Howard Tate remains a tantalizing cipher rem

I wanted to let you know that one of the most amazing bands from the Congolese is coming to Portland. Konono No.1 has been mesmerizing crowds around the world with their unorthodox instrumentation and trance-inducing rhythms. Konono No.1 has often been compared to avant-punksters The Ex from the Netherlands who dedicated a song to Konono No.1 on it's latest album Turn. Beneath the power and distortion of the amplified likembes and distorted basslines lies beautiful African harmonizing that recalls Ladysmith Black Mambazo. I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be than at the Aladdin theater tonight. This show is going to be too good to miss. I have posted two songs from each record to give you an idea of what they sound like in both a live and studio environment. Variety is the Spice of Life
2007-04-14 19:29:00
Johnny Jenkins- Ton Ton Macoute, 1970, Capricorn Johnny Jenkins recorded this legendary funk-inflected swamp blues album in 1970 at the ripe age of 31. Jenkins was a huge influence on the playing of Jimi Hendrix and on Ton Ton Macoute, Jenkins concocts a heady brew of Hendrix-flavored psychedelia mixed with gospel, delta blues and swamp rock. Beck liked the sound of his rendition of the Dr. John classic "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" so much that he sampled the infectious drum beat for his hit song "Loser". On "Sick and Tired" Johnny really funks it up with an infectious mix of wah wah guitar, tight beats and gutsy vocals that really make you believe in the power of soul. Other standouts include the psychedelic gospel soul of "Voodoo and You" and the wonderful organ and slide guitar driven "Leaving Trunk". Check out this underappreciated classic in all it's glory while the getting's good. Get it hereApryl Fool- S/T, 1969, Label UnknownI was really surprised to find out that this experi

Myths of the Deconstruction of Rock
2007-04-11 19:02:00
I have been so busy in the past couple months that I haven't had time to update. I have a billion thoughts rolling around in my head about what to post next, but I want to know what you guys want to see on this blog? Do you have any requests? Your comments are what keeps me going when traffic is slow, so give me a shout. I have some great stuff in store for this blog that will hopefully be just around the corner. To tide you over until the weekend, here is a great introduction to the Drag City band US Maple. US MapleUS Maple are an enigmatic band that began it's aural assault on this unsuspecting world in 1995. They have only recorded five albums during the past decade, but each note on these records is well thought out and meticulously constructed. In fact, even though it seems like they are improvising during their live performances, it couldn't be further from the truth. They practice endlessly to create a live experience which emulates the sound and dynamics of their records as

Sun City Girls and Delta Dan
2007-02-24 19:31:00
It was brought to my attention by the FM Shades blog that Charles Gocher from the Sun City Girls passed away on February 20th at the age of 54. Charles had been battling cancer over the last three years, but apparently he only wanted his immediate family and friends to know about his illness. I was privileged enough to witness his frenetic free-jazz inspired drumming and spoken-word at a Sun City Girls show at Dante's in Portland, OR on 11/13/02. It was a sight to behold , and an experience that I will never forget. I wish I had gone to the band's last show in Portland, but unfortunately I can't turn back the hands of time. In honor of Charles and his recordings with the Sun City Girls, I am posting an album from the Sun City Girls' limited edition Carnival Folklore Resurrection Series called The Handsome Stranger which primarily focuses on the profanity-laced beat poet stylings of Gocher with Alan and Rick Bishop complementing him with a loungey jazz backdrop on piano and guitar.

Nels Cline and Glenn Kotche
2007-02-22 23:17:00
Nels Cline (Nels Cline Singers, Wilco) and Glenn Kotche( Wilco) are playing a show at the Doug Fir Lounge this Saturday for $12. I've seen Nels Cline live before and he is one of the most extraordinary avant garde jazz guitarists playing nowadays. During his performances, he displays a skill and dexterity in playing incendiary guitar solos so fast that it makes the listener's head swim. His diverse recording endeavours include projects with the Nels Cline Singers(instrumental), Wilco, Scott Amendola Group, Vinny Golia, Thurston Moore, Charlie Haden, Willie Nelson and Carla Bozulich. He is well versed in punk, noise, free jazz, country, traditional jazz and just about any other style that he attempts. I am most familiar with the Nels Cline Singers album called Instrumentals which is a barnstormer of an album blending noise, blues, free jazz, ambient and acoustic music. Nels describes the album as “powerjazzrockfreepsychedelicate instrumental music.” For what it's worth, my favorit

