Halo 3 How-to: Networking in Halo 3
2007-10-12 14:56:01
Halo 3 benefits from lots of cool Xbox Live and community features. To make the most of those, you’ll need Xbox Live Gold and a broadband network connection. However, it’s still possible to enjoy a Halo network experience without any online access at all, as you’ll see. The following is a very rough guide to simple networking issues – there are simply too many routers and setups for us to make a truly comprehensive guide, but this should help you with the basics. Q: Do I need Broadband and Live to play Halo 3 multiplayer? A: No, LAN games (games played on a Local Area Network) and System Link games are still possible. For two 360 systems, simply connect them together with any Ethernet cable (360 automatically does the “crossover” process. For more than two players, up to a maximum of 16, a LAN or router(s) will be required. This will give you access to Co-op, (up to four players, a maximum of two per screen) Multiplayer (up to 16 players) and Forge. For more advanced fea

OMG My Stats are Borked!
2007-10-12 14:44:33
Over the past few days, some players (including myself) have noticed that their stats from games of Halo 3 have not been uploading to Bungie.net. The issue involved corrupted data that, in the simplest of terms, wasn’t connecting players to their game data. The data still existed, the games just had to be relinked to the profiles. Because of the way our database works, the most recently uploaded games affect the Player Bar at the top of your page. So, while the reprocessing is underway (it should conclude in the next 24-36 hours), things like your Rank and EXP may appear differently than they appear in game, specifically, they may appear how they were on say, last Friday. The good news is that the in-game display is correct and will be reflected on the website either after you play another game and it uploads, or one all of the processing is complete and you play another game — that’s because of the “most recently updated game history” bit I was talking ab

Waves Audio Plug-ins in Halo 3
2007-10-19 14:15:18
Remember way, way back before Halo 3 came out when we chatted with Marty O’Donnell and Jay Weinland about just a bit of Halo 3’s audio? We released an MP3 of a door opening on Crow’s Nest and Marty gently walked readers through how he incorporated music into Halo 3. One of the key components in implementing audio in Halo 3 comes from Waves Audio Ltd, a software company specializing in audio plug-ins. Bungie Audio Lead Jay Weinland remarked on the partnership with Waves saying, “These plug-ins, specifically the L360 Limited/Maximizer and the Q10 Equalizer allowed us to process our overall mix in real-time without digital clipping (the L360) and create authentic sounding occlusion/obstruction and radio filters (the Q10).” To anyone who isn’t an audiophile that can sound a little bit confusing, here’s Jay’s translation: “The Waves plug-ins process our audio in real time as the game engine generates the audio calls.  This is a major shift as typically to use Waves i

The weapons of Halo 3
2007-10-18 14:06:34
Being an editor at a video game site certainly does have its advantages. We get to travel all over the world to visit studios, collect the free games that are sent our way, and interact with our readers, who are some of the most knowledgeable gamers out there (and there are definitely times when they know more than us). While all of those things are well and good, the best part of our jobs is the ability to check out games before just about anyone else in the world. Not surprisingly, just about every editor that attended last week’s Halo 3 event in San Francisco was excited beyond belief to finally get a chance to play the most anticipated Xbox 360 game of all time (well, except for Brent, that is). After playing the game all weekend, I’m finally beginning to feel comfortable with the controls and the gameplay. Ultimately, the toughest thing to get used to is the new stable of weapons. While many of them appeared in the previous games, it feels as though they’ve been tweaked and

Halo 3 Shotty Snipers greatly reduced
2007-10-17 15:39:52
Bungie has moved quickly to update its playlists for Halo 3’s multiplayer games. Presumably after seeing the amount of vetoes certain gametypes (cough)Shotty Snipers(cough) received. “Halo 3’s Matchmaking Playlists, just like Halo 2’s, are dynamic and ever-changing entities,” says Bungie. “Even now in the perilous Bungie towers, we’re looking at new hoppers, gametypes and modes to test for future iterations and changes of these playlists. Multiplayer Lead Tyson Green and test wunderkind David Gasca sent the following list of changes to us — and these changes are live now.” And the changes are: Big Team Battle matches are now 16-player affairs In the Team Slayer playlist, the appearance of Shotty Snipers has been greatly reduced Now, when players veto Shotty Snipers, the game that results from the veto will not be Shotty Snipers In one-sided VIP matches, the attacking team will now see a waypoint for the VIP they are hunting In Lone

Bungie says new maps are a work in progress
2007-10-17 15:34:08
Bungie has given a tiny update on where’s at with downloadable content for the recently released Halo 3. “Work is progress ing on new maps for future downloadable content, with the design and art teams vigorously engaged in the process,” reads the latest update. “More entertainingly however, the ad-hoc test team of Bungie staff is enjoying these new maps greatly. My favorites are what I have already nicknamed Jodrell Bank and Moonbase Alpha. “I ‘invented’ a game type on Jodrell Bank which is actually just Team Slayer with Swords and Snipers. Thanks to some unique geographical features of that map, it works great. Moonbase Alpha, on the other hand is best suited to objective games, like CTF and Assaualt, but it has some natural deadlocks that make Slayer interesting and Infection terrifying.   “Which reminds me of one more downloadable map. The scariest map of all time. Dark, frightening and surprisingly enormous. One of the scariest

Halo 3’s Master Chief blamed for poor box office sales
2007-10-17 15:29:56
Ticket sales down a whopping 27 percent for first October weekend, film execs blame the Chief . Film executives are blaming Halo 3 for lower than expected October Box Office numbers, which on the weekend of the 5th were down a whopping 27 percent from the same time last year. Many film executives, reports Advertising Age, are convinced that punters stayed indoors to play Master Chief’s latest, which let’s not forget broke all box office records by making $170 million on its first day. It’s now gone on to sell well over $300 million. Ben Stiller’s new offering, The Heartbreak Kid (which cost $60 million to make) was expected to clear $20 million in its opening weekend, instead it made only $14 million. Execs blame the Chief.“The audience on this game is the 18-to-34 demographic, similar to what you’d see in cinemas,” said Mike Hickey, an analyst at Janco Partners, adding that “this could last for several weeks.” In its first week of r

Halo 3 not necessarily a system seller
2007-10-17 15:24:14
Halo 3 software will certainly sell plenty, but it won’t necessarily sell consoles for Microsoft, says a confident Reggie Fils-Aime, who asks: “Tell me what’s new?” Halo 3 has been hyped as one of the biggest game releases of all time, but Reggie remains confident that it won’t effect Nintendo’s position in the console war. “Will they sell a lot of software? Certainly. Will it sell hardware? I think it’s an open question,” Reggie commented, going on to explain: “I think that the Halo 3 consumer already has the hardware, because they’re playing Bioshock and Crackdown and a variety of games that are, in the end, quite similar: first-person shooter experience, multiplayer capable online. Tell me what’s new?” Advertisement: He goes on to say that Nintendo has no need to counter the launch of Halo 3 in any way. “I am fortunate to have a series of (games) that are all going to drive substantial sales for me a
