My experience as a campus journalist 2007-10-09 20:03:17
A student from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) interviewed me via email regarding my experience
as a campus journalist. Allow me to share with you my answers to her questions.

13 (Saturday) at the Cubao Elementary School Ramon Magsaysay High School in Quezon City. I will be one of the three speakers and my assigned topic is the role of blogging and web authoring in education.
For the full text of the announcement, please go to the Blogger’s Kapihan website.
Since I’ve been getting several inquiries regarding the writing seminars and workshops I conduct during the semestral break, I would just like to announce that I am scheduled to do the following this month:
Laws and Ethics of the Press (keynote speech) and Online Publishing (seminar) at the Ateneo de Naga University on October 20
As of this writing, these are the only speaking engagements I have for this month. There are at least two companies that have requested my services to improve their internal newsletters but we have yet to finalize the details.
For now, I hope you can make it on Saturday for the second Blogger&rsq
Something to brag about 2007-10-08 02:46:23 Remember my post last October 2 about my ranking in Rice Bowl Journals? In just a matter of six days, there has been a significant improvement. At this point, I am sorry if I am bragging about something which may not be a big deal to you.
The screenshot below is self-explanatory. As a parting shot, all I can say is that my friend Schumey was right all along.
- This was published in Vol. 6, No. 38 (October 3-9, 2007) of Pinoy Weekly (p. 5), the full text of which may also be retrieved from http://www.pinoyweekly.org/pw6-38/op_ed/ed-6_38_3.htm.

Rice Bowl Journals ranks Rising Sun `2nd Most Popular Blog’ in Asia 2007-10-01 20:52:20 I apologize in advance if this sounds like a shameless and self-serving plug, but I need to share with you this little bit of information which obviously is yet another reason I should be smiling more often.
Even if Rising
Sun has been in existence since March 29, 2007, I submitted my blog to Rice Bowl Journals
(RBJ), an Asia
n online journal community, only last September 6.
As of today, RBJ ranks Rising Sun the second most popular blog in Asia in terms of clicks. I think there is reason for me to celebrate, considering that it has only been less than a month since my blog was listed there.
Please find below the screenshot of the webpage upon clicking “Top 300” in RBJ’s navigation bar.
I should be happy, right? Thank you for reading.
Alexa ranking of selected websites 2007-10-01 05:31:52 While waiting for my wife to arrive, I checked the Alexa
traffic rank of my website dannyarao.com, as well as those of the schools I attended and some organizations and friends I deal with. Guess what? My traffic rank is not that bad, though I know that yours may be higher than mine.
On an even more positive note, dannyarao.com is the 17th most popular website in Alexa’s “Journalists” category which contains 430 websites. Yes, there’s reason for me to smile these days. Anyway, please find the traffic data below I got from Alexa.
Right now, I just wonder why dannyarao.com has a slightly higher Philippine traffic rank than arkibongbayan.org, given that the former’s global rank is lower. The same can be said in comparing the Philippine and global traffic ranks of ibon.org and luisteodoro.com. I hope you will leave a comment if you know the answer.

I was among those interviewed in the segment on political censorship aptly titled “X-rating `Rights’” to be anchored by broadcast journalist Maki Pulido.
As you may now by now, Rights is a collection of 30 to 120-second public service advertisements on the country’s human rights situation. These political ads are directed by independent filmmakers Paolo Villaluna, Kiri Dalena, King Catoy, Anna Isabelle Matutina, Pam Miras, JL Burgos, Nino Tagaro, Sigrid Bernardo, Mike Dagnalan, John Torres, Jon Red, RJ Mabilin and Sigfreid Sanchez.
According to the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), Rights was given an “X” rating (not for public exhibition) because “scenes in the film are presented unfairly, one-sided and undermines Read more:Please
Read my blog through your mobile 2007-09-24 21:51:10 Statistics show that Filipinos have more access to mobile phones than the Internet. If you’re a webmaster or blogger, it is absolutely necessary to use the mobile phone as a platform to disseminate content. You can say that this is a delayed move on my part, but I would like to announce that you may now read Rising Sun through your mobile phone. It’s so easy to do: Just open your mobile phone’s browser and go to http://fdm8.com/risingsun.
I am currently using the free service of FeedM8.com to make my blog more accessible to mobile phone users. Of course, signing up with FeedM8.com is just one step to increasing this blog’s reach, and I really need your help to spread the word around.
If you’re a blogger and you want to make your blog accessible to mobile phone users, I think you should give FeedM8.com a try. It’s free anyway, so what harm can it do? Thank you for your attention.