MV& EE w/ Charalambides
2007-02-20 17:33:00
I wanted to post a little something on MV & EE w/ The Bummer Road since they are rolling through Portland tonight w/ Charalambides at The Reed College Chapel. I realize its not much notice, but if you want to head out to the show, it's probably around $6-8.The MV stands for Matt Valentine and the EE stands for Erika Elder. The married duo have been releasing limited edition CD-R's and vinyl that have long gone out of print. For those of you who weren't fortunate enough to snag those when they were in print, you can still find them scattered on various blogs and file sharing services such as Soulseek. I will be posting a couple of these later this week, so keep your eyes peeled for that. Since time is of the essence I am only going to say that ever since I discovered the Tower Recordings (MV & EE's band before they started MV & EE w/ The Bummer Road) ) album Folk Scene, I have been mesmerized with it's intoxicating blend of atmospheric folk, indian ragas, experimental sound

The Hiatus Is Over
2007-02-17 13:56:00
Well, first of all, it really is great to be back after being gone for a little over a month. However, I am disappointed that my last post on a mix-CD called Aural Film Noir Excursions received only one comment over the past month. I hope I still have some readers out there in Blogland. If you guys are out there and you appreciate what I do here at Eclectic Grooves, please give me a shout. And now onto our regularly scheduled program: I was fortunate enought to see Deerhoof twice in the last year, and their recent show at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, OR was definitely something you had to see to believe. Greg Saunier played the drums like a speed-addled crackhead who's had one too many cups of coffee. I was in awe as his octopus-like drumming skills captivated the sold-out all ages show. He is essentially a rock drummer, but his fills are as funky as the JB's and his drumming is mostly reminiscent of free-jazz legends such as Milford Graves or Sunny Murray. You have to see him li

Aural Film Noir Excursions
2007-01-08 16:24:00
I apologize for posting so infrequently lately, but I have been in the process of looking for a new job and I am moving in with my girlfriend at the end of January. This will give you a chance to explore the archives of Eclectic Grooves. Please let me know if anything needs reposted, as I will be checking my e-mail every day.I was inspired to create this mix after viewing many film noir movies such as Touch of Evil, The Maltese Falcon and The Third Man. I loved these films and appreciated that the music was almost another character in the dark and seedy streets of crime, corruption, deception and lust. The music in film noir movies is decidely slow and moody with mostly smoky jazz that complements the cool detachment of the characters portrayed in the films. My general idea was to create a mix tape of songs that would fit in a 40's/50's film noir crime drama, but one in which none of the songs were actually from a movie soundtrack(Jim Jarmusch featured the Mulatu Estatke song on the B

Best Records of 2006
2006-12-29 16:46:00
I hope you all had a great holiday this year. Since I haven't really been hearing a lot of new music this year, my list will be a combination of new discoveries along with reissues and new releases from 2006. Here's my "Best of 2006" list just in time for the new year. Have a safe and happy new year, and I'll see you next year!1) Comets on Fire- Avatar- This time around the boys from Santa Cruz tone down the cacophonous swirl of saxophones, psych garage guitars and echo-drenched vocals for a more laid back classic rock sound. Don't get me wrong though, the opening track Dogwood Rust still pummels you with a mind-melting hard rockin' listening experience. Think Jefferson Airplane mixed with MC5.Comets on Fire- Dogwood Rust and Lucifer's Memory2)Fred Lane- From the One That Cut You- I discovered this album on the fantastically diverse blog Palestinian Light Orchestra. The record is a mix of skronking big-band free-jazz with loopy sound effects, goofy absurdist vocals and noisy no-w

On the 8th Day of Christmas...
2006-12-20 15:34:00
Blue Yule This is the second installment of Christmas goodies for your stocking. I hope you enjoyed the Where Will You Be Christmas Day album that was posted yesterday. I decided to give you a double dose of Christmas goodness today. Blue Yule, which was released by Rhino Records in 1991, is an essential compilation of Blues greats such as Lightnin' Hopkins, Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker and Big Jack Johnson belting out their Christmas favorites. Blue Yule is one of my favorite Cd's to spin during the Christmas season. It is the Christmas sound spiked with raw, soulful performances from some of the greatest artists in Blues. If you like a little bit more whiskey in your eggnog, then you'll love Blue Yule. Please go here or to your local record store and pick up a copy of this CD.Christmas Cookin'The second part of this post is dedicated to "The Incredible Jimmy Smith" and his astonishing Hammond B3 organ playing. Jimmy Smith first released Christmas Cookin' on Verve Record

