The World’s Top 25 Clubs, Oct. 8 2007 Edition 2007-10-07 15:49:00 1. (4) Barcelona. On fire. Scored impressive wins at VfB Stuttgart and against Atletico Madrid, without giving up a goal in the process. 2. (3) Arsenal. Moved to the top the Premier League, while remaining unbeaten in all competitions. The two goals conceded versus Sunderland are a slight blemish, but it’s hard to argue with their current form. 3. (2) Bayern Munich. Didn’t give up a goal in a perfect week, but neither team (Benenses and Nurnberg) quite qualifies as “quality competition”. Not being in the Champions League will undoubtedly hurt this team’s ranking as the season wears on. Too bad, because they look really sharp. 4. (5) Inter Milan. Made quick work of PSV Eindhoven in Champions League play, then beat eighth-placed Napoli in weekend Serie A action. 5. (1) Real Madrid. Draw at Lazio is excusable at this early stage of the season, but not if they’re going to top this list. 6. (10) Manchester United. Two impressive wins over Roma and Wigan, with the Read more:World

Spurs Fans (And Others) Speak: Bench Robbo 2007-10-05 09:53:00 A Soccer Source poll found 87% of respondents in favor of Spurs
relegating England's #1 goalkeeper to the bench. The poll was conducted between Tuesday and Friday of this week. Its immediate inspiration was Robbo's horrific play in Monday night's game versus Aston Villa. A game, which, it should be added, just happened to serve as Spurs official 125th birthday celebration. Robinson's erratic play cost Spurs at least two goals and it was only through a truly inspired effort that the team was able to battle back and squeeze out a 4-4 draw (in all likelihood saving Martin Jol's job in the process). Yet the Villa game, though the immediate catalyst for the poll, was by no means Robbo's only blemish. He has been in extremely poor form for some time (probably even dating back to last season) yet continues to start for club and country alike. How much longer? Jol appears very patient with Robinson, even starting him in this week's all-but-meaningless UEFA Cup game in Cyprus. I wouldn' Read more:Others

Lackluster Red Bulls Fall To Toronto 2007-10-04 22:01:00 It was by all accounts a very weak performance by Arena's men. According to Ives' report, only Dane Richards had a good game--an assessment BigAppleSoccer agree with (they called Richards' performance "superb"). But the Red Bulls' defense certainly wasn't superb. Or even adequate. Chris Leitch helped out the other team again, this time going as far as to score for them himself (in the past he would just leave their strikers unmarked on set pieces. I suppose this is more efficient. When is Bruce going to sit this guy?) But I don't mean to pick on Leitch. I mean I do, but the defense as a whole deserves to be ridiculed. Is it true that Toronto
had gone three months without a victory prior to tonight, as Metrofanatic point out? Pathetic. Even more depressing from a RB perspective, the Canadian club has scored a whopping 22 goals this entire season--including tonight. The last time Toronto scored two goals in a game? Try July 4. This does not bode well for the playoffs--assuming the
Mathis Starting For RB Tonight 2007-10-04 18:01:00 Clint Mathis is in the starting lineup in place of the injured Claudio Reyna, as first reported by Ives. That Ives really is something. Give the man props. Reyna is currently leading the referendum on least important Red Bull player of 2007 but there's still time to vote. I personally am not as much a Reyna hater as many others, but I do prefer Mathis (though Claudio has played well recently. Well that is, judging by his form in the first 20 games of the season. The ones he was fit for). Unfortunately, Chris Leitch is also in the lineup, which all but guarantees Red Bull will be scored upon at some point. Sadly, I will not be able to watch the game as I am deadline at my real job. I'll check back later though. Read more:Tonight
Is Tim Howard The Best American Soccer Player? 2007-10-04 14:23:00 That's On Point thinks so. The blog has a nifty list of the top ten U.S. soccer players with the former Metros' goalkeeper holding the top spot. Naturally, the list is going to attract its share of controversy, as lists tend to do (see my list of top 25 clubs for Exhibit B in this matter) but TOP's reasoning is sound. They argue that Howard
transformed Everton into a top four contender last year and that at 28, he has a good chance of becoming the most decorated American