Check out my J 117 students’ websites 2007-10-19 00:42:31 Now that their final grades have been released, I can now state for the record that I personally take pride in the websites of my students in J 117 (Online Journalism) this semester.
I actually presented the screenshot of these websites at the Blogger’s Kapihan last October 13 though I tried to limit my comments on each of them as I have not yet computed their grades at that time. (Feel free to download my slide presentation titled “Teaching and Web Authoring.”)
Kindly visit the websites below if you have time. The online articles that I required them to write are uploaded there. If you’re a techie, you might find interesting their arguments for HTML handcoding which is the topic of their column articles.
By the way, I am not just linking their websites just so I can help increase their traffic rank (pardon this shameless plug but mine has been greatly improving, in case you haven’t noticed). They deserve to be commended for a job well done.

Grades in J 117 and J 200 already released 2007-10-18 05:29:05 If you’re my student in J 117 (Online Journalism) and J 200 (Thesis), you may now get your class cards from the department. (Yes, I haven’t blogged in a while since I was busy computing your final grades.)
By the way, I have speaking engagements on October 19 (Friday) and 20 (Saturday) within and outside Manila so I won’t be in the campus starting tomorrow. I will be back from my out-of-town trip on October 23 (Monday).
Should you need to talk to me before Monday - and that goes also for my other students in J 199 (Research in Journalism) and J 300 (Thesis-MA level) - please call through my mobile phone as I may not have access to the Internet.
Thank you for your attention.
Grades in J 199 already released; other announcements 2007-10-25 05:20:18 If you’re my student in Journalism 199 (Research in Journalism), you may now get your class cards and unclaimed papers from the department.
For students who incurred an INC in the previous two semesters, kindly submit your lacking requirements before the end of October. I will be very busy in the first week of November so I will not have time to compute your final grade should you delay the submission of your lacking requirements. Please also don’t forget to fill out and submit a completion form.
Thank you for your attention.
Matapos ang pagsabog 2007-10-23 22:39:43 N.B. - This was published in Vol. 6, No. 41 (October 24-31, 2007) of Pinoy Weekly (p. 5).

New, unofficial version of `UP Naming Mahal’ 2007-10-30 05:58:52 A former student sent me an mp3 file of a rendition of UP NamingMahal
, the university hymn of the University of the Philippines (UP), by progressive artists Noel Cabangon (formerly of Buklod), Cooky Chua (former lead singer of Color It Read), Chikoy Pura (lead singer of The Jerks), Gary Granada and Bayang Barrios (formerly of Joey Ayala at Ang Bagong Lumad). The new version
, apparently unofficial, has new lyrics, making the hymn even more socially relevant.
For those who don’t know the history of the UP hymn, the melody was composed by Nicanor Abelardo based on a poem in English by Teogenes Veles titled “U.P. Beloved.” The latter was translated into Filipino by Hilario Rubion and Tomas Aguirre.
You can download the mp3 file of the new version of UP Naming Mahal from Mukamo Philippines. If you want to hear the choral version of the original and official UP Naming Mahal performed by the UP Concert Chorus, you may also download the mp3 file from Nhick Ramiro Pacis&rsqu
Follow me on Twitter 2007-11-05 03:17:40 Call me a late bloomer, but it’s only now that I’ve joined the Twitter
mania. Martin Perez’s post about Twitter prompted me to open an account. Just like Martin, I plan to use Twitter to communicate with my students. Of course, I can only hope that they will “follow me” via Twitter.
With the start of classes at UP on November 9 (Friday), students should expect that I will be posting announcements through Twitter. I agree with Martin that this is very convenient for those who are on the go: I can use my mobile phone to post entries on Twitter, and the service is absolutely free for those who want to “follow me.”
Of course, for security reasons, I have to remind myself that I should not give away vital information like where I am at certain times, especially at night. I think that goes also for those who are publicly known for being critical about the powers-that-be.
I sincerely hope that you will be very careful in blogging about personal deta

Our radio program Usapang Media (DWAD 1098 khz, 3:30 to 4:00 p.m.) had a short but productive discussion today (November
12) on the controversial mural commissioned from the Neo-Angono Artists Collective (NAAC) by the National Press Club (NPC). We interviewed via phone patch Richard Gappi, president of NAAC. Much as we tried our very best to get the side of the NPC, its representatives refused to be interviewed.
Since much has been written about the controversy (you can read, for example, NUJP’s press release on the matter), I will not belabor you with all the facts and arguments of both sides.
Suffice it to say that I share the sentiments of journalists and artists alike in denouncing the move of the NPC. It is plain censorship, arrogance and lack of appreciation for artistic work. One may also add ignorance, judging from the statement of an NPC official who claimed that he did not know press freedom icons like Eugenia Duran-Apostol, among others, who wer Read more:Today