This Time It's Really Christmas
2006-12-19 16:46:00
Where Will You Be Christmas Day? After working at a record store for four years, you can imagine that I was inundated with non-stop Christmas music during the Christmas season. I really began to despise Christmas for becoming such an over-commercialized event, a "Hallmark Holiday" if you will. That was, until my ears came across this fantastic overview of old-timey blues, jazz, bluegrass and cajun recordings called "Where Will You Be Christmas Day?". This recording was released by the good folks over at Dust to Digital, who are also well known for releasing the definitive gospel box set called "Goodbye Babylon". "Where Will You Be Christmas Day" is comprised of rare recordings from 1917-1959 that have been digitally remastered from the original 78's. I have been cracking this one out every Christmas since it was released in 2004, and I hear something new and exciting every time. It includes accapella gospel singing, old-timey bluegrass picking, spicy cajun fiddling and incendiary blue

This Ain't No Easy Listening
2007-10-14 13:01:00
Brotzmann/Hopkins/Ali- SonglinesLet me start off by saying that I am in no way responsible if your eardrums start bleeding from the sheer intensity and volume of this recording. It's not pure cacophony like Machine Gun or Nipples, but it is definitely not cocktail party jazz for the bachelor pad generation. Peter Brotzmann has played with so many free jazz greats that if I was to list them all here it would take up the entire post. "Songlines" was recorded in 1991 as part of the mythical "Total Music Meeting" with Fred Hopkins and Rashied Ali joining Brotzmann for an intensely spiritual meeting of the minds. This meeting was apparently meant to bring three saxophonists, three bassists and threee drummers from both sides of the Atlantic to play together in all sorts of interesting combinations. This record is the end result of one of these fantastically creative collaborations. "Songlines" features virtuoso performances by all three members, but you wouldn't expect anything less from

Punk Jazz from Macabre Land

Dull Schicksal- They Saved Hitler's BrainUnfortunately, I was unable to find much information on this album and that includes the cover art. This image was taken from the movie trailer for the 1966 Sci-Fi film that was adapted for television from the feature film "Madmen of Mandoras" directed by David Bradley. I do know that it was released in 1991 on the Dutch Label ADM, but it's extremely hard to find.Dull Schicksal was a Rotterdam-based band that existed from 1984 to 1999 with permanent members Lukas Simonis (guitar, synth, vocals), Hajo Doorn (drums, keyboards, vocals, also known as Raoul Goudvis), Colin McClure (accordeon, bass, sousaphone, keyboards, vocals, sometimes listed as Colin McClean), and Henk Bakker (flute, clarinet, vocals). I can only describe "They Saved Hitler's Brain" as avant garde prog punk jazz that sounds like nothing I've ever heard before. It has elements of The Ex, Marc Ribot and Dog Faced Hermans with marching band and free-jazz textures added to it's

A Little July in October

Well, I apologize for the lack of new posts this week, but I have been under the weather. If you want to know when this site is updated in the future, please sign up for my feed via Feedburner. Another way to receive this information is by adding Eclectic Grooves to your Technorati favorites. I hope to update more frequently next week with some new tunes that I'm sure you will dig. In the meantime, please feel free to leave any requests in the "General comments" above. As far as I know, this is the only slab of wax that July ever recorded. Epic Records released this record at the height of psych rock's popularity in 1968. Unfortunately, the band received very little fanfare and disbanded a year after their inception. Lead vocalist, Tom Newman, would become renowned as the recording engineer for Mike Oldfield's instrumental concept album Tubular Bells, whi

Well, this file has yet again been deleted, so this is the last time I will re-up it. Get it while you can. Reup: Brotzman/Hopkins/Ali Well, it appears that using Z-Share is not going to work, since they have already deleted the Brotzmann/Hopkins/Ali link from their server. Most of the file sharing services have been unreliable lately, but I am re-upping this link with Mediafire. Please let me know if there are any problems with the download using Mediafire. Now onto more pressing issues:Lately there have been a lot of vistors here who have downloaded shares without leaving a comment. I too have downloaded something from a blog and then didn't leave a comment because I couldn't remember where I had gotten it from. So, I know where you're coming from on that one. However, it is generally just nice to hear that people appreciate what I'm doing here. A simple "thank you" will suffice, and I don't think that this is too much to ask.