player of all time. I think Howard will have to get a little more consistent for that to happen; his play for the U.S. this summer was pretty poor at times and, as TOP itself concedes, he's prone to the occasional blunder. Of course a keeper prone to blunders can be about valuable as a U.S. president who misjudges intelligence reports to the point of starting preemptive wars. Or something. Still, Howard's impact at Everton is hard to argue with and he is still young for a keeper. The remaining top ten are (in order Read more:Soccer
What To Expect From Tonight's Red Bull Game @ Toronto? 2007-10-04 06:10:00 Another 2-2 draw? It would be the team's fourth such result in a row. Incidentally, the previous three games (at Chicago and at home versus New England and Salt Lake) featured identical RB starting lineups; this after Bruce Arena had used 24 different starting formations in the team's first 24 games of the season. With the playoffs approaching (and Red Bull
all but assured a playoff berth, as we saw in yesterday's post on the topic) you can expect El Bruce to go for four in a row, in the interest of consistency. Except, he might not. See, Arena was none too pleased with Chris Leitch's blown coverage on Salt Lake's second goal last week, calling the marking "atrocious," as reported by me for AmericanSoccerNews.net. Is now finally the time that Arena calls Hunter Freeman out of his doghouse? Freeman played very well in the Reserves game Saturday, and Arena was there for most of it (I know this because I was too). RB fans have been clamoring for Freeman's return and I definitely thi Read more:Tonight

Day Of Upsets In The Champions League 2007-10-03 16:40:00 Liverpool looked "dismal" in their home defeat to Marseille, reports ESPN's Soccernet. Sounds about right, considering the French side is fourth from the bottom in Ligue Un. The same league I was ragging on yesterday after Lyon lost at home to Rangers. Goes to show it's too early in the season to make blanket statements. Not that that will stop me from doing it again. And again. And...well you get the drill.Chelsea ground out a victory at Valencia, which is impressive given the Blues' recent troubles. Then you had Real Madrid, the #1 team in my top 25, settling for a draw at Lazio. The same Lazio that has one (1) victory in six games in Serie A this season. Okay, so maybe that's not a HUGE upset. Neither is Celtic's impressive win over AC Milan, though there was certainly drama at Celtic Park this evening. And while Werder Bremen losing at home to Olympiakos may not exactly bring to mind Lake Placid, add it all up and it makes for a pretty topsy turvy day in the UCL. Read more:League

Red Bulls' Playoff Scenarios 2007-10-03 11:33:00 MetroFanatic has the lowdown on the 'Bulls chances of reaching the playoffs. 'Fanatic is a brilliant site, by the way, chock full of great stuff. Their design alone puts me (and other blogs) to shame. Actually you can't really refer to the site as a blog since it's far more sophisticated. But enough with the fellatio. The playoff scenarios story is great, but only focuses on the bottom line: the team's chances for qualifying for the playoffs, period. What I'd like to know is, can Red Bull move up to fifth place and actually make it out of the first round? First, let's zero in on 5th-11th place in the playoff standings, courtesy of mlsnet.com. teamgpwltpts FC Dallas271211440 New York271110639 Kansas City271011636 Chicago27810933 Columbus277101031 Colorado27712829 Los Angeles26713627 As you can see, Red Bulls are only one point behind FC Dallas with the same amount of games played. Who Is The Red Bulls' Least Valuable Player? 2007-10-03 08:33:00 The team's official site is conducting a poll to determine its Most Valuable Player this year. Which should not be much of a contest, with Juan Pablo Angel taking the honors in a walk. Anybody who has been remotely close to the team this year (let alone seen any of their games or spoken with any of their players) knows Angel is the man. If you ask me, it's a bit of an insult to even bother with the poll in the first place.A much more interesting question, and one I'd really like to have answered, is who is the team's least valuable player? To that end, I am inviting Red Bulls fans (yes, we do exist) to vote in the poll at top right. To specify, the team's LVP or LMVP is the player who caused the team the most grief (and points) through his pathetic play. Which by definition would be a regular, or at least semi-regular starter. I will allow write-in candidates*, but have also identified a few likely candidates:Claudio Reyna. The team's original designated player has been largely in