What I went through as a blogger 2007-11-09 04:38:36
Last November 6, a student from De La Salle University (DLSU) sent me 15 questions about my life as a blogger and journalist. My hectic schedule prevented me from replying to her immediately. In any case, please find below my answers.
When did you start blogging?
I started blogging in August 2005. My blog then was titled Solar Power. In March 2007, I posted my first entry on this blog titled Rising Sun.
When you first found out about blogging did you accept the technology right away or was there reluctance at first?
At the start, I did not see the need to blog as I’ve been maintaining a personal website since 1999. However, its growing popularity prompted me to use this technology in a manner that complements my main website. At present, the main website dannyarao.com remains and the blog is just a subdomain of it. What’s interesting to note is that my blog has been getting more page views lately than my main website.
What are your reasons for starting a blog?

Please find below excerpts from the introduction which explains the usefulness of this book to media practitioners and researchers:
This guidebook, the final component of CMFR’s media monitor of news media coverage of the 2007 elections…is meant to serve as a companion to the actual training of media coverage researchers by individuals and groups experienced in media monitoring in the Philippine setting.
This manual was prepared by CMFR Deputy Director Luis V. Teodoro, University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication Professor Danilo A. Arao, and PJR Reports Assistant Editor Hector Bryant L. Macale. (PJR Reports is a CMFR publication.)
As one of the co-authors, the CMFR was kind enough to give me some copies of the manual, two of which I already gave to the UP CMC library.

Isang diskurso sa pagpapakamatay 2007-11-13 22:00:41 N.B. - This was published in Vol. 6, No. 43 (November 14-20, 2007) of Pinoy Weekly (p. 5).
Happiness is an unsolicited comment 2007-11-13 04:12:27 I think I owe a former student an apology for jokingly saying a few minutes ago that she’s being corny when she shook my hand and said “This may sound a bit awkward, but I want to say thank you for the last semester.”
Looking back, there’s nothing “corny” or “awkward” about complimenting someone. Of course, I have to admit that the compliment comes as a bit of a surprise given my reputation as a strict teacher.
To the concerned former student: If you’re reading this, I hope you don’t think that I’m trivializing your gesture which I appreciate very much.
It’s also good to know that, once in a while, there are complete strangers to send feedback about the usefulness of the information I post on my website (including this blog).
A Bukidnon-based high school teacher who asked me for some references he could use in his task as a school paper adviser writes:

Each of them will get a copy of a media monitoring guidebook I recently co-authored.
Congratulations
to Hecky Villanueva, Angela
Santillan and Cepheus Quiñones.
Please find below the answers they gave to the hypothetical situation I presented.
Hecky Villanueva’s answer:
Romy and Judith Miranda face a decision that will affect their lives for years to come. The consequences are multidimensional as it will have implications on their professional careers and reputations, source of livelihood, and future actions.Judith Miranda should have first talked things over with her father and made the appropriate disclosures when requesting interviews at Lifeline. Her father then could have prepared for any contingency including the threat of a firing. Proper disclosure of identity and affiliation is also important in a process
Assessing a website’s ranking 2007-11-21 02:31:25
JB of Skirmisher suggests that I should “post data from other (sources) and not (just) Alexa” to show a more accurate ranking of selected website
s and blogs, most especially mine.
I think JB’s concern is understandable as Alexa only generates data from browsers that have its plugins (Toolbar or Sparky), making the data not representative of the global online community.
I also agree with JB that Technorati data are also good indicators of a blog’s popularity. That explains why the “Blog stats” section of my sidebar has both my Technorati rank and authority, even if they’re not impressive at present.
As a rejoinder of sorts to my previous post, I find it necessary to include other relevant site statistics for both my main website and blog so that online users can better assess if I should be congratulated, which was what Maki, Schumey and dYu did yesterday. (Much as I would want to gather the same statistics for selected websites and blogs, I ca
Sana’y lumakas pa ang piso at bumaba ang presyo 2007-11-20 23:19:31 N.B. - This was published in Vol. 6, No. 44 (November 21-27, 2007) of Pinoy Weekly (p. 5).
