Nikon D40x SLR Digital Camera Review
2007-10-11 06:01:34
There are about 2 weeks now since I have the Nikon D40x and I am extremely pleased with it. The main reasons are: fast shooting and crystal clear images with natural colors, very low noise and plenty of sharpness. There are 2 more things I like about it: the fact that I can immediately delete a picture if I want without entering the playback mode (The length of time the image remains on the monitor is determined by option.) and the outstanding battery life (I believe I reached around 600 shots before recharging - and recharging time is a little bit less than 2 hours). It’s not heavy (this is important for me) and maintains the design of the previous 6MP Nikon D40, having a good grip and well placed buttons. Becoming familiar with the operation of the D40x will take little time even if the controls are well placed and logical. There are few Vari-Programs shooting options compared to my old Canon, but, who really needs them? The display shows all the informations needed for adjust

2007-10-11 03:43:45
Digital Photography Masterclass by Tom Ang is a book for which you will be encouraged to tackle a number of assignments. Your photos could be selected to illustrate the sections called ‘Critiques’. Your task is easy: read the briefs for the assignments, then take photographs or search your collection for suitable images and post them to the Flickr group Tom Ang’s Digital Photography Masterclass with tags (the assignment number) and commentary (where, when and why you took the picture, camera and lenses, special effects, and so on). Here’s the link where to post. This sounds like a good temptation for me because there’s much to learn from it so I will participate into this one. There is a wide for the number of images you can send: 2-5 shots per category. Here’s a list with the categories: 1. Camera settings - City lights and details 2. Still life - Expose with feeling 3. The 1.5-inch Pocket Album

I told you a little while ago about a digital photo frame for your home. Well, that one looks good on the table, but, the “Pocket Album ” I’m talking about now, it can be carried around. It is a digital keychain photo viewer with a 1.5-inch color LCD screen (contrast is adjustable for choosing your optimal viewing angle) that lets you carry up to 74 pictures within its 8MB internal memory (I which there could be more and I believe it’s possible with today’s technologie). You can have the favorite photos right in your pocket to share and relive your photo moments with friends wherever you go. Photos can be viewed by scrolling manually or through an automatic photo sideshow with adjustable intervals. Pocket Album includes user-friendly Photo Viewer Software that can crop and rotate any photos you wish to transfer from the PC (connection is made with the USB cable), and then automatically resize the photos for optimal storage and display on the digital keychain.

How to Photograph White Object on White Background
2007-10-11 14:32:11
First, let’s see what I used: a white textile (canvas or so) and not a paper. Why? Because I want the result to be realistic and not plane. Also, it’s important that the background surface should not be glossy. Natural light plus a tungsten light (two of them would be even better) and fill flash. Because the flash might overexpose some ares of the photo (usually the central area), I use a diffuser made from a very transparent soft plastic or canvas piece. Usually this kind of thing refers to macro shots, so you may want to shoot in macro mode or manual. Now let’s see the tips: 1. Use a textile background that makes a few soft “natural waves” 2. Use one little colored piece in your white composition as a reference 3. Use lights from all sides to avoid big dark shadows 4. Use fill flash (better with diffuser on it) to naturally brighten up the scene and reveal the details 5. Use custom white balance to ensure real white 6. Only use matrix light metering

Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z3 Digital Camera Review
2007-10-20 12:28:14
The DiMAGE Z3 is the first ultra zoom camera Konica Minolta to use their exclusive Anti-shake image stabilization system which is very much needed on a ultra zoom camera. Two nice things about Minolta Z3 are the fact it uses AA batteries (better rechargeable) and SD compatible digital storage. The design is black-colored made mostly of high-grade plastic. It feels very solid and well-constructed, with a big grip, well placed buttons (important controls are all easy to reach) and there is good distance between the pop-up flash and the lens. The range of the lens is equivalent to 35 - 420 mm, allowing a large pallet of photography types and creativity. You can also add a wide-angle conversion lens as well as filters if you’d like. The image stabilization is not based of shifting an element in the lens to counteract “camera shake”, but the Z3 actually moves the CCD itself, giving you sharper photos at slower shutter speeds. The camera is also equipped with an electronic

Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z5 Digital Camera Review
2007-10-20 11:45:22
The Z series is one of the few ranges of digital cameras that look absolutely nothing like any film camera because of the unique futuristic design. The casing is plastic over a metal chassis, and the build quality is excellent: light and delicatebut in the same time it feels very strong and solid. Aside from a 5MP sensor and a couple of minor specification changes, the DiMAGE Z5 is almost identical to the Z3. The buttons are also extremely well placed, something that you can’t see on some other manufacturers. A 2 inch LCD monitor, a huge 12x optical zoom lens and Konica Minolta’s innovative image stabilization system are good reasons for anyone to buy it. In terms of performance, it starts up in just under 2 seconds, and shot-to-shot time is approximately 2.5 seconds, which is not exceptional but from slow. Continuous shooting record the last 20 pictures at 10 frames per second. The movie mode is decent, you can operate the zoom lens during recording silently, so no motor noi

Edit My Photo Project goes to stage 2
2007-10-18 01:22:54
About 2 weeks ago I entered a project called “Edit My Photo ”. Bian Auer told everyone who wanted to participate, to “photoshop” his “bird on the beach” photo. There were 28 entries, each of them very different and unique. This project is a fine example how digital processing an image can improve a shot, creating something that would never be possible with the camera alone. Some believe that manipulating an image makes people degrade the original concept of “photography” and I can’t say NO to this either. I’m starting to believe that as better as you get with the camera, the less you’ll need to post-proccess the images. My photo and the entire proccessing can be seen and read here. Participating was fun and I’m looking foreward for further projects like this. Now the stage 2 of the project is about voting your favourite interpretation of the image (actualy 3 of them but you can choose 1 or 2 if not 3). I personaly

Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z20 Digital Camera Review
2007-10-17 10:22:36
For the advanced amateur photographers, Konica Minolta has a DiMAGE Z-series, from which the Z20 ultra-zoom camera is the less expensive one, featuring high performance 5 megapixel sensor with an 8x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 36 – 290mm) and a full range of manual exposure, metering and focus options. Besides from the futuristic silverish design, for the mid-range Z20, you can notice the large handgrip, the elongated round body, and the flash mounted over the lens barrel. For a camera with such zoom power, the lack of image stabilization is quite an issue ourdays. The viewfinder is the same resolution as the monitor screen but it uses up a large amount of battery life compared to other viewfinders and can only be used when the LCD is deactivated (by the way, the LCD is quite small: 1.5 inch). All of the buttons and wheels are well placed for an easy use and the camera is also comfortable to hold. Start-up time is very fast at around 1.5 seconds- it’s not a bad time, but Z