DC United Succumb To Chivas 2007-10-02 22:35:00 That's Chivas of Guadelajara. The game in question was the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16. Too bad about the result, but D.C. held their own and lost by the narrowest of margins, with the away goal Chivas notched in the first leg last week proving the difference. It's definitely a good thing for MLS clubs to get tested against international competition like this. The more the better; Bring it on, I say. Hopefully we'll be competing in the Copa Libertadores soon. Either way, it seems clear that the only way MLS ever get any kind of respect on an international level is if they hold their own against the other top clubs in the Americas. Of which Chivas is definitely one. So consider this a step in the right direction. Read more:United
Quick Wrap-Up Of Today's Champion's League Action 2007-10-02 15:55:00 Rangers' 3-nil victory at Lyon means one of two things: One, Rangers are pretty darned good or Two, Lyon is a shadow of the team that appeared to make huge strides these last years. It's early still, but I have a feeling this year's Lyon squad is not going to scare many teams outside the French league. A French league that, it should be added, appears very top-heavy if not downright weak from top to bottom. So far Lyon has yet to score in Champions League
play. While being shut-out at Barcelona is nothing to be ashamed of, losing by the same score at home to Rangers is a little more disconcerting. Which is not meant to slight the Scottish side, who look in fine form. As does the other 2-0 team in the group, Barcelona. Although here too, I think VfB Stuttgart are not the team of last season. They currently sit 1oth in the Bundesliga, with a loss to mighty Hansa Rostock last weekend. Ouch. So Lyon and Stuttgart have already dug themselves a bit of a hole. They can still dig their way Read more:Quick

Should Spurs Bench Paul Robinson? 2007-10-02 10:52:00 That is the question of the day (see poll at top right). In case you missed it, Robinson
had a horrible game at White Hart Lane last night. Football is for the Madman offers video evidence of his horrific display and points out that England's #1 cost Spurs
three points. I find that hard to argue with. Robinson has not been himself this season, but does he deserve to be benched? I turn the question to you. Please vote... Read more:Bench
The World's Top 25 Clubs (updated) 2007-10-01 20:05:00 I see this post has attracted a lot of attention as well as its share of criticism (all of it fair, as far as I can tell. Part of the purpose of this exercise was to see where exactly it would fall short, to gauge if it could be rescued or if it was instead doomed to collapse under its own weight). BBC Sport's 606 forum picked up on it and based on some of those comments, I find it necessary to offer the following clarifications:First of all, this is not meant to rank the 25 best clubs in the history of the sport. The only history I am concerned with is this season's and how the club has performed domestically and internationally in that time span.It is meant to mimick, at least in part, the top 25 rankings of college football (American football) teams that are released every week. There too, different teams from different leagues, each with its own particular qualities and strengths and styles of play, are matched against each other. Many of the teams never play each other (because Read more:World

Today is... 2007-10-01 19:27:00 ...the 125th anniversary of Tottenham Hotspur, making Oct. 1 a very important date in the history of the sport. Especially if you're a Spurs fan, which (full disclosure time) happens to apply to yours truly. That doesn't mean I intentionally chose this date to start the blog. Nor was it inspired by the amazing game played at White Hart Lane earlier today. The truth is I've been thinking about doing this for a long time. You see, soccer (or if you prefer, football) is my life. It is as much part of who I am as my dashing good looks. Maybe even more so, because at some point I will presumably lose my good looks but my infatuation with soccer will remain. This isn't about me though. Nobody wants to read about me. And believe it or not, I don't want to write about me either. I want to write about the world's most popular sport. And that's what I intend to do.So here goes nothing. Read more:Today
Poll Update: Reyna Leads Red Bulls Least Valuable Player Vote By Wide Margin 2007-10-16 09:22:00 Oft-injured midfielder Claudio Reyna is leading the inaugural Soccer-Source poll for New York Red Bulls Least Valuable Player Award by a comfortable margin. At the time of this writing, Reyna had received 40 of 103 votes, corresponding to 38.83%, with 19 days of voting left (subject to extension should RB somehow win a playoff round or two. Yeah, I know, won't happen, but I need to put that in just in case). There is a dead heat for second place, with Chris Leitch and Markus Schopp tied with 17 votes (16.5%) each, followed by Kevin Goldthwaite with 16 votes (15.53%) and Ronald Waterreus with 14 (13.59%). Further down are Santino Quaranta (five votes), Jon Conway (two) and Dane Richards, Hunter Freeman and Seth Stammler (one each). Four votes were cast for the elusive "somebody else" category. Unfortunately, the poll did not allow for write-in candidates.A few notes on the poll: as a subjective, for-entertainment-purposes-only feature, I am leaving it up to each individual voter to def Read more:Update

Diego Elected Bundesliga Player Of The Year 2007-10-16 06:52:00 German Bundesliga
players elected Diego
as their player of the year for 2006-07 by a wide margin. The Brazilian got nearly a third of all votes (31.4%), followed by Stuttgart's Mario Gomez (12.2%), Leverkusen teammates Bernd Schneider and Theofanis Gekas (10.72% and 9.5%, respectively) and Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (a Ralph Nader-esque 3.8%). I wonder what Rafael van der Vaart, Torsten Frings and Mohamed Zidan--to name just three examples--did to their colleagues to get excluded from the list. You're telling me they weren't as good as Neuer last season? Then you have guys like Philipp Lahm, who is actually on FIFA's shortlist for player of the year, a nomination Bundesliga players obviously don't agree with. Whatever, these things are stupid anyway. Still, I do think it's telling that Diego (rightfully) gets this much respect in Germany. What Brazil's national team coach Dunga has against him is a mystery. I can't help but think that Brazil would have done a bit better in Read more:Elected
MLS Hooliganism? We Should Be So Lucky. 2007-10-15 08:23:00 Fox Sports' Nick Webster this morning wrote about how soccer hooliganism "isn't that far from kicking off in this country" (that would be the U.S.). This is not just any form of hooliganism, mind you, but the most sinister form that literally caused death and destruction in the 1980s.Uh, sure Nick. Let's hurry up and alert the authorities to those drunken, violent, unemployed louts that are about to descend on MLS stadia to start brawls and destroy property. Wait a tick, you didn't actually provide any timing for your prediction. Are we talking next week's MLS playoffs? Next season? Next decade? With a threat this serious, you may have wanted to investigate that. All joking aside, I would love to see that level of interest in MLS. Not the type that brings to mind Brussels circa May 1985, but a passionate fan base that sings, chants, waves flags...maybe even lights flares on occasion. Yes, I view these two scenarios as mutually exclusive and I'll explain why: First of all, the fata
The World’s Top 25 Clubs, Oct. 15 2007 Edition 2007-10-14 17:44:00 With European clubs on hiatus this week, I considered skipping this edition of the Top 25 altogether. Then I realized that would kind of defeat the purpose of the exercise, which is to have something comparable to the weekly U.S. college football rankings. As you know if you’re in the U.S. and follow college football (that’s American football), the rankings are released every week regardless of whether a few teams are idle. For us, it just so happens that “a few teams” correspond to every one of last week’s top 16 (to see those rankings go here). But who’s to say national team play couldn’t affect these listings? After all, it's many of the same players and their performance can cast their club’s record in a different light. Especially if they got injured and are going to miss time with their club. Besides, Latin American and Mexican teams were active and could (and in one case did) move up. Read on.1. (1) Barcelona. Idle.2. (2) Arsenal. Idle.3. (3) Bayern Munich. Idle Read more:World

Soccer Source Commenter Contests: Win RB Playoff Tix 2007-10-14 15:43:00 In an effort to draw more comments to this site, I am starting two contests that reward the top commentator. Anybody who comments on this site will be eligible (with certain exceptions) to win a pair of New York Red Bulls playoff tickets (for Saturday night, Oct. 27 versus the New England Revolution). The start of the contests begin as this post is published and will end Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 1pm (leaving enough time for me to mail you the tickets) at which point I will make a post with the winners. Anybody not related to me is eligible. More details below. One contest will work very much like a raffle and seeks to reward frequent commenters. Anybody who comments is assigned an ID and placed in a digital hat. The more you comment, the better the odds of winning. The other contest will be more subjective and will reward the individual with what I (and maybe 1-2 people whose opinions I respect on this matter) to be the most consistently constructive comments. Euro Qualifiers: Resurgent Romania, Gritty Greece 2007-10-13 18:08:00 A resurgent Romanian national team scored arguably its biggest victory in a decade by beating Holland on a 71st minute tap-in by Steaua Bucharest defender Dorin Goian. With the victory, Romania is all but assured a spot in Austria and Switzerland. Victor Piturca's side are three points clear of Holland and five points clear of third-placed Bulgaria with only three games remaining, but more importantly the Carpathians have an easy schedule the rest of the way: at Luxembourg Wednesday, at Bulgaria Nov. 17, before concluding with Albania at home Nov. 21.Another big winner from Saturday night's action was Greece
. The defending champions edged Bosnia 3-2 and are now four points clear of archrival Turkey ahead of their Wednesday night meeting at Istanbul. The Turks now have their backs to the wall, after only managing a draw against Moldova. Croatia, England, Poland and Scotland all held serve in crucial home games to strengthen their positions. Poll Finds Only 6% Favor Starting Robbo In England Goal 2007-10-13 17:00:00 A Soccer Source poll conducted in the days leading up to today's Estonia game found only 6% of respondents in favor of starting Paul Robinson in goal for the English national team. Aston Villa's Scott Carson (left) was the poll's favored replacement, tallying 40% of respondents' votes, followed by West Ham's Robert Green (26%), England
's actual #2 David James (20%) and the elusive "somebody else" (6%). Zero percent (0%, as in nobody) wanted Wigan's Chris Kirkland.Did Steve McClaren listen? Nooooo. Robbo started for England today and was a bit shaky on at least one save, according to the BBC's report of the game. (I did not actually watch the game myself, because it wasn't broadcast in New York, though three other Euro qualifiers were, as I previously noted). And that was Estonia. Saturday Night Fever: RB Home Playoff Game Set For Oct. 27 2007-10-12 14:23:00 The Red Bulls' first--and probably last--home playoff game of 2007 will take place at 7:30pm on Saturday
, Oct. 27. Yes, the RB has qualified for the playoffs, though by no feat of their own (see related post on the matter). The other option was for the game to be held on a Thursday night, which would have made it difficult for me to attend due to commitments at my real job, so I'm pleased.Tickets for the game on sale now and can be purchased on the Red Bulls' Web site. I should note that I will be giving away four of them (along with other RB gear) through this blog, as part of a contest to be determined. I'll have more on that later this weekend.Hopefully the weather will hold and a good crowd will show up. In eight Saturday night home games this year, the team has averaged 20,537 fans--a respectable number that is inflated by the 66,237 who made it out for a certain Aug. 18 game against the L.A. Let's Applaud UEFA For Punishing Theatrics 2007-10-11 14:58:00 By now you've probably heard that UEFA has punished AC Milan goalkeeper Dida for his pathetic acting display in last week's Champions League game at Celtic Park. Soccer's European governing body suspended the Brazilian goalkeeper for two games, which sounds about appropriate to me. Repulsive acting displays have plagued the game for too long and the powers-that-be have wasted too much time without taking action against it. I mean, seriously: Besides the occasional yellow card, can you think of any punishment being handed down for acting? Ever? I know FIFA did a lot of talking ahead of last year's World Cup, but that's exactly what it was: talk. Talk is cheap. It doesn't work, least of all with cheaters, which is what you call players who intentionally try to deceive officials.I don't care who is responsible for starting this plague of theatrics that has gone on for a generation (or more--certainly as long as I can remember and I've been following the sport since the early 1980s
FIFA World Player Of The Year: Handicapping The Field 2007-10-10 17:48:00 FIFA came out with its shortlist of 30 players to compete for 2007 Player of The Year honors. While I don't personally care much for these things, I thought it might be interesting to handicap the pool of players by what I consider to be their chances of winning. I'm not going to do each one--too much work and not very interesting either--but instead figured it would be sufficient to divide the shortlist into three groups: those with a good chance of winning, those with an outside shot and players with (in my opinion) no chance in hell. So here goes:Good chance:Kaká, Nesta (by virtue of AC Milan winning the Champions League), Cannavaro (Real won the Spanish league, plus FIFA likes consistency and he won last year), Buffon (didn't he just win something? And he is dominant), Drogba (Chelsea won FA and League cups, he is in his prime and led the EPL in scoring in 06-07. Also the African Footballer of the Year)Outside shot:Gattuso, Pirlo (see Kaká, Nesta), Messi (intriguing, I'll adm Read more:World

Going To The Red Bulls' Final Regular Season Home Game Saturday? Prepare For Lots Of Goals 2007-10-10 11:47:00 With Juan Pablo Angel (17 goals on the season) and Eddie Johnson (15 goals), the league’s second- and third-highest goal scorers will be on the pitch at the same time. Neither team’s defense looks very capable either: The Red Bulls have given up 11 goals in the last five games and the Wizards’ last clean sheet was July 14. So yeah, the game stands to be a high-scoring affair. With a win, the 'Bulls clinch third place in the Eastern conference and a likely match-up with New England in the first round of the playoffs. Not that anybody (other than New England) would want that. The New York franchise's last victory against the Revs was the home leg of the 2005 playoffs, nearly two years ago. Bradley Goes With Youth In Latest Call-Up 2007-10-09 16:47:00 The 21-man roster for the U.S. men's national team's game at Switzerland this Saturday features a whopping seven uncapped players and only eight from this summer's Gold Cup-winning side. Head coach Bob Bradley
apparently opted to let his MLS players concentrate on the playoffs. Only three MLS guys made the roster--Maurice Edu, Robbie Findley and Chris Seitz--and all play for teams that aren't going to play in the post-season. The "Europeans" on the other hand, are in full force, but for some reason Bradley is going with Marcus Hahnemann over Tim Howard. Not sure what that's about; it's not like Howard is injured anymore (is he?). Maybe Bradley just wants to give Hahnemann a look. The seven uncapped players are goalkeeper Tally Hall (plays for Denmark's Esbjerg--no I haven't heard of them either), defender Steve Purdy (1860 Munich), midfielder Danny Szetela (Racing Santander) and forward Preston Zimmermann (Hamburg SV), along with the aforementioned Edu, Findley and Seitz. With t
Who Should England Start In Goal? (Updated) 2007-10-09 07:58:00 Paul Robinson's poor form is a subject Spurs fans and others are all too familiar with. Last week a Soccer-Source poll found 87% of respondents in favor of Martin Jol benching Robbo--advice the burly Dutchman unfortunately declined to heed. The result: another (at best) shaky performance that probably cost Spurs a historic victory at Anfield. While the North London side have the rest of the season to recover these squandered points, England
have no such luxury. As discussed earlier, they currently sit second in Group E qualifying, three points behind Croatia, with three games remaining. The upcoming games against Estonia and Russia are crucial, with the latter match in Moscow sure to prove a difficult challenge on a number of levels (how much experience do these guys have playing on artificial turf?) Surely, McClaren's job is on the line if England fail to qualify. Not the time, one would think, to go with a shaky backstop.
